Ross Tucker Ranks Todd Bowles

May 26th, 2023

Bucs coach Todd Bowles.

Joe wonders if Team Glazer will consider giving Bucs coach Todd Bowles a mulligan for last year?

We all know Bowles was hired late in the 2022 hiring period. Very late in March. So late, he didn’t get much of a chance to hire his own assistant coaches. The Bucs, while they won the division, had a losing record at 8-10.

The reason Joe brings this up is  only once has Team Glazer retained a coach who had two consecutive losing seasons. That man’s name is Chucky. And he got Team Glazer a Super Bowl ring.

It’s list season, the time of the year when teams are close to hibernating for roughly 6-7 weeks after minicamp and before training camps open. That’s the time of the year when seemingly everyone working in #NFLMedia publishes lists of some sort.

Some are getting a head start, including former NFL offensive lineman and current multimedia star Ross Tucker. Typing for The33rdTeam.com, Tucker posted rankings of NFL coaches.

Despite Bowles getting the Bucs to the playoffs, Tucker ranks Bowles as the No. 26 coach in the NFL.

26. Todd Bowles, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Seasons With Team: 1 | Head Coaching Record: 34-50

Analysis: Other than a fun Fitzmagic-led 2015 season for the Jets, Bowles’ head coaching track record isn’t good. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers limping to an 8-9 record in Tom Brady’s last season doesn’t exactly inspire confidence, either. Neither does the quarterback “battle” between Baker Mayfield and Kyle Trask.

Joe is hopeful Baker Mayfield surprises folks. He’s a good, inexpensive gamble, not just for this season but for the future.

Still, if Bowles and the Bucs don’t have a winning season, that will make five straight losing seasons for Bowles. Very few coaches in the Super Bowl era survive five straight losing seasons. That’s Ray Perkins territory (he too had five straight losing seasons, four with the Bucs).

The last coach to have five straight losing seasons and keep his job was Dixie Chicks coach Marion Campbell. who last co,ched in 1989. He actually had six consecutive losing seasons. His career mark was 34-80-1 and he never had a winning season.

Todd turns it around and builds a empire.

  2. Asdf Says:

I hope I’m wrong and he turns it around but the guys coaches scared. I have a feeling we’re looking for a new coach next year

  3. Tye Says:

More like he ranks in the mid 30s!

    Ranking wanking. Don’t care.

Another day …Another dollar …I been up …I been down …I been in between …I been living dreams …..keep it moving Coach !!

  6. HC Grover Says:

Once he starts losing it will cascade in to a debacle. Blunder upon blunder.

Hang tough Joe. There really is a QB battle going on between your chosen one & some other guy named Kyle Trask (or something like that), but don’t let that deter you.

Bucs are a team in transition (aka, rebuilding), and there’s COMPETITION for a LOT of starting jobs right now, not just QB. The key to this season (and their retention) will be how well this coaching staff TEACHES and EVALUATES. Todd has HIS coaching staff right now. I’m rooting for the Bucs (and thus Todd) to succeed, but whether or not he remains the coach in 2024 has to be performance-based. The Glazers are the only ones who will determine that, not any of us.

  8. Bobby M. Says:

Canales will be our next HC….especially if we’re developing a young QB. Bowles is lame in every way, he brings no juice or emotion, no bravado, plays to not lose, has zero credibility with that record as a HC. He’s simply not good enough to lead a team. Should stick to DC.

  9. Voice of Truth Says:

Seems about right – definitely bottom tier

    6 wins max with Todd

  10. Letsbucinggo Says:

Can’t believe hes a head coach.

  11. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Tucker being generous.

  12. MX buc fan Says:

He has been solid in terms of defense (at this point i think he is a top DC) but the other side is always the problem with him, i really think that he found that answer in the new OC, it will be a very interesting season but the ceiling is high for this team.

  13. ocala Says:

Baker Mayfield has the worst QB rating in the NFL over the last two years. Seems unlikely he become a good NFL QB.

  14. Bucsfan13 Says:

Canales has never even called a play in the NFL!!
Stop acting like this guy is the next Bill Walsh. I know Leftwich had his issues, but slow your roll on Canales. Some are already crowning him

  15. RuKa Says:

When will we stop using the “he couldn’t chose his coaches” excuse?
Those coaches that he couldn’t chose brought us a SB and they were all working on the side of the ball the Bowles swears he doesn’t interfere with…

Will we stop it if his handpicked offensive coaches don’t deliver a winning season?

  16. HC Grover Says:

Bowles is ranked #1 of HC/DC’s he is the only coach able to do the double job. No other team is dumb enough to try it,

  17. Allbuccedup Says:

This upper management thinks this guy is going is going to put a competitive team on the field. If the Glazers are that shallow they will get what they deserve.

  18. BA’s Red Pen Says:

Bowles isn’t my favorite coach, but I don’t think he’s any worse than the other coaches in the division so to me it’s a wash. Dennis Allen flat out sucks, Artie Smith wants to run the wishbone and I seriously don’t even know who is the Panthers HC. The Bucs will be a .500 team this season. Unless they decide to “Tank with Trask,” that is.

  19. Doc Says:

The first person to be fired need to be the G.M.

  20. Joe Says:

When will we stop using the “he couldn’t chose his coaches” excuse?

Not an excuse. It’s a very valid issue.

  21. Brandon Says:

The Bucs will surprise quite a few next season, even their own alleged fans. Bowles didn’t make great decisions throughout the season, particularly on when to go for it or kick a field goal… other than that, he went .500 (the Falcons game was a forfeit) despite being handicapped by a QB that played like he didn’t want to be here and refused to challenge defenses with his arm. That offense was perhaps the worst in the league (when considering that the D got them the ball back often) and was among the worst in putting points on the board. We can blame Leftwich all we want, but the truth is that Brady was the one pulling the trigger, the one that received 100% of the credit when the offense was good (even in 2019 it seems) but when they sucked it was everyone’s fault but his. Under the guidance of Canales and Mayfield, if the offense gets into the middle of the pack, this team will contend for the division title. The defense is improved, the special teams might be a little bit better, pair that with an offense that isn’t one of the worst in the league, and team success is usually the result.

  22. WillieG Says:

If I was the owner, I wouldn’t give a mulligan for a guy who said “We liked our chances in overtime” and kept timeouts in his pocket with Brady as QB.

I’d say “I like my chances with a different coach”.

It’s one thing to lose. It’s an entirely different thing to lose while playing safe (scared) with the GOAT at QB.

  23. Craig Says:

If he keeps his fingers out of the offensive pie he might do better.

He doesn’t understand offense and should stick to what he knows, which is being a decent DC.

  24. Fred McNeil Says:

@Willie G, that “mistake by the lake” stuck in my craw too. That borched “zero blitz” was another.
It’s a new year and we’re stuck with what we’ve got. I can only hope he’s learned from his abject failures and does better this season.
He’s not really stupid so maybe there’s a chance. Go Bucs.

  25. FrontFour Says:

Bowles will get a mulligan from Glazers for last season. It was all about Brady and it was a dumpster fire. They should have kept BA one more season to ride out the string. It just proved all those offense guys were nothing without him. And Bowles got stuck with an old, slow roster. He played it smart and tanked the last game at ATL. If he was going for a winning record he plays the starters to the end.

  26. mark2001 Says:

I think Bowles did get a mulligan for last season. Sure, won the title in the worst division in football. But we got rolled by Dallas to end the season. And had a lousy record. But if we don’t show some real improvement this year, I believe he is sent packing.
