“I Believe In Baker Mayfield”

May 24th, 2023

Six-time Bucs Pro Bowl defensive tackle Gerald McCoy.

Joe is so happy Gerald McCoy is doing well in his trial runs as a national NFL analyst.

It’s great to have a Bucs homer on the big stage, where McCoy was via the NFL Network set this week.

“I believe in Baker Mayfield,” McCoy proclaimed. And he later followed that up with looks that said, ‘Stop asking me if I’m serious.’

McCoy sees Mayfield as primed to lean on one of the all-time greats and a solid supporting cast. McCoy was adamant that he believes the Bucs have the best “top-to-bottom” roster in the NFC South.

“Baker’s going to have to lean heavily on somebody I believe is a very underrated wide receiver in history: Mike Evans, man, he’s been a model of consistency, 1,000 yards in every season he’s been in the NFL,” McCoy said. “And they’re going back to a time of what I remember, a time where you didn’t have Tom Brady, where you had to actually like find different ways to try and win instead of saying, ‘Hey, we have No. 12 on our team.’

“But they got Rachaad White at running back. He made a big jump last year as a rookie. They still have Chris Godwin. But Mike Evans is going to play an integral role in this offense. Man, they are going to have to lean heavily on Mike.”

McCoy acknowledged the “Devin White situation” but he remains super confident in Lavonte David and likes the addition of defensive tackle Calijah Kancey, in part because Kancey will have Vita Vea to learn from and play off.

“I still believe that we will take that division. Y’all may not believe. But I believe it,” McCoy said.

But, but but…BBQBUC, CrackWise, and a few others from the peanut gallery have already decided that “Mini Mayfield” is way too little to even go on carnival rides, let alone play football…All of these Negative Nancy’s can’t be wrong, can they?

  2. Hodad Says:

It’s obvious he’d be a Mayfield homer. Just another in a long list, including everyone on GMF that aren’t giving Trask a chance to start.

  3. HC Grover Says:

    Mayfield is not Brady.

  4. SB Says:

And the GMC bashing starts in………3…2..1….

  5. BBQBUC Says:

Enough. You’re on like your fifth username. You’re not going to do like you’ve done before with your other usernames and hijack every friggin’ thread into a Kyle Trask slurpfest and everyone else is Lucifer for not sharing your love of Trask. If Trask becomes the starter, he’ll earn it and props to him if he does. No need to turn everyone else into some sort of Satan worshipper because they don’t take turns with your Trask doll. — Joe

  6. Vlad The Impaler Says:

    0…

Great! A GMC endorsement is like a kiss from Michael Coleone

  7. BBQBUC Says:

In the interest of truth in advertising, this site needs to be renamed MiniMayfieldFans.Com.

  8. Bojim Says:

    I’m a Traskfield homer.

  9. Vlad The Impaler Says:

    *Corleone

At least we know that Bowels will have a BM this season, right?

Thanks! I’ll be here all week

  10. CrackWise Says:

Joe in Michigan, is it fair to say that reading and comprehension is a struggle for you?

I will speak for all of us who want Trask to start over Baker. It’s not that hard to understand really.

Actually, never mind, I just remembered I have already crushed your fragile feelings one to many times. Besides, you ignore facts and go right to attacking people personally with your hurt feelings.

But here is one FACT that you ignore, Kyle was brought in to succeed Brady. So all this Baker Hype is annoying, just like your pointless attacks on other people’s opinions and optimistic outlooks.

Calling others names that you flip the bill for does not change FACTS!

  11. CrackWise Says:

BBQBUC, you got a Kyle Trask up doll. LMFAO.

Count me out on that rodeo but I do agree that Baker is getting way too much Hype. Almost like he is being set up for failure or something.

But to be fair, Baker is only getting the hype because there are a lot of Baker Dolls already in circulation.

    “feelings one to many times.”
    ^^^^^^^^^^
It’s “too”, not “to”. You’re welcome! Hahaha

  13. AnonymousBuc76 Says:

    Geraldine knock it off 🙄…

  14. Pewter Power Says:

It’s the nfl every one in the world just assumes a team is going to the superbowl because their team drafted a rookie quarterback. No one ever assumes they’ll end up like Zach Wilson. This is where we are now, picking Desmond Ridder over baker? Too many idiots doing sports analysis, the fact that I had to type the obvious about Desmond Ridder makes it look even worse. Who has the better roster for anyone to pick us last in the division

  15. Joe Says:

Count me out on that rodeo but I do agree that Baker is getting way too much Hype. Almost like he is being set up for failure or something.

Curious, what boring stories would you like for Joe to type about that will chase readers away? (How Luke Goedeke has adjusted his left foot and as a result he is convinced he will be able to manhandle Cam Jordan?) Right now, Mayfield is the starting quarterback. If Trask beats him out, the Bucs will trot Trask out for his required media sessions and availabilities and Joe will write about him just as much.

And, all the network talking heads will talk about Trask instead of Mayfield. (Joe’s written many, many times he’s not fully bought into Mayfield but understands why the Bucs took the gamble.)

People like to read/kvetch about the game’s most important player, the quarterback. It’s been that way for decades.

  16. Cobraboy Says:

McCoy speaks and nobody but casuals listen.

Except if he’s talking superhero or soft-serve…

  17. Crickett Baker Says:

Yes, Joe. This time of year it seems to be difficult to find things to write about. I actually got bored with this site when the articles were just quotes taken from the interviews already posted on the Buccaneer website. I would rather hear Joe’s opinions, actually.

Crackwise is not wrong when he said Kyle was actually brought in to succeed Tom. He surely needs a chance and I do not think Mayfield was hired specifically to be our starter. We surely needed to have 3 QB’s and I was amazed (considering our cap situation) that we got a “named” QB in Baker. He was a steal IMO–even if he is average (which I think underrates him to just call him average).

BTW, Vlad, your BM comment got me lol. This site usually has a comment or two that make me laugh as well as some I would rather not see. hahahaa And I can not believe someone named their son Baker, either. His parents must have had way different aspirations for him. 🙂

  18. CrackWise Says:

Awe Joe. come on man, that was not a shot at you. I was literally laughing out loud at what you said to BBQ. So I wanted to play off of that for the fun of it, like most if not all of my post. Not hear to make anyone’s day negative. If anything, just trying to get smiles and laughs.

I learned not to mess with you guys many moons ago. I think it is awesome how yall interact with the chat as well.

I was just making the observation that I think Baker is getting so much hype that I am concerned he is being set up for failure.

I appreciate what you are saying none the less. I would read the boring stories with just as much appreciation as I would the “boring stories”.

  19. CrackWise Says:

    “non-boring stories”
Had to correct that for the reading challenge folks who don’t understand how to fill the gaps when us NON-Literal Authors post. You know the one’s, they act like spelling police and ignore your entire post and questions to them and focus on simple grammar mishaps. As if it matters and is a good reason for them to attack you vs addressing your questions to them.

  20. D-Rok Says:

    When Joe says,
“You’re on like your fifth username.”

WAIT, what? People change their username?

    That would be uncivilized.

    LOL.

  21. Jeff’s grandpa Says:

Awww poor gator boi is sad about trask slurpfest haha

  22. ModHairKen Says:

“You’re on like your fifth username.”

I just spit out my coffee.

He’s probably working on number 6 right now.

  23. Redeemer Says:

Evans lost a step last year. It’ll only continue. You can’t expect a going on 30-year-old receiver to keep this up. I love Mike. He’s been a great player, but the handwriting is on the wall

  24. Beej Says:

Well he’s sure as **** faster then that cb from the Panthers

  25. Trask To The Future Says:

The Mayfield Hype like these comments from McCoy is a bit ridiculous.

Trask may certainly turn out to be a bust in the NFL and a waste of a 2nd round pick, but Mayfield hasn’t don’t much in the NFL now for multiple teams. Seems like his one Heinicke-like game winning comeback game for the Rams has people forgetting about his entire mediocre career.

He’s inaccurate and turns the ball over often.

  26. Lovelorn For Brady Says:

    Hey!
We’re all adjusting to life without Brady.
    Be considerate.
Have some empathy and some consideration for our feelings.
We’re working through a terrible loss

  27. ModHairKen Says:

Redeemer, can you offer any examples? He was a step ahead when he dropped that pass in Carolina.

Look at his career stats. This guy is steady, but he actually had more yards last year than 2020 and 2021. Third highest season, in terms of receptions. Five catches over 40 yards.

Clearly, the Offense was worse last year. Bad play-calling, lack of motivation in coaching, injuries on the OL, no appreciable threat at TE, player distractions, and probably a few more things that piled on.

But Evans losing a step? Not sure where that is coming from.

  28. SlyPirate Says:

    I DON’T AGREE WITH GMC
Evans is important but he’s not the only weapon. CG is a monster, the TEs have matured, and they’ll throw more to the RBs.

I also don’t see how Kancey will learn from Vea. Play off him, yes. Learn how to play like a 365 lbs nose, no.

    I DO AGREE WITH GMC
The Bucs have a very real chance to win the NFCS.

  29. Hodad Says:

Got to ask the one question about Baker. Why didn’t the Rams want to spend 4 million a year on Baker as a back up to Stafford? They could’ve given him the same 4 million in incentives as we did if he ened up starting in case Stafford got hurt. That would seem prudent for them to do considering Staffords injury history. Instead they passed, and I couldn’t tell you who their back up is, but I know Tarsk has one.

  30. Stormy Says:

    “Kyle Trask blow up doll”

Thanks, I now have to clean up the coffee off my computer monitor.

  31. SC Bucs Fan Says:

I believe in Baker Mayfield. In fact I believe he will have a horrible year.

  32. LANshark Says:

Hodad – answer is simple – BOTH sides needed to agree.. and Baker was not interested in staying as a backup. For all we know, the Rams offered him more than $4M, but NOT a shot to start. Hence, he moved on.

  33. RustyRhinos Says:

As a former NFL Good DT, I do respect his opinion.
And I still believe him when he says he finally felt at home in Pantherland. Concern for his opinion no, Bring back Steve White and his opinion and I am listening.

  34. NashvilleBuc Says:

“No need to turn everyone else into some sort of Satan worshipper because they don’t take turns with your Trask blowup doll. — Joe”

    [/quote]

Trask was brought in for Arian’s offense. Brady couldn’t run these bootlegs and swaggles every other down. That’s a FACT too.

  36. Big Rob Says:

Why would anyone be pulling for either QB ove the other? We haven’t seen Trask do anything in this league and the last we’ve seen of Mayfield wasn’t that great. From where this diehard Gator fan stands it’s an open competition and rightfully so. May the best QB win.

  37. #99 the big fella Says:

Joe in Michigan, the negative Nancy’s will be in full force until baker proves them wrong.. they can call Baker and Bowles names but call them a name and oh boy the crying begins.. unfortunately we live in a very negative world right now..

  38. Buc4evr Says:

I don’t believe in either Mayfield or Trask until I see them play in preseason and when the real bullets fly. Right now it’s pretty slow and talking heads have to make predictions to get clicks and views.

  39. Brandon Says:

    Joe… fantastic Trask rant. Slurpfest…Trask doll… nailed it! 🤪

  40. Brandon Says:

BTW, he’s 100% right. We do have the best roster in the South. Nearly every position we are either best or second best group. Even QB. Who will be better? Mayfield or Ridder or Bryce Young? I don’t even like Baker and I know he’d better than both.

  41. AtlBuc Says:

Everyone knows or should know that Trask will be the starter. It will be an embarrassment to have Baker Mayfield as our starting QB. If they’re even, Trask gets the nod. If Mayfield is just a little bit ahead of Trask (impossible), Trask gets the nod.

  42. TheLaughingMan Says:

    Go Jags…nuff said..lol

  43. TampabayDJ Says:

I hope this is just because it’s Summer time ! I love reading everything that the Joe’s put on this site , but I can’t stand a lot of you fake Buc fans that actually believe you know more about the Bucs, or the NFL , than the Joe’s ! Bandwagon crybaby spoiled fake fans. Go Bucs and go Joe’s

  44. Oneilbuc Says:

BBQ. Look bro I know the Joe that is saying this crap about you and Trask and blow up doll . It’s the same one who actually wants to tank for Caleb Williams!! So don’t let him get to you because last year most of the people on here had a Tom Brady blow up doll . And Brady didn’t do nothing but disrespect the coaching staff and fan base the way he acted last year. Even though Brady was changing the game plan last year they still made BL the scapegoat for Brady’s bad play on the field. So I know which one of the Joes that talked about the blow up doll he’s a anti Kyle Trask guy so don’t pay no attention what he says bro. He’s the same one who wanted Jonny Menzell. Lol 🤣🤣 ain’t nothing wrong with wanted to see what Trask got . There just scared Trask might be a good quarterback and that would put mud in his face!! So they are going extra hard promoting Baker Mayfield they are trying to sale tickets for the Glazers.

  45. Joe in Michigan Says:

Oneilbuc: “Jonny Menzell”? You spelled his first AND last name wrong.

  46. jimm Says:

if manzel stayed around a little longer … maybe he could have learned it.

btw didn’t look up spelling of name so didn’t include johnny (?) and just went from memory on manzel
