Punchless Offense

June 8th, 2023

“How does Monster.com work?”

This is both sad and, honestly, hard for Joe to believe.

But there it is in black and white. And it’s alarming.

You had an offense led by the greatest, Tom Brady. You had two receivers, one a borderline Hall of Fame player in Mike Evans and the other, a Pro Bowler in Chris Godwin.

Hell, the Bucs even had one of the best players for YAC in the passing game, Playoff Lenny.

And the offense was this much of a wet noodle?

Handicapper and stathead Warren Sharp pumped out a stat yesterday that, hours after Joe first read it, Joe really cannot explain it.

Sharp has a list (we’re a week away from List Season being in full bloom) that shows how many touchdowns each team scored last year from outside the red zone.

Would you believe (said in a Maxwell Smart voice) that only three teams scored fewer touchdowns from outside the red zone than the Brady-led Bucs? That just blows Joe’s mind!

The Bucs had just five touchdowns from outside the red zone in 17 games. Five! How?

The three worst teams were:

* The quitting Marcus Mariota-led Dixie Chicks (four).

* The Matty Ice/Sam Ehlinger/Nick Foles/Jeff Saturday-led Colts (three).

* The Mitch Trubisky/Kenny Pickett-led Steelers (two).

And guess who was tied with the Bucs with five? The Rams. 😳

Um…

Not surprising to me at all Joe.
Crap O-line play equals no time for QB to throw a long pass to anyone.
Lenny a YAC guy? LOL Mike Evans tries but just can’t.
Never had to respect our run game, thus play action was less effective and less used.
Godwin was never truly 100% last year.
Scooter was just being mugged by press man (never called) and shoved out of bounds.
Gage and Jones were Injured from day one…Never 100%. No one could create any consistent separation.
Game planning by Leftnut… What we saw was not the No risk it offense.
    Did I miss anything?

I’m pretty sure Canales will improve things quite a bit.

Joe, why am I in moderation?
I didn’t say anything remotely worthy of this.
If you can’t be fair or just at least be consistent

  4. Joe Says:

    Lenny a YAC guy?

14th in the NFL last year.

  5. Crickett Baker Says:

I got moderated yesterday for what I had no idea. Earlier in the week a post said it was a duplicate (although it wasn’t) and it wouldn’t publish at all.

  6. Stanglassman Says:

This makes the Canales hiring look like a brilliant move. Seattle w/16 just one behind the Eagles.

  7. Fred McNeil Says:

Canales seems to bring a fresh new approach and attitude. He worked wonders with Gino Smith. We need to modernize. We don’t just need faster players; we need to play faster.

Brady wasn’t focused and he played scared. It’s a team game but the QB is the key. He couldn’t get in the end zone. The Bucs will score more points this year no matter who plays QB, and who plays where on the OL. Brady was a handicap last season, and nobody will come right out and say it. 2020 was fantastic. 2022 sucked.

  10. David Says:

Not shocking that a Brady lead offense was methodical. And let’s face it Brady wasn’t Brady last year and the offensive line sucked and the head coach isn’t really a good one good defensive guy shi**y head guy

  11. Leighroy Says:

So much for matriculating the ball down the field huh.

Lenny a YAC guy by default. When you catch screen passes and dump offs near the line of scrimmage you must get YAC or else it’ll be a no gain. The real YAC guys are the burners who can turn a 5-8 yard crossing pattern into a 30 yard gain. Lenny doesn’t do that.

  12. HC Grover Says:

They were busy running up the gut for 1 or 2 yards.

  13. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Weren’t three of those the bombs to Evans against the pathers?

  14. Dooley Says:

“You had an offense led by the greatest, Tom Brady.”

2022 Tom Brady wasn’t even “greater” than 2022 Jared Goff, lol cut it out.

  15. realistic-optimistic Says:

The Bucs had the fewest rushing attempts in the NFL. They ranked 32 in yards/rush, and 31 in yards/pass attempt. It’s not surprising that they struggled to put it in the endzone from 20+ yards out.

  16. Tampabaybucfan Says:

It’s incredible to me that many give Brady a pass on last year’s impotent offense……any other team would blame QB play for at least part of it…..even Joe mentions QBs on all the other teams.

At least one Joe gives Brady a pass……perhaps the other doesn’t.

    Please clarify…..

  17. Marine Buc Says:

Donnie Smith’s holding penalties and a few dropped TD passes by Mike Evans didn’t help this offense and contributed to this stat…

  18. Tbbucs3 Says:

You know why Lenny was “great” in YAC last season? Because Brady forced way too many check downs for Fornette rather than standing in the pocket.

Brady was so obviously not the same last year but too many fan boys like Joe, will refused to admit it

  19. shankasorous Says:

So the Super Bowl champion Chiefs had only

  20. shankasorous Says:

So the Super Bowl champion Chiefs had only 8 and the Super Bowl loser Eagles led the league with 17. Looks like a meaningless stat.

  21. Usfbuc Says:

I wouldn’t say it’s a meaningless stat. It does show who has more explosive offenses.

The Bucs last year were also ranked 25th in RZ TD efficiency too so overall our offense was bad.

  22. Craig Says:

Been there, watched that and don’t want to be driven to drink by ineptness.

I want to be driven to drink in celebration.

  23. BillyBucco Says:

West Coast offenses are on top, so there goes anybody’s complaint about a horizontal passing scheme.

  24. Brandon Says:

Crazy how everybody gets the blame for the impotent offense except for the one actually controlling the offense, Brady…. nobody gets a free pass like the GOAT.

Lenny is no YAC monster… he never met a DB that couldn’t get him to the ground. Lots of YAC but still only SIX yards or so per reception. Must be all of those throws the GOAT threw to him behind the line of scrimmage.

  25. Destinjohnny Says:

It’s what happens when u have the worst line in football
Why is this so hard to sort out for some people?

  26. Buccos Says:

Brady was subpar last season. After watching the Carolina game with the 3 deep bombs for TD’s to Evans I was like where has this been all season. But they were unable to continue that moving forward. I guess it was a fluke or just an outlier. It was a terrible tease to be sure. And it shows that Brady hasn’t lost the arm strength. I think he just got scared. He didn’t want anyone to rearrange his pretty boy face

    Beat me to it!
That was the second to last game in the season too!

  28. PA Buc Fan Says:

Shouldn’t we be concerned that Carr led LV who tied for the most tds outside of 20+ yards. I think Saints runaway with this division this year although I think their head coach like ours is a joke but a bit more competent. I think Saints have a solid roster. I hate that team with a passion but I am looking at it without my Bucs goggles on!

That sorta thing happens when your offense is run middle, run left, checkdown, punt.
