Carlton Davis Wants To Bring “New Culture” To Bucs

June 6th, 2023

Veteran cornerback Carlton Davis.

Odd choice of words today by Buccaneers No. 1 cornerback Carlton Davis.

The sixth-year corner is a veteran nowadays and he spoke after practice today about experiencing and enjoying new faces on the Tampa Bay roster.

“I’m happy to be here to, you know, teach the young guys and bring a new culture to the team,” Davis said.

Joe heard that and quickly thought, “Why do the Bucs need a new culture?” First, it’s Year 5 of Todd Bowles as the Buccaneers’ defensive mastermind and most defensive coaches have been the same for the past several years. Second, Joe has heard Bucs officials and other players talk about how great the team’s locker room culture is. So what needs to change?

Considering spring practice barely are a flag football equivalent this time of year, words mean a little more than they do in August and September. And that sure was some strange phrasing by Davis, especially since he later said teams underestimating the Bucs are going to get punched in the mouth and realize it’s the same culture of the past few seasons.

Perhaps more is changing at One Buc Palace in the post-Tom-Brady era than it appears.

We have drafted a lot of defensive players and offensive line players with high picks that have been marginal.
    JTS
    Logan
Luke G and Haisney to name a few.
I think he is saying that these below average/underperforming overdrsfted players need to step up

  2. Durango95 Says:

I don’t read him as using “culture” by its strict definition. He was using the term more broadly. Carrying the culture on to the new players. That’s the way I took it.

  3. zzbucs Says:

Would be great if some teached him how to tackle….

  4. Sly Pirate Says:

Captain Devin White obviously isn’t a good leader. CDIII is taking his spot.

  5. sasquatch Says:

There is always change. Tweaks are coming to the defense. There’s more expected of younger players. Every year is a new culture and a new team. This shouldn’t be confusing. Of course you retain the positive working relationships and attitude as much as possible, but you have to re-invent every year, especially with young players coming in.

Change may be in not having a losing season next year. I wouldn’t read too much into it Joe.

Maybe he was referencing Devon White !!!

Maybe he sprang for frozen yogurt.

I take it as meaning they will be more physical

    By D White

I think we’re parsing the words of a football player who is used to speaking in football metaphors. Nothing to see here.

  13. Hammerhead Says:

    D White Fer sure.

  14. Davenport Says:

I think thats aimed at 45 — how can a guy who sh”t talks the team be a leader? Take a 2024 3rd & be done with him.

  15. SlyPirate Says:

    BIG PROBLEM

If CDIII is referencing D White, this points to a major rift in the locker room. LVD has been vocal in the past about DW’s attitude. So … Why is Licht hanging onto him? Don’t let the culture erode for a MLB. They are not that hard to come by.

  16. Defense Rules Says:

sasquatch … ‘There is always change. Tweaks are coming to the defense.’

I agree sasquatch, but I have this hunch that it’ll be more than just ‘tweaks’ this year. Gut feeling is that Bowles was really concerned about how our defense underperformed in relation to the 2019-2021 years. The drop-off in run defense (from #1, #1 & #3 in 2019-2021 way down to #15 last season) is probably eating at him. And without possible HOFers like Suh & JPP it should’ve been expected. Youngsters like Hall & JTS don’t replace talent like that (at least overnight).

I’m still intrigued by the Bucs bringing in George Edwards to work with the guys up front. I know he was hired to work with the OLBs, but given his history (4-3 defenses exclusively it appears) I can’t help but think that he’ll have a major impact on a lot of new strategies & tactics in the whole Front-7. Time will tell I guess.

How many readers on this site can accurately define “culture” without looking it up?

  18. David Says:

There sure has been a lot of talk about “the culture“. I thought all that changed with Brady and the Super Bowl… But the moment Bruce Arians stepped aside, and Todd Bowles took over, it seemed like Brady was not all in last year, very distracted, and the culture went to heck with the current coaching staff.

    Very concerning

  19. Nybuccguy Says:

Brady wasn’t all in last year. The team knew it, and quit

  20. sasquatch Says:

    @David,
Culture isn’t just fixed. It has to be recreated each year. It helps to have experience and history of winning, but there was a whole lotta crap going on last year that impacted the team. Can’t all be blamed on Bowles. Brady was checked out in many ways.

You can bet that Canales brings a positive vibe and the right culture to the offense. Whether that translates into wins remains to be seen.

As a Brady fan and defender like I wrote on here many times Brady wanted to go to Miami. Gisele and Brady were building a house there and I think Brady thought going to Miami would allow him to keep playing. Gisele hates football and her nagging drained on Brady. So he retired then unretired. Brady and Gisele went on a European vacation before training camp. Google it there are pictures of them having fun. They come back Brady sends Kelsey Plum the jersey she puts that on the internet. Brady’s life has never been the same since that event. Gisele leaves him Brady gets depressed and loses 27 pounds. From that point on Bucs season was ruined. Brady let the Gisele divorce affect his play Dont forget FTX collapse. I thought he would be better now being free. I also thought there was no way he was retiring after the season. I thought he deserved a do over and Brady was going to have a great season in 2023. The unsealed documents of the divorce lie the truth. Brady promised to retire as part of divorce agreement

  23. Brady Bucs Says:

Imagine Brady resigned with Bucs and Kim Kardashian going to all his games. That would have been a circus. I dont like kim but would have enjoyed the craziness of it all
