“Kyle Trask Is Going To Have To Do Something Extraordinary”

June 5th, 2023

Kyle Trask

Quarterback David Carr knows all about being a No. 1 overall draft pick who got off to a rough start.

Carr walked into an expansion team, the 2002 Houston Texans, and took a beating.

After 10-plus years in the NFL, Carr is now a quarterback guru for NFL Network.

He’s been studying the Bucs’ quarterback competition and talked about it on an extended Tampa Bay segment recently.

“Sounds like it’s going to be a little bit more unconventional, maybe a spread’em-out type of play-action pass offense,” Carr said.

He want to say a tie in the Bucs’ QB battle surely will go to Baker Mayfield. So Kyle Trask will have a higher performance bar.

“If it’s even [in the competition], like Kyle Trask is going to have to do something extraordinary to unseat all the things I just heard over the last few minutes from our investigative reporter to the [Bucs’] GM to the head coach, ” Carr said. “They love what Baker Mayfield brings. I personally love [what Baker Mayfield brings].”

Time to wow the bosses, Kyle!

  1. realistic-optimistic Says:

One can only wonder how much more confident Trask would be right now if Bowles had started him against ATL and let him work out the kinks for an entire game. But as we all know, that did not happen. And as a result, I agree with Carr.

  2. Bee Says:

Love what Baker brings. Um…what is it that Baker brings besides the worst QBR known to man?

  3. Tye Says:

All things considered equal, I expect the Bucs to start the Season with Mayfield…
He is older, more experienced, and IF he keeps the starter role, Trask can be further developed under this new OC and then next season is the defining moment… Resign Mayfield or let him walk so Trask takes over…..

Canales will know by next draft whether the Bucs need a new qb or not!

  4. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

I have read that Tom Brady insisted on a veteran backup, so that deprived Trask of sitting next to him during games, the way Gabbert did.
In my mind, Trask has way more upside than Baker Mayfield.
IMHO, there is no QB Competition. We are gonna start Mayfield. So don’t plan on seeing Trask play, unless and until Mayfield fails.

  5. Buc4evr Says:

Yeah, everyone loves what Mayfield brings until they see it at game time. The guy is going to lose his job by the 4th game of the season. Look for Trask to start after the bye week. This is going to be an epic season…. Lol.

  6. Guzzie55 Says:

Remember how everyone touted McClown before that horrible season with a bad HC, this has a similar feeling, hoping a journeyman talent of a QB can magically become a serviceable or maybe good QB, and the coach finally gets it, this has more nightmares than fairy tales written all over it, but at least we get in position to dream of finally drafting a franchise QB

  7. View from 132 Says:

So Trask is a wasted 2nd round pick unless he blows everyone away? Premature to say that. He needs to manage the game, make good decisions, and show that he will continue to get better.

I think if he ever does star in this league, we’ll hear how angry he must be about sitting behind Gabbert, especially if it was because of Brady’s preference. He should’ve played the entire Atlanta game. Huge missed opportunity to see what we had here.

  8. Craig Says:

If Mayfly doesn’t hurt himself, Trask will have to reach spectacular levels to get the start. Extraordinary won’t be enough.

The Bowles cleaner knows he has to break 500 this season, and feels he needs and experienced QB to do it.

It is just one of the ways I think he is wrong, but he gets the big bucks.

  9. Brandon Says:

For those still hung up on Brady…this is where he ranked in the NFL

    Completions 1
Attempts 1 (34 more than next closest person despite exiting week 17 early)
    Yards 3
Sack Percent 1 (closest person was 3.8 to his 2.9)
    Int % 2
    QB Rating 18
    QBR 18
    Yards Att 30
    Yards Com 32
    TD percent 24
    Team points 25

    league average rating 89.1… Brady’s 90.7
People want to point his stats and wonder how we’re going to replace that…. he was statistically one of the worst QBs in the league. Only one QB with a better QB rating than him had a losing record (like him). The dude is toast. If Mayfield can play ANYTHING like he did in 2020, this team will have an offensive resurgence.

  10. BillyBucco Says:

This is the obvious narrative for everyone involved.
You honestly think Bowles starts Trask after EVERYONE is saying Baker is the obvious choice, even Brady.
Bowles knows he is on the hotseat.
At least starting Trask you know the answer next draft.
If he rides Baker to 7-10 or even 10-7and a playoff loss what do we actually know.
I don’t think Baker will make it through the season so they will know and Trask will play. Otherwise, what are people dreaming of 14-3 or something?
Bad teams know the problem and this is more than likely a bad team.

  11. Defense Rules Says:

Baker Mayfield was in EXACTLY the same position this time last year with the Panthers … and he blew it. Big time.

He was brought in to be the Panthers starting QB, and did in fact start off the season that way. Went 1-5 with them before being shipped off to the Rams. And for those who say the Panthers were ‘tanking’, that’s horsepuckey. They just sucked with Mayfield as their QB.

Panthers won 2 of their first 7 games. Baker got 1 win (against Jameis who threw 2 INTs & fumbled twice enroute to a 22-16 loss). PK Walker got the other win (against the Bucs 21-3 … doesn’t sound like tanking to me).

After Mayfield (and McCaffrey) left after the 42-21 loss to the Bengals halfway through the season, the Panthers went 5-3 the rest of the way. So with Mayfield they went 1-5; with Walker & Darnold they went 6-5. They obviously both need to be traded like Mayfield was; worst job of tanking I’ve ever seen.

  12. Buc1987 Says:

    Go Trask!

  13. shankasorous Says:

If the Bucs don’t start Trask now, and I’m Trask’s agent, I start looking right now into other teams for Trask’s 5th year. No way I advise him to resign with such a dysfunctional organization.

  14. shankasorous Says:

Defense Rules Says: “Baker Mayfield went 1-5 with the Panthers before being shipped off to the Rams…. The Panthers finished 5-3.”

The Bakettes never let facts get in the way of their opinions.

  15. shankasorous Says:

BillyBucco Says: “EVERYONE is saying Baker is the obvious choice, even Brady.”

You have a link to Brady saying that? Didn’t think so.

  16. realistic-optimistic Says:

Baker Mayfield was in EXACTLY the same position this time last year with the Panthers

I have to disagree. Cleveland traded Mayfield to Carolina on July 6, 2022, one month before their first preseason game.

If you have low expectations for the guy, that’s fine. So do I. But he did not get the same offseason last year as he’s getting this year.

I just hope the competition isn’t a ruse because Bowles is afraid of his hot seat.

  17. Hodad Says:

Carr is wrong, Trask just needs to do the ordinary. Make the play that’s there, don’t try to be extraordinary, no hero ball. White paid Trask that compliment recently saying he takes what’s there, managers the game. Do that, he should start.

  18. Oneilbuc Says:

To all of you who believe Todd Bowles is pressure to be at leas .500 haven’t really looked at his situation. Bowles is 65 years old with a Superbowl ring as a player and DC . He also has a garuteen contact with the NFL pinchin once he gets fired or he retires. He will be able to spend more time with his family and I think he has a kid playing highschool football and one in college playing football and he will be still getting paid millions while he’s at home that’s not what I will call a guy that has a lot of pressure on him !!

  19. Defense Rules Says:

realistic-optimistic … OK so it wasn’t EXACTLY the same in terms of timing, but pretty close. Baker missed OTAs with the Panthers, but still had the whole preseason and started Game 1. Take a look at what he did in each game last season (including the Rams games), and I can’t see how anyone would be impressed with his leadership of either offense. Granted timing wasn’t ideal, but he’s not a rookie either.

If he ‘wins’ the starting job, I’ll enthusiastically root for him, just like I do for all Bucs players. But his past reminds me too much of Jameis … some really great plays, interspersed with some of the most frustrating brain farts I’ve ever seen.

BTW, Trask reminds me a lot of Brad Johnson for some reason (and not just because they’re the same size). Brad pretty much spent his first 2 years on the bench with Minnesota (hey, he was a 9th Round pick), only getting in 9 total games, throwing for 0 TDs against 2 INTs when he did get in (and rushing for MINUS 11 yards). Hey, no one ever said that Brad was fleet afoot.

But once he got a chance (3 more years with the Vikings plus 2 years with the Redskins) he went 32-18 before coming to Tampa for 4 years. Granted he was more of a game manager than anything else, but he displayed decent ball security & made it work … to the tune of QBing us to a Super Bowl in 2002.

  20. Buc4evr Says:

Everybody is wrong. By the 12th game Wolford will be starting…. Baker will be out after the bye, Trask will tank and Wolford will be named the new starter.
    …. It’s a Bucs Life. Lol.

  21. Just Leave Trask Alone Says:

Mayfield got B T F O in the last couple of days in the comments so damage control has been deployed.

Look Joe no matter how loud this sales job is – it’s not going to work.

Mayfield is a bad QB – provably. It’s in black and white – the numbers are there for everyone to see.

  22. Steelers fan Says:

“Love what Baker brings. Um…what is it that Baker brings besides the worst QBR known to man?”

MY GOD. I swear i dont know how/why these people think Baker can play QB in the NFL. These are so called ‘experts’ and every single one of them are like brain washed zommbies when it comes to Baker. THE GUY HAS BEEN GARBAGE HIS WHOLE NFL STAY!!!!! and thats just the truth and no matter how many times these guys say hes whatever we all know its TOTAL BS (You dont have to be an expert weve all seen it we all know what weve seen that that wont and cant change) Its like a science experiment weve all done it and we know the outcome and that wont change.

  23. Salary Cap Hell Says:

Bowels will screw up whatever or whoever is quarterbacking….. Why? Because thats what he did with TB12.

  24. AtlBuc Says:

I totally disagree with what Carr said. I think that if both players are even Trask gets the nod. If they are playing at the same level, why would they not play the guy with the bigger upside. They’ve seen what Mayfield can, or can’t, do and if it’s an even competition, will give Trask the reps.

  25. EEK Says:

Maybe the most compelling story of the Bucs’ offseason
I just can’t wait to see how this unfolds

  26. AtlBuc Says:

AND!!!! I don’t believe in this imaginary ‘hot seat” under Bowles. Ownership is well aware of the cap and QB situation that were beyond Bowles’ control. Unless he blows chunks and wins only 3 or games, he will be back next year. Unless the primary directive is to tank which I don’t believe unless Mayfield starts.

  27. Redeemer Says:

Chris, why would Brady care who his backup is? He wasn’t the head coach, and never came out of games anyway. It’s cover. The coaches determine the backup not the starter no matter if he’s the goat. They know what they have in Trask. Thats the reason he didnt dress

  28. AtlBuc Says:

    Redeemer.

The backup qb does a lot more than carry a clipboard. He does a lot in preparation for the game. That’s why Brady wanted an experienced backup because he didn’t want to train Trask on gameday.

  29. Salary Cap Hell Says:

You all are missing it ….. Bowels is still the head coach why expect a differant outcome ?

  30. shankasorous Says:

Redeemer Says: “The coaches know what they have in Trask.”

Absolutely. That is why, contrary to all the pre-draft predictions here, the Bucs passed on Will Levis and Hendon Hooker in the first round of the draft, passed on Hendon Hooker again in the second round of the draft, and did not draft any quarterback in any round of the draft. Because “they know what they have in Trask.”

  31. Bucsfan13 Says:

@DefenseRules. You nailed it! The best writers and fans were salivating over Baker this time in Carolina. You heard the same words like “swagger” and “moxie.” He then folded when the season started and was benched. The Panthers were not tanking during that period. Darnold and Walker both played better than Mayfield.

@Brandon. You really need to seek help for your Brady obsession. No lie. He’s living rent free in your head. You make every post by Joe about Brady. He’s gone. It’s time to move on. Show us where Brady hurt you?

  32. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Something worth considering:

Carr is playing for a division rival and will want us to have the worse of the two…so trying to influence it to be Baker could be his way of trying to influence things.

  33. The Beer Whisperer Says:

Ya know it’s bad, if we’re debating Baker Mayfield.

  34. realistic-optimistic Says:

@Buccaneer Bonzai – Interesting observation. It sounds crazy, but maybe not…

  35. shankasorous Says:

Buccaneer Bonzai Says: “Carr is playing for a division rival and will want us to have the worse of the two…so trying to influence it to be Baker could be his way of trying to influence things.”

And the Baker fanbois fall for it!

  36. Let's Go Brandon! Says:

Yeah it might be time for Kyle to pack it up and look for greener pastures. Hoped Tampa would work out but hey, that’s the NFL.

  37. stpetebucfan Says:

So some wish to couch the debate in “facts” versus “opinions”.

It is a FACT that Mayfield took an historically bad franchise in the Browns and led them not only to the playoffs but a win over arch rival Pittsburgh on the road and a near miss against Mahomes and the Chiefs the next week.

It is also a FACT that Mayfield was not successful with the Panthers last year. However in that very same year Mayfield looked respectable with the Rams.

Facts and opinions contradict in this debate. Even with Trask the late bloomer who was nothing until his last year in high school and then the same thing with UF so perhaps he’ll pull off the same trick in the NFL?

  38. David Says:

    Joe,
You are quoting nine blogs in favor of Baker and one in favor of Trask. You are working so hard to sell Baker to us. Like I said before Todd B. will start his boy Baker no matter what.

  39. ATLBuc Says:

Mayfield last year and career stats. Note the YPC and interception rate.
CMP ATT CMP% YDS AVG TD INT LNG RTG
    201 335 60.0 2,163 6.5 10 8 75 79.0
    1386 2259 61.4 16,288 7.2 102 64

  40. shankasorous Says:

stpetebucfan Says: “Trask the late bloomer”

You keep saying crap like this but all it shows is that you don’t know what you’re talking about.

Trask is not a “late bloomer”. He played at UF 4 years: 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020. In only his second year, 2018, he beat out the much higher-ranked and uber-hyped Feleipe Franks (now with the Falcons) for the starting QB job. Trask sustained an injury and could not finish out the 2018 season. He then had a great 2019 season and a stellar Heisman-finalist 2020 season. He then entered the draft.

For a St. Pete resident, you know surprisingly little about Trask, who played only a couple hours from you. FSU fan?

  41. Joe Says:

You are quoting nine blogs in favor of Baker and one in favor of Trask

Joe doesn’t keep score. If you know of reputable folks who think Trask has this wrapped up, let Joe know.

  42. gotbbucs Says:

Baker is great at talking, and the media loves that.

He’s a bottom 3rd NFL QB. His ceiling is always going to be maybe, just maybe, squeaking into the playoffs. His floor is worst QB in the league(last year). You have to have an amazing defense and top 5 running game to be able to even sniff the playoffs with a QB like that.

Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray owe Lincoln Riley a lot of money.

  43. AtlBuc Says:

“Reputable folks” are predicting a quarterback with the following stats will win the QB competition: Not the TD to INT % also the avg. YPC.

CMP ATT CMP% YDS AVG TD INT
    201 335 60.0 2,163 6.5 10 8 2022
    1386 2259 61.4 16,288 7.2 102 64 Career

  44. fwfan Says:

Really don’t know why a lot of Buc fans think they are a superbowl contender with either of these QBs. 8-9 in the worst division in football and they get dominated against an average Dallas team at home in the playoffs. Lot of you are delusional.

  45. garro Says:

Ok so the NFL Network has hired yet another former player to spout his opinions.
Umm …Who exactly is this “investigative reporter”?
    What a load of BS
I think David Carr might have taken one too many sacks.

    Go Bucs
