“It’s Only Up From Here, Right?”

July 21st, 2023

Chris Godwin

Not known for flashy quotes or must-listen interviews, the second-leading receiver in Bucs history (receptions and yards) dropped a fun line yesterday.

That would be Chris Godwin during his chat on The Rich Eisen Show (Joe listens on SiriusXM Ch. 992). When Godwin wasn’t detailing support for the next Bucs starting quarterback, he talked about Tampa Bay’s new offense.

Godwin was clear there is now more commitment to the rushing attack. (No surprise to Joe that Todd Bowles’ dream and vision is being addressed.) But Joe looked up from a bowl of Hooters tater tots when Godwin referenced the Bucs’ miserable 2022 rushing attack and asked Eisen rhetorically, “It’s only up from here, right?”

That’s not a typical Chris Godwin line and Joe finds it telling. Godwin added that he’s very curious to see how new offensive coordinator Dave Canales reacts as a playcaller and figures out what the new version of the Bucs offense does well.

Joe always finds it interesting that nobody from One Buc Palace ever seems to say Canales has big shoes to fill replacing Super Bowl playcaller Byron Leftwich and a brilliant and versatile offensive scheme.

When a receiver knows how miserable the run game was last year, that should tell you something. It’s not the first time that Chris referenced the anemic run game.

  2. George R Says:

Does Tod now it is a passing league? The Bucs have over 50 million in WR. The Bucs are going back to Dungy offense, boy that was fun to watch.

  3. SufferingSince76 Says:

Has anyone asked Bowles why he wants a run-oriented offense when the run game sucked last year and no additions were made, especially in light of elite receivers on the team? I would love to hear his explanation.

    It’s all about the D

“Better learn balance. Balance is key. Balance good, karate good. Everything good. Balance bad, better pack up, go home. Understand?”

Running the ball better after 7 year of passing the ball > 60% of the time with varying degrees of success, you’d think a dedication to being a more balanced offensive unit would be embraced by this fanbase. Bring on that 12 & 13 personnel packages, give me some jet motions, power gapping, wide-zones with the built-in cut backs and everything else we didnt do well last season, or the year before that, or the year before that in regards to running the rock.

I think Vaughn and White have a lot more talent than others perceive. But, it’s up to Canales and the O-line to open things up. Wouldn’t it be nice for a change to see our RBs picking up first downs and occasionally taking one to the house?

  7. SlyPirate Says:

George R … If Canales runs Seattles’ offense, it’s probably the NFL’s most balanced attack. 1000 rusher and 2×1000 yard receivers. You have heard of DK Metcalf and Tyler Locket because they catch a lot of balls.

The coolest stat about Seattle vs Bucs is they had approximately the same amount of total yards but the Seattle scored 100 more points!

  8. Beej Says:

Well, if the D has to respect your ability to run the ball, passing becomes easier

  9. Infomeplease Says:

Sly Pirate, The Bucs had the similar yards as Seattle but Bowles settled for field goals in the red zone. He refused to make red zone adjustments the entire season. For one thing, he never insisted on using ME13 in the red zone!!! The Bucs best scoring machine! Just one example of what D.C. will do! Don’t just blame Leftwich! The Head Coach is “the man”!!

Well, Seattle was one of the few teams that we beat last season so what does that say?

  11. Dooley Says:

“Well, Seattle was one of the few teams that we beat last season so what does that say?”

That our offense didn’t stink for 1 day as much as they did for the entire season. Sorry Crickett, I couldn’t help it

  12. garro Says:

Honestly, neither Chris nor anyone else knows what this offense is gonna look like from some OTAs.

We probably won’t know much more during camp. The playbook we see will likely be very slim until September and the Vikings.
It is at this point just generalized talk. But what Chris said is he is curious…Me too.

    Go Bucs

  13. Crickett Baker Says:

Well, that said something. I just hope it didn’t say something about Canales. 🙂
