NFL Draft Rounds Nos. 2 & 3, Open Thread

April 28th, 2023

Bucs GM Jason Licht.

So here we are for the second night of the NFL draft where the Bucs will add two more players to their roster, maybe more with a trade.

Will the Bucs grab an offensive tackle? A safety? An edge rusher? A running back? A quarterback?

Bang it here all night long with your Bucs thoughts and other happenings surrounding the draft.

As always, play nice! 🙂

  1. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Mauch, Branch or D Washington

  2. HC Grover Says:

    Want BEEF!

  3. Paul Wartenberg Says:

I JUST WANT AN OFFENSIVE TACKLE, IS THAT SO WRONG???

  4. Bucaneeric Says:

Four? Someone has been up all night and day.

  5. H-Town Darryl Says:

TE, O-Line, and RB….need to trade back

  6. Alstott up the gut Says:

Can’t believe Branch is there! Need line today but would love using the five picks in rounds 5 and 6 to move up if Branch can be had!

  7. SB~LV Says:

Gotta PAY and move up in the 2nd and get the guy you want!

  8. Rod Munch Says:

I will recommend the ESPN YouTube feed for people that want to see draft coverage where they actually talk about the players abilities, and how they’ll do in the NFL and show highlights, etc. It was quite good last night, no sob stories, no dead parents, and no commercials.

  9. Infomeplease Says:

So many needs, so few picks. Take the best available of our needs. OT (preferred left tackle), ILB, Nickel Corner, Edge, TE?, RB? LFG!!

  10. MadMax Says:

Well, lets be real….if we stay put, O’Cyrus and Avila will be gone, so will Washington, who I want badly….so I guess go with Mauch or LB Simpson…or maybe Hooker if he’s there (he wont be)…or if none of them are there, that leaves us with a trade down…OR just go ahead and snag ACHANE!

    ACHANE, ACHANE, ACHANE, ACHANE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. MadMax Says:

    Tucker Kraft after Achane!

  12. SB~LV Says:

    Thanks
    Rod M
I’m going there now, I watched the Pat McAfee YouTube last night and it was awesome
I too hate the sob stories and overhype

  13. Paul Wartenberg Says:

    OT or death!
    OT or death!
    OT or death!

  14. MadMax Says:

Yeah Rod, thats who I watched last night

  15. BillyBucco Says:

I love people saying someone will be there.
Aint none of you thought Gibbs would go at 12

  16. Buc4evr Says:

Bucs needs to move up to get Avila, Jones or Ringo. Or even Mayer at TE. Here we go! Steelers probably want Joey porter jr… lol.

Would not be surprised if Jason goes off the reservation and gets Hooker or Levis.

  17. Infomeplease Says:

    LFG!!

  18. Rod Munch Says:

I’d look for an ILB, if there’s anyone available. I want someone who is fast and can cover, because David isn’t going to be here forever.

For the offensive line, just depends on value, but it’s not like the team is going to compete this year, so I wouldn’t reach for anyone.

  19. Buc4evr Says:

Oh wonderful my posts are awaiting moderation. So much for real time responses.

  20. Paul Wartenberg Says:

Who’s gonna riot if we draft a QB?

  21. Rod Munch Says:

If the Bucs got Hooker in the 2nd, I’d be fine with that.

  22. Oxycondoms Says:

Licht just pulled off a trade!! His wings for onion rings

  23. Paul Wartenberg Says:

It’s pronounced YEE-Bor, Tom Grossi, and the Y is silent.

  24. Paul Wartenberg Says:

Will Levis finally drafted. Our long national nightmare is over.

THIS FREES UP MORE OT FOR US!!!

  25. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Here we go!!!

  26. Paul Wartenberg Says:

ffffff I was hoping for LaPorta in the Third Round…

  27. Tucker Says:

I’d be more than fine if the bucs didn’t draft hooker at all and drafted tune late in the draft.

  28. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Brian Branch
    Keeanu Benton
    Zach Charbonnet
    Julius Brents
    Keion White
    Dawned Jones
    John Michael Schmitz

  29. Paul Wartenberg Says:

There’s a run on TE now.

  30. Paul Wartenberg Says:

    there goes Avila

  31. Dom N. Nick Says:

    Meanwhile back the ranch…

Joe, the crazies and zombies come out on draft days!!!

  32. Paul Wartenberg Says:

whoa, my mom is pissed the Bucs won’t draft Derrick Hall now.

  33. Paul Wartenberg Says:

    FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF THE FALCS TOOK BERGERON

  34. SRQSalt Says:

If Branch is still there he’s a solid need pick, what about the Mauch even Torrence?

  35. MadMax Says:

always here for your entertainment Dom…enjoy the show while sippin your glass of wine with your pinky sticking out lol

  36. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Does Brian Branch molest collies?
    Why the slide?

  37. Ben the GA Buc Says:

Predicting Mingo to the Cats now

  38. MadMax Says:

Come on Washington!!!! Fall to us at 50!!!!

  39. Paul Wartenberg Says:

Branch is sliding because his height and skill set make him more of a situational slot DB than a full-time safety, even WITH all the positive intangibles.

  40. KnoxvilleBuc Says:

T.Simpson, B. Branch, D. Washington, K. White are all in reach!

  41. Pa Privateer Says:

I would be fine with hooker at #50, or the Clemson ILB Trenton Simpson. Or trade Devin White and move up a little

  42. Paul Wartenberg Says:

    OT OR DEATH!
    OT OR DEATH!!!

  43. MadMax Says:

Torrence will go in a few for sure…unless theres some stuff we dont know about….

  44. Fansince76 Says:

Edge rushers are now all about gone damn

  45. Big Z Says:

Branch dropping because his slow 40.
Nice job JL all the quality DE are about gone. I really like Musgrave but we waited.
    No on Hoooker.

  46. Paul Wartenberg Says:

dammit I was hoping for C Tippman in the Third.

  47. Ben the GA Buc Says:

We’ll be all right. Need to beef up the O with this next pick. Good with OL or RB. If they go with Hooker I will understand. I think Hooker will make a good NFL QB.

  48. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    There goes Julius Brents

  49. BucsFan81 Says:

All of the edge rushers and Oline went fast. I hope they have some kind of answer for this offensive line or mayfield will be running for his life.

  50. Buc50 Says:

I love all the people saying trade back. Look at all the players we wanted being grabbed before we even get to draft our 2nd round pick.

  51. Paul Wartenberg Says:

why did the Pack trade with Lions? You’re not supposed to trade with teams in your own division. it’s an unwritten rule. it’s collusion.

  52. Big Z Says:

    Torrance or Ringo

  53. Ben the GA Buc Says:

    IJLIT

  54. Paul Wartenberg Says:

only reason now to trade down is if the OTs we need are gone at 50, and we can snag an extra Third or Fourth out of it.

  55. Elita Vita Says:

Everyone seems to be making clever trades while the Bucs sit in the corner and hide…..oh boy!

  56. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Brian Branch Solid Pick

  57. KnoxvilleBuc Says:

    Solid pick by the Lions.

  58. David Says:

Darn. It was getting close, so I was hoping Brian branch would be there for the Buccaneers.

  59. Go Bucs Says:

Let Licht do his thing. Licht brought us a SB!

  60. Paul Wartenberg Says:

Wait did Tampa Bay trade up from 50?

  61. Herbiebuc Says:

    We traded up Hooker 🤞🏾🤞🏾🤞🏾

  62. BucsFan81 Says:

We just traded up. What did we give up.

  63. Tucker Says:

    Hope not

  64. Paul Wartenberg Says:

    Keon White gone, WHOA.

  65. Paul Wartenberg Says:

Bucs traded up to Packers which got it from trade-down to Lions. Bucs now at 48. OH GOD WE’RE GOING FOR AN OT!!!!

  66. Buc50 Says:

    Bucs take Cody Mauch

  67. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Here we go 🤞

  68. Dewey Selmon Says:

    We jumped Pittsburgh. why?

  69. Destinjohnny Says:

We usually trade up for guys that wont get drafted for 2 more rounds

  70. Geno711 Says:

not a fan of another small school Guard. Jeez

  71. Big Z Says:

    Torrence please!

  72. Marine Buc Says:

    I like the pick.

Welcome to Tampa Cody. Please get that grill fixed son…

  73. Paul Wartenberg Says:

    THE PICK IS IN!!!!

  74. FortMyersDave Says:

Oh yes! Gave up pick 179 to leapfrog the Steelers.

  75. Geno711 Says:

I guess we are building the trenches though.

  76. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Yeah!

  77. SB~LV Says:

    Likee !

  78. HC Grover Says:

    Huh? Who?

  79. FortMyersDave Says:

I concur Marine Buc Mr Licht loves these small college lineman. Fills a need. I guess the Bucs knew the Steelers were looking for OL help too.

  80. DoooshLaRue Says:

    MarineBuc,

Maybe he’ll live in Pasco County and a full set of teeth is seen as showboating?

  81. alaskabuc Says:

Licht with the big ugly! Fired up about Mauch, him and Jensen are gonna be the “Red Tide”, LFG!

  82. Paul Wartenberg Says:

CODY MAUCH!!!! YES!!!! OT!!!! WE WIN!!!!

  83. Rod Munch Says:

    That’s a Licht pick.

Only question is if he can play early or needs a year of seasoning.

  84. FrankfurtBuc Says:

    Yeah

  85. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Geno

What did you expect from the man who drafted Marpet, Cappa and Goedeke…

    LOL.

    I actually like the pick.

Cody will provide a nice young nasty lineman who will compete for the starting OG spot but also might be able to replace Josh Wells as the swing OT as well…

  86. Ghost of Tom Brady Says:

    l approve of this pick

  87. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

LOVE LOVE LOVE the missing front teeth

  88. David Says:

    Big nasty with an attitude.

  89. Just Leave Trask Alone Says:

    Great pick!

  90. Ben the GA Buc Says:

Looks like Ryan Jensen, hope he plays like Jensen.

  91. Bucamania Says:

Just had to draft another small school OL. He’s gotta be better than Goedeke,

  92. Infomeplease Says:

We got a LT!! So far so good!

  93. shak Says:

i dont dislike the pick but my boy left his teeth in a cup!

  94. Aceofaerospace Says:

I like it. Another big nasty.

  95. HC Grover Says:

    The Beef people! More Beef!

  96. rrsrq Says:

Left or Rt tackle? Is he developmental or plug and play?

  97. David Says:

He is going to help with Jensen to give them some attitude. He weighs 300 pounds but looks like he can add 20 pounds easily.

  98. Upstate NY BUC Says:

    Nice!!!

  99. Tabascco Says:

    Aol

  100. Jeagan1999 Says:

    Yes! Cody Mauch! Great OL!

  101. Infomeplease Says:

He played LT in a run heavy scheme!

  102. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Rod

O-lineman always take a few years to develop. Even Marpet and Cappa had issues their first few seasons.

  103. CBWells Says:

    I like this pick!!!!

  104. Sly Pirate Says:

Licht’s becoming predictable with the small school OL

  105. Ben the GA Buc Says:

Licht nails these picks more often than he doesn’t. I think this kid will get after it.

  106. Leopold Stotch Says:

    Let’s goooo!

  107. Paul Wartenberg Says:

Ali Marpet vibes with the Mauch pick.

  108. Tabascco Says:

Love the pic will be a fan favorite !!!!

  109. Rod Munch Says:

The NFL.com comparison is… Alex Cappa.

I’d be good with that. Only issue is small school guess, unless they’re elite physically, like Marpet, normally need a year to develop.

  110. All_da_way Says:

Bucs are smart to focus on trenches.

  111. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Okay…I’m happy with this draft. The only thing that would make it better is a QB, TE, and Center.

  112. Buc4evr Says:

Typical Jason move. Small school Guard/OT. I should have guessed something like that…. Lol.

  113. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

The NFL.com comparison is… Alex Cappa.

That’s where Jason Licht finds his OL guys…he’s great at finding them there.

  114. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I understand the pick but not the trade up…….Licht must get nervous and pees his pants and has to trade up for these small school olinemen.

  115. Buc Fan South Tampa Says:

No front teeth. Clearly going after the Plant City fan base

  116. Geno711 Says:

    Marine Buc.

I am a Buc fan, I will warm up to Cody Mauch.

  117. shak Says:

they just called cody Tud on his hometown draft party feed.

  118. Geno711 Says:

Lots of posters said build trenches. Should be happy group based upon first two picks.

  119. Paul Wartenberg Says:

okay, so what’s the Third Round pick? Safety? Corner? Tight End.

  120. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Geno

Especially if he becomes an All-Pro OG for the next 8 seasons…

    LOL.

  121. Infomeplease Says:

Next IMO, a nickel corner, LB, or TE. LFG!

  122. CrackWise Says:

Haven’t seen a gap like that in a long time. Maybe Strahan

  123. Just Saying Says:

Feels like another unnecessary trade up for a player that would have been there anyway.

  124. FortMyersDave Says:

Tampabaybucfan, I get what you are saying but what if the Bucs did not trade up and the Steelers traded down and another team took Mauch or the Steelers stood pat and took him? It was just a 6th round flyer anyhow. Other teams were giving up 4th and 5th round picks to move up a bit earlier in the 2nd round. Packers traded down twice actually. Anyhow the Bucs did have 2 2nd round picks. I am okay with sacrificing one.

  125. Paul Wartenberg Says:

all the trade up cost us was one of the three Sixth Rounders, which we could EASILY trade away at this point. This wasn’t like giving up a FOURTH pick to move up to get a kicker a few years back.

  126. Brian Says:

    Good pick a LEFT tackle!

  127. FortMyersDave Says:

    2 6th round picks, not 2 2nd round picks……

  128. Geno711 Says:

SUMMARY: A three-year starter at North Dakota State, Mauch manned the left tackle position in offensive coordinator Tyler Roehl’s run-heavy, gap-power scheme.

Although he wasn’t often challenged on an island in pass protection, Mauch has the foot quickness and body control to comfortably operate in space and skillfully maneuver from block to block.

Overall, Mauch doesn’t have ideal length or sand in his lower body, but he has outstanding movement skills, fierce handwork and innate competitiveness to become a starter early in his NFL career.

He should get a look at tackle first but also projects well inside, reminiscent of Mitch Morse.

  129. Bucamania Says:

No way they are thinking this guy is the starting LT.

  130. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Such a Licht pick Lol

  131. FortMyersDave Says:

I wonder if they are going to plug this guy inside as a Guard or try him as a Tackle opposite of Wirfs, his profile shouts out versatility but is he a plug and play starter? Seems more likely to plug and play inside than as a tackle…….

  132. Bucamania Says:

As soon as I saw this guy at the senior bowl i knew Licht would be drooling.

  133. Tucker Says:

    Lol

  134. Dooley Says:

If there were every a prospect that looks like a Jason Licht “type-a-guy”, Cody Mauch could give Ali Marpet a run for his $$$. Good get, now get me a safety or nickel CB wth

  135. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    He’ll make a solid guard.

  136. Tucker Says:

Like the bucs draft so far

  137. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @ Dooley

    Lol All day.

  138. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Cody Mauch (High School)

-Finished his career with 1,072 receiving yards and a school-record 24 TDs.
-Set school records for sacks in a season and career
    -Basketball all-conference
-All-region standout State qualifier in track

All around solid athlete. Go ahead young Cody

  139. Paul Wartenberg Says:

doubt they convert Mauch to Guard seeing as we’re overstocked on Guard already. He may fit well at Right Tackle while Wirfs shifts to Left.

  140. Paul Wartenberg Says:

Dammit, Schoonmaker going a lot higher than I thought he would.

  141. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Still concerned about his short arms and his upper body strength though.

  142. Rod Munch Says:

Licht always takes college tackles, always.

    Marpet – tackle
    Cappa – tackle
    Hainsey – tackle
    Luke – tackle
    Cody – tackle

Because they played tackle in college doesn’t mean much for their pro position.

And Cody is almost certainly a guard. Being 305lb with a short wingspan, at tackle, would not be good. He fits in perfectly, however, at guard.

Also, while he did go to a small school, his workout numbers are very good, and he can likely play from day 1 — at guard. H

  143. Paul Wartenberg Says:

Dammit, Safety Brown is off the board. Who’s left at Safety of any value?

  144. Paul Wartenberg Says:

If Mauch isn’t going to go at Tackle, who the hell do we HAVE at Tackle???

  145. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Lions building a solid squad

  146. LUVMYBUCS Says:

There goes all the Hooker Jokes

  147. MadMax Says:

Mauch!!!! Yes!!! I fell asleep and just woke up….

  148. Redd Says:

    Pretty good video on Mauch

  149. Paul Wartenberg Says:

seriously, who’s at OT for the Bucs other than Wirfs???

  150. MadMax Says:

    Mauch! Hahahaha, I love it!

  151. MadMax Says:

I fell asleep and woke up to MAUCH!!! lol, man, what else did I miss…lemme catch up….

  152. Rod Munch Says:

    Just resign Donovan Smith.

Not that it matters, this isn’t Tom Brady they’re protecting, and the Bucs aren’t going to the playoffs.

If they want to try Cody at tackle, then go ahead, you can always move him inside. But that arm span would be very short for a tackle – and he’d likely need at least 10-15 lbs of muscle. Luke would make a more natural NFL tackle with a slightly larger arm span and is heavier, and did just fine in limited snaps at tackle.

  153. MadMax Says:

So Washington and Achane are still there….come on now…..

  154. Dewey Selmon Says:

Will Darnell Washington fall to us?

  155. Paul Wartenberg Says:

Pats not drafting for offense at all the first three rounds. But wasn’t offense their biggest problem last season???

  156. Paul Wartenberg Says:

The word on Darnell Washington is injury concern with a knee. it’s obviously scared the whole draft.

  157. MadMax Says:

    Oh i didnt know

  158. MadMax Says:

    There goes Tucker Kraft

  159. MadMax Says:

Welp, lets get Achane!! maybe Washington in the 5th

  160. Paul Wartenberg Says:

When the Packers are taking Kraft instead of Washington, there is something seriously wrong with Washington. Check the x-rays.

  161. Rod Munch Says:

While I don’t think the Bucs need a TE and I wouldn’t take one, I wouldn’t have minded if they got Tucker Kraft. He could be special, but then again he was playing against a bunch of guys who wouldn’t even get an invite to an XFL tryout, so it’s hard to take much from his film.

  162. Paul Wartenberg Says:

No on running back, let’s stick with White as RB1. We need Safety above all, maybe inside linebacker…

  163. Paul Wartenberg Says:

for Safety, Skinner and Battle both still on the board.

  164. Rod Munch Says:

Daiyan Henley ILB – Brooks / David style undersized LB with tons of quickness, excels in coverage…

  165. Paul Wartenberg Says:

    WE’RE ALMOST ON THE BOARD.

  166. MadMax Says:

    here we go…..

  167. David Says:

    Trenton Simpson LB!!!!!

  168. PNW Buc Says:

    On the clock ⏰

  169. Big Z Says:

    Ringo please

  170. Paul Wartenberg Says:

oof, Titans taking Spears at RB, damn that’s a good pickup.

  171. David Says:

Trenton!! Fast. Explosive. Can cover. Blitz. Tackle.
Should have gone a lot sooner

  172. MadMax Says:

    DE Diaby

  173. David Says:

WOW. That’s an edge rusher. I think JTS days are numbered.

  174. Dooley Says:

Yes!!!!! Holy crap Diaby and Kancey will be a collective shot in the arm for our defensive front

  175. Paul Wartenberg Says:

    BUCS GO GAGA FOR YAYA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    I wanted Safety though.

  176. PNW Buc Says:

    YaYa to you JTS…
    3 picks, 3 starters!!!

  177. Rod Munch Says:

    …another 4-3 DE.

  178. MadMax Says:

didnt even have him on my radar lol, ok….

  179. Mike S Says:

    Wow nice pick

  180. Rod Munch Says:

    You drafted a 4-3 DT, and a 4-3 DE…

    I wonder if there’s a trend here.

  181. All_da_way Says:

    YaYa Diaby is a Buc.

Bucs defensive front seven receiving fortifications.

  182. EA Says:

Beefing up the trenches, I like it.

  183. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Well…either Bowles is getting the majority of picks…or Jason Licht is bringing in a Defensive Head Coach who prefers 4-3 next year.

  184. Rod Munch Says:

    Diaby RAS score, 9.84
    Ranked 23 out of 1614 DE’s since 1987.

Great explosion, elite speed. Wow, ran a 4.51 at 263 pounds, so he could play standing up, but looks to my eye like a classic 4-3 DE.

Regardless, you can’t have enough pass rushers. Dummies saying this means someone else is out, you’re idiots. The team has ZERO depth on the d-line and at edge, you need talent.

Also, defensive lineman and edge rushers generally take at least a year to develop. So you want to have these guy ready for the next coach.

  185. Fansince76 Says:

YaYa Diaby is an excellent pick for edge rusher go Bucs!

  186. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I wonder if one of these defensive guys is meant to replace Lavante David next year?

  187. Bucamania Says:

I like building the trenches. Wish JTS and Hall showed more. Bet these two are better.

  188. Dewey Selmon Says:

    We done until RD 5

  189. Infomeplease Says:

    So far do good!!

  190. Destinjohnny Says:

Does Jason watch any college football??
Dude is so stiff and non instinctive

  191. Steven007 Says:

Yaya looks an awful lot like JPP. Let’s hope he plays like him. Great athleticism.

  192. Steven007 Says:

Destin, chances are Jason watches a lot more college football than you do. He didn’t choose him because he thought he’d be a dud.

  193. Infomeplease Says:

Next a nickel corner, ILB, or TE.

  194. BucsFan81 Says:

Clearly Diva white is staying in Tampa after what we have seen with rounds 1-3. He better get prepared to ride his horse into the den of depression and take his 11 million dollars.

  195. MadMax Says:

    And there went Achane 🙁

  196. Steven007 Says:

    Achane to the Dolphins, ugh.

  197. PNW Buc Says:

YaYa is the starter…JTS is the depth and Shaq is coming off the Achilles. Wonderful pick.

  198. MadMax Says:

    And there goes Simpson…. 🙁

  199. Bucamania Says:

Bleacher Report does think much of YaYa

GRADE: 5.4 (Backup or UDFA with Roster Potential/UDFA)

    OVERALL RANK: 261

    POSITION RANK: EDGE27

    PRO COMPARISON: Victor Dimukeje

  200. Dooley Says:

Diaby can line up inside/out on 4 man fronts, and anchor the edge on 3 man fronts and hold his own. Nice addition to the rotation, but I’m still hoping we can get another pick tonight.

  201. DBS Says:

Destin how many NFL scouting staffs have you been on? Or teams have you been a GM for? I guarantee Licht and his staff know more and have more information on these players than you do.

  202. Tucker Says:

Loved this draft so far they said they wanted more juice from the dline and that’s how they drafted.

Well, im almost out….everyone I was pushing is gone except Washington and CB/S Mekhi Garner…maybe both will be there in the 5th….and surely Washington can heal. I mean he looked great at the combine!

  204. MadMax Says:

Stetson Bennett, almost forgot…with a very late rounder….

I have to say it Good Job Jason Licht!!

  206. MadMax Says:

    And there goes Washington….

  207. Michael Says:

Mauch is the perfect pick at that spot . Why? Because he is a great pulling guard /tackle .Very fast for his size . Licht said we must get faster in the trenches . You can tell by the draft that bucs plan to run the ball a lot more this year . Mauch gets to the 2nd level very good . Bucs scouts said they asked every D-lineman at the combine which tackle gave them the hardest time . They kept getting the same answe over and over . Mauch .
    Good pick .
