John Harbaugh Opens Up On Dave Canales

March 1st, 2023

Here at the NFL Scouting Combine, Joe’s been fishing for insight into new Bucs offensive coordinator Dave Canales.

So Joe asked a guy that interviewed him twice this year.

That man is Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh. Canales earned a second interview from Harbaugh during the Ravens’ process that included 14 candidates. So getting that second call was impressive for Canales, who has no experience calling plays.

“Dave was a guy that we didn’t know anything about,” Harbaugh begain. “We talked to Coach [Pete] Carroll about David and Coach Carroll really just gave a great recommendation in terms of who he was. And I would say [he] was all that Coach Carroll said and more. He’s a great guy, a very likeable guy, a strong faith person. But man, his command of the offense, not just the offense they ran in Seattle, but the new one [and] the one they’ve run the last 10 years, and has ability to deal with quarterbacks was just off the charts. He’s going to do a good job.”

Joe’s heard was warmed hearing Harbaugh say Canales is “off the charts” when it comes to prepping quarterbacks. The Bucs certainly are going to need that skill set.

Did you expect him to say he sucked?

  2. Dooley Says:

Type Canales’ name into youtube and add “culture” into the search field and you’ll get a vid from a few years back that’s probably as close to what should be expecting from Canales in this new role as our OC. At least I thought it was interesting, you would think by his demeanor and the tidbits of his football IQ he shares, that Canales was being indirectly groomed for this job after spending over a decade on Carrolls’ staff.

  3. PSL Bob Says:

After repeatedly knocking our collective heads against the wall from some of the most dumbass play calling ever witnessed under Leftwich, it will be refreshing to see someone call plays who is not only aware of situational football but also understands mismatches in defensive coverage. Let’s hope the results sync with my expectations.

  4. SB Says:

Hopefully we found that ‘diamond in the rough’

  5. Redeemer Says:

Only hope he understands situational football. Whoever the QB is, a running game will be imperative. It’s back to basics for the bucs.

  6. Craig Says:

So why didn’t Harbaugh hire him?

I know every plan looks good until you get punched in the face, so can Canales consistently recover from the punch that the NFL is, or is just a likeable, religious guy with lots of plans.

Keep the liquor cabinet stocked, cuz we are going to find out; unless Harbaugh wants to trade and we can have Monken.

  7. Kgh4life Says:

Getting a second interview from the Ravens, one of the better organizations in the NFL, is quiet impressive.

  8. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Because the Crows knew they were going to win Monken lottery.

  9. Redeemer Says:

Opine. Could’ve been an 11 win team with a good play caller. No Superbowl, but at least we wouldn’t have been embarrassed by the cowboys.

  10. HC Grover Says:

I think so too. ABB anybody but Bowles.

  11. IE Buc Says:

Harbaugh probably would have hired Canales if hadn’t gotten Monken.

Monken was the best OC candidate available. Monken is an offensive mastermind, with experience and HC material. Just lead Georgia to back to back championships. Monken was the get. It was reported Monken turned down the Bucs and several teams to take the Ravens position. Best OC position available.

Canales as a young up and comer would have been Harbaugh’s second choice. He landed with the Bucs after Monken and Pitcher turned the Bucs down.

  12. HC Grover Says:

Can he devise a “friendly’ offense for Bowles” Oh Happy Days.

  13. Voice of Truth Says:

If nothing else, it will be a new scheme no one has seen in total and we can use it to our advantage for half a season or so

Being the 3rd choice behind 2 experienced veterans isn’t a bad thing really – he will be hungrier

Monken messed up – he could have been the next HC here

  14. The Beer Whisperer Says:

Dave Canales was so impressive, the Ravens passed on hiring him?

  15. Letsbucinggo Says:

Now if we only had a quarterback for him to groom!

  16. The Beer Whisperer Says:

We’ll be wanting to run the QB coach outta town, by week 5.
He’ll make Byron Leftwich, look like Vince Lombardi.

  17. Mike Johnson Says:

All the praises and hi-fives are being enjoyed by Canales right now. I just hope he is ready. Its like my man Mike Tyson says, Everybody got a great plan…until they get hit.

  18. The Beer Whisperer Says:

Whenever I’m looking for a good Offensive Coordinator, I hire a QB coach.

Maybe, that’s why I don’t work in football?

Todd Bowles, shoring up his unemployment benefits?

  19. D-Rok Says:

Glad he didn’t open up a can of whoop @ss on Canales. That would be bad, ummmkayyy.

By all accounts, our new OC is like a shiny new toy under the Christmas tree.

Let’s hope by about week 8 he is still shiny, new, and we still want to play with him.

I will patiently wait and let his performance dictate his value. Gotta be better than we do what we do, if you feelin’ me.

  20. tampabuscsbro Says:

A defensive HC unless it’s Tomlin or belicheat as he is called here is not good in the modern game.

If you have a good OC that covers for him he gets hired to be another teams HC.

  21. CrackWise Says:

I remember when, I never had job, so I was thankful I got offered one washing dishes. I remember when I wanted to be a cook, I got a job as a cook, I remember when I wanted to be a manager, I got one. I remember when I wanted to be an engineer, I got an opportunity to be one, I remember when I wanted to be business owner, I am still working on that.

Bottom line is, who are you to say someone who has never done something cant do it and do it well?

Experience is an acquired thing. Of course, not everyone knows that.

Command of an offense when he didn’t even call the plays?!?!!!

    Who is believing this BS?

  23. Superd950 Says:

    Hey Joe
I’m a longtime fan of the site who lives in Indy.
I’m headed to the combine on Sunday I’d love to meet up if you have time to connect.
    Let me know,

Do you have a misunderstanding of the word “command”?

Do you have command of the English language?

Why is the default response to call it BS?

  25. CrackWise Says:

    Hey Jack,

If you have ever been in a meaningful relationship, then you know, its not always who where’s the pants that commands the relationship.

    Just Saying 😉

  26. SOEbuc Says:

    Monken Lottery???

Back to back 5-11 with Bucs. People are idiots. This isn’t college ball at UGA where you have all the best recruits and coaches in the country. Overrated like a MoFo like any other college coach coming into the NFL, except we’ve seen his NFL resume as OC.

He was only the playcaller for one of the seasons. Also, offense wasn’t the problem when Koetter was coach. The poor records fell squarely on the defense and on the INT prone Jay-Miss. Mark it down, he’ll be up for HC jobs in the next couple years when he succeeds with the Ravens.

Apparently don’t even know what gaslighting means.

  32. Rod Munch Says:

If he’s such a great, young coach, why didn’t Seattle promote him? He’s been stuck as a 3rd tier coach for 13-years, and over the last three went from QB coach, to passing game coordinator, then demoted back to QB coach. When a guy like that has a head coach talking about how awesome that guy is, it says to me they’re hoping someone takes a problem off their hands. Hopefully I’m wrong, and who knows, maybe everything I’m writing is just to create some drama because there’s nothing else going on. Or, perhaps, I really mean it. But I do know the first play of the season is going to be a run up the middle, and when that happens, and they get 0.3 yards, I’m going to yell and scream, that much is for certain.

  33. Keimosabe Says:

It’s not like he’s gonna tell the media he sucks, come on. Take it with a grain of salt

  34. Keimosabe Says:

Not saying he does suck, just for clarification, just saying know one is going to trash the guy in the media. Ask off the record and you’ll likely get a more honest answer but then obviously you couldn’t print that

  35. sasquatch Says:

^ Well, Harbaugh did interview him twice. So he must’ve seen something in him.
