Todd Bowles: Antoine Winfield Is Simply “Outstanding”

March 2nd, 2023

Praise from head coach.

In four months, former Bucs great Rondé Barber will be wearing a gold jacket and officially have his bust in Canton.

One thing that made Barber great was his smarts

Now Joe isn’t trying to say Antoine Winfield is the next Rondé Barber. Ease up. However, Joe has mentioned how when Winfield blitzes it’s reminiscent of Barber. On Tuesday, Bucs coach Todd Bowles praised an element of Winfield’s game that was a hallmark of Barber: his smarts.

“He gets better mentally every year,” Bowles said. “His tackling is outstanding, his intensity is outstanding, what he does for the team is outstanding.

“I think he’s one of our top three defensive players. He can only get better with experience, you know?”

Last year Bowles tried to turn Winfield into another Barber-like player by often putting him at nickel corner. It seems Bowles thinks he was doing Winfield a disservice.

“I don’t want to move him around as much this coming season than I have [in 2022] – I’ll try to leave him at one spot as best as I can,” Bowles said. “I think he’ll master that spot and get even better for us.”

Now Bowles did not say what that “one spot” is. Is it safety? Is it nickel?

The way Joe looks at it, Winfield will be strong no matter where you play him. He’s just damn good.

Joe, I’m not the grammar cops, but saying “be can only get better with experience?” Is an insult. WTF is up with the question mark ?

  2. BucsfanFred Says:

Winfield and Wirfs are a huge reason we have to correct our salary cap fiasco. No question marks, but I would accept an exclamation point!!!

  3. sasquatch Says:

He had 2 concussions this year. That’s concerning.

  4. SOEbuc Says:

He’s so good getting to the QB. A banger all over the field. Love to see him in the nickel. Resign Logan Ryan to a one year. Or let him be our DB coach.

  5. Rod Munch Says:

Winfield is the best player on defense. He’s a super smart player, excellent tackler, can rush the passer, and is excellent in coverage. He’s well on his way to being the next Ronde Barber.

  6. Goatfarmer Says:

Whatever Bloweszo does will fail, unless maybe Winfield does the opposite.

  7. Stanglassman Says:

Winfield had ONE (wk. 8) concussion this year. It would be concerning if he really did have two.

You maybe thinking of Brate (wk. 4) or Z. McCollum (wk. 10).

Winfield was out for 2 games with a grade 1 concussion and had a foot injury late in the year.

Great safety and a very good nickel. Hopefully Bowles knows this and keeps him at safety this year.

  8. Joe in Michigan Says:

This is one of the many reasons I don’t want the Bucs to tank…Tanking pisses off Winfield (which it SHOULD), he leaves in free agency to wherever Bowles goes as a Defensive Coordinator.

  9. Cobraboy Says:

Good thing Barber didn’t have Bowles as his coach. He’d be either a corner or nickel, period, and thusly no HoF.

Barber’s diversity and unpredictability was the trait that made Barber excellent, the same as Winfield.

This team will go nowhere with Bowles as HC. He’s Radio Morris without the Youngry.

  10. Cobraboy Says:

Even Ira couldn’t get him into the Hall if Bowles were Barber’s coach.

Good, it sounded good last summer and Winfield made it look good in a handful of games, but looked as if he was being spread too thin in my opinion. Let him stay back and roll him between FS & SS like ’20 & ’21.

  12. Aceofaerospace Says:

After his rookie season, Nate Burelson did predict he was the one rookie that year that he predicted would one day be in the Hall of Fame, for what it’s worth.

  13. Tampabaybucfan Says:

He’s a top 3 player on defense……a top two player on defense and the top player on defense……

    One of Licht’s few 2nd round winners…..

best tackler on the team. David is probably a close 2nd. then a big drop off.

Devin White go watch your teammates film this offseason and learn to tackle like them. Stop tackling high and learn from these guys. Lets go. You’ll be in the pro bowl.
