Inside The Hunger Of Dave Canales

June 5th, 2023

New Bucs playcaller Dave Canales.

Joe got a bigger whiff of the fire and fight within offensive coordinator Dave Canales last week.

Joe knew Canales was motivated, driven, organized and seemingly very ready for his new gig, but what Canales shared on the No Off Days podcast was a little eye-opening.

Many fans may remember that Canales has a signifcant relationship with Hall of Fame head coach Father Dungy, who lives in Tampa and has a spot in the Buccaneers Ring of Honor.

What Joe learned on the podcast is that Canales has been turning to Dungy with “big-picture” questions for at least the past few years, he said. Becoming an offensive coordinator was “something that I’ve been really looking forward to for a long time,” Canales added, and he noted that Dungy was there for him after the disappointment of “getting passed up” for the same job with the Seahawks.

Hmm, Joe wonders what size chip Canales might have on his shoulder?

The new Bucs playcaller recalled how he was slapped in the face with the reality of not being the boss a few times, presumably during his 10-plus years in Seattle.

He said he would complain to one of his mentors about a play and the unnamed mentor would tell him, “If you don’t like it, find a new offense.”

Joe is pacing the halls of JoeBucsFan.com world headquarters, eager to get a glimpse of the Bucs’ new-look offense. The mystery should be in Canales’ favor, and hopefully the Vikings are running around dazed and confused on opening day.

Excited to see what canales does with the offense.

  2. Marine Buc Says:

Bruce Arians really screwed us with that whole Byron Leftwhich BS last year.

I love the old man but that was a di@K move.

  3. shankasorous Says:

Just not doing anything Leftwhich did would be an improvement.

  4. D-Rok Says:

    Test

  5. D-Rok Says:

GRRRR now I’m posting comments too quickly. Slow down, it says. 🙁

  6. D-Rok Says:

I give up. Fix your algorithm on this site please, Joes. FRUSTRATING!!!!!!!!

  7. K2 Says:

The Bucs now have a play caller…and Sean Payton is in Denver. Those two things are great for the Bucs!!!

I don’t like Sean Payton…but he’s one of the best coaches in the NFL!

  8. HC Grover Says:

Glad he got this chance. He will be hindered by Bowles HC/DC blunders.

  9. HC Grover Says:

Marine Buc has the situation right. Ariens screwed us, He was jealous of Brady. Brady was the reason we won. Not Ariens.

  10. The Beer Whisperer Says:

What are we complaining about, today?
I don’t want to be “off topic”

  11. Kidfloflo Says:

H.C Grover, Arians was coach of the year twice! He made Winston’s numbers into pro bowl caliber stats except he couldnt control the picks….he had the forthsight to dump him and grab Tom, and with less picks and better game management brought ANOTHER Super Bowl win to Tampa….to quote Jameis, check ur sheets!

  12. D-Rok Says:

    Joe,
Let’s hope your practice notes from training camp reflects this new offensive philosophy. That, plus the first 3 pre-season games, should give us a glimpse of what is to come.

Hopefully this new (to us Bucs fans) offense will reap many dividends and rewards, starting with Vikes Week 1.

All I want is the team to be competitive. Is that too much to ask for a professional football team that I root for?

    GOBUCS!!!

  13. Mike Says:

I do like his enthusiasm! I just hope it can translate to production on the field for the Bucs offense.

  14. The Beer Whisperer Says:

If you can’t dazzle them with brilliance, just baffle them with bull.

    Words to live by.

  15. RustyRhinos Says:

Thanks, Joe for an interesting Podcast. Coach Canales just may have that chip on his shoulder, ready to take his opportunity and run with it. Thanks, Pete Carrol, I think you have cultured and educated a fired-up and OC-ready chip off your old block.
    Good hire.

I saw a write-up on the OC Canales worked under the last two seasons when he first started in Seattle as OC in 19. He came over from the Rams, and there were several (non-useful) pre-season game films of that Offense and its many wrinkles. It was an eye-opening display to me of what we may just see on the field this season. It has been a long time since we motioned and moved around and ran those play types they used in their oh-so (non-useful) pre-season games. If ever.

    GO!!!!!BUCS!!!!!

  16. The Beer Whisperer Says:

Coach Cajones, is already legend…. in some people’s minds.

  17. Fred McNeil Says:

It’s something very hopefully to look forward to.

  18. JD Still Says:

I guess we are going to see how getting screwed by a team a couple of years in a row is going to affect the performances of several people.

  19. Biff Barker Says:

Ariens cast a sea of ambivalence on this franchise.

  20. The Beer Whisperer Says:

If Coach Cajones were able to fix Baker Mayfield, then, I would be impressed.

  21. kaimaru69 Says:

    @The Beer Whisperer

I say we put Canales in the ring of honor during pre-season

  22. Doug Says:

He will be our next head coach.

  23. Bojim Says:

Can’t wait for the season. I think Dave will surprise a lot of people. In a good way.

  24. westernbuc Says:

Anyone who’s paying attention should be excited this year.

  25. TOMMY MORDUE Says:

I BELIEVE DAVE CANALES WAS THE BEST CHOICE FOR OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR THIS TEAM NEEDED..I’M LOOKING FOR THE OFFENSE TO BE VASTLY IMPROVED IN ALL AREAS. ( NO TOM BRADY BUT MAYFIELD & TRASK CA BOTH HOLD THEIR OWN IN THIS LEAGUE ) THEY ARE BOTH HUNGRY & MOTIVATED TO PROVE THEMSELVES UNDER A VERY DRIVEN YOUNG OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR..FRESH STARTS FOR BOTH FORMER 1ST & 2ND ROUND PICKS, ONE A HEISMAN WINNER, THE OTHER A FINALIST ( WITH AT LEAST 43 TD PASSES HIS SENIOR YEAR AT FLORIDA IN 2020 SEASON..THEY HAVE A FINE WR ROOM & RASHAD WHITE WILL BLOSSOM AS OUR LEAD BACK BEHIND OUR RESHUFFLED & REVAMPED OFFENSIVE LINE..THE DEFENSE WILL BE YOUNGER & FASTER & FORCE MORE TURNOVERS THIS YEAR, GIVING THE OFFENSE MORE OPPORTUNITIES TO SCORE..THESE SO-CALLED EXPERTS MOSTLY DON’T KNOW WHAT THE HELL THEIR TALKING ABOUT WHEN IT COMES TO OUR BUCCANEERS !..TOM BRADY WAS THE G.O.A.T. NO DOUBT..BUT HE’S NOT THE ONLY QUARTERBACK WHO HAS EVER BEEN A WINNER IN THIS LEAGUE ! ! ! BEWARE NFL WORLD..THIS TEAM WILL ROLL OVER FOR NO REASON ONE & YOUR ALL GOING TO BE SURPRISED AT HOW QUICKLY THIS TEAM COMES TOGETHER & FIGHTS TO THE END OF EACH & EVERY GAME ! ! WE WILL WIN OUR DIVISION & WE WILL HOST THE 1ST PLAYOFF GAME..FROM THERE ON WE WILL ALL JUST HAVE TO SEE..

Ariens cast a sea of ambivalence on this franchise.

I have no idea what this even means or how it’s possible. And I don’t hear ambivalence from fans.

  27. sasquatch Says:

    Hey TOMMY MORDUE,

Are you ever going to figure out how to turn off CAPS LOCK? You do realize that ALL CAPS is the internet equivalent of yelling everything and it makes you look like a dumbass… though your words alone probably demonstrate that as well.

  28. @CABucs Says:

Doug, I think you’re right, Canales will be that top young OC who gets offers for HC in the next year or two and Bucs retain him once they blow Bowles out of town.

  29. Pickgrin Says:

If the Bucs win more games than they lose in 2023 – then Bowles will likely be here as HC for his full 5 year contract and perhaps beyond if he keeps winning.

Canales will be a HC somewhere else in 1-2 years if he manages to turn Baker Mayfield into a top 15 QB and wins more games with a better offense than just last year when TB12 was here.

  30. Buc4evr Says:

Just wish Canales had a better QB to work with. Think he will have to severely limit plays for an inaccurate QB with the lowest QBR in the nfl. He certainly will have to continually adjust the offense to mask the QBs weaknesses. Will not be fun….

  31. steele Says:

The question is why Rah Rah was never given the job in Seattle, after years of hyper-energy and devotion at the Pete Carroll shrine. Oh well. It’s time to actually do something besides bark.

  32. Defense Rules Says:

Sure does seem like a lot of Bucs fans are grasping at straws this year. In the case of Canales, could we please let him call 1 play before we put him in the Ring of Honor or make him head coach?

And Joe, I guess I missed the earlier articles about Canales knowing Tony Dungy for apparently several years. The fact that ‘Dungy was there for him after the disappointment of “getting passed up” for the same job with the Seahawks’ is pretty significant IMO. I wonder what role, if any, Tony played in getting Canales hired as the Bucs’ OC.

  33. Craig Says:

    Pickgrin’s got it.

This is Canales first step into the big leagues. It will not be his last.

If he can develop a QB here and be able to make an exciting and productive offense, his name will rise quickly. Maybe in a year or two he will take the HC title away from the Bowles cleaner.

  34. TonySoprano Says:

It’s always exciting when a new signal caller enters the league. But let’s pump the brakes on promoting him to a head coaching gig. I do find it a bit of a red flag he spent so much time with Seattle and was never given a chance as OC. But I’m optimistic. At least he’s going in with the right attitude, energy and an apparent willingness to put in the work

…something Halfwhich never seemed to have. We really got the worst of both worlds with that boob. Not only was he terrible at X’s and 0’s, he showed no passion, charisma, leadership abilities, nor the slightest sense he wanted to get better at his craft.

  35. Fansince76 Says:

That worries me some that he was passed over in Seattle for the OC Job there.
I did not know that thanks for the info but its not good.

  36. Tbbucs3 Says:

We know he’s good at posting meaningless quotes on Twitter….but can he call plays?

  37. Onetrickpony Says:

He can’t be any worse than the last OC, can he?

  38. Tbbucs3 Says:

“He can’t be any worse than the last OC, can he?”

Well the last OC helped us win a Superbowl and had a great working relationship with the greatest QB of all time, so to answer your question, yes.

  39. Tbbucs3 Says:

Hilarious how some of these commenters work.

2020+2021= 0 credit to Bryon Leftwhich all credit goes to Arians and Brady
2022= all blame to Leftwhich none to Brady.

  40. Andrew Fish Says:

I can see this being a Dirk Koetter, Lovie Smith situation again.
