Arm Length Question Emerges

April 28th, 2023

Does the rookie come up too short to the guy he might replace?

So new Buccaneers rookie tackle/guard Cody Mauch is not only short on teeth, but he’s also missing what could be critical centimeters from his arms.

Joe wrote weeks ago about how former Bears personnel executive Greg Gabriel was barking on social media about how there are only two offensive tackles in the NFL playing with arms shorter than 33 inches.

Mauch’s arms measured 32 3/8 inches.

This subject arose earlier this year when Bucs rookie guard Luke Goedeke started at right tackle in Week 18. He has 32 1/4-inch arms.

Donovan Smith’s arms were 34 3/8 inches, and he was damn good at using them.

Length isn’t everything, but it does matter at tackle. It’s sort of similar to height at cornerback, and Todd Bowles loves his corners long.

So does this mean they are going to plug Mauch in at guard?

  2. Goatfarmer Says:

Donovan was an all pro holding penalty using those long arms. Best holder in the league – yes.

I’m more worried about Mauch’s deviated sphincter than his short arms.

  3. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Most draft boards list Cody as a guard even though he spent most of his time at Left Tackle.

  5. Rand Says:

They did introduce him as a guard

  6. Rand Says:

They’ll teach him to play center

  7. Goatfarmer Says:

He big. He ugly. He toofess. He strong.

Smart and fast? Not so much. But, so what. Love it.

  8. Kgh4life Says:

    Sounds Iike another Goedeke

  9. Durango95 Says:

Like the player just don’t see IOL as a pressing need. First two picks are kind of head scratchers.

  10. Buc4evr Says:

    Guard. OT as a backup.

  11. Cometowin2 Says:

Best avail Offensive Lineman when they picked. Based on Licht’s record, think he’ll be just fine wherever he plays. Glad we didn’t teach for one at 19.

  12. Buccos Says:

I don’t know this player at all but I already like him better than Donovan Smith

  13. ModHairKen Says:

    That’s an overrated criterion

  14. Rod Munch Says:

I pointed this out earlier, but I don’t know if it’s his arm length that is the big concern, it’s slightly lower than what you’d want, but his arm SPAN is quite short. For example, his arm length is, I believe, slightly longer than Luke, but his arm span is nearly 2 inches shorter (by memory, don’t hold me to that).

Again, Licht knows more about this than I ever will, but looking at his size, weight, playing style, he looks like a classic Licht style guard to me.

  15. sasquatch Says:

He might be a RT for us, or another guard. Perhaps our future center.

  16. Voice of Truth Says:

He is a LG and that is okay – Goedke to RT, Wirfs to LT – Jensen C Mauch LG and about 4 people battling for RG – Hainsey/Stinnie/Leverett/new dude forgot his name, 5-6 year starter for 2 different teams – plenty of depth and flexibility

The OLine, and DLine with the new kid from Louisville as edge/ 5 tech to go with Kancey are looking a whole lot better today

Well done Jason!! Build the trenches!!!!

  17. Capt.Tim Says:

I think he will be a very good Guard.
Raw, but the Bucs can coach up linemen.
But those arms will keep him on the inside.

  18. AnonymousBuc76 Says:

    Footwork < Reach

  19. Fishhawkbuc Says:

No worries. My ole lady was worried about my length until she felt the girth

  20. Coburn Says:

    Lmao fishhawk

  21. Rod Munch Says:

Fishhawkbuc – Sorry, bruh, but that’s not what she told me.

  22. My Momma Says:

    My Momma agrees with AnonymousBuc76.

    Footwork < Reach

His footwork is atrocious. It'll take a year or two to get him ready. He doesn't meet an immediate need.

  23. Geno711 Says:

STRENGTHS: Superb athletic tools … natural foot quickness and balance from Dane Brugler.

  24. Goatfarmer Says:

    Fishhawk and Rod –

Both great Americans. Anyone that makes me moisten the chair twice in one thread deserves the accolades.

  25. Geno711 Says:

A smooth athlete with terrific mobility and footwork, staying light on his feet. Has the lateral range, natural shuffle movements, and lower body quickness to mirror speed rushers.
He’s especially light on his feet, a fluid mover who has natural balance as Mauch kick-slides and sets.

    from NFLDraftBuzz

  26. Geno711 Says:

Mauch’s movement ability pops. He’s an energetic short-area blocker and lateral mover who’s extremely quick out of his sets and fleet-footed when matching rushers. Meanwhile, in space, Mauch is an explosive athlete who gains ground upfield quickly off the line and brings exceptional range as a moving blocker.

Mauch has the high-end explosiveness to overtake the 4i as a moving blocker and seal out, and he reaches the second level incredibly quickly when flowing through open lanes. Meanwhile, in pass protection, Mauch shows off scary recovery athleticism and corrective twitch after contact.

    From Profootballl Network.

There seems to be some NFL talent scouts that disagree with @My Momma that his footwork is atrocious.

  27. Goatfarmer Says:

    Geno…

β€œ a fluid mover who has natural balance β€œ

    Kay Adams?

  28. Delusional Intelligence Says:

So this must mean Cody ‘Trench Mouth’ Mauch is going to play center.

  29. garro Says:

    Loving the Toothless Ginger!
Watched his Senior Bowl tape. Didn’t really lose a rep that i noticed. Quick feet, tenacious. A good fit for the zone blocking we will be doing from his tape at ND State. Gets on the second level guys quickly and finishes well.

  30. DislocatedBucsFan Says:

Agreed Joe. His 34” arms really enabled him to perfect the holding technique and demonstrated false effort as he was best by nearly every speed rusher in the NFL.

He’s garbage, move on. That’s why he is 29 y/o LT who’s trackless. If the boy can move his feet he’ll be fine at tackle.

im curious to hear what marpets and cappas were?
    maybe some journalism please?

  32. Bojim Says:

When did the buzz words ‘short arms’ become a thing?

  33. CrackerBall Says:

“I don’t know this player at all but I already like him better than Donovan Smith”
    Amen to that, brother
