Baker Mayfield Says His Strength Is Leadership

March 20th, 2023

New Bucs QB Baker Mayfield.

Let the competition begin!

New Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield will compete with Kyle Trask for the Tampa Bay starting job.

Today, Mayfield said he’s yet to be in touch with Trask. Joe found that slightly odd since the quarterback community is so friendly and players always seem to reach out to each other. Joe guesses Trask didn’t ask general manager Jason Licht for Mayfield’s cell number — and vice versa.

Regardless, Mayfield said that now that his contract was inked today, he’s fired up to get to work. And what does Mayfield say he does best as a quarterback? He takes charge.

“That’s being a good leader, being infectious, energetic, and even when I’m not playing, helping guys out,” Mayfield said.

Bring on the competition, Mayfield added, because competition makes players better. “I want to compete and I want to win,” he said.

    BAKERNEERS

  2. Redeemer Says:

Its not a competition Joe, you know that. He was brought here to be the starter. As for his leadership skills, I think baker is confusing that with arrogance. Hopefully he’s been humbled by the last two years. God forbid Trask actually does beat him out. He’ll bitch and moan until he gets in there.

  3. Letsbucinggo Says:

Talks good I am sure he will beat out Trask, but that doesn’t a lot of effort Gabberr did also.

  4. Buc4evr Says:

    Talk is cheap…

  5. Parrishbucsfan Says:

    I wanna get baked!!!!

  6. Marine Buc Says:

Darn… I was hoping he was gonna say – “My greatest strength is throwing TD passes”…

    Oh well.

I guess leadership is important as well.

  7. DingleBerry Says:

Yeah he was such a great leader that all of his Browns teammates were happy to see him go.

  8. SB~LV Says:

Sharing his best with his 4th team now

  9. TampabayDJ82 Says:

Better than Winsterception !! And as someone above already posted , talks cheap and that goes for us fans as well. Go Bucs

  10. Just Leave Trask Alone Says:

Baker is going up against the yardage and TD record holder of the Florida Gators – the hometown team.

He’s not walking in here like it’s his job day 1. He needs to convincingly win this job.

  11. UKBuccaneer Says:

It’s Baker’s job to lose, and rightly so. The bucs have have 2 years+ to evaluate Trask, it’s clear that he’s not starter material.

  12. deuceswild78 Says:

how is he better than winston… maturity wise and turnover wise they are the same guy… career back ups. This is his last chance, because we have the weapons when healthy.

  13. DG060 Says:

It’s gonna be a long long season. Bowles and Baker. Yeah. That’s the ticket.

  14. Just Leave Trask Alone Says:

    LOL LEADERSHIP!!!

  15. Just Leave Trask Alone Says:

    Bakers job to lose!

    Hahahahahahahaha

After the deuce he dropped last season!

  16. Mike Johnson Says:

Seems like he wants the job and is eager to perform. I am pulling for him despite some reservations. Go get’um Baker!!!

  17. Parrishbucsfan Says:

Can’t we all just get Baked along. And

  18. Buc50 Says:

Looking at the difference between Jameis and Baker and you can see that except for the interceptions, Winston is better in every way.

  19. K_bassuka Says:

    🤣 Baker Mayfield is delusional!

  20. UKBuccaneer Says:

Jameis without the interceptions would still be leading this team. That’s the point.

  21. Goatfarmer Says:

Whelp – if Trashk were the man Trevor Semien would have been signed instead of a guy who took the Browns, the leagues greatest dumpster fire, to the playoffs and damn near beat KC in their crib. Or there’s a boy who stares at his primary for 3 seconds before flailing it off to his secondary. Forget third read and think Winstonesque interceptions because he will throw it right to the defender’s chest, as he did three times in his famed “signature win”’ in the second half against Georgia when he hit three Georgia defenders in the chest for would be pick sixes. Fortunately for Trashk they couldn’t catch. Watch the game on YouTube.

  22. Darin Says:

Lol. My strength is my leadership. Said no true leader ever. Actions not words kiddo.

  23. Rod Munch Says:

Leadership? Talk about a BS talking point that means nothing.

Also the team just had Tom Brady and it’s a veteran group, they don’t need Baker Mayfield leading them, they just need him to throw the ball and put it close enough so the receivers can catch it.

  24. Allbuccedup Says:

4 teams in nine months makes you wonder this could be the turning point of his career good or bad.

  25. Infomeplease Says:

The Bucs will be fine at QB !!

  26. Goatfarmer Says:

Someone has to provide the energy that Bloweszo sucks out of his players on game day.

Check out what Brady said before the Germany Seahawks game.

That was aimed at Bloweszo – poor effort on game days.

  27. Pryda…Sec147 Says:

Trask I swear to god you better compete and not roll over for baker freakin mayfield ffs

  28. Bucs Guy Says:

I question his leadership skills. He hasn’t shown very good leadership in the past.

  29. View from 132 Says:

Dude looks a lot like a young Kurt Warner. At least in street clothes.

  30. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I don’t buy it. And this ‘Get Baked’ crap is going to get old real quick. Especially if it goes to his head.

The dude has failed everywhere he has gone…and that’s saying a LOT considering how many places he has played.

We either win with Trask, or we don’t win at all. That’s just my opinion.

  31. Goatfarmer Says:

Is making the playoffs and a playoff win with a dumpster fire team considered a failure? He was / is a young guy. No slack for that?

Trask will be in the insurance business once his rookie contract expires. The fear of giving him the ball under fire is due to his performance on the field in friendly conditions. The organization has spoken.

C’mon Bonz. You’re better than this.

  32. Mark Says:

    I’m pulling for Trask

  33. Show Me the TDs Says:

I don’t like that answer. You don’t call yourself a leader. You lead, and others anoint you as a good leader…or not. It’s like giving yourself a nickname. Baker always seemed like a punk, to me. I graduated from Embry Riddle night school, so no Gator loyalty for me, but I’m pulling hard for Trask.

  34. DingleBerry Says:

Goatfarner… We’ve been over this. Baker getting carried but the Browns running game and defense on a stacked team isn’t a reason to be optimistic.

  35. ABucAway Says:

Ummm, no, it’s really not Baker. Hehe, it’s cool though. We don’t need that from you. We have that from Jensen and Wirfs and Evans . We need you to get pissed at yourself and use that as a launch pad to become the quarterback that won the Heisman. After last year’s lackluster showing, some here think you are only capable of being Trasks’ cabana boi. Others think you can overcome yourself and rise to the occasion. That’d be a good strength

  36. David Says:

He says he is a good leader. LOL
Forget his poor plays. That is one important component which he does not have as a qb. He hasn’t even contacted Trask yet while is waiting for Trask to call him. That is what I call poor leader. Terrible start.

  37. Oneilbuc Says:

Goatformer lol 🤣🤣🤣 is a anti Kyle Trask guy you really think Baker Mayfield is going to ball . You are happy we snig a quarterback that’s been cut by 3 different teams and he’s on his 4th team in 6 years lol 🤣🤣?

  38. Goatfarmer Says:

Osqueel you stick to one narrative that suits you without reading. Maybe you should have your device read the words to you. Try these:

    1. Name the 9 wins the Bucs defense secured during an 8 win season.
    2. Who is “y’all?”
    3. Baker sucks too. But apparently, the people that matter, the ones who work for the Bucs, think having Baker improves the team — and after watching Trask for two years, aren’t finished adding competition at the position.

Unless you’ve been on the field and have a different evaluation based on daily observation, then all you have are college stats which are as good of a predictor of NFL success as the bunion on my big toe is about the stock market.

Bowels likely knows he can’t have a 5th consecutive losing season as a head coach and keep his job. Licht likely knows it’s easier to fire Bowels if you take away all his excuses for why he lost.

    Win-win.

Maybe it’s time to take your brain out and play with it, since it’s obviously going to waste inside your head.

  39. garro Says:

Umm… real leaders would never ever say such a thing …hmm starting to wonder about Baker already…
