Devin White “Very Unhappy”

April 11th, 2023

Bucs ILB Devin White.

Jenna Laine has offered additional details on the trade demand by Bucs Pro Bowl linebacker Devin White.

Per Laine, one of her sources said that White is “very unhappy” in his current situation with the Bucs. Another source told her White is frustrated with the Bucs and “fed up.”

Joe doesn’t want to see White go but Joe thinks it is irresponsible not to thoroughly discuss within the walls of One Buc Palace the merits of granting White his wish. White is not an elite linebacker but has demonstrated he can be perhaps the best linebacker in the game.

His 2020 postseason was extraordinary. Unfortunately, whether you want to argue that White loafs as Warren Sapp claimed, or maybe he’s not used in the right ways, White has not yet reached the level of play he displayed in the run up to the Super Bowl.

One could argue the Bucs don’t win the Super Bowl without White. That’s how dominant of a force he was.

The Bucs need a lot more than just a linebacker right now. Currently, the Bucs have a rehab project at the game’s most important position, quarterback. And on defense, the Bucs sorely lack a dominante man for the most important element of football, the pass rush.

The Bucs cannot get by, if they plan to make any sort of Super Bowl run in the near future, without a quarterback or a pass rusher. The Bucs can get by without an inside linebacker.

Or, perhaps the Bucs could get some sort of package to load up on draft capital and make a run at quarterback Caleb Williams next year (#CollapseForCaleb).

If White is going to play Operation Shutdown and wants out and the Bucs have bigger needs (they do), now is not the time to be stubborn or get lost in a false sense of pride.

    Diva White doing his thang.

  2. sasquatch Says:

And the boob starts Caleb talk. Eff that. We’re talking this year. And no, there will be no tank or collapse. What an ultra-maroon!

  3. D-Rok Says:

He’s mad becuz he wants to be a cowboy but they won’t let him wear his cool cowboy hat…during games.

  4. WillieG Says:

    Trade him to Houston.

  5. Keith Says:

Trade him. Use the extra picks to build for the future. they are not going to the SB this year.

  6. SB~LV Says:

    Diaper change

  7. KingLDavid54 Says:

The contrast between Lavonte David and Devin White couldn’t be sharper

  8. Goatfarmer Says:

Farg him. All the Diva slurpers can have their crow raw. But thanks to his immaturity, he’s put Licht in a difficult spot.

“Oh players love playing for Bloweszo.”

    Yeah.Right.

    Good riddance prima Donna mofo.

  9. LOL Says:

Joe do a poll please! Would love to see what the fans would do

  10. Scott Says:

Lavonte top 3 per PFF.. White #74. Almost last in the league

  11. robert Says:

byproduct of todd bowels. let the man free! even for 12 million he wants out!!!

    think about that!

he knows next year will not be any better. the defense will be on the field for 90% of the snaps and get broken in 1/2.

    think per- Tom Brady.

smart man. his value will only go down…and who wants to hurt on their last contract year?

  12. robert Says:

    pre-tom brady

  13. CBWells Says:

A spectacular 2020 postseason run. I’ll give him that. The rest…….meh. This will make for a great draft. Get his arse outta here. Do work Jason Licht!!!

  14. unbelievable Says:

Has nothing to do with Bowles, IMO.

He wants to be highest paid inside linebacker ever. Bucs don’t have that cash (nor do I believe that they feel his is worth it)

  15. Lord Cornelius Says:

Definitely sucks. Wonder what he wants vs what we are willing to offer.

  16. Joe Swanson Says:

Trade for Lamar Jackson send the Ravens our #1 pick, Devin White and Baker Mayfield for Lamar. I mean two former top 5 first round picks. Re unite Baker and Odell.

  17. Elita Vita Says:

He comes across pompous without the recent stats to back up his ego. Pulling this stunt so near to the draft does not make him beloved to Bucs fans. Let him go…..will become a cancer in the locker room.

  18. Beej Says:

Is his problem contract related or the way the team uses him? Maybe he wants to be the middle in a 43

  19. Joe in Michigan Says:

Trade him. Use the extra picks to build for the future. they are not going to the SB this year.
    ^^^^^^^^
I doubt the Bucs get much for a wildly inconsistent player on the last year of his deal.

  20. Seattle Buc is back in TB Says:

The Bucs won’t be able to resign him even if they wanted to.

  21. Beej Says:

Was reading PFT about this, apparently people outside of Tampa think he’s an all pro

  22. Goatfarmer Says:

I’d love to drink 12 pints of Big Storm and stumble across a poster of Diva on the ground.

  23. Goatfarmer Says:

I never liked him. Not even before the draft when he was prancing around with LSU and bloviating like he was the football version of Muhammad Ali.

  24. Joshua porter Says:

They could resign him money wouldn’t start till next year

  25. Goatfarmer Says:

I am very unhappy. Trade me to the Chiefs!

  26. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

We need a fan poll, to see what people would do with White

  27. Capt.Tim Says:

    Has amazing talent.
Yet despite that, he frequently over runs plays.
He isnt good a holding his gap, again- overactive.
And he is terrible in coverage. TE’s abuse him.
But he does make great plays. Sometimes unbelievable plays.

Combine his immaturity, bad coverage skill, and overrunning plays-
    – we can get a high second round pick for him. And we can find a replacement who may not be as spectacular- but will be better for our defense

  28. Drunkinybor Says:

He’s just not that impactful. He’s wildly inconsistent. If we can trade him for a up and coming linebacker plus draft capitol bye bye. Or draft a linebacker and trade him for draft picks. Sounds good to me.

  29. Leopold Stotch Says:

Wow, “fed up” really? We’re all fed up with his loudmouth and underwhelming production.

  30. Goatfarmer Says:

He’s an emotional pussoi. Loves horses and his boyfriend too (Tom Petty).

Man, I knew it. I knew it.

Bloweszo blows a batch all over the Diva and the Diva thanks him by strapping him to the table for Secretariat to mate with.

  31. Geno711 Says:

White losing a sh** load of money when he moves from Tampa. No one is buying the property and house for what he put into it.

Shows you how internet works. You get one story from Jenna Laine about Devin White requesting a trade and you do a search for Devin White and now you have 80 links to articles about him requesting a trade within 2 hours.

  32. Ranger Walker Says:

The problem is we won’t get enough for him either way

  33. zzbucs Says:

Dont trade this fake star unless you get something decent in return….. What is this of ¨demanding¨a trade???? who is this Joker?? You should control your ego Mr45…..you are far from being a star in this league, you had a good rookie year and your last year was a disgrace……

There is something in the NFL system that needs to change….Whta is this about demmanding a trade? and what if the team can´t get nothing decent in return? We should trade him for nothing because this egomaniac demands it???

  34. Pewter Power Says:

Licht you’ve already witnessed this, djax is a prime example. Do yourself a favor and trade him if not for high draft picks just to rid yourself of the in season drama

  35. Joe Blow Says:

Ship him to Houston for one of their firsts, heck even a second. I like the guy but his inconsistent play is frustrating.

  36. ATLBuc Says:

He seems more arrogant than he is good. Many players have restructured their contracts to help the team but this selfish brat wants more money. Off the plank with him !!!

  37. fred Says:

Send 45 this years 1st and 3rd to the Cards for the #3 pick this yr and take Will Anderson

  38. deroA Says:

If white does play out the year and go get his big payday somewhere the bucs are likely getting a 3rd or 4th round Comp pick. If ya trade the guy It should at the very least be for a 2nd or a 3rd/5th combo.

  39. JN Says:

Grant him his wish especially if he doesnt want to be here but the price has to be right. He probably wants more $$$ and a new contract.

  40. Jeebs the Honey Bear Says:

I would accept a sack of nickels for him. Most overrated player in the NFL. Instead of getting nothing in return and having to either pay him an exorbitant amount or have him walk away, we can get a lovely sack of nickels. Do. Not. Re-sign.

  41. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Go get us at least our missing 2023 4th round pick for this clown show Jason!

  42. Dooley Says:

    @Josh Porter

Exactly, Whites looking to cash out while the rest of the league is trying to carry as much cap overage into 2024 as possible. Bad timing for the Bucs front office, but even worse negotiating and application of patience on Whites’(and his reps) part. No team is looking to take in his $11.7M cap hit and most teams are looking to carry their respective cap overage into 2024

  43. Elita Vita Says:

The timing of this by Devin White is purely classless. It feels like he’s holding the Bucs (and Bucs fans) hostage. Upsetting the Bucs plans regarding the draft. Do you really want a man of this character on this team?

  44. bucnjim Says:

Just like in the real world if an employee wants out see ya! Good luck in your next endeavor. Be very careful though with how you see yourself and how others see you.

  45. Richard Says:

Talent, yes…athletic talent…unbelievable play…perhaps a couple in his 4 years here and all in the first couple. He was pathetic last season and is obviously not a team player. He wants a contract like Roquan….he couldn’t carry Roquans jock. Joe says ” he could be the best LB in the game”….you’ve had way too many drafts at the brewery Joe. Bud Lyght should have traded him much earlier and let him be someone else’s problem. He doesn’t deserve the contract he has now, never mind the $100 million…..

  46. David Jones Says:

I’d want out too with that coaching staff.

  47. Redeemer Says:

Bowles and white have been clashing for a while now. His undisciplined play and near total reliance on his athleticism is the problem. I suspect he will be traded at the draft. This is one area I agree with Bowles. White is supremely talented. If he’d just stay in his gap, instead of trying to run down plays from behind, he would be a game changer.

  48. IE Buc Says:

We could have kept SMB and maybe Edwards too if we would have unloaded this malcontent with his lousy season. Please trade 45 away.

  49. Jimbucsfan Says:

Let him go. Not the best linebacker on the team let alone the league. Team needs a lot of help. Sorry to see ya go but facts are facts.

  50. Oxycondoms Says:

Dont understand the contract part of his complaint. Anyone care to chime in ? He wants to be renewed this year is that why he wants to leave? That probably wont happen with any team bucs trade him to he will have to suck it up

  51. SlyPirate Says:

Oxycondoms … I’m with you on this. I’m guessing his agent and Licht explained the Bucs’ cap position. This isn’t the year to ask the Bucs for a new contract.

  52. 80forBrady Says:

No discipline. Unleashed. A real “Cowboy” on the field. Uncoachable.

Wants to be the hero instead of covering his space on the football field.

When Warren Sapp called him out last year and said the Captain’s “C” should be stripped from his uniform because of his lack of effort, lack of focus, taking plays off on the field and inability to be a team player, you know there s a problem.
Sapp, Brooks, Lynch, Ronde all know what it takes to be the best at their craft.

Without LaVonte David playing next to him to cover up a lot of his mistakes, his wild style of play will become more exposed.

  53. Voice of Truth Says:

He is soooooooo overrated. The Super Bowl is ancient history – he is getting worse rather than better

And he has always had the diva tendency

thanks “Captain” for understanding your team loves you but they are screwed financially right now

buckle up butter cup and go earn your next deal

  54. Fun Guy Says:

    Goodbye, Francis.

  55. Gman Says:

    Dear Devin:

    Go f yourself.

    Sincerely, Bucs Fans

  56. SlyPirate Says:

A 2nd and 4th for White would be AWESOME!

MIKE isn’t a premier position in the NFL. It’s a do-it-all LB who can cover TEs, hit a gap, occasionally blitz, and spy a running QB. You need a little size, speed, and IQ.

Shelton Quarles was undrafted and manned the middle, like a boss, for more than a decade.

    Reload the trenches.

  57. Bill in Seminole Says:

According to SportsTrac, he is in his last contract year – will be a free agent next year. His cap hit for 2023 is $11.7 million. He’s a good player but $11.7 million?

  58. D-Rome Says:

    Capt. Tim,

I always appreciate your measured, well thought out comments. I think you are correct in all your points above.

  59. Goatfarmer Says:

Next season the Bucs kicker should wear #45.

Eff off Diva, you festering heap of parrot droppings.

  60. BucsFanSince1996 Says:

Trade him for a left tackle and some draft picks.

  61. Bnasty Says:

Maybe him and our first rounder for Lamar? I know we’re tight on the cap but once the Brady money is gone we will be in a bit better shape?

  62. Cobraboy Says:

In White’s world, there is an “I” in “team.”

  63. Goatfarmer Says:

His “draft me now cause I’m a $100 million player” was the red flag of all red flags. JL kind of humped the horse on this one.

  64. JeffreyLane77 Says:

Maybe he’s pulling an Aaron Rodgers. Remember when Rodgers was disgruntled with Greenbay he requested a trade.
Greenbay tried to make him happy and gave him that huge contract with $58 due this year. Devon is saying trade me or give me a new contract. It’s a negotiation ploy. I say start shopping him. Dudes always over pursuing and sucks at pass overage.

  65. JBBUCS_06 Says:

He has no respect for Faker Mayfield. Not getting paid the same as Carlton or Dean. I say if we get a great deal, let him go. Otherwise call his bluff.

  66. Cobraboy Says:

White is a more talented Kwon Alexander. Like Alexander, White never gave me the impression of being the brightest bulb in the pack. His athleticism made up for slow mental processing.

    Kinda the un-John Lynch.

  67. Cobraboy Says:

Rumor needs to leak that the Deadskins are interested.

  68. Vancouver Buc Says:

Saddle up and hit the trail. Thanks for the SB effort, now just go.

  69. LUVMYBUCS Says:

LB/DE Montez Sweat for LB Devin White – Make It Happen!

  70. Tucker Says:

Find it kind of funny that people think the ravens would want white. For Lamar? Lol now that’s delusional and even after that lunacy bucs still can’t afford lamar and his guaranteed money demands anyhow.

  71. Nate Says:

If he’s not happy then give him what he want I’d take a 2nd and 4th rounder

  72. Buc4evr Says:

Trade him . He is not as good as he thinks he is.

  73. The Beer Whisperer Says:

I think Devin White is good a LB, but he is dumb as a rock.

Just imagine, going to college and being that dumb.

  74. Destinjohnny Says:

We know who D White is. He has gotten lazy.
We need him to make the ordinary play
He has crazy athletic ability but lacks in instincts.
Wish we could morph him and 54 into one player.

  75. LakelandSteve Says:

Let’s trade him and get something out of him. If you make him stay here this year can you imagine how “bored” he would be. Let him go, he is not the player we thought he would be after the Super Bowl.

  76. J Says:

Let him go. Let’s see how well he does without LVD telling him where to be.

  77. Defense Rules Says:

Kinda wondering what team would trade for an vocal, dissatisfied team captain making $11 mil on a 5th year contract. White knows full well that the Bucs are in no position salary-CAP-wise to be paying him $20 mil a year. He also knows that he’s gone next year.

  78. bucs107 Says:

Sources say frustrated and fed up!!!!
    He getting 11 million lol
This is a money grab I want to see him without David
These reporters did he say it publicly?

  79. BelleGladeBuc Says:

Pro Football Focus ratings and grades of the top 3 Linebackers in 2022:

    Bobby Wagner = 90.7 = A
    Fred Warner = 85.7 = A
    Lavonte David = 85.1 = A

And then you have the great diva, legend in his own mind, superstar, wants to be a $100 million highest paid linebacker as he rides his pony Devin White:

    Devin White = 45.7 = F

No hate from me or PFF, just facts and data.

  80. J Says:

“While he rides his pony”…LOL!!! That’s funny.

  81. Eckwood Says:

I don’t agree with the great athletic ability thing !! Below avg hands, poor change of direction , slightly heavy feet, non nimble in coverage, poor tackler unless working straight line speed .

  82. bob in valrico Says:

LVD unselfishly takes a 5 million paycut. No way White is worth meeting his demands. He has a long way to go to live up to his own hype. His main skill is getting to the QB but he didn’t break down, wrap up or finish the play enough last year. He is yet to prove that he could play in another system where d lineman are not tasked with
    eating up blocks for him.
So far has not shown he can cover as well as the better all round LB’s in the game.

  83. Mikey Says:

    Devin knows Mayfield blows.

  84. Mike Johnson Says:

Kinda hate Devin has chosen this route. He should have just kept his mouth shut. Balled out this year and place himself in a great negotiation spot for 2024. Now all the haters and fans are gonna be on him all year long. The squeaky wheel will get lots of oil and then some this season. Bowles and Licht are not gonna trade him.

  85. GenocideD Says:

Glad he’s doing this before the draft…. I knew I should’ve bought a vita jersey and not white. F!

  86. Old Sombrero Says:

I believe it was Mike Tomlin who said ‘I don’t want hostages. I want willing participants”. Trade him for a willing participant or future picks.

  87. Cobraboy Says:

He knows he needs to play next season like his hair is on fire if he wants the massive contract he thinks he deserves.

  88. Usfbuc Says:

Should have moved him as soon as they knew they weren’t going to pay him

  89. Cobraboy Says:

@USF: they will pay him, just not what he thinks he is worth.

  90. Arn Platz Says:

Trade him to the Texans for draft picks. That’ll show the Diva. I agree with Sapp.

  91. Trask To The Future Says:

Now is the PERFECT time to trade him. Deal him for a 2nd rounder and be done.

  92. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

I totally agree. Let’s get rid of all our studs, then we can run that lawn chair defense and let’s see where that gets us🤡

  93. Crickett Baker Says:

The fact that he is “fed up” means something other than money or a contract to me, though I don’t know what. How can we keep him if he wants to go so badly? He just handed Jason a crapload of more work, too. He makes me mad.

  94. Cobraboy Says:

How about White and a #1 for the kitties #1?

  95. steele Says:

What’s he unhappy about? If it’s anything besides having to play under Todd Bowles, then let him go. Right now. Overrated.

  96. For the People Says:

Trade a horse, ride a rookie

  97. BucsFan1328 Says:

If we can add an early 2nd for him. Trade him. Keeping Winfield next offseason is more important imo and White doesn’t deserve the type of contract he’s after

  98. ghost Says:

would rather back up the brinks truck for deuces winfield next year, bye diva

  99. Rob Says:

White said the day he was drafted that he wanted to be the highest paid linebacker in the NFL. Played one season (2020) like he may deserve it. It’s clearly all about the money to White and I guess 11.7 million for playing this year was just insulting to him. I’m insulted he was set to make that much when he clearly gave up and loafed multiple times this past year. Trade him to division rival like Atlanta so we can run over him. He doesn’t have the heart that we need as a team leader. Bye! I’ll put your jersey next to the Alvin Harper jersey my sister got me one Christmas that I thought was a gag gift. I threw it away and asked if she got a great deal on it. She said it was on sale lol.

  100. Goatfarmer Says:

I’ve never felt such disdain for a Bucs player. Well, maybe Alvin Harper.

  101. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

Trade him. Cut bait. Overrated player.

  102. Aleyz2020 Says:

Send him packing to somewhere nice and cold so he can freeze his ass off and only dream of the days of sunny beaches!!! It’s all about the money these days, no dedication. Well, what have you done for us lately? Not a damn thing!

  103. Goatfarmer Says:

Pretty unanimous consensus – dump the dud.

Of course Bloweszo’s over the top gushing about him has nothing to do with this, because, you know, negotiating leverage and all.

  104. garro Says:

    Maybe he is just bored!

  105. PassingThru Says:

Very Unhappy = End of Rookie Contract + No Inflated Renewal Offer

Trade him, he topped out during the Super Bowl run. Disappears too often, whether it’s a poor read, lack of effort, or trouble shedding blocks. Just don’t expect much in return in trade value.

  106. JEZ Says:

MLB/ ILB are not as valued as they were before. They are like the RB of the defense, can probably get by with an athlete at that position with studs up front and at DE/OLB that can eat up blocks for the LBs and pressure on the QB so DBS look better than what they are

  107. RuKa_44 Says:

Joe, why we continue to talk about potential to dominate?
In 4 years he demonstrated that “potential” in just 3 games, the 2020 playoffs. We should not even talk about potential, because that was more a flash in the pan. For all we know, so far those games are the exception and mediocre to sub-par play is the norm.
As one of the Joes say, potential means nothing! Enough of talking so highly of this guy just because he was a top5 draft pick and had 3 fantastic games on his 4 year career…
