Devin White Began “Looking Like A Liability”

May 17th, 2023

Bucs ILB Devin White.

Harsh words on a Bucs linebacker coming from a guy who can count the hairs on his shiny head.

It seems analyst and follicly-challenged stathead Billy Barnwell of BSPN is beginning to sour on Bucs inside linebacker Devin White.

And no, it’s not because White has demanded a trade.

Barnwell, after monitoring tape of White from last season, concluded White has little to no leverage on the Bucs in his demand to be paid or be shipped elsewhere. Barnwell implied that no team will break the bank for White.

The 2019 fifth overall pick had an inconsistent season in 2022; he won Defensive Player of the Month in September before looking like a liability thereafter, particularly against the run. White was coming off of a Pro Bowl season, so this downturn in form was a bit of a surprise.

Look, Joe is not saying White is a bad linebacker. He’s a good linebacker. But White doesn’t have the elite-player status to dictate to Team Glazer that they must open the vault or trade him. Slow down.

Playing poorly against the run is likely a cardinal sin in Todd Bowles’ eyes. But Joe has never before heard anyone suggest White is poor against the run.

It’s no shock that White’s play hasn’t matched what he put on tape in the 2020 postseason, which was exceptional. Yes, White made the Pro Bowl for the 2021 season but in that season his play tailed off.

Predicting moves NFL teams will make before the NFL hibernates prior to training camp, Barnwell predicts White will return to the Bucs.

However, Barnwell cautioned Bucs fans. If the season begins to go south and White isn’t playing lights out, don’t be shocked if the Bucs trade him before the midseason deadline.

A national guy not riding Devins jock? How refreshing. The last time you posted about someone from BSPN mentioning White, it was all sunshine and roses from that particular analyst and how he deserved Roquan Smith money. It was ridiculous and almost insulting to see a man get paid to say that, when my fellow readers and you can see clear as day that, White has been inconsistent at best since his fabled playoff performance.

  2. bob in valrico Says:

Good bet that he will get half Roquan Smith money if his missed tackles don’t decrease wherever he goes. There are enough missed sack opportunities to affect
the bottom line of salary his IMO.

  3. Jonny Says:

I hope Devin White continues to be extremely popular with national sports media and gets a fat contract from some other team during the off season, netting us a compensatory 3rd pick.

  4. Rand Says:

More times than not many players will play lights out and get acknowledgement for their exemplary play only to try to coast when they think others aren’t watching. They are not what you want to inspire others especially if named a captain. Guarantee LVD doesn’t do that.

  5. FrontFour Says:

D White doesn’t want to be here. Find a way to move him out.

  6. Hodad Says:

If you could get a second round pick for him now I’d do it. If Dennis, and Banks show out in camp, cut bait with White.

  7. stpetebucfan Says:

It’s America and everybody is allowed to earn as much as they can.

That doesn’t make it admirable. ELEVEN FREAKING MILLION $$$

That’s not enough for White. OK he’s allowed to go for more but all of us are allowed to call him a disgusting greedy arsehole! I’m over the absolute GREED.

Cyndi Lauper had a great hit song in the 80’s. “Money Changes Everything”.

And sadly in many cases changes those who get it. I don’t care how good White played he can HONOR his contract and SETTLE for the measly 11 MILLION $$$ he’s set to earn!!!

  8. rrsrq Says:

The man is in the final year of his contract, which means he wants an extension like many players, he is not saying 11million is not enough, he just made it public. He knows, if he gets seriously injured this season, then there is no extension. The Bucs will not let him go, they are also taking a cup Han e on him balling out, if he does he will want more. We all know Get Live 45 has the potential to have a defensive mvp season.

  9. TheBucsAnthem Says:

Of White he’s looking bad if the WHOLE TEAM isn’t playing well……

White ain’t the problem here…..it was the whole damn team!!!!!!

  10. TheBucsAnthem Says:

The GM should be working 💪 a good trade behind the scenes for White…….he wants to move on……..then so be it!!!!!

  11. Joe Swanson Says:

Definitely not worth 20 mil a year. But if they give Bowles a gimme on this season next year he will convince Licht to resign him.

  12. Leopold Stotch Says:

Hodad: I would not trust Jeremy Banks as a reliable player or citizen as of right now. I watched his arrest video… It’s bad.

  13. BA’s Red Pen Says:

    Trade him for what?

  14. Infomeplease Says:

DW wants to be paid big. So I suggest DW shut his mouth and do his job as well as he is capable of. The results will either get him his $ or not! If he plays half ash, like he has been lately, he won’t be able to cash in. If he performs at a consistent high level he will be paid!

  15. Beej Says:

If he’d settle for $15 mil or so they might extend him, he has delusions of grandeur

  16. Craig Says:

He also sucks eggs in coverage.

He is a one trick pony, a delayed blitz rusher who still gets there one step too late and can’t complete a tackle without help.

Maybe he can have an XFL career.

  17. Jeebs the Honey Bear Says:

No no Joe. You almost had it right the first time: he is a bad linebacker. Having an occasional stretch of great play that accounts for about 20% of your total playing time doesn’t make you good, it makes you maddening and inconsistent. Being a complete liability in both the run game and pass coverage for 80% of the time makes you a bad linebacker. I would prefer we replace him with any available free agent veteran or even SirVocea Dennis who already looks better based on his college tape.

  18. Destinjohnny Says:

    He clearly can make
Splash plays that makes us all freak out

But he takes so many bad angles on so many other plays
Also I think the money changed him.

    If Brooks was a 10
    White is a 4

  19. Richard Says:

Honey bear is right on the money….anyone, and I mean anyone, who calls this guy even a good linebacker is not watching the films. For example, find the tape of 49ers qb Brock Purdy when the juked slightly left and then walked around 45 into the end zone. That is a typical DW effort….I’ve been saying this for a long time before his trade request…take time to watch game film from last year people….we should have traded him b4 the draft….not good against the run , can’t cover worth a damn, can’t shed blocks at all, misses numerous tackles, allows way too many yards after contact….did I miss anything? Please don’t even think about calling him a good LB!!!

  20. stpetebucfan Says:

“He knows, if he gets seriously injured this season, then there is no extension.”

Oh the horrors!!! That means POOR Devin is stuck having earned ONLY 30 freaking million dollars.

This is NOT ABOUT NEED. This is not a roofer who falls off and can no longer work. That poor roofer is then at the mercy of insurance companies and meager gov’t programs to continue if he can no longer work.

AGAIN…do any of you imagine the struggle you’d have if you were stuck with only 11 million on top of the 19 million you’ve already earned?

  21. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

He will always think he’s better than he is and demands special treatment. Narcissistic attitude. Decent but not great attitude. Trade him.

  22. Pewter Power Says:

I agree and I think most fans do. We went 3-2 first month off the season then he fell off after saying he got bored dominating. It was all downhill and has the nerve to think he deserves 100 mil just because he wants it.

  23. AlwaysBucs Says:

Unless the Bucs get a 3rd round pick or higher it makes ZERO sense to trade him. Analysts crack me up with their takes that defy logic, reason and facts it’s like having a conversation with the Cult that follows the criminal in Mara Lago

  24. SOEbuc Says:

NATTY ACTUALLY WATCHED FILM! Jenna doesn’t even do that, or in better words she doesn’t comprehend the game. Good job sir.

  25. rrsrq Says:

i love fans, the many of us that wish we could do what these professional athletes do. If we can ask for raises on our jobs, why can’t they, based on the market value of the job. His job pays millions, what should he do?

  26. Gbuc62 Says:

    Trade White for Dalvin Cook…done.

  27. JeffreyLane77 Says:

Devon White is a good linebacker and we have seen how well he can play. The 2020 season he played elite dude was everywhere. He was incredible in the playoffs. Everybody expected White to play at a high level for years to come. Devon White deserves all the praise and accolades bestowed upon him for that 2020 season. I’m just wondering what’s going on with him? His “elite” play has diminished to “good” with moments of being a “liability”. Now he’s upset with his contract and has asked for a trade. If White returns to his elite 2020 form this season. What does that say? Does it say he only plays elite when motivated by a Superbowl or the prospect of a big contract? I would be concerned about his play after he gets what he wants. Will Devon White continue to be motivated to play at an elite level after he signs a new contract? Or will his play return to complacency?

  28. Bucamania Says:

All for a trade with this guy.

  29. Kelly C. Bowman, Sr. Says:

I was really pissed off when White basically blew the game against the Bengals. The way to beat the Bengals is simply to get Burrows rattled and they did it in the first half and had a nice lead at halftime. It could have been ditto for the 2nd half, they had him reeling. Then they buried him with a 30+ yard sack that would have given the ball back to Tampa… except when they already had Burrows wrapped up and going down, White committed pass interference that put them right back in scoring position…and changed the tempo of the entire game.

  30. Kelly C. Bowman, Sr. Says:

I left out one thing. With the proper attitude adjustment, he can still lead a great defense, but demanding much more than he’s worth while showing disloyalty to his team is not going to get him there.

  31. BucsFanSince1976 Says:

My advice to Devin-be quiet and work hard at your craft , it needs the effort.

  32. Tony Says:

Trade Devin White to Jacksonville for Josh Allen. Who they should’ve taken from the beginning.

  33. Who Says Says Can't Say Says:

Losing a parent unexpectedly like he did can mess a person up, he may need a little more time.

Also, my hunch is he can’t stand playing for Todd Bowles because he doesn’t believe Bowles is a winner. Just a wild guess on my part.

  34. Fred McNeil Says:

Whites a good linebacker, but not an elite one. Maybe if he can go back to wracking up sacks …

  35. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

We shall see after this year.

  36. Lenne Gilzow Says:

    Honor your contract.
    Plain and simple.
