Report: Bucs Could Get Shut Out Of A National TV Game

May 8th, 2023

Primetime blackout in 2023?

This really is no surprise if you think about it.

Quarterbacks sell the NFL, which is an entertainment business. The NFL world as a whole simply isn’t energized by the idea of sitting down for an evening of escapism to watch Kyler Traskfield.

(Ask an NFL fan from, say, Oregon or Wyoming or Mississippi, if he/she wants to make time to watch Traskfield, the response is likely, “Isn’t there a rerun of ‘Guy’s Grocery Games’ on?”)

Thus, the guys in charge of selling football to America (NFL suits, TV network producers, ad execs and Jeff Bezos) don’t love the idea of pushing Traskfield on an unwilling audience.

And the Bucs could get completely erased from the night-game schedule this season, writes Mother Jones-reading,  airport-pianist-listening, Twitter-revolting, Purdue-basketball-confused, combine-fatigued, Bavarian-pretzel-chomping, teeth-brushing, haircut-fascinated, Circa-bewildered, elf-rattled, green-lawns-frowning, soggy-socks-wearing, Daylight-Savings-Time-scared, crossword-puzzle-puzzled, Elon-Musk-peeved, Barstool-Sports-triggered, almond-milk-sipping, hot-dog-eating-contest-protesting, mock-draft-scowlingL.L.-Bean-wearing, tennis fans’ advocate, Second Amendment abolitionistMike-Florio-arguingparrot-insensitivechewing-with-his-mouth-opensoup-gulpingCalifornia-train-romancing, anti-football proliferationouthouse-admiringairline-nappingsteerage-flyingYogi Berra-worshipingurinal-picture-takingvideo-game-playingTaylor-Swift-listeningpickpocket-thwartingBucs-uniform-frowning, Allie LaForce-smitten, Big-Ten-Network-hatingpedestrian-bumpingolive oil-lappingpopcorn-munchingcoffee-slurpingfried-chicken-eatingoatmeal-lovingcircle-jerking, craft-beer-chugging, cricket-watchingscone-loathingcollege football-naïvebaseball-box-score-readingNPR-honkfilthy-hotel-stayingfight-instigatingbarista-training, Budweiser-tolerantbaseball-scorecard-keeping, pasta-feasting, vomit-dodging scrooge, Kay-Adams-following, Coors-Light-souring, pineapple-upside-down-cake-eating social activist and NFL insider Peter King of NBC Sports fame.

But now that the league passed a rule in March allowing teams to play short-week Thursday games twice instead of once, that could empower the league to eliminate some of the teams that look like bad ones from prime time in favor of maxing out some teams with two Thursday games. So Arizona might be left out this year, and maybe Tampa Bay or Houston.

First, Joe would be shocked if the Texans aren’t on Thursday Night Football. This is where King’s college football naivete shows through.

Network producers and suits care about one thing and one thing only: eyeballs. Period. So you start with Houston, which is a top-10 TV market, and then you throw in Ohio State’s massive national fanbase.

You don’t have to be a fan of the Buckeyes (and Joe isn’t) to know hundreds of thousands or more will tune in solely to watch rookie Texas quarterback C.J. Stroud, the ex-Buckeyes star. There is a reason the B1G begins a $7 billion TV contract this fall with FOX showing damn near every Ohio State home game at noon. It ain’t because no one is watching.

So unless the Baker Mayfield Project succeeds — possible — the Bucs are between quarterbacks. And in the NFL world, that’s basically the equivalent of Stewart McClown as the face of your franchise.

The NFL, TV networks and general fans of the game might basically tell the Bucs, “Wake me when you draft your new franchise quarterback.”

screw Peter “I know everything” King

  2. SufferingSince76 Says:

As long as we still get the games here, I am unconcerned about the Bucs being seen nationally.

  3. HA-HA-HA Says:

King uses weasel words. The Bucs will be on a prime time because it’s an NFL rule. Probably stuck on a Thursday night football or most likely Monday night. But they will be on a game at night and most likely it will be an away game.

  4. ModHairKen Says:

Why would they deserve national TV? A playoff team with a losing record? Boring coach. Hand me down QB. Vanilla personalities.

    This team is uninteresting.

  5. Pewter Power Says:

Yea they won’t but even if they did so what. They’ll get their one game but I don’t want my team playing two short week games. Players hate it and it’s sometimes a disadvantage depending on the opponent schedule.

  6. Lt. Dan Says:

On a selfish note…I hope the Bucs don’t get a prime time game. I HATE the late games.

  7. FortMyersDave Says:

I am with Lt Dan, all the games should be Sunday at 1 PM. Without Brady the Bucs tend to grab their ankles on prime time games anyways, especially with Coach Bowels.

  8. Da Bucs Guy Says:

If you like 1pm games on Sunday, Todd Bolwes is the coach for you.

  9. TheBucsAnthem Says:

That fine with me………cause they don’t deserve it.

Besides……..I got better things to do with my Sundays than to see them lose every weekend

  10. TampaBayBucsFanSince1976 Says:

Pure speculation and schedules can change midseason.

  11. Mike C Says:

Then why are you on this web site Bucsanthem? If you have time to B/tch and cry about how terrible they will be on a Monday morning, I seriously doubt you have anything better going on in your life on Sunday.

  12. SB~LV Says:

    The NFL Mercy Rule
    Folks it’s gonna be ugly
    Run
    ME
    Run !

  13. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Who cares?
This is about as important as our schedule to me?

    Play the game.
    Win.

  14. BucsFan81 Says:

Back to being the Yucs and all 1pm games on a Sunday. I doubt we even get any 4pm games. It’s ok because we have pretty much sucked at night games anyways even when we had Brady.

  15. Bucsministerfuller Says:

    Thank The gods!
I hate staying up till midnight watching these games on an effin’ Thursday.
Give me all 1pm Sunday games.
I DVR them, start watching after half-time and fast forward thru all the commercials and replays.
Watch an entire game in about an hour and still finish at about 4.
It truly is the only way to watch a game.

  16. Obvious Says:

Personally I’m excited to FINALLY get Our franchise QB! I’d still rather play at 1pm on Sundays.

I guess I got used to that schedule and prefer that time.

(I didn’t realize it was because we Sucked Out Loud)

    Either way I prefer it….

  17. Alanbucsfan Says:

Bucs at Carolina will be a very entertaining game

  18. Irishmist Says:

I’m glad. No matter what the league says, I’m convinced that more injuries occur on the Thursday games. That’s when Shaq tore his Achilles. What’s going to hurt a lot more is that the refs will go back to screwing us over, because we won’t be such a cash cow for the owners.

  19. Stanglassman Says:

Win games and that will change.

  20. Beej Says:

Prime time games are a detriment –Mondays make short week, Thursdays make shorter week, even Sundays save northern teams from suffering the Florida middle-of-the-day heat

  21. DC Says:

Yea they will get 0 national tv games. At least kyler is exciting. I can’t name a more uninteresting team in the nfl then this one right here… Which sucks to say. Unles watching a qb who is on his 4th team in a calendar year or a qb who has thrown 9 passes in 3 years excites you then this is must watch tv!!

ON a sidenote… @joe how can the NFL be concerned about player safety but then force a team to play 2 of those ridiculous Thursday games. AWFUL what a crock. They should be getting rid of those games all together not adding another one to it. Or at least schedule every terrible thursday game of teams coming off of their bye. Shame on the NFL and their greedy OWNERS!

  22. Joe Says:

Or at least schedule every terrible thursday game of teams coming off of their bye. Shame on the NFL and their greedy OWNERS!

Please. Players (i.e. the football salary cap) get 50 cents on every dollar the NFL brings in revenue. Higher salary cap (which is based on revenue) means higher salaries for the players.

Players talk a good game about not wanting to play on Thursdays (some actually like it because they get a pseudo-bye week) but where were they when they could have blocked it in contract demands?

The players know good and well no Thursday games means a lower salary cap.

Greedy owners? How about greedy players? Or to simplify it, just plain greed.

  23. DJB Says:

I am OK with them getting shut out of nationally televised games, the Bucs have mostly embarrassed themselves in those games.

  24. gp Says:

Short weeks are hard on the players.
Personally, I can live without Thursday night football completely!

  25. Vlad The Impaler Says:

You forgot “Smug, entitled douchebag” in the PK preamble

  26. Destinjohnny Says:

That’s what happens when u have a crappy team

  27. Couch Fan Says:

No GOAT and the worst HC in the league, Bucs are destined for 1pm games and the basement of the NFC South once again.

  28. LOL Says:

Good. I dont like staying up late to watch terrible football. Last year was bad enough. LOL

  29. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Back to the 1pm 98 degree games where you can sweat out $18 beers in 5 minutes and watch doo doo buc ball

  30. Bosch Says:

Fine with me. Night games run way too late.

  31. Letsbucinggo Says:

The Bucs were relevant with Tom Brady. Now realty sets in, back to the Yucs. Top ten draft picks, wonder who the next head coach will be, is Jason Licht on the seat you know good times its a Bucs Life.

  32. reddington neck shores Says:

wasn’t long ago ie last 2y – that i saw tons of bucs swag on all kinds of folks up here in virginia. they were just fair weather fans but popular none the less. i’d be surprised to have zero games. jordan love doesn’t have many more reps and he just got extended. kyler murray had his team with a top record not long ago so this is silly.

  33. OrlandoBucFan Says:

Selfishly, I am happy with fewer or no prime time games. Night games are a bear to attend when you are driving from out of town. The 1:00 o’clock games get me home by 6:30 p.m., just in time for dinner.

  34. D-Rok Says:

When I was a lad, NFL football was simply played on Sundays. The Monday Night game took a while to catch on in popularity. Then they added Sun Nite games…OK. Then they added Thurs nite games…NAW.

Give me Sundays at 1pm, please – it’s what I grew up on and it’s easiest to schedule the rest of my life around. I think Thursday games are way too inconvenient.

I’m sure I/we will all get used to these newfangled times/days/flexes, but that doesn’t mean I have to endorse it or like it! I hate the flexes – they actually frustrate me, LOL.

  35. DoooshLaRue Says:

I’m relieved that I don’t have to hear about Tom Brady and his greatness (although well deserved) before every freaking game.
I tired of that buildup quickly.

  36. LJ'sDaddy Says:

I’m not hurt at all. I hate staying up late to usually lose and then try to go to work in the morning. I lie noon Sunday games the best!! I think we play better when no one expects us to. Under the radar…that’s where I like to be. GO BUCS!

  37. Lokog Says:

Ill be watching in pierated tv if devin white is still here

  38. miken Says:

Hard to blame the network. Bad team in worst division also playing the afc south. Back to Sundays at 1pm

  39. Topdoggie Says:

A hell yes from me. I hate late night games based on West coast time. Some of us have to start work before the sun comes up.

  40. Ed Says:

This will help the Bucs. They have had so many clunkers in MNF over the last couple of years. Even with Brady they were blasted in a couple of those games.

1PM is fine, the Bucs seem to play their best football at that time. The less fanfare, the better for them. They make too many mistakes in prime time games.

  41. Jerry Says:

Peter King ranks the Bucs 31 out of 32 teams.

  42. R.O. Says:

Texans v Panthers is perfect Thurs night fodder…

  43. Mark Says:

If Traskfield fizzles, the team will be borderline unwatchable.

Best case, Bucs are a pleasant surprise, flying under the radar.

Worst case, a horrific disaster, best hidden from sight (but hopefully building for a better future).

  44. Jvato24 Says:

I don’t get it, Baker Mayfield made for some of the most exciting games to end the year last season, Baker Mayfield is not boring, Jared Goff is more exciting?? Whomever the 49ers QB is more exciting?? Who’s the Commandos QB?? Desmond Ritter is more exciting?? Get out, this is bias based reporting, King has always looked down on Bucs

  45. View from 132 Says:

I’ll really miss listening to Chris Collinsworth.

    – No One, Ever.

  46. Jeff Says:

Great news! Sick of losing these evening games and going to bed pissed off.

  47. Bucamania Says:

Back to irrelevancy, unfortunately. Boring head coach and backup QB. What do you expect?

  48. Mike Says:

Totally fine with the Bucs not getting any night games. I prefer when they play at 1PM on Sundays actually.

  49. Gary Says:

Won’t surprise. Been a bucs fan my whole 40 year foot all life. It’s hard enough getting to watch games as is. So I will not be surprised if they don’t air it. These NFL folks are dumb. Just sell people anywhere whatever games they want. I love in PA, let me kay a premium to watch all bucs games. It’s not like that’s complicated.

  50. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Ed, you nailed it.

  51. Oneilbuc Says:

Who cares as long as I can watch my bucs on TV that’s all that matters!! I never liked or cared about prime time games. I loved the 3 o’clock games more than the prime time games.

  52. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Yeah Oh-Kneelz……

    Those 3 o’clock games are the shizz….
    😂

  53. BigMacAttack Says:

I think it’s great for the Bucs. They historically collapse in theses nattv night games, thx to Mr Chuckles the Clown before he got the bookk

  54. unbelievable Says:

    Thursday night games suck.

    Absolute garbage.

    F the league.

  55. Who Says Says Can't Say Says:

I don’t care about the Bucs “being relevant” or nationally recognized. Sure owners and media that cover them want that, but as a fan it’s not like I get a check in the mail because somebody in Wyoming now likes the Bucs. In fact, it actually makes ticket prices higher and harder to get.

And for me, it’s much easier to plan parties around the 1pm Sunday games, so national games in prime time or even 4pm games are a negative. That’s for me personally; your mileage may vary.

  56. Rod Munch Says:

If you don’t like Thursday night games, then don’t watch them. The games only air on Thursdays because a random meaningless game between Carolina and Atlanta will draw an audience that beats out the World Series or NBA Finals.

  57. stpetebucfan Says:

I do not care about publicity. I do care about the health and energy and time to prepare for the Bucs. The overseas games are obviously the worst, but Thursday night games can screw with routines even worse than MNF.

I’d love to see the Bucs play every Sunday at 1PM. Not going to happen obviously but the closer to a regular schedule that maximizes the players bioryhms the better.

  58. Infomeplease Says:

After last season I would be surprised to get one national game. Todd Bowles turned a highly entertaining team into a snooze fest!!! Even the players were yawning by half time. If that continues this season, he will be gone!

  59. Oneilbuc Says:

Dooshbag. Yes the where I live our games come on at 12 and 3 in case you didn’t know. Tampa time is 1 and 4 .

  60. Joe Says:

These NFL folks are dumb. Just sell people anywhere whatever games they want.

The NFL has done just that since 1994. It’s called “NFL Sunday Ticket.” Joe’s had it since 1996 and quite literally it’s the greatest invention man has crafted since the remote control.

  61. BucUup813 Says:

Some of you guys sounds like people who get a loan and whine about paying it back lol.

  62. firethecannons Says:

fine rather see an am game anyway

  63. Crickett Baker Says:

I don’t live in Tampa anymore, after about 40 years there and graduating from Plant High when we had a great team, etc. All I care about are 2 things. Being somehow able to watch Bucs games (which is never a given in Arkansas no matter what time they play) and watching MORE football which makes me love Thursday night games. So far I can’t afford that Sunday ticket, either.

  64. Bobby M. Says:

Texans have a new HC, rookie QB….there’s at least an element of optimism with that combo. Bucs have Bowles….who couldn’t win with the GOAT in a terrible division and now has Mayfield. Bowles has been mediocre his entire HC career, what’s there to get excited about? Only loyal TB fans will be interested and that may waver quickly if we aren’t at .500 after 4 games.

  65. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

If ownership were forward thinking, They’d pony up complimentary rum runners, and a zwiegles hot dawg, to every ticket just to fill up the stands this year. Cause 3-14 won’t get it done imo.

  66. adam from ny Says:

are we really in the grouping of the bottom 3 teams in the nfl…?

    come on…i don’t think that’s the case…we aren’t that bad…

but in a way i do wear rose colored glasses

  67. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Oh-kneelz,

The game times are based on where they be playing, not where you be living…,

  68. Titty twister Says:

Bucs fan from Oregon here.. we barely got to see any games out here even when Brady was playing.

  69. CleanHouse Says:

Enjoyed it while it lasted, we suck again

  70. Daniel Says:

We’ll get some 4 and 4:25 pm games. The NFL likes to avoid the Bucs playing at 1 pm in September with the heat. @SF will be a late afternoon game (we should probably just forfeit this one).

The Bucs have a bunch of prime opponents which will get them a few night games.

  71. mark2001 Says:

A name QB would help sell a nationally broadcast game. And being a good team would as well, competing for at least a Conference Championship. Unfortunately, this team seems to have neither.

  72. mark2001 Says:

David… The Bucs have a bunch of prime opponents which will get them a few night games. It might…unless the Bucs get repeatedly blown out of game. Then we might not even be considered for a night game. Of course, if NO or Carolina is clinching a division championship, it might be good viewing to those wanting to see the Bucs eat crow and get beaten down in a revenge game.

  73. Mike Johnson Says:

Look..Bucs start winning? And I guarantee you the networks will insert them into a few spots. They do it all the time. But the key word is…WIN.

  74. Capt.Tim Says:

    Lets hope so.

  75. Oneilbuc Says:

Doosh . How are going to tell me every game but the Germany game came on 12 o’clock or 3 o’clock or at 7 pm for prime time where I live. If it’s west coast than it will be a 3 o’clock game or 7 pm prime time. This is a fact and I want to apologize because of the name I call you. But I’m through with the name calling just because I have a different view than you are anyone else. That’s the problem with the site to me to much name calling towards people who is on the team and want the same goal and that goal is for the bucs to win . I’m done responding to guys that call people names because of a different opinion about the team.

  76. Colonel Angus Says:

    Right on Oneilbuc.

  77. Ed McSherry Says:

    Look-up (written 12 hours ago):

“Bury The Bucs At Your Own Risk”
    by, Luke Easterling

    Ditto that.

Peter King, I’m guessing didn’t mention Evans & Godwin when he predicted that the Buccaneers would come-in “31 of 32,” “they” (sports commentators who get paid for it) never do mention the reasons why they could be grossly miscalculating.

It’s only after they’re proved wrong that they remember all the pro-bowlers on that same team; then it’s: “well, it’s only because this player and that player had big seasons!”

    Ya, exactly.

  78. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I’m against us playing anything but 1 pm games, unless it is the playoffs. I’m also against home games the 1st 2 weeks of the season…because of hurricane season.

  79. J Fin Says:

Peter King, you are an idiot to the 10th degree.

  80. Herbiebuc Says:

I hate when we play prime time! We seem rattled by the night lights I know our prime time record the past 10 seasons is horrible

  81. Truyện Miễn Phí Says:

Peter King, you are an idiot.
