Strong Day 1 For Shaq Barrett; Competition Brewing For Edge Rush

July 26th, 2023

The pads aren’t on and it’s only underwear football, but Todd Bowles likes what he saw in Day 1 of training camp from Bucs sacks king Shaq Barrett.

That’s great news as Shaq makes more strides from Achilles surgery nine months ago. Joe can attest that Shaq looked sharp.

Bowles also reiterated that fellow edge rusher Joe Tryon-Shoyinka needs to finish plays better, as in not let quarterbacks get away from him.

Joe asked Bowles if Anthony Nelson is competing with Tryon-Shoyinka, and Bowles’ tone sure felt like he wanted to say, ‘Damn right he is.’

“Competition with all of them (pauses and chuckles), you know, we compete. Nothing’s given to you out here. You better earn your spot,” Bowles said.

Joe appreciates Bowles’ response, but the reality is that some starters are not competing because of how much they’ve established themselves. If Shaq stays on track to be ready Week 1, it’ll be interesting to see how Bowles handles who plays outside linebacker opposite Shaq.

It’s possible Tryon-Shoyinka could become a situational pass rusher. And there’s nothing wrong with that if he can get to the quarterback.

so far he seems like a solid situational backup. He’s definitely flashed. Sometimes these guys take time to develop. It’s been a pleasure watching Anthony Nelson blossom into a good player. He shows up when it counts and the other teams still aren’t keyed in on him.

  7. Buccos Says:

Shaq Barrett is my favorite player. Also Lavonte David. With those 2 studs playing full speed we will be hard to score upon, that is for sure. We must have a pass rush

  8. unbelievable Says:

That’s a big IF… He’s got the speed, but doesn’t ever seem to be able to finish.

    (talking about JTS)

    Great to hear about Shaq!

  9. Fred McNeil Says:

  10. Pewter Power Says:

Can’t be a situational pass rusher if the coach and gm is saying you need to step up and finish. He and Logan hall have a lot to prove, can’t wait to see them under the lights

  11. Wild Bill Says:

If Shaq is back at 100% when the season begins that would be huge!
