Rob Gronkowski: Baker Mayfield Could Lead Bucs To Playoffs

May 17th, 2023

Talking Bucs.

But Gronk forgot to say Kyle Trask is competing!

Earlier today, former Bucs tight end foot-rubbing Rob Gronkowski, hopped on Kay Adams’s show “Up and Adams” and discussed the Bucs’ open quarterback gig.

Well, in Gronk’s mind, the gig is not open. It’s Baker Mayfield’s to lose. That’s basically what Trask’s former teammate, Gronk, told Adams.

“I think Baker will win the quarterback position,” Gronk said confidently. “I think he will be the starting quarterback for the Tampa Bay Bucs going into the season.

“The only way I can see the Bucs pulling him is if he just absolutely plays horrendous, which I don’t think he will.”

Part of Gronk’s confidence in Mayfield is Gronk thinks Trask will push Mayfield to be his best self. In the end, it’s Mayfield, Gronk said.

“Baker just needs to be the Baker that he was with the Rams,” Gronk said. “He just doesn’t need to be a hero.”

Mayfield has a lot of talent around him to be successful, Gronk said as he cited Chris Godwin and Mike Evans. Also, Gronk noted he’s confident the Bucs are crafting an offense around Mayfield to highlight his strengths and not trying to shoehorn Mayfield into a particular scheme.

If Mayfield does that, trusts his teammates to make plays, the Bucs will be in the playoffs, Gronk said.

If Gronk is right about one of his last points that the Bucs are building an offense around Mayfield — and it seems to be the case per Bucs types talking on the record — then that’s just smart football.

You can see the full clip of Gronk talking about Mayfield with Adams in the FanDuelTV video below.

  1. Rod Munch Says:

So basically Gronk knows what he saw while he was here, and he knows what Tom Brady was telling him last year, and he thinks there’s zero chance in hell that Trask will ever see a snap.

Sounds like what you hear from people who are around the team and see practices and talk to players off the record.

  2. D-Rok Says:

I would consider Gronk’s opinion to be the most credible I’ve heard to date. After all, we know coach-speak borders on smoke and mirrors, and Gronk has no reason to sugar-coat anything. He’s free to speak freely.

  3. anderson Fa Gonzalez Says:

is derek carr really that much better than baker mayfield?? I honestly believe the bucs have the 2nd best Qb in the division.

  4. HC Grover Says:

Gronk knows something about Trask and it aint good.

  5. DingleBerry Says:

Absolutely love Gronk, best Tight of all time and he understand the game a lot better than most people would think.

But he’s taken 1 too many hits to the noggin if he thinks that Baker can get this team to the playoffs just by playing like he did when he was with the Rams.

170 yards, less than a touchdown, and half an interception per game is not going to cut it in any division.

  6. Pewter Power Says:

I don’t think he forgot Kyle Trask. He also has seen him in practice and obviously thinks baker is better. Trask is on track to be the next Ryan griffin if he doesn’t show big improvements. I just wanna see that even if he doesn’t start

  7. PSL Bob Says:

So, who cares what Gronk has to say? Not when he’s on with Kay Adams. Man, she looks smokin’ hot in that outfit and hairdo.

  8. Just Leave Trask Alone Says:

Hooray 190 ypg here we come.

  9. Fansince76 Says:

Really good insight from Gronk, it does seem Baker is our starting QB.
If he can keep the turnovers down Bucs should be in the mix.

  10. Joe Swanson Says:

If all this is true why is Trask still on the team.

  11. Joe in Michigan Says:

I agree, I think Mayfield wins the job, and the Bucs could make the playoffs if things fall right for them.

  12. CrackWise Says:

Doubt Gronk ever IN HIS CAREER practiced with the 3rd stringers.

Also DOUBT Gronk has EVER scouted QBs for any reason, let alone an honest take on who the Bucs next QB will be.

All in all, everyone knows Kyle is the backup plan this year. Which is a shame because TRASK is pure CLASS!!! and has a higher ceiling then Baker.

  13. Duane Says:

Nobody knows anything until at least the preseason games are in the book. Gronk may be right, but he has not seen Baker Mayfield in practice.

There is a humongous list of professionals – coaches, scouts, and probably players too – who underestimated Kyle Trask – that’s been his career signature.

Always way better to perform above expectations, rather than below them.

I wish both players success, because the success of the Bucs season is going to depend upon it. And again, as I’ve said repeatedly, no matter who wins the starting position, there is an even chance they won’t suit up for all 17 games and then some due to injury. Including Baker Mayfield, who lost his job at Cleveland due to his shoulder injury.

  14. CrackWise Says:

Side Note: Gronk is no fun/good when he tries to be professional analyst. He needs make a career saving change now and stick to color commentary IMHO.

  15. BBQBUC Says:

Midget Mayfield has an undeniably dubious past.

So, given Midget’s past, if Kyle Trask is as bad as this FSU website constantly insinuates, why did the Bucs pass on Will Levis AND Hendon Hooker in the first round of the draft, pass on Hendon Hooker AGAIN in the second round, and not draft ANY quarterback whatsoever in ANY round? Doesn’t make any sense. The Bucs would have snagged a quarterback to back up Midget when he fails.

It’s obvious from how the Bucs drafted that the Bucs are quite comfortable with Trask. Their actions speak louder than anyone’s words. Even those of online guys whose quarterback credentials include being bigly cheerleaders for Johnny Manziel and Jameis Winston.

  16. BBQBUC Says:

Joe Swanson Says: “If all this is true why is Trask still on the team?”

Because the pros inside One Buc Palace don’t pay attention to what FSU websites say. If they did, Trask would have been cut before he got measured for his Bucs helmet.

  17. Guzzie55 Says:

Honestly in the NFC Hurts Prescott Stafford are top 3, then Kyler is probably 4th when healthy then Geno, Danny Dime, Cousins, Carr are next tier, good Baker would probably be the next best potentially, but we get Caleb or Drake, or hit on one of the other 1st RD QBs, you’re looking at being top 5, can’t believe how stacked the AFC is at QB

  18. BBQBUC Says:

With 62% of first-round quarterbacks NOT getting a second contract with their team – in other words a 62% first-round bust rate for quarterbacks – it amazes me how so may Bucs fans put faith in getting that special franchise quarterback in the first round of the draft. Did they learn nothing from Jameis? LOL

  19. BA’s Red Pen Says:

The occult of Trask DOES NOT approve this message!

  20. Oxycondoms Says:

Am curious to see who will win the backup qb position just for laughs

  21. David Says:

Gronk is no analyst nor could he play without Tom Brady. How would he show vote of confidence on Baker and downing Trask without even see him in a meaningful game.
Baker, Six years in NFL with his fourth team. Yeah that is a super bowl recipe to success. Maybe Gronk has some inside scope that there will be no real competition to begin with knowing Todd love for Baker. Gronk needs to keep his daytime job laying around the beaches doing nothing than worry about the Bucs who couldn’t even get out of the first round of playoffs with Brady let alone the failed qb called Baker.

  22. Mike Johnson Says:

Gronk probably said that either during or right after one of his all night parties. All I gotta say is Show us Baker.

  23. Beej Says:

Trask will get some opportunities to play even if he’s second string, because Mayfield has been hurt in every single season as far as I know

  24. BigJim Says:

Baker the Faker knows its a now or ever kinda deal, The Faker should put up good numbers this season with getting the Buc’s in playoffs, but no matter even if The Faker has a 5000 yard season, he’ll still be on a short lease, the best future contract The Faker might ever get will only be after a few solid years of play, and then the Buc’s still might move on,

  25. JD Still Says:

Well that’s Gronk’s opinion, the opinions I value are those who actually have money in the game, so I value the opinion of the Cleveland Browns ownership and management, I value the opinions of the Carolina Panthers ownership and management, and I value the opinion of the Los Angeles Rams ownership and management all of whom had millions of dollars invested in Baker Mayfield and his ability to get them to the Super Bowl Promised Land but in the end decided to cut their losses and look elsewhere , money talks and BS walks, and we all know how those stories ended.

  26. Brazen Zebra Says:

    Go Bucs! Shake & Bake!!

  27. SOEbuc Says:

    Anderson FA gonzalez

NO! He’s not. Carr is career 142 GP all for Raiders and he is 63-79. The most career wins he has had in a season is 12. Baker is 33-39 with less games played on sh!t for show teams. Only an IDIOT would give up $40M for Carr to lead them to the promise land.

  28. SlyPirate Says:

LOOK AT NFCS QBs … Carr, Ridder, Rookie, Mayfield

You can’t say any one of these guys are heads and shoulders above the rest. If you had to pick one of them, Mayfield (at $8M) looks like the best of the bunch.

  29. EEK Says:

    I love the opinion

It’s just those 1-2 stupid plays a game that Baker has to avoid and with the playmakers staying healthy this team can win some games….

That is walking on very thin ice though

  30. All_da_way Says:

Gronk is correct. Trask can change that by competing.

  31. Cobraboy Says:

@Just Keave: I will take 190ypg passing if the team can grind 135ypg on the ground.

  32. Tiny Dungy Says:

Maybe Gronk got a call and knows that Brady will be back before game #1..

  33. BigJim Says:

I wouldnt expect to see Baker the Faker long term with the Bucs, Fact is Bucs are fishing for the 2024 or 25 QB draft, and Buc’s know The Faker might get them thru with a 2023 playoff spot, Baker might even fake his way thru a 2024 season playoff finish with the Bucs too, there is no better Faker than Baker the Faker

    ^^^^^^^
Why do you call him “Baker the Faker”, other than because it rhymes?

  35. Usfbuc Says:

Well nothing really new here. Many have been saying for a while now that Trask never really had a chance to play while Tom was here (nice to have that confirmed). Also there will be a competition but that the job will essentially be handed to Baker unless he is terrible which anyone with two brain cells knew was true as soon as they signed Baker.

  36. Jeremy Says:

Most of you guys are just D I c KS. How would you like those gay little nicknames your giving BM. It seems pretty obvious that KT is a bust or he would have a lot more snaps than he does. There sure is some good receivers for someone to throw to. Hopefully we got our s h it together this year

  37. unbelievable Says:

I think all the “Gronk knows what Trask is” talk is kinda BS…

Let’s be honest: how many passes do you think Trask has ever even thrown to Gronk?

I’d be shocked if that number was higher than 3. I mean Trask was the 3rd stringer, and Gronk wasn’t even here last season.

  38. Capt.Tim Says:

    Lmao
All the guys setting their wide load butts on the couch, thinking they know more about Trask than a guy who practiced with him every day.
Not to mention how bad Trask looked in the preseason.
Gronk saw him every day in practice, plus talked to the main man in the QB room, every single day!

What do you guys know about him? He played for your favorite college??
Trask is terrible. He has a noodle arm. I said it the day he was drafted, that he was a wasted pick.
And its still true. Hes only on the roster- because the Bucs dont want to admit they blew a second round pick.
