Jamel Dean Better Than You May Think?

June 22nd, 2023

Big time ranking.

Jamel Dean said as underwear football season closed that as long the Bucs’ team cafeteria was open, he was coming into the building to work out.

Joe guesses it is fair to guess the cafeteria staff is on vacation now.

Those who follow Dean on social media have seen he’s in Germany this week. The players union (NFLPA) sent representatives to Frankfurt, where the Dolphins will play the Chiefs and the Colts will play the Belicheats.

No, no Munich this year.

(If anyone has seen Dean’s pictures, the soccer dome in Frankfurt where the NFL games will play has a low-hanging scoreboard. Over/under has to be 1.5 punts per game hitting that thing.)

The NFL players are there to pimp this fall’s games and spread the good word of football on foreign soil through camps, pressing flesh, etc.

So why is Joe bringing this up? Well, it seems the NFLPA may be rewarding Dean with a free (discounted?) trip, not just for being one of the higher-paid corners in the game, but for being one of the best.

Per Sports Info Solutions, a heavy-duty stat outfit, Dean is a top-10 corner in the league. He is ranked by SIS as No. 10 (by way of The33rdTeam.com). Carlton Davis strangely comes in at No. 35.

Joe believes the Bucs have a shot of having a dominant secondary. Davis finds ways to shut down teams’ No. 1 receivers. Dean is underrated by many. Antoine Winfield is an excellent safety and NextGen Stats believes Ryan Neal is a total steal.

Unfortunately, it still comes down to a pass rush. It always does. You can have one of the best secondaries in the NFL and if you can’t get heat on a quarterback, it doesn’t matter.

Right you are Joe. Even the best can only cover for so long.

    Go Bucs!

BTW I wish Goodell and company would stop with the globalization crap and just fix the stupid BS going on in the American game. Like the excessive penalties and rule changes.

I can’t get the Bucs last game played out of my head.
Our secondary couldn’t cover little bo peep, or her lost sheep.
The lot of them were a complete embarrassment.
    And on national tv.
Then the Bucs gives one of them a huge raise. New contract.
That move will remain a complete mystery to me.
To reward failure is to encourage failure.

I couldn’t find that exact list from Sports Info Solutions. I’m curious how SMB fared on that list. Did we keep the right CB in Dean?

Just hope he doesn’t challenge a German to a race.

What planet are some people on, and whatever so called lists. Come on, really. This secondary has one good stretch in many years. It was the Playoffs and Super Bowl they won in the 2020 season. For years before that and now after that. They have been average to below. Lawn Chairs is right. How about some reality. They got it handed to them even in the last game played, Bradys last game???? CHILD PLEASE!!!
    This is worth repeating….

Do people actually watch the games played???? Make a list, great. But it is the play on the field that matters and Dean still plays not to get beat, SCARED!! Just ask Deon Sanders “95% of DB’s play not to get beat” You are not some great DB if you play not to get beat, sorry, Deon would just laugh. Is Dean Talented, YES. But that has nothing to do with playing not to get beat, that is about mentality and confidence or lack there of.

  7. Brandon Says:

Anybody that doesn’t see that Dean is an exceptionally good CB really shouldn’t be commenting on football. He has the stats (ratings and rankings), paycheck, and league wide recognition, as well as what you see on the field to prove it. Someone just commented that Dean plays not to get beat… yes, exactly. And that’s why you should never comment again. Are you saying he should play to get beat and take unnecessary chances? You don’t know the D that is called. In cover 3 a CBs main responsibility is to cover a deep third of the field. Man cover and cover 3 CBs shouldn’t be taking unnecessary risks. There is no one to back them up. Apparently, you don’t understand football. Dean’s opponents completion percentage and pass break ups are at the top of the league since he entered the league and has only gotten better. Stop talking.

Does anyone know the grades for all of the tackles taken in the 2020 1st round, especially the ones taken before Wirfs

Our secondary deff has the personal to be really good this year. I like how CDlll n dean have developed. CDlll really doesn’t get enough credit. He quietly shuts down teams tops WRs. Dean is long fast and isn’t scared of contact. Everything you want in a DB. Winfield is back at playing outfield where he is best. That super bow season he did really good back there. Ask cheetah who thru up the deuces last lol. Seems like Neal is a steal only time will tell but we seriously have to get a pass rush and desperately. Guys can only cover for so long before someone gets open. Even the worst QB that doesn’t have any pressure will pick defenses apart. Come on pass rush. I wanna see QBs eaten grass all game long

When you make a outrageous claim like the Hainsey is better than Wirfs you should bring the receipts. Otherwise everyone you’re the
Lols. IE Site (Cut and paste) the article. Quote at least.

Dean is a stud. I’m with Brandon if you can’t recognize it, its on you. But like the article states dbs need a pass rush if they don’t any teams secondary would eventually get beat.

  14. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

The way the Bucs secondary stunk up the field on national tv at home last year against the mighty Dallas cowboys in a playoff opener told me these guys couldn’t care less how the fans feel.
This is why I’ll continue to forecast 3-14 for this year complete with two late mercy draft position wins at the end of this year.
Because givin the circumstances, if they can’t get fired up for that environment, they can’t get fired up.
And if the coaches refuse to recognize that, we’re gonna see just how long they last….employed.
Because the ultimate arbitrator are the fans.

No one knew who Ronde Barber was until like year 3…just sayin’.

  16. Dooley Says:

Coverage sacks are a thing. With the way teams try to beat us with a quick passing game as a tact to negate our occasionally aggressive and consistently fast defense, locking up all the underneath stuff may give our rush the time to be there. Still, we’ve got to be a defense that can get there sending 4, blitzing, and shutting down pass concepts giving our guys as much time as possible to break the LOS and get to the QB.

Been trying to tell some of you fools since we drafted Dean that he is going
To be really good! He is living up to expectations!
Some folks on this site seem to rip our secondary as a right of passage !

  20. August 1976 Buc Says:

Brandon, lol lol Throw out window dressing stats. YES, Dean is talented, but that does not mean QBs really care about that. Dean has played scared for years. Bowles came here in 2019 with press-man coverage but it morphed into this lay-back crap, what happened to Press Man coverage?????? It is the mentality of Dean and Davis, and Dean more than Davis plays scared. Pressman is not what they play, but instead, they line up and surrender first downs because the DBs are so far back including and especially Dean. Giving up first gst downs just by how you set up is SCARED COVERAGE, SCARED. They line up so far back it reminds me of the ghost of Mike Smith and his pathetic Scared coverage scheme. This Secondary has not played that great for a very long time, excluding the 2020 Super Bowl run. Tape does not lie, sorry the secondary scares no one. It is about winning games, stats mean a hill of beans if you cannot stop somebody and you get beat.
In the very last game played last year, Dallas went through the Defense like they were Swiss cheese. No stat BLAH BLAH is going to change what happened. All those stats meant nothing on the field of play and Dallas put a beatdown on the Bucs in the last game played last season.
