NFL.com: There’s No Bucs QB Battle

July 23rd, 2023

Kyle Trask.

Expecting or believing Kyle Trask is the Bucs’ starting quarterback on opening day is a stretch.

Joe didn’t type this. An NFL.com analyst did.

Eric Edholm is looking at NFL quarterback battles that move the needle. He’s not feeling it in Tampa.

Edholm guesses Mayfield is the starter, but seems to figure Mayfield is the lesser of two evils and suggests Bucs management is fraudulent and “drab” in trying to con people into believing in Trask.

Among battles not involving rookies, it’s even more drab. Should we be drumming up Sam Howell versus Jacoby Brissett as a heavyweight fight in Washington? Is Baker Mayfield versus Kyle Trask a gladiator showdown in Tampa? Perhaps Mayfield is due for a Geno Smith-like revival, or Howell or Trask can revive their college glory, but those feel like stretches.

Maybe Trask flips the switch when the pads come on next week. The first few training camp practices this week — this week! — are expected to be underwear football practices.

If you want to know who is leading this (faux?) battle early between Mayfield and Trask, do the math on their salaries.

Mayfield will earn at least $4 million. Trask is expected to rake in $1.16 million.

I think the job is Bakers to lose. If he gets injured or is reckless with the ball, it will be the Trask show. I’m okay with this.

  2. TampaBayBucsFanSince1976 Says:

If you believe there is no QB battle , you are a FREAKING IDIOT!! Bowles job is on the line and possibly Licht as well. Both have a vested interest in making sure the player that gives the Bucs the best chance to win is the QB on Day 1 , and anybody that says anything is just a FREAKING IDIOT.

  3. BillyBucco Says:

    Wow exuberant much?
All things equal and Mayfields your guy.
Now Trask can WIN it, but people aren’t betting there will be enough to warrant passing Mayfield.
    Let’s see what happens

  4. Beej Says:

Well, at least it’s a better picture of the kid

  5. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Who in the heck is Eric Edholm? Sounds like some SNL character.

  6. Since76 Says:

I’m of the opinion That the job is Mayfield’s as promised when he signed his name. The BUCS are very quiet about the competition. However they gleam when talking about Mayfield. I hope what they see translates on the field. Just hopefully not the same translation of his career so far. Because it will be an ugly year……

  7. BillyBucco Says:

I think the best attitude for a true Bucs fan is to start watching highlights of Baker and do your best to HOPE Canales can work some magic to get Baker in his and the teams best plays.
If Trask surprises, thats a BONUS.

  8. J Says:

I think there will be a QB competition but, I see Mayfield winning it unless Trask shows out. Licht isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, that’s just silly. Bowles is debatable but I think it’s extremely unlikely because of this “rebuild” year.

  9. HC Grover Says:

There never was a battle. Bowles is and has been all in on Mayfield. The rest is just hype.

  10. HC Grover Says:

LOL Trask rakes 1.5 milliomn to stand around and watch Bowles make a fool of himself. Not a bad gig for a kid.

  11. stpetebucfan Says:

    TBfansince76

Wow take a chill pill before screaming “FREAKING IDIOT”. You’re actually incredibly misguided.

“making sure the player that gives the Bucs the best chance to win is the QB on Day 1”

Joe and the thoughtful unbiased posters here have said that from day one!!!

There are however a lot of people who have OPINIONS on which QB that will be. I personally think Mayfield is probably better but that is based on his super season in Cleveland and the lack of seeing any NFL performance from Trask.

That’s simply an OPINION. Trask was not considered the best QB at his high school yet he persevered! He was done the depth charts at UF but again he perservered. I do not write him off!!! He may yet pesevere and AGAIN S.F. had not just 2 but 3 QB’s on their roster capable of winning. That might be the case for the Bucs as well.

I hope we can all agree that the player who wins it on the grass, not in opinion polls, not because of who has the larger salary, but because whomever wins out DESERVES IT!!!

  12. Infomeplease Says:

Imo, This is BM’s qb job to lose or not!! If he plays decent during the next 5 weeks, he is the starter, period!!! Chris, if you want to call that a qb competition… then yes there is a competition!! Imo, the competition has been completed a long time ago. The only thing missing is the official announcement. Period.

  13. View from 132 Says:

Mayfield is clearly expected to win the job. But the Rays were also clearly expected to win the AL East a couple weeks ago. So if Mayfield has a bad month, Trask may get his shot. What’s so hard to understand about this?

  14. Defense Rules Says:

Where do you dig these guys up Joe? I can’t ever remember seeing Eric Edholm’s name mentioned a an NFL.com analyst before.

And in what world does your “If you want to know who is leading this (faux?) battle early between Mayfield and Trask, do the math on their salaries” statement even make sense? How does knowing their salaries even remotely relate to us finding out (in your words) “who is LEADING this (faux?) battle early between Mayfield and Trask”?

Is Jason Licht the ‘leader’ of this supposed fake battle since he’s promoting it as a competition? How about Todd Bowles; he’s promoting it as a competition also. Or Dave Canales? Is he just going along with the party line to salvage his job?

WHY the conspiracy theories? Why not just take them at their word and see what pops out the other end of preseason?

  15. TampaBayBucsFanSince1976 Says:

Thank you for injecting some logic and reason DR

  16. Salary Cap Hell Says:

If Mayfield falters Trask comes in either way it’s a win for us we get the first and second pick and next year’s draft….
And that’s worst case scenario best case is we may even find a quarterback!

  17. Pewter Power Says:

Yea there’s nothing Trask can say, he’s done absolutely nothing sons he was drafted. He’s probably hearing all this but can’t do anything about it until preseason. It doesn’t matter what you do in training camp if he doesn’t perform on game days

  18. Mike Johnson Says:

There probably is no QB battle..At least not with our Bucs. But Trask will get his shot sometime during the season. Either via Baker injury or poor performance. ..100%. The question is..Will he be ready? I’m just not confident in either one at all.

  19. NCBucfan Says:

Let the best man win. If Trask can’t beat out Mayfield, it’s time to draft another guy behind center.

  20. shankasorous Says:

“Eric Edholm was born and raised in Boston, educated at the University of Missouri and currently lives in Chicago with his wife and two kids.”

Sounds like a reliable source for Tampa Bay news all right.

“Perhaps Mayfield is due for a Geno Smith-like revival, or Howell or Trask can revive their college glory, but those FEEL like stretches.”

So he has no facts upon which to base his conjecture. Yup, a Chicago guy.

LOL Trask rakes 1.5 milliomn to stand around and watch Bowles make a fool of himself. Not a bad gig for a kid.
    ^^^^^^^
You calling Bowles a fool…Pot, meet kettle. On what planet is “million” spelled that way?

  22. Rod Munch Says:

Of course the job is Mayfield’s to lose, and I really hope he loses it, since going 6-12 or 6-11 in an incredibly boring offense is just about as bad as it gets in the NFL. I’d much rather go all-in with Trask and if he stinks, so be it, at least the Bucs will be bad enough to get the 1st overall pick. But if he doesn’t stink, then you actually got hope.

As for Mayfield, the worst QB in football over the last 2 years, we already know what we’re going to see – a guy who makes stupid mistakes, without the big plays needed to even them out. If you watch his tape over the last 2 years, you see a QB who constantly checks down — then will just throw a stupid ball up for grabs. It’s like all the bad traits of Winston, without any of the positive traits.

That doesn’t mean Baker will stink on every play, he’ll go spans looking like a generic low tier starter, which is what I think the Bucs are hoping for. But then he’ll just sprinkle in enough dumb plays to undermine whatever good took place. For those that don’t know, Mayfield does have a big arm, that’s why he went 1st overall, but he doesn’t seem to really use it much – his playstyle really reminds me of a more mistake prone Mike Glennon.

But we shall see. Hopefully Licht knows more than I do and has a master plan at work. Mayfields one good season in Cleveland came when he had the NFL’s best running game, one of the very best offensive lines, and had a dominant defense. Maybe Licht somehow thinks the Bucs can pull of something like that – or maybe Bowles thinks he can do that and Licht is giving him what he wants so when he’s fired at the end of the season, he can’t complain about having to coach someone else’s team.

  23. Craig Says:

There is at least a semblance of a competition. The new OC will be enticed to see what Trask can do.

The job is Baker’s to lose and he might do that in training camp, but will show his true colors at some point.

I hope he has big enough you know whats to sit Baker when he does show his true colors as a loser.

  24. Jack Clark Says:

In other words, nobody thinks Trask will be the Bucs week 1 starting QB. Baker Mayfield is better fit for Todd Bowels boring as offense because he played for the Cleveland Browns

  25. HC Grover Says:

    Joe in Mich…Triggered again….ROFL

  26. Glass Half Full Guy Says:

I see this as a “battle” in the same way people saw Mike Tyson v Michael Spinks as a battle. Sure, Spinks had a “puncher’s chance” but it was kind of pre-determind and Spinks was gone in 91 seconds of the 1st round. Trask needs to pull a Buster Douglas and shock the world in camp and pre-season to get the QB1 job. Mayfield’s experience gives him a huge advantage going into camp. Just my opinion obviously.

However, I also feel that Bowles and Co. see it kind of that way too. Yeah, Bowles’ job is on the line so he needs to make the right choice but either way it goes you can be sure that he (Bowles), Canales, Licht and the Glazers will all be privy to seeing them both in camp and on film and there will be some sort of consensus, if for no other reason than for Bowles to cover his arse if things don’t work out.

So many things can happen (injuries, QB1 not getting it done, etc) that we could very well see both. And if Trask isn’t great or living up to his “draft status” (stupid yardstick imo) it doesn’t mean he’s a bust. Not many great QBs are great in their first or second season as a starter, regardless of how many seasons as a backup or who they learned from while being a backup. Trask has a “puncher’s chance” to win the job. Will he be Spinks or Douglas? It’s up to him.

I’m just pumped for camp to begin!

  27. MadMax Says:

Who? im going to work….no time to read, sorry…Drake Maye

    Drake Maye

  28. BucsBeBack (Artist formally known as: BringBucsBack) Says:

If so, then that is another wasted 2nd round pick by Licht.

  29. TOMMY MORDUE Says:

THIS BUCCANEERS O-26 SURVIVER BELIEVE’S THERE IS TRULY A COMPETITION GOING ON BUT UNLESS TRASK TRULY OUTSHINES MAYFIELD IN TRAINING CAMP & PRE-SEASON GAMES, BAKER WILL ULTIMATELY BECOME THE STARTER..EITHER WAY, IT’S A WIN,WIN FOR THE BUC’S AS THEY WILL ULTIMATELY HAVE 2 QUARTERBACK’S EHO IS GOOD ENOUGH TO START FOR MANY TEAMS..BUT,HOPEFULLY THEY BOTH STAY HERE JUST TO BRING THE BEST OUT OF EACH OTHER ( WHICH IS BETTER THAN HALF THE QUARTERBACK’S IN THE LEAGUE ) WHEN THEM PLAY THEIR BEST BALL !

  30. TOMMY MORDUE Says:

HALF THE STARTERS I MEAN !

  31. Hunter's Crack Pipe Says:

    Test

  32. Greg Says:

Mayfield has led the NFL in turnovers the last 3 years!!!

If they dont believe Trask is the guy fine. Then why didn’t we get a REAL QB? We could have spent our money in other areas so we could bring in a better QB. Mayfield sucks. He has never been wanted back by any team including the one that drafted him with an early draft pick. I think we could have gotten a better QB in free agency or via trade. If our drafted QB is not our guy then this season will be a waste. The rest of our team and crappy division will keep us from getting an early draft pick next year. Wasting talent!

  33. Hodad Says:

Next years draft there’s good QBs through three rounds. Bucs were wise to choose this path. Baker could still have a revival, or Trask might still pan out. We’ll soon find out.

  34. WyomingJoe Says:

Don’t get sidetracked by Baker’s record and stats over the last two seasons. Forget about 2021 season because he was injured in the second game and then absolutely torn apart in game 6. The guy was physically unable to make all the throws. Yet the Brown’s organization played him anyway… because they’re, well, the Browns! Before that injury he was playing really well. Everything went to crap after that for Baker. I’m not apologizing for him, but I saw all the games unlike many of the Buc’s fans on this site. He’s only 28. Stay strong. Go Bucs.

  35. Beej Says:

Trask’s development has been stumped for his two years in the league, should get a fair idea of him by the end of preseason, while Mayfield knows this is likely his last chance to be a starter. Next month and change will be interesting

  36. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    TampaBayBucsFanSince1976 Says
“If you believe there is no QB battle , you are a FREAKING IDIOT!!”

No offense, but you are wrong.

Bowles is going the safe route…an experienced veteran. Baker Mayfield would have had to take many steps backward to not be named starter. Trask was never in this fight.

You think Bowles was going to put his career on the line for a guy with no live game experience? Seriously?

From the start (regardless of what the team claims):

Mayfield is the starter until he plays his way out of starting, or until he gets injured.

So essentially, they’ve been lying to us…but that’s okay, because behind an inexperienced offensive line, I would rather it be Mayfield. Let Trask sit back and wait for his chance…

…then see what Trask can actually do.

He may be great. He may not be any good at all. But he can’t be worse than Baker by that point…maybe just as bad, but not worse.

  37. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Also, don’t expect Trask to get much experience with the starters during Training Camp and Preseason. They’ll want Mayfield to ‘gel’ with his offense, so will get him as much experience with them as possible.

Of course, if he gets injured during the preseason…

  38. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Caleb or Maye? Which will be better and have the longest career?

  39. Oneilbuc Says:

I’m so tired of hearing next draft class the quarterback class will be good!! Again this team has shown that it doesn’t matter how good a quarterback draft class is they have failed every quarterback they have ever drafted . So again what makes you guys believe they will develop Caleb Williams or Drake May??

  40. Defense Rules Says:

On relooking at Mayfield’s career, I see a QB who’s rather inconsistent to the extent that he can have some very good games but some very bad games (I used to think of Jameis that same way). Overall though he’s got the POTENTIAL to clean up some of his bad tendencies & become a pretty good QB it looks like.

    o 2018 (7-7): 310-for-486 (63.8%) – 27 TDs – 14 INTs – 7 Fumbles (3 FL) – 25 sacks
    o 2019 (6-10): 317-for-534 (59.4%) – 22 TDs – 21 INTs – 6 Fumbles (2 FL) – 40 sacks
    o 2020 (11-5): 305-for-486 (62.8%) – 26 TDs – 8 INTs – 8 Fumbles (4 FL) – 26 sacks
    o 2021 (6-8): 253-for-418 (60.5%) – 17 TDs – 13 INTs – 6 Fumbles (3 FL) – 43 sacks
    o 2022 (3-9): 201-for-335 (60.0%) – 10 TDs – 8 INTs – 9 Fumbles (2 FL) – 36 sacks

IF past performance dictates future performance (which isn’t always the case obviously), here’s what we might expect from Baker this season:

    o 14-15 games started
    o 6-7 wins … 7-8 losses
    o 60% – 64% completion percentage
    o 23-25 TDs
    o 14-15 INTs
o 8-9 Fumbles with 3-4 of those lost

However, it’s important to note that Cleveland’s defense during his time there wasn’t as ‘productive’ as ours has been these past few years with Todd Bowles as our DC. Browns defense ranked #21 in 2018, #20 in 2019, #21 in 2020, and #13 in 2021. Panthers defense ranked #19 last year, and the Rams ranked #21. A quality defense can make a big difference.

  41. The Beer Whisperer Says:

Nope. There’s no QB battle. Bucs are stuck with Baker.

I predict: We see Trask, by week 6 or 7, for obvious reasons. If not sooner.

  42. The Beer Whisperer Says:

I have complete faith in Baker. That he’ll mostly, stink up the place.

  43. Mark Says:

Don’t worry. Brady is coming back.

  44. Fred McNeil Says:

All things being equal, Mayfield will probably get the starting gig on day one just on experience. Trask would have to be clearly better. Who knows, maybe that actually happens. Even if Baker gets the opening nod Trask will get an opportunity at some point due to Baker’s fragility and tendency to jitterbug around.
Also, if the Baker rakers are right and Mayfield stinks it up the BUCS will almost surely put Kyle in if only to save Mayfield’s bonus money for next year’s cap. Barring a miracle Kyle will play at least one of two games.

  45. The Beer Whisperer Says:

A short QB that is wildly inaccurate. I could apply for that job.

  46. Rod Munch Says:

Defense Rules – for some reason, in my head, I remember the 2020 Browns defense as actually being quite good, but based on your post I went back and looked at the stats again, and you’re right. I was wondering if they went on a strech, perhaps, where they were good – and nope, they had a couple of good games, couple of bad games, and mostly middle of the pack, with no real pattern.

So in that regard, I think that’s about what you’d expect from this Bucs team at worst, and likely they’ll be slightly better than that.

As for Mayfield, I’m looking at his game by game numbers in 2020 and his splits, and as Mayfield was at his best – by far – on 2nd down. Which is what happens when you have a good running game that leaves you in 2nd and medium and you can run or pass and defense can’t sit on the play (Leftwich, are you taking notes). On 3rd down, Mayfield was at his worst, which, in fairness is pretty typical of all QBs since defense generally know what is coming. But looking at 2020, by far his best season, his production was on 2nd down, meaning he was really riding that running game – and that’s clearly what the Bucs want to do in 2023.

We shall see if it works, but I’m literally putting my money on it not working and taking the under. But the money I’m putting down isn’t big money, so I’ll be more than happy to lose it if the Bucs can be in the playoff scene all year and don’t bore me to death.

  47. Hunter's Crack Pipe Says:

    stpetebucfan Says:
“Trask was not considered the best QB at his high school yet he persevered! He was done the depth charts at UF but again he persevered.”
    .
    .

It seems that Trask has never beaten anyone out in practice. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have had to spend so much time waiting his turn. Might he be one of those people who we sometimes hear about who just doesn’t practice well, but tends to flash under the big lights? History suggests so.

  48. Rod Munch Says:

WyomingJoe – I hope you’re right. I’ve watched probably an hour or so of highlights of his last two years, and each play is like 15 secs probably, so that’s a lot of plays, and he mostly looked terrible. But I also saw some really bad WR play with guys dropping easy passes – and him and his receivers not looking like they’re on the same page, etc. With as much as I don’t like Mayfield at QB and it seems like a completely obvious outcome that everyone can see coming, I still honestly do hope you’re right and we see a guy out there who was drafted #1 overall, instead of the guy who we signed who is on his 4th team in a year.

  49. Mostly Peaceful Trask Fan Says:

Trask is going to (figuratively) punch Joe right in the mouth and I’m going to spend this entire season in haughty laughter.

  50. The Beer Whisperer Says:

Maybe, Baker does a complete 180, and becomes a game manager? Instead of a game ruin-er?

    What are the odds?
    I say, not very good.

Mayfield has led the NFL in turnovers the last 3 years!!!

*If you were thinking ‘that sounds like made up BS’ you were right.

Baker has never lead the NFL in interceptions. The last three years leaders were Davis Mills ‘22, Dat Presott ‘21, and Trevor Lorence ‘20.

I don’t understand why people just make sh!t up. Making up crap just undermines your point. I never thought I’d live in a time where so many people find this to be acceptable behavior. We’ve all had liars and exaggerators around us and everyone knew to just not believe a word they said. Now it’s just everywhere.

  52. Steelers fan Says:

LOL , Baker a 1st overall pick is making 4 million (less than most backups) Trask is on a rookie wage scale he has no control over. Wait till trask blows up and see what he’s making next year or the year after.

  53. Bucsfan81 Says:

I feel like we went from one of the best QB to pretty much not even having a QB. Baker is very average at best and Trask has not even played in a real football game. This really is a lost season which I can live with as long it doesn’t turn into another lost decade.

  54. BucsFanSince1996 Says:

Many great NFL QBs didn’t look so great in their first season. They needed many reps in a real NFL game to develop. Trask has not had that yet so to judge him now at this point of his career is unfair. Baker probably will win the job just due to his experience. He does have a huge headstart over Trask. But I do expect Trask to have a long career in the NFL, with the Bucs or elsewhere. He just needs a chance, something he hasn’t had as yet.

  55. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Count me in with the Mob that believes there is no QB Battle.
I feel they drafted Mayfield to start, and are only going through the motions with Trask because Licht spent such a high draft pick on him.
I will be absolutely shocked if Mayfield is not our starter.
Not that I am any Mayfield Fanboy, because I am not.

  56. Steelers fan Says:

“”””*If you were thinking ‘that sounds like made up BS’ you were right.

Baker has never lead the NFL in interceptions. The last three years leaders were Davis Mills ‘22, Dat Presott ‘21, and Trevor Lorence ‘20.”””””

No one said he lead the league in every YEAR..(He hasnt played enough to do that due to throwing picks.)

He has lead the league in TOTAL INT’s Since he came into the league.

Since 2018, Baker Mayfield has the most interceptions, with 64 interceptions.

  57. Hunter's Crack Pipe Says:

    Steelers fan Says:
“He has lead the league in TOTAL INT’s Since he came into the league.”

    .
    .

Only because Jameis had his football taken away.

    Mayfield = Winston 2.0

  58. Defense Rules Says:

I can’t believe I’m defending Baker Mayfield, but his coaching situations have been grotesque. Tom Brady had TWO HCs in 22 years. Mayfield has already had SIX different HCs (and the same number of different OCs) in his 5 years in the league (Bowles makes the SEVENTH HC). Can you imagine being a young NFL QB and having to learn that many different offensive schemes? And have to deal with that many different personalities as your ‘bosses’?

We’ve got a very respectable starting core of players on offense & defense. Some holes … yes … but I’m not expecting 17-0. Every game will be a dogfight IMO, and I have a feeling that our end season record will largely depend on how well our starting QB(s) do at ‘managing’ the games. being consistent and taking care of the football counts. I have no clue how well Mayfield or Trask will do (whoever wins the starting nod), and neither does anyone else (including the Bucs’ coaches). But whoever wins the starting gig, I’ll be rooting for them to succeed because ‘that’s what real fans do’.

  59. Defense Rules Says:

Oops, make that THREE HCs for Brady.

  60. Voice of Truth Says:

The only reason we win six games is after Baker goes 2-7 to start the season , Trask finishes it 4-3 to spark hope for next year….just enough to pass on drafting a QB hahahahahahaha

    Greg Says:

Mayfield has led the NFL in turnovers the last 3 years!!!

He didn’t say Mayfield lead the league in the last three years combined. That’s not even a stat. Each season is individually evaluated. Prescott, Jameis sat out a year, Mills, Lorrance weren’t even in the league.

I guess Peyton Manning sucked according to that logic. 58 Ints over first 3 years or 100 Ints his first 5 years. Guess he shouldn’t have been a starter after that. Using those stats against Mayfield knowing he played with a torn labrum and rotor cuff injuries is kinda BS too.

  62. Stanglassman Says:

Let’s get the facts right. He said over 3 years and it was 64 over 5 years. He has thrown 29 over the last 3 years. That’s 102 TDs and 64 Ints over his career.

    ‘22 – 8 Ints
‘21- 13. *Played with torn labrum
    ‘20- 8
    ‘19- 21
    ‘18-14
    Total 64 * 102 TDs.

If he wrote it that way it would be correct.

  63. Wild Bill Says:

So we got a retread and virtual rookie (never got a chance to show even in preseason) . Hard to be optimistic . Hopefully one of them will ball out. Not too likely. Hope we got a great run game and tough defense.. Both qbs should be able to hand the ball off. Neither are likely good enough to carry the team if the Bucs can’t run.

  64. David Says:

As Joe says this is a fraud competition or there never had one so far. Trask has not thrown to Mike E. yet ? I do not think Trask beat anyone playing with the second team.

  65. Stanglassman Says:

If you ever read joes practice notes from the OTAs you’d know Trask passes to Godwin and Evans every practice this year. When he was the 3rd string guy he might not have but that excuse is long gone.

  66. 1sparkybuc Says:

Mayfield lost fumbles in addition to his interceptions. I believe that he leds the entire league in total turnovers since entering the league. I’m rooting for Trask. He’s home grown.

  67. garro Says:

Ok, we have heard from every unheard of “journalist” from every lame outfit in the country and I’m sure Joe will dig up a few more.
They all say pretty much the same thing.

    We get it Joe.

Although the “not feeling it” wording is new.

Maybefield “feeling it”? We shall see…Aparently…

    Go Bucs!

  68. Dwayne Cone Says:

Patriots wasted a Roster spot on Brady his 1st Season because they saw something. He did pretty much nothing the entire season. I’m sure Brady was paying attention to the at the time 100 million dollar man Drew Bledsoe. I don’t think that Trask being held back has really hurt him. He is at the very least has more knowledge.

As far as who starts for the Bucs this season? Who would want to? O Line is still untested and there is a good chance of getting busted up on a missed assignment.

Every team that inserts a young QB is going to go thru some growing pains.
Might as well do it while you got one on the cheap.

Didn’t it take Patrick Mahomes & Joe Burrow time to develop into the kind of
Quarterbacks they are today. Give the kid a break and time to develop. He has to play to gain experience and learn from his mistakes !

No. He’s from UF and this is an FSU fan boi site.

You don’t have a QB competition between two franchise QBs. You have a QB competition when you’re scraping the bottom of the barrel and hope one of them doesn’t suck as bad as the other. IDK if Mayfield can resurrect his career… I hope so. God help us if Trask starts. In all likelihood the Bucs have a top-10 draft position in 2024 for the new coaching staff to figure out.

  72. Ben Harvey Says:

No real news here, I fully expected the job to be given to Mayfield as the vet regardless, unless Trask was performing other worldly, just seems like the typical approach to give the vet a shot to show what they can do, and if it doesnt work out, the prospect gets a shot.

If you ever read joes practice notes from the OTAs you’d know Trask passes to Godwin and Evans every practice this year. When he was the 3rd string guy he might not have but that excuse is long gone.

Please stop falsely quoting Joe. He never reported Trask threw to Mike E. or Chris G. in OTA taking first team snaps. Maybe by accident or once while Baker taking restroom breaks.

  74. Carl P Says:

As much as I would love to see Baker be successful, when they signed him, Todd Bowles came out and said “I hope he’s our QB.” Yeah that tells me a lot about this upcoming season. I’m not a big fan of Bowles as a HC. As a DC he is one of the best, buy not so much as a HC. But coming out and saying you hope someone is your guy, says a lot. Unfortunately I see no playoffs this season. The bucs have a above average defense and a great WR Corp when healthy with a good o line. But Trask and Mayfield are not the answer at qb. Mayfield is not a gunslinger, he’s always been better as a game manager. Trask sat behind Brady for two years and you would think he learned something but he is also starting with a new OC and having to learn a new playback plus possibly starting a new season, so everything you learned under brady is for not really.
