So, About Those Tom Brady Rumors…

May 13th, 2023

Post-football plans change?

Joe is going to guess that every Bucs fan who wasn’t hibernating yesterday learned that former Bucs quarterback Tom Brady is deep into talks about buying a piece of the Las Vegas Raiders.

For Joe, this is not surprising. Brady was on the fast track to buy a piece of the Miami Dolphins until self-absorbed Brian Flores got in the way. Thankfully, Flores pretty much drove Brady into the open arms of Bucco Bruce Arians.

So it was clear that if Brady wanted to stay involved in the NFL, his goal was to someday own a piece of a team.

This also brings to mind how Brady tried a misdirection run last week. Respected media reporter Andrew Marchand of the New York Post, on his podcast, suggested folks he has spoken to in the network broadcast industry more and more get the impression Brady will never work for FOX as an NFL game analyst.

Brady signed a $375 million contract with FOX last year to become an analyst on FOX NFL broadcasts. He already said he is taking this year off and thus, has pushed his start date with FOX back to September 2024. Allegedly.

Brady responded on social media to Marchand’s intel as “fake news.” But was it fake?

With the news yesterday that Brady likely will own a piece of the Raiders, pending NFL owners approval, you can take it to the bank that part of the requirement from NFL owners to rubber stamp this sale is that the owners demand Brady give up his future FOX gig in the broadcast booth.

Why would they do that? You think, for example, Chiefs owner Gracie Clark Hunt wants Brady sniffing around the Chiefs facility watching closed practices, which is common for network broadcasters, and sitting down with Andy Reid and Pat Mahomes to pick their brains in production meetings?

Would anyone believe that Brady wouldn’t immediately share his intel with his buddy, Raiders coach Josh McDaniels?

Talk about a conflict of interest!

And with conferences no longer wedded to FOX or CBS, Joe is going to guess whoever is working on the No. 1 NFL broadcast team for FOX will be calling quite a few Chiefs games (and Chargers games, too) in the coming years.

Yes, the Chiefs and Chargers (and Broncos) are in the AFC West with the Raiders.

Imagine perpetually irked Broncos coach Sean Payton sitting down with Raiders’ part-owner Brady as Brady tries to get under the hood about the state of the Broncos? Payton would have a s(p)it fit.

So if this ownership transaction does go through for Brady, Joe is confident Brady’s broadcasting career will vanish before it ever started.

This is just too much for me to process right now….I’m sorry….*sigh*

  2. Lovelorn For Brady Says:

As long as Brady is happy then I’m happy

  3. sasquatch Says:

Maybe we can avoid having this be a topic on a BUCS fan site. Don’t care, don’t wanna hear about him, we’ve moved on. He has no allegiance to Tampa or the Buccaneers, so I have no interest in him.

  4. NebBuc Says:

Team Glazer should’ve offered it to him last year.

  5. Delusional Intelligence Says:

Brady Fatigue. It is real. I have the symptoms.

  6. steele Says:

This is all amusing but of no relevance.

Also amusing and of little relevance is that the Patriots will give Brady a celebration (which he will attend) and possibly retire his jersey.

Spin that any way you like.

  7. Bucschamp Says:

    Don’t care lol

  8. DoooshLaRue Says:

The Goat is out to pasture.

  9. FortMyersDave Says:

Joe, what stops these announcers from sharing intel with their coaching buddies in the first place? Is it just a gentleman’s agreement? Leaks are common place in the NFL concerning privileged info so are we to believe that the people associated with the various broadcasts do not have a hand in these tidbits of info making it onto the wire?????? Such people could also become friends with certain individuals in Vegas as well.

  10. Joe Says:

what stops these announcers from sharing intel with their coaching buddies

There is always that but you have to admit that a minority owner of another team at closed practices and in private production meetings is pretty over the top conflict of interest.

  11. mg Says:

Hand job bob should haver offered him ownership a decade ago.

  12. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I wish it was the Bucs. Surprised it’s not the Patriots.

And yes, some of us like hearing what he’s up to.

  13. Todd Says:

Tommy still banging that hot chick?

    Let’s get the REAL news!!!

  14. Hoopstar82 Says:

The nfl already said he can do both

  15. Chris K Says:

Why the Glazers wouldn’t offer Brady a piece of the Bucs I can not understand.

  16. Bucsfan13 Says:

Seth Wickersham wrote in the piece how Brady would be allowed to call games and be a limited owner. I believe he fully intends to call games. Marchand said that the Brady had every right to call the story floating around “fake news.” Brady’s business dealings are his dealings, and his business.

  17. Duane Says:

Being a minority owner of an NFL franchise may be a good investment, but it’s a terrible way to “stay involved in the NFL”. As minority owner, you control nothing, decide nothing … all you get to do is hang around that one single team, as no others will let you delve into whatever they don’t want going to the competition.

As wealthy as Brady may be, he’s not a 20 something billionaire capable of buying the whole team and thus getting to call the shots, with each franchise worth at least several billion.

If TB-12 truly wants to stay involved with the NFL, the Fox broadcast gig is as good as it gets, second only to the commissioner’s job which is not open at the moment.

  18. garro Says:

Rather he be an owner than another boring broadcaster.

  19. Letsbucinggo Says:

You can be a minority owner and still get a promotion to president or vice president answering only to the majority owner. Jason Licht is the GM and doesn’t own squat. The Glazers only want Glazers as owners.

  20. Cobraboy Says:

    Why should normal people care?

  21. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Brady Derangement Syndrome (BDS) hard at work.

  22. Old School Nole Says:

Brady is the G.O.A.T. and a Bucs legend. Anything he does is newsworthy on this site and I will read it. (And so will everyone bitching about it).

I actually think Joe is fairly restrained when it comes to the number of Brady stories.

  23. DBS Says:

Because normal people might care as much as we do about former Lightning players. You know like when Brooks or Sapp do things. Sorry you never rose to that level I guess.

  24. Buc4evr Says:

Don’t care, he seems to make unwise investments, like FTX.

  25. D-Rok Says:

Joe covers lots of stories involving ex-Bucs. Nothing wrong with a Brady story because he is an ex-Buc, and it involves a current NFL storyline.

  26. SOEbuc Says:

No, and I don’t care- Lloyd Christmas

The only thing I think about Brady is how he came in first year Covid 2020 to lead us to the most historic Super Bowl all time. Greatly appreciated GOAT. BUT don’t care about his business deals with other teams.

  27. ChiBuc Says:

Tbh, I don’t think anyone would enjoy listening to Brady’s boring, opinionless, droning cliche filled banter as a color analyst anyway. But I would enjoy watching him and LV ownership in an octagon pummeling each other for a majority share.

  28. Vgb Says:

Sooooo since Brady already got foxes approval…And Brady already inked deal and as brady said ” I don’t put my name on contracts and not honor them “…and considering Brady would be a limited minority owner meaning he will NOT ACTIVELY TAKE PART IN ANY NEGOTIATIONS OR DECISIONS OF THE TEAM…hell I am still thinking he is going to play quarterback…..

  29. unbelievable Says:

This might be the first time I’ve ever seen “respected reporter” and “The New York Post” in the same sentence together…

    😂😂

  30. Goatfarmer Says:

Tom knows that an investment in the Bucs now would be a bad investment in the short term, as the Bloweszo train wreck will cause a steep devaluation in franchise value.

Cover Zero, Copper Kupp! Yeah, Nonnie’s to cover a team’s best receiver at all. Especially after the most heroic comeback in Bucs history. Toad the idjit.

Maybe when Bloweszo secures his 9th loss of the season is when the Glazers should offer him a stake in the team.

  31. Goatfarmer Says:

    No one not nonnie

  32. stpetebucfan Says:

Gambling has EXPLODED since the perfection of smart phones able to process the bets safely. The global online gambling market size was valued at USD 63.53 billion in 2022 and is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11.7% from 2023 to 2030.

So indeed Joe is correct when he worries about conflict of interest. Not that Brady needs the money but lets be honest guys! I’m the son of a bookie. I like legal gambling even though I rarely partake I’d like to have the opportunity.

Having said that 65 BILLION soon to be 100 BILLION represents a LOT of money. Do we really believe that won’t present some REAL problems for the NFL in terms of keeping tabs on their players?

The good news is that just under 1700 players make up the entire roster of NFL players. Of those 1700 how many could really shave points. Obviously the skill players..perhaps the truly great defensive players like Aaron Donald…bottom line is that the NFL is filthy rich so perhaps they’ve got enough bucks to spy on the several hundred players with the ability to influence games.

I want to know private eyes are monitoring every move made by kickers!!!

I guess I’m too old and remember point shaving scandals in the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s and of course Tulane in the 80’s. The other saving feature is that these were all basketball scandals…only five players on the court..a few make a huge difference. Other than a QB, WR, RB I’m not sure how many it would take to actually tilt a game. Remember though we’re not talking about LOSING a game on purpose…we’re talking about simply beating the line.

I’m the positive pollyanna around here but really…human nature being what it is…more than 65 BILLION…the entire NFL takes in around 20 BILLION…the more this gambling explodes the more a bad call or stupid play might start generating suspicion!

  33. Perimeter Blocker Says:

I don’t understand why the Glazer’s would offer part ownership here. It is never a bad move to have the greatest ever a part of your organization permanently.

  34. Bubby Says:

Self absorbed Brian Flores! You’re a clown, Joe.

  35. Allbuccedup Says:

There are so many Glazers in the front office it makes one wonder if there is rabbit blood in their DNA.

  36. Fred McNeil Says:

I’ve always believed gambling will ruin the NFL.
The goons don’t need to bribe players. The refs make a lot less and can be bought off or threatened much more easily. Plus, there’s always a few Art Shliesters out there. I’d bet my seeester on Shliester!

  37. Larrd Says:

    What is Giselle up to?

  38. View from 132 Says:

I’m done with all Brady news. He had a good run here. Just another retired player now…. Move on.

  39. adam from ny Says:

brady will most likely shift gears…

and go play for the raiders…

    that’s what all this means…

it means he is in biz with the raiders…

now it just has to come to fruition…

he’s going to suit up for the silver and black

  40. adam from ny Says:

he didn’t divorce wifey to just retire himself…

they divorced so said dude can play more football

  41. TOMMY MORDUE Says:

I AGREE JOE..IT’S A TOTAL “CONFLICT OF INTEREST” HE WON’T BE DOING ANY COMMENTING IN THE BOOTH IF HE BUY’S OWNERSHIP IN THE RAIDERS..LOVE YOU TOM, BUT IT WON’T WORK..YOU SHOULD HAVE BOUGHT INTO THE BUC’S IF YOU PLANNED TO DO SOMETHING LIKE THAT ANYWAY & THE GLAZERS WERE FOOLISH NOT TO SUGGEST IT IN THE FIRST PLACE..

  42. TOMMY MORDUE Says:

I ALSO FEEL YOU WOULD BE A BENEDICT ARNOLD TYPE IF YOU GAVE IN ROBERT KRAFT & SIGNED A ONE DAY CONTRACT TO RETIRE AS A PATRIOT ! ( THEY GAVE UP ON YOU !, INSTEAD OF MAKING YOU A RESTRICTED FREE AGENT, THEY ALLOWED YOU AN EASY WAY OUT ! ) BRUCE ARIANS & JASON LIGHT & THE GLAZERS PURSUED YOU & GOT YOU & YOU CHANGED THE CULTURE IN TAMPA BAY ! YOU MADE THE WHOLE TEAM AUTOMATICALLY BELIEVE IN THEMSELVES & TOOK US TO THE SUPER BOWL & WON IT ! YOUR VERY 1ST YEAR ! WON BACK TO BACK DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIPS FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE TEAMS HISTORY..YOU BELONG IN OUR “RING OF HONOR” WITH YOUR #12 JERSEY RETIRED ! RETIRE A BUCCANEER “TOM BRADY” – “THE GREATEST QUARTERBACK OUR FRANCHISE EVER HAD ! (AND THE “GOAT” AS WELL ! )

  43. Oneilbuc Says:

Tommy. Brady will always be known as a Patriot regardless how you feel about it. And I respect Tom Brady as a Patriot just like Sapp played for the Raiders but he’s know as buc. They didn’t give up on Tom Brady it was time for them to move on from Brady just like the 49ers and Joe Montana. Some of y’all kill me how disrespectful you be with the players that was drafted by the bucs and was developed by the bucs like Gerald McCoy who played 9 years with us . But than want to beg Tom Brady to retire a buc after the way he done the team last year. He showed you he’s a Patriot by going to Robert Kraft wedding a day before the game. He didn’t fly with the team to the game or fly back with the team from the game . He also left training camp for 11 days and yet y’all still gave him a pass. He’s Patriot more than a buc and I’m ok with that . The Patriots drafted him and develop him when he got passed up by 6 times by 31 other teams including the bucs. Get over it he will never be considered a buc more than a Patriot just like Payton Manning and the Colts.
