The Next Aaron Donald?

April 27th, 2023

Bucs DT Calijah Kancey.

Vita Vea will like this pick.

With all of the Bucs’ three division rivals stocking up on offense, the Bucs decided to counter with a defensive pick. Defensive tackle Calijah Kancey of Pitt is considered by some the next Aaron Donald. He’s apparently that good.

Here is what SIS Football Solutions had to type about Kancey.

Kancey projects best as a penetrating 3-technique in an even-front scheme at the next level. While he still needs to develop as a pass rusher, he should find success there with his high motor and quickness off the ball. His ability against the run, working both laterally and vertically, using quickness and strength, should allow him to see plenty of playing time on early downs as a rookie. On 3rd downs, allowing him to penetrate and just get after the quarterback is where he will find the most success. His strength and relentlessness should allow him to see some time on special teams, even outside of punt return and field goal block.

Yup, he’s a run-stopper. Just like Todd Bowles likes.

Still have a ton of needs and we don’t have a QB so I still think we’ll suck next year.

But this is a great pick. Dude could be special.

  2. Jim Says:

OMG. The Jason Leith loving joe-joes thin he is the next aron donald? Seriously? then why wasn’t he the first pick of the draft? or the second? or the third? JL is just a bad GM. Too bad the LJ loving Joe-Joes can’t see it.

  3. Aceofaerospace Says:

Kay Adams sold me on the pick. She could sell me ocean front property in South Dakota also, but that’s beside the point.

  4. Bee Says:

Don’t think we’ll find a QB this year. We need a high draft pick for that and I think Trask or Baker will get us there for next year’s draft.

  5. TDTB2022 Says:

    The new #93!!!!

  6. Shane247 Says:

This guy could end up being the steal of the draft!

  7. Stevek Says:

Sexy pick here. Perfect guy to put next to vita and create havoc.

  8. D-Rome Says:

    Good pick.

  9. Rod Munch Says:

Aaron Donald was the next Warren Sapp.

So Kancey = 1st ballot HOFer

Should have been the 1st overall pick without a doubt!

  10. firethecannons Says:

Bleacher Report guys gave it an A and an A+ and calais campbell really likes it he is chris simms #2 DT he is a good player and the BPA for us at this pick Good!

  11. Fred McNeil Says:

If Todd uses my starting 3tech on special teams I will personally ride my Yamaha down to RayJay and kick him straight in the nads.

  12. Yucs2Bucs Says:

Dumb organizations make dumb pics !!! Could have traded with the Steelers and got a 2nd or 3rd rounder.. Why draft Logan Hall last year, but I guess they are worried about Vitas weight and motor because some had him in the second, but of course they take a flyer on their first when they needed OL help ??? They say he’s got a good motor and was voted defensive player of the year in the ACC and let’s hope he’s another Donald. Only time will tell, but I wish they would have traded to get more capital because of all the needs !!! We need a tackle, CB because Davis is soft as butter and a safety. Texans came to play tonight and landed Young and Anderson ( and will say this now, but they could have the best offensive and defensive players of the year ) We freaking took a DT at 17, but it’s going to be a loooong year and PLEASE trade Devin and get a 2nd and 3rd for his ungrateful and lazy Azz.. Tank for Caleb is in full effect and the next pick needs to be a tackle and Mike Evans and Devin White hopefully are on the Bills radar and it’s time to capitalize with picks and maybe Davis at WR!! Go Yucs Go and big win by the Bolts !!! If you think about it they should have closed it out in Toronto after giving up two leads at Amelie, but I still believe

  13. Capt.Tim Says:

    To small for a DT
    To slow for DE
    Hes the next Logan”Mr.Invisible” Hall

JTS, Hall, and now the Hall clone.

Ive lost all faith in Licht, and he should be drug tested
    Then fired

  14. MadMax Says:

Alright we need O line or TE that can help O line next….then Achane!

  15. Jmarkbuc Says:

Hope he’s got stamina… Vea only plays half the snaps.. on a good day.

  16. Canabuc Says:

Hmmm didn’t like where we picked him with Nolan Smith there. That said he could be a stud. Donald fell to 14 after all. So him not going first is just a silly comment.

In any case glad we didn’t go QB or Branch. Now let’s trade up in round 2 and go Dawand Jones!

  17. FortMyersDave Says:

I agree with Bee, Levis and the Vol kid are not the answers at QB, wait until 2024. If Mayfield/Trask implode and the Bucs go 4-13 then they will be in a prime spot to get a qb for the new head coach. If Mayfield succeeds then awesome! So now on day 2 Licht needs to get some beef for the OL.

  18. Joseph C Simmons Says:

I love the player, but how does he fit our scheme? He’s a perfect 3-tech in a 4-3 defense…but we don’t run the 4-3 anymore. Where’s he going to play? DE in the 3-4? Isn’t that a thankless block-eater position?

  19. Robert Says:

If Vita takes on two we might actually have a solid up front in 3-4 and be able to get the qb. I would have like OL more, but D line was my number two. I ain’t mad about the pick if he is good.

  20. BootyLover Says:

Kali Ma! Kali Ma! Kali Ma! Temple of Doom. Nickname maybe?

    “Om Namah Shivaya“

  21. jimm Says:

hit it (not suh). didn’t we have a quick penetrating 3 tech with a quick step … that didn’t want to play in 3-4? how many sacks/runs stopped

this is bowels pick that jl gave him … to show his support of the hc.

maybe hall will move to olb along with d white ?

  22. Fred McNeil Says:

I guess Logan Hall is now a pivot man. Get him some heavy duty knee pads.
Logan, you hear me? Play like your hair’s on fire and earn some non-special teams time.

  23. Capt.Tim Says:

    We never learn.
    “The next Aaron Donald”
Hall isnt big enough or fast enough.
At least he was tall enough!
Whats more useless than a tweener?
    A SHORT tweener.

  24. Steven007 Says:

Jim seems to forget that Donald wasn’t the first pick either even though he was thought highly of. He went at 14. The comp I’ve seen the most for Donald is John Randle. Youngsters might not be as familiar, but Randle was a monster. He was Sapp before Sapp. If this kid can be 75% of Donald we’ve got a great pick on our hands.

  25. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Jim Says
“OMG. The Jason Leith loving joe-joes thin he is the next aron donald? Seriously? then why wasn’t he the first pick of the draft? or the second? or the third? ”

Neither was Aaron Donald…who was also taken in the teens.

  26. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

  27. Bucamania Says:

    Licht got this one right.

  28. DingleBerry Says:

    @capt tim

Look up Aaron Donald’s height and weight. Then look up John Randle’s height and weight.

Then tell me he’s too small.

  29. DingleBerry Says:

and too slow? Dude literally ran a 4.67 at 281 pounds. That’s the fastest 40 time from a DT in 20 years.

  30. Steven007 Says:

Bonzai, I stand corrected. And while I’m at it I meant that Kancey was comped with Randle.

  31. Yucs2Bucs Says:

Anyone that thinks this was a good pick needs to be drug tested like Jason L !!! What a joke and I will respect them if they trade White for either a 2nd or 3rd, but the Bucs turning into the Yucs !!!! Todd Sucks and to all the fans that like this pick how are they going to protect Baker ?? Once he gets knocked out and Kylie takes over the sheet show begins and why take a flyer on a player like this especially in the first round. Did you see the players available and why not trade out of that position and get capital ?? Oh I forgot who’s at the helm and going to be a long and bad year, but at least the Glazers locked season ticket holders for another year because if they truly cared about the fans they would have made some important moves to show us they know what they are doing !! I feel like Man United fans that can’t stand them because they don’t know how to run a franchise ( minus the Brady years where they got so lucky and still feels like a dream) but now 15 years will go by and we maybe will make the playoffs twice !! Still no OL help, safety, and CB but PLEASE trade Devin and let Mike go to a team where he can win another SB and pray we can get get picks !!! Hall, Vita, JTS, and now another Nacho ?? We are going to be bottom feeders in the easiest division and we have no one to blame, but Licht and the Glazers and don’t forget we have Todd Bowel movement as our HC ( who couldn’t even handle the best QB in the league I might add ) if he’s not fired after a 0-6 start I will be shocked !!!!! Even if we flub for Caleb who on this staff is going to coach him where he can reach his potential?? We have a staff not even food enough to coach in the USFL or even the Canadian football league. Such a joke and really thought this organization was going to make moves and get this base excited, but was I and others surely wrong !!! So pathetic and 4 wins will be a stretch, but welcome back to the lost years at the Den of Depression.. YUC LIFE

  32. J Says:

Dear baby Jesus, please let this pick by right. I don’t like comparisons. They never pan out. Aaron Donald was lightening in a bottle. It never happens twice.

  33. DingleBerry Says:

@J Aaron Donald isn’t the only undersized DT who succeeded in the NFL because he was a freak athlete, and he won’t be the last.

  34. Yucs2Bucs Says:

@joe the lack of comments just shows that this organization is so irrelevant and people aren’t interested in this joke of a franchise!!! Thank God for hockey and baseball

  35. Yucs2Bucs Says:

@dingleberry this guy couldn’t even hold Donald’s jock strap

  36. J Says:

@DingleBerry, you just made the most predictable predictions in the history of predictions. Stupid.

  37. DingleBerry Says:

Both of you clowns need to go watch his tape. This kid is special.

  38. Onebadbuc Says:

Yucs2bucs he was picked 19th dummy get your facts straight

  39. Pryda … sec147 Says:

I really really love us continuing to pick Trenches players with 1st keep it up we’re bound to strike gold soon

  40. Goatfarmer Says:

MadMax — same page brother! Same page!!!

  41. Cebolatti Says:

Are y’all really bucs fans ? Alot of negative comments y’all need to chill . It’s to early to predict u cant jus go draft a player thinking they go work it’s all bout scheme lil dumb mother****

  42. garro Says:

This is a huge gamble for Licht.
    3 years in a row?
    Are you kidding me?
Unbelievable! I would have believed a kicker before i believed this!

  43. YungBuc09 Says:

Geez, do some of you even use your brains? We have one guy talking about talking about if he were so good why didn’t he go first or second when literally the point of the article and video was Donald dropping to 14th. Then we have him talking about it was dumb to take him at 17 when we actually took him 19th. We have others talking about we should have gone OL in the first, despite the fact that JL hits on lineman’s no matter the round. This is truly sad.

  44. Robbery727 Says:

Man I cant believe all this negativity. As bucs fan the sh** has been deep and because of a couple of Brady years you guys forget that.
This kid was best available and hes a beast at that spot. The best OT’s were gone. And for him to still have been there was a no brainer for us because if his value. Luke will move to right. Whirf’s to left. You got hainsey and Jensen ( who can both start guard or center) and felder who is a starting guard.
Baker has better running around ability and will create different angles to throw from and give mike alot of 50/50 jump balls when hes in a pinch. And 90% of the time he catches it or gets a DPI.Dont forget mike got manzeil drafted and baker is a better version of him. There are a sh** ton of positives to look at right now. Reserve your negativity for week 7 or 8 when we realize we are still the bucs and our coach is trash ……

  45. TampabayDJ Says:

All of you talking about ” If he’s the next Aaron Donald or Sapp then he should have been the first pick in the draft ” … Well , neither Sapp nor Donald were the first picks in the draft. Matter of fact , Donald was picked after late . We picked Evans ( And I wouldn’t have it any other way as he’s the best offensive player ever on our Bucs) and a lot of other teams picked players that were bust over Donald and Sapp. So chill out and stop complaining about everything our Bucs do . Unless you’re a fake bandwagon fan

  46. TampabayDJ Says:

@YungBuc09 – Thank you 💯 !! Agree with everything you said and it was well said. Go Bucs

  47. Ernie Says:

I truly believe that bucs fans will be wearing Baker Mayfield jerseys for a while. Dude has had a different offensive coordinator almost every year in the league. The guy is a dog and a hell of a teammate. Yes he’s not TB12 but who is it anyways? I’m rooting for Baker and I got a conviction that he will be in Tampa to stay. To all the naysayers you will be shamed by your negativity. Mark my word. Go Bucs!
