“We’re Going To Finish”

February 27th, 2023

Joe likes how new offensive coordinator Dave Canales has drawn at least one line in the sand, one for which he can be judged by anyone watching the Buccaneers.

Toughness is critical for Canales. Todd Bowles wants more of it, too. And Canales defined it, in part, during his recent chat with WDAE radio.

For fans wondering about the Bucs offense, Canales has plenty in mind, but he did put one trait atop his priority list.

“Above all, we’re going to finish,” Canales said. “We’re going to finish plays. We’re going to finish quarters. We’re going to finish halves. We’re going to finish games. And we’re going to finish this season playing at the same level of energy and intensity that we did the first snap of the season.”

Hearing that, it’s a safe bet Canales quickly will fall in love with center Ryan Jensen, who loves to play through the whistle and sprint down field to block unsuspecting defenders.

Why do so few lineman follow Jensen’s lead — not just on the Bucs but across the NFL? Joe can’t answer that. Perhaps it’s the same reason healthy baseball players don’t run hard to first base.

Joe’s heart would be warmed to see a fight-to-the-death mindset displayed by the Bucs offense. The O-line certainly could get nastier. And if the Bucs hope to run often– and Canales and Bowles sure want to — they’ll need that approach to be successful.

    Last.

I’m glad to see Canales is going to install the “wide zone” offense in Tampa…

It’s the same offense Rashad White was very successful in while he was at Arizona State.

  3. D-Rok Says:

This is all the coach-speak we’ve been missing the last year. Wait, WHO is the head coach?

Whether the speak comes to fruition or not is anyone’s guess, but at least someone is bothering to spew the appropriate words and veribiage.

  4. Canabuc Says:

I like the energy this guy brings. I think we did a bad job of scheming our receivers open and running in a way to give our backs room in space.

We were a team who said we have talented guys and we will just beat you mano a mano. Worked out SB season when whole team was healthy for playoffs and we had Gronk and AB.
This team was a bit short on talent.
This offensive coaching staff will get more out of our players I am certain.

    So far so good

  6. rrsrq Says:

I would rather hear, we are going to finish with Touchdowns in the Red Zone (fire them cannons – twice)

  7. Mike C Says:

Let’s F@$# GO, all these guys should just hang it up and stop trying to win the cheddar because the goat quit! F that! Go out and fight for YOUR legacy!

  8. BrianBucs Says:

Canales will be implementing the Wide Zone offense.
3 of the Bucs O-Linemen don’t fit that scheme at all.
That will make free agency and the draft even more interesting

  9. Rod Munch Says:

We’re going to score 100-points a game with zero turnovers for the year.

See, it’s easy to say anything. That doesn’t mean it’s going to happen. I guarantee you Ray Perkins with his three-a-day practices had players that were tougher and meaner than any of the sissies playing today. That doesn’t mean anything if you’re scoring 12 points a game. As a fan, I want to see a team that is fun to watch on offense and scores points. As for them raking guys eyes at the bottom of the pile to prove how tough and mean they are, well, I just don’t care (not against it, but if I don’t see it, there’s no entertainment value in it).

If your new OC is prioritizing playing to the whistle, which goes without saying, then D. Smith should not be here. Throughout his tenure as a Buc. D. Smith took plays off, I’m amazed he lasted this long.

  11. NEfans Says:

Ya but won’t the players get tired?Blows isn’t gonna like that.

  12. Bucsfanman Says:

    Amen coach! Amen!!!

  13. JP09 Says:

Jahmyr Gibbs RB from bama to pair up with white would be awesome. Evans, Godwin, White and Gibs on the field at the same time with a coach who schemes players open would be tough to stop

Canales sure talks bigtime, just like he was taught. Expect endless Pete Carroll motivational speaker-speak, rah rah. He’s throwing around “we” like he’s the head coach and owner. Meanwhile, the real HC is silent and brooding, and he is calling all the shots. Is this how it goes from now on, some weird good cop/bad cop PR? Let the young Mr. Enthusiasm spew the oxygen and talk tough. Let’s see him do it.

Let’s see him do something here that was not done in Seattle, even during the greatest seasons of that franchise. Which was almost entirely built on the defense, and the work of Marshawn Lynch (who can’t be replicated) and freelancing Russell Wilson (same), on an sporadic offense that struggled in countless games, and struggled trying to impose Tom Cable’s zone blocking scheme, succeeding only when the defense had pounded opponents down first.

In other words, if the plan is to replicate that (and to be fair, we don’t know what Canales will do), then the Bucs defense will have to superior, aka Bowles has to make it so.

  15. Goatfarmer Says:

If the Bucs could finish like ButtGril and Randork do every night after thinking about their fantasy Kyle, maybe the Bucs might win some games. Or at least be less stressed about sucking.

  16. Goatfarmer Says:

Steele – spot on analysis. So it’s up to the Toadster, The only head coach in the NFL sporting four consecutive losing seasons while in charge.

And the D roster is about to be decimated due to cap, and above head coich.

Methinks we all know the outcome.

  17. Mike Johnson Says:

I luv this new OC’s enthusiasm. But in the words of my main man Mike Tyson, Everybody got a plan..until they get hit.

  18. Goatfarmer Says:

Someone should get Mike Tyson to come over and hit Toad Blowes in the mouth and wake him from his coma. Or at least see if it’s possible.

  19. David Says:

That’s great and all but losing Brady and some veterans… How exactly are they going to be better this year? And if in fact Todd Bowles was the reason the O sucked and he would not let BL and Brady open it up, then this season is just going to be the final nail in his coffin, nothing more.
Personally I think it sucks because he is a good DC he should’ve never been a HC apparently.

They can say it’s not all they want… But it is a minimum of a two-year rebuilding process. If they get rid of the head coach, now we’re looking at 3 to 4.

  20. Hail2dabucs Says:

Go frigging get some big nasty road graders who are adequate pass blockers in this draft & few on the dline .. that’s what this team needs ! Dump ds76 and a few others ..pound the rock and play action looks like will be the bucs calling this year…go bucs !

  21. RednekDad Says:

    Buccaneers fans are retarded

  22. JimbobBucsFan Says:

Now, now, RednekDad! 🥵 Some of our fans are quite intelligent and full of foresight. They want our team to “tank” this year so we can draft next year’s sure thing and spend five years watching him ascend to near GOAT level perfection. 😋 😘 😎

  23. Mark Says:

I was against drafting AR15 but now that we have Russell Wilson’s quarterback coach , maybe that’s not a bad idea at all. The guy has tons of potential.
