Warren Sharp Not Yet Buying Bucs Have Their Quarterback

April 10th, 2023

Low risk.

Warren Sharp is all about numbers.

The former handicapper turned stathead lives with numbers. If the numbers tell him something is good, then it’s good. If the numbers tell him something bad, yeah, then it’s bad.

As a result, Sharp and his staff aren’t sold that the Bucs have their future quarterback in Kyler Traskfield. You can read between the lines and conclude Sharp believes the Bucs may just surprise some folks in the draft.

Sharp is down specifically on Baker Mayfield, but if Mayfield is to turn around his career, the Bucs have the receivers he’ll need, Sharp typed..

In 2022 with the Panthers and Rams, Mayfield was … 30th in success rate (35.6%), and 29th in yards per pass attempt (6.5 Y/A).

If looking for a silver lining, at least Mayfield will be throwing to multiple viable wide receivers. All he had in 2022 was D.J. Moore for his stint with the Panthers before taking over a Los Angeles offense down Cooper Kupp.

Joe is willing to believe Mayfield had some success in Los Angeles because offensive wunderkind Sean McVay knows what he is doing.

And it is intriguing to Joe that a guy somewhat familiar with an offense derived from McVay is now leading the Bucs offense instead of a rank incompetent.

This is why Joe is bullish on Mayfield. It’s a low-cost investment. And if new Bucs coordinator Dave Canales and the Bucs’ superior receivers can help turn Mayfield around, the Bucs have found their quarterback for perhaps years to come.

Low risk/potentially high reward.

    Seriously….what’s up with that hat?

  2. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Mayfield has never had the quality of receivers he will have here in Tampa/

Sharp can eat a bag of dongs! Baker will shine in TB!

  4. SlyPirate Says:

Baker will be great in 3, okay in 10 games, and terrible in 4 games. It’s a curve.

    WIN vs LOSS = DEFENSE
If the defense shows up in Baker’s okay and great games, the Bucs win. Remembering the article on Bucs defense, the Bucs defense shows up 40-50% of the time.

    PREDICTION
Based on the aforementioned, you can expect the Bucs to win 6-7 games this year. Vegas has the Bucs at 6.5. Crazy.

  5. TampaBayBucsFanSince1976 Says:

    Baker Weighfield looks overweight.

  6. Hodad Says:

Hopefully Baker can be a valuable back up this year.

  7. Goatfarmer Says:

Bucs will add two more QBs before camp, they need four to conduct practice with all those 90 guys. One via draft, and either an UDFA or a gristly veteran. I believe Bowels when he talks about a true competition for the starting job. Why? Because he knows he either posts a winning record in 2023 or he’ll be opening a chain of jock itch therapy clinics in 2024.

  8. Tim Says:

Good God, who let him leave the house looking like that?

Goat medical industry is a huge money maker these days.

Maybe he will wear that hat instead of a helmet.

  11. Craig Says:

I am not bullish on Mayfly.

He does better, by a lot, when he stays in the pocket, but doesn’t have the sense to know that.

He will probably be day 1 starter, but won’t make it more than six games. At 204 his interceptions will be close to his touchdown number.

  12. Bucswin Says:

I’d say Mayfield is the best QB coming out of the draft.

  13. Rod Munch Says:

Mayfield is fine as a low-risk signing, but people thinking he’s going to actually be good, they haven’t bothered to go back and watch his tape from the last two years when he was LITERALLY the worst QB in the NFL. Last year he had the lowest QBR rating by 10 points, if you know what QBR is, you know that’s incredible.

As for the upside with Mayfield….umm, maybe you win 6 games.

We shall see, but no one who actually watched him tape is bullish on him. With that said, I honestly do hope he does well and the Bucs are in the playoffs, and if that happens, give me a full verbal beatdown, I’ll be happy to take it. Meanwhile, when Mayfield **shockingly** turns out to be awful, all those in the comment section now attacking anyone that questions Mayfield, well, all those people will just say they never liked the signing and they were the first to claim it wouldn’t work. Just wait and see, it’s the same thing every year.

  14. Buc4evr Says:

I am not convinced that either of these QBs will start this year. Hoping Jason has something else up his sleeve after the draft. How many times over the decades have we been optimistic about a new QB, only to have them turn out to be a flop. There is too much talent on this team to entrust the QB position to either of the QBs on this team.

  15. Geno711 Says:

If people think Mayfield is going to be good, they already apparently have forgotten how Jameis Winston looked as a Buc.

Giving him a chance to get to the Jameis highwater win total of 9 wins. Maybe have a year like Jameis in 2016. 28 TDs and 18 ints.

  16. Rand Says:

I think Mayfield may have found a little success in L.A. because of their O-line. The same O-line that protected Stafford but even then he was only able to win one out of four games. I can’t imagine if our O-line can’t play at a Brady protection level how Mayfield will overcome his dreadful career numbers to this point.

  17. Rand Says:

Mayfield must think he’s Billy Jack

  18. Goatfarmer Says:

It’s not like the Bucs have Dan Marino dueling against John Elway for the job. This is a bit of a cripple fight. Boewls knows it’s win or else, and it’s the head coach’s job to put the players on the field that give the team the best chance to win. Canales and staff will have significant input, obviously. Those sniveling to see Trask with the ones will get their chance in preseason. Unless he just sucks out loud in practice.

Meanwhile, doors numbered three and four have yet to be opened.

  19. Goatfarmer Says:

Trask Alone – I LOL’d at your medical industry comment.

    ——-

Having a top 5 offense when you have the worst defense and kicking game in the NFL – yeah, Winston was the problem. LOL!

It’s remarkable how stupid people are.

    People!!!
Mayfield and Trask is what we got! Move on!
