Recent Trade-Ups For Quarterbacks Have Been Disasters

February 26th, 2023

Frightening QB history.

If you’ve been hitting the bars Saturday night and for whatever reason need to suddenly get a hold of yourself, the following will sure sober you up.

With the Bucs needing a quarterback — unless you are a Kyle Trask groupie (remember the Mike Glennon Mob?) — there is always a chance Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht trades up for a quarterback.

The Bucs currently sit at No. 19.

It’s not something Joe would do unless C.J. Stroud is dangled. But you have to keep your options open, no?

Well, after reading intel from former NFL scout and current NFL Network draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah, the answer to the previous question is, no.

If Licht is toying with the idea, he may want to think again. Jeremiah rattled off the names of several quarterbacks since 2016 that were selected after their respective teams burned through premium draft capital to trade up for and acquire.

Instead, their man more often than not ended up killing the careers of the general managers who pulled the trigger. The names Jeremiah spouted of the quarterbacks who were traded up for since 2016 is like a Who’s Who of quarterback nightmares. A sampling:

Trey Lance, Sam Darnold, Mitchell Trubisky, Jared Goff and Carson Wentz. Lawd! And here are names Jeremiah skipped: Jordan Love, Josh Rosen and Paxton Lynch.

Of course, there have been a few success stories after trading up in recent years. Pat Mahomes springs to mind. Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson are others. (The Texans traded up for Deshaun Watson, which seemed like a home run. Now?)

But since 2016, the busts that teams traded up for far outnumber the lottery jackpots.

  1. FortMyersDave Says:

Allen only got to the Bills thanks to Licht. He traded the #7 overall in 2018 for picks #12, 53 and 56 picks overall. With #12 they got Vea who many consider to be a part time player and hence, somewhat a bust. At 53 they got MJ Stewart: big BUST, with #56 the Bucs traded down to get Carlton Davis at 63 and Jordan Whitehead at 117 in the 4th. Davis is a good CB, Whitehead played well for the Jets this year and the Bucs missed him. Did the Bucs get fleeced? Well I certainly would not give Licht an A for drafting Vea (C-/D+) but Davis and Whitehead were solid contributers (B+) but the Bill definitely got an A+. So trade advantage: Bills! Keep that in mind Licht when you try to get cute in the upcoming draft and try to trade up or trade down like you did last year and got a very potential bust in Logan Hall who did nothing last season except knock Jensen out for the season!

  2. firethecannons Says:

Roll with Trask and Canales and Todd Bowles, the results will either be good or we will be drafting in top 5 2024 draft with new coaching staff.

  3. Winny Testaverde Says:

Mahomes and Reid make a synergistic “marriage”…not unlike Brees & Payton did ( as much as I still despise those geeks ). Let’s not forget that The Bills traded The Bucs for that pick…Tampa still hoping Winny would be a franchise QB vs the Dub eating clown he’s now known as. Still…Josh Allen for VV and MJ Stewart. No bueno.

  4. Joe Says:

Well I certainly would not give Licht an A for drafting Vea (C-/D+)

Bucs don’t win the NFC Championship without Vea.

Buffalo has yet to get to the Super Bowl with Allen.

    Advantage: Bucs.

  5. Rand Says:

Trask groupie is an implied disrespect to fans

  6. SB Says:

    Yup Rand. We are “irrational”.

  7. Mike C Says:

Yeah all the Trask groupies are idiots! Can’t you see that he won’t be half the pro QB Johnny football was! Joe why don’t you stop the trashing of Trask? Between that grEaT photo you posted of him the other day and comparing his supporters to the Mike Glennon mob is just a complete troll move. (Wish someone would post your most unflattering giant pic all over the page). Smh what a $%#@.

  8. Mike C Says:

Ohhh and wanting to see what we have in a second round pick is not ” being a groupie “

  9. Allbuccedup Says:

Ohio State quarterbacks have yet to set the NFL on 🔥.

  10. Goatfarmer Says:

Busts always outnumber hits. It’s the business. College performance is a poor indicator of success in the NFL. That bit is in between the ears. Some have what it takes to adjust, speed everything up while processing the arseload of information they must to be a top performer. Most think that they have the athleticism and improv skills to get them where they want to go. Hello, Kyler Murray. Ryan Leaf.

Of course Jason Licht knows this. He’s trying to find a bargain vet QB, and we might not like it but it’s better than rolling with ButtBoy’s fantasy centerfold, Number 2, Kyle’s Trashk.

  11. Allbuccedup Says:

This draft scares the hell out of me. This is the most important draft in recent history if we blow this one its going to hurt for years to come. I have got a bad feeling the Licht is going to shove more monet down the road and our current situation is going to get worse. But I hope not.

  12. Goatfarmer Says:

And PS – if Trashk ends up having the career that Mike Glennon had, he’ll be very lucky. Trashk is a bit less in-athletic but lacks Glennon’s arm. The old giraffe did have a big arm. .

  13. Brian Says:

Kendon Hooker I. The second if he’s there ! Let him compete with Trask

  14. Rand Says:

rinse repeat I love when the media throws a name out there and fans hear it then they start commenting the name they hear like as if it were their brilliant ideal.
For example Hooker. When he was mentioned somewhere in the media everybody started saying hey how about Hooker the next day. So funny how sheep are lead around by the rings in their proverbial noses.

  15. Jimbo B Says:

These all made the playoffs and most the pro bowl by trading up>
Josh allen, patrick ma-hom-es, Lamar jackson, deshawn watson, jared goff, carson wentz, teddy bridgewater, RG3, tim tebow, josh freeman, joe flacco, michael vick,

and Baline Gabbert (traded a 1st and a 2nd) LOL

  16. Jeff’s grandpa Says:

    Common sense ain’t common

  17. Bucs Guy Says:

Bust rate of first round QBs 50%.
Bust rate of trade ups for QBs 66%.

In your example, that’s 2 QBs. Seems too small to be statistically relevant. Besides most people would agree Paxton Lynch and Jordan Love had no business being 1st rd picks.

  18. Duane Says:

Joe – stop just stop with your demeaning insults of Bucs fans for the apparent crime in your mind of wanting to see what the Bucs have in our 2nd round draft pick quarterback.

    “Trask groupies”? Really?

  19. DBS Says:

I do remember the Mike Glennon Mob. However I also remember who declared himself The General.

    ^^^^^^^^^^
The Trask Mob aren’t sheep? No? Oh, okay…If you say so it has to be true.

  21. Joe in Michigan Says:

Sorry, I meant to say “Trask Groupies”.

  22. Joe in Michigan Says:

Yes, I’m 100% trolling the Trask fans! Take it easy, I’m joking.

  23. DungyDance Says:

This story is a good set up for some perspective. As fantasies continue for a certain quarterback in the 2024 draft, are you still certain that deliberately playing to lose would actually work out? And remember, having a colossal suck season can do more damage than just the season itself. The culture among players can be ruined for years. Qualty players and coaches may not want to come here. And respect of the team from the outside (fans, primetime tv decisions) could go like a fart in the wind. So I’m not convinced that “tanking” for whoever is such a smart move.

  24. BucBoy Says:

JOE: “With the Bucs needing a quarterback — unless you are a Kyle Trask groupie”

You mean like the Jameis Winston and Johnny Manziel groupies led by Joe himself? Take a look!

JOE: “Joe is a big fan of America’s Quarterback, Bucs signal-caller Jameis Winston. Regular readers probably got that impression when Joe began banging the drum daily for the Bucs to draft Jameis.”

JOE: “Like a fire and brimstone preacher. The legend of America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, grows with each passing week.”

JOE: “Muhammad Ali and Jameis. One of the most influential figures of the 20th century, Muhammad Ali, died yesterday. Prior to America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, getting drafted, Joe wrote about the link between Ali and Jameis.”

JOE: “Johnny Manziel has been the finest playmaker in college football over the last two years. Your eyes tell you the kid can play. Regular readers here know Johnny Football is Joe’s preferred pick. It would be an outstanding move for the Bucs to draft Johnny Football.”

    LMAO.

Busts always exceed jackpots. Throughout tg6e universe

  26. Tvan101 Says:

Roll with Trask and get the cap right is the play. This Joe always ties himself to a stance on a player and will not budge, Joe would probably rather have Manziel.

  27. Marine Buc Says:

I wouldn’t trade up in the draft from pick #19 – I would actually trade down in order to gain extra draft picks…

We only have 4 picks in rounds 1-5 (no 4th rounder) and we have 5 picks in rounds 6-7 (3 7th rounders).

If we plan on cutting players like Brate, Fournette and D. Smith we will need those extra picks in order to replace them.

Not to mention we have at least 20-24 free agents to replace. It’s difficult to do with just 5 draft picks… We need to add at least 10-12 solid young players in this years draft.

  28. Marine Buc Says:

If I pick a QB it would be Hooker in the 3rd (if he is still available) or Stetson Bennett in the 5th or 6th…

Trask will be the starter and the Bucs will probably add a cheap vet like Gabbert or Drew Lock so we just need a third string developmental guy.

I am going to say “no thank you” to Will Levis and Anthony Richardson.

  29. Allbuccedup Says:

    I believe we have 8 picks total: 1 1st round 1 2nd round 1 3rd round 2 5th round 2 6th round 1 7th round.

  30. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Allbuccedup

    Round 1, Pick 19
    Round 2, Pick 50
    Round 3, Pick 82
    Round 5, Pick 155
    Round 5, Pick 175
    Round 6, Pick 181
    Round 6, Pick 196
    Round 7, Pick 232
    Round 7, Pick 253

My bad – we have 5 picks in rounds 1-5 and only (2) in round 7…

JOE: “Johnny Manziel has been the finest playmaker in college football over the last two years. Your eyes tell you the kid can play. Regular readers here know Johnny Football is Joe’s preferred pick. It would be an outstanding move for the Bucs to draft Johnny Football.”

  32. stpetebucfan Says:

Wow just wow! Now fans are slamming Licht for drafting Vea and calling him a bust? Are you freakng serious?

From Joe’s faves at the PFF (snark font off now Joe lol)

Vea is now extended through the 2026 season. Vea has an 85.2 overall PFF grade over the course of his four-year career, which ranks 15th among all interior defensive linemen.

How about SI’s take? “The investment in Vea paid immediate dividends for the Bucs. He is a player who has helped the Buccaneers’ defense turn a corner, as the team’s performance on that side of the ball has continued to improve along the same trajectory that he has continued to develop as a player.”

I agree with Marine Bucs take on getting more picks not trading up.

  33. Statistically Insignificant Reader Says:

yeah, hindsight is easy pickings for the bitchin.

  34. stpetebucfan Says:

When talking about the draft there is a wild card to consider.

Winning a SB takes a season when many players, including the stars have career years. Last season Brady was not the only guy to have a career worst season.

Whether its injuries like Shaq’s or Donovans, or just uninspired play like DW55 the Bucs had a lot of players that did not meet their potential.

If those same players turn it around and have positive years that alone would be a major improvement.

  35. RagingBrisket Says:

Jason Licht is so overrated it’s scary. Hated the Trask pick two years ago and since we are afraid to hand the keys to him it seems it was another colossal waste. The new lost decade is darkening our door. Buckle up Bucs fans.

  36. BucBoy Says:

NFL SCOUTING REPORT ON TRASK: “Trask clearly has the arm strength. Can deliver deep throws with outstanding touch. Arm strength to whip field-side deep outs with no issues. Talented downfield passer with touch and accuracy. Can attack one-on-ones and place deep throws where it needs to go. The first FBC quarterback in 15 years to post three or more TD passes in 9 consecutive games.”

SUPER BOWL WINNING COACH BRUCE ARIANS: “We got a good young quarterback.”

    JOE: “Trask sucks.”

    😛

  37. Joe in Michigan Says:

BucBoy: What did Arians say about Jameis when he first took over as coach of the Bucs? If he said anything positive about Jameis (which he most certainly did), then what? Or the quotes Joe wrote during/after Jameis busted? You’re going to cherry pick to fit your narrative, aren’t you?

  38. Craig Says:

Bowles is still the HC and he is a defensive guy.

That means the first draft pick will be a defensive one.

Best to trade down from 19 and get two 2nd round or a second and third round pick.

That way Bowles and Canales can get an early pick.

  39. BucBoy Says:

    Meatchicken,

Arians doesn’t run a website seemingly devoted to trashing Trask and calling fans “groupies” because they think Trask deserves a chance with the first team. Anyone who holds himself out that pompassly is going to get called out on his prior laughable opinions on quarterbacks. It’s life.

  40. Winny Testaverde Says:

Today on JBF.com…we unmask a prolific poster/ Trask teabagger. It’s…it’s the former Teen People “moderator”…we knew him as Lilbbeenoh! Welcome back from banishment. Chris Hansen would still like a word, however.

  41. Joe in Michigan Says:

BucBoy: If/when Trask busts, you’ll just change your name, right? How many prior names have you had? Are you Ndog, Realisto, or one of these other guys that “came up missing”, more likely changed their identity?

Joe in Michigan Says: “BucBoy: If/when Trask busts, you’ll just change your name, right?”

First, why do you always respond to factual posts with a red herring that avoids what I wrote? It betrays a truly feeble mind.

Second, why would I change my name? I have never said that Trask will be a Hall of Famer, or a Super Bowl winner, or that he will be great, good, mediocre, subpar, or bad as an NFL quarterback (and you will find no such comment from me – try finding one). Because, unlike idiots like you and all the Haters who pollute this website with irrational hate toward Trask, I know enough to know that nobody really knows how Trask will play.

Just like Joe didn’t know when he campaigned heavily for Johnny Manziel and Jameis Winston, and laid a big egg with his opinions. He likewise knows nothing about how Trask will fare now.

The only legitimate question is whether the haters – we all know who they are – will change THEIR names if/when Task succeeds? Why don’t you ask THAT question, Meatchicken? THEY’RE the ones who have made definitive statements about how Trask will play. Oh, that’s right, you won’t ask them because you’re a puss.

  46. Usfbuc Says:

Licht is not trading up in this draft to get a QB. They will certainly draft a QB and bring in a cheap veteran to compete for the job.

This is actually a great draft for the Bucs because it aligns so well with our needs. CB, S, Edge, DI are all deep groups in this draft. ILB and TE are probably the groups with the fewest options.

Vea is in no way a bust.

  47. BucBoy Says:

  49. Joe in Michigan Says:

Rand and BucBoy: May I suggest you two start your own “Trask’s My Boy” website where you can moderate any/all of us hurtful, evil people who think Trask has the makings of the next Mike Glennon (at best). That way, you won’t have to change your names later in shame and embarrassment. Thank you in advance for your new website. You guys and 25 of Trask’s closest family and friends, it’ll be great!

  50. Joe in Michigan Says:

BucBoy: Trask has the makings of the next Mike Glennon (at best).

  51. Joe Says:

Just like Joe didn’t know when he campaigned heavily for Johnny Manziel and Jameis Winston, and laid a big egg with his opinions. He likewise knows nothing about how Trask will fare now.

Well, at least Jameis demonstrated he could play in the NFL and wasn’t a coke head (allegedly).

Funny how you never mention how Joe wrote Josh Freeman would be a bust in waiting and was against drafting him. Why is that? Ah, Joe knows why: It doesn’t fit your Joe-hating narrative. You hate Joe but you still post here? What a fraud!

Sooner or later you will cross the line and Joe will hit the Goodbye Button. It’s just a matter of time. Right BucBoy/beano/bucsfan37/pittsshore?

Dudes that ejaculate over one subject and one subject only (BucBoy is a wrong name. He never comments on any other subject but Trask, his handle should more accurately be “TraskBoy”) are pretty easy to spot and generally they find a way to get themselves run. It never fails.

Joe could write a one-word post and so long as that one word is “Trask” BucBoy/beano/bucsfan37/pittsshore would have a dozen comments.

You are either related to Trask or you are his girlfriend. The last time Joe had a commenter who had such an angry boner defending a sketchy quarterback who only commented about said quarterback and no other subject at all was when Mike Glennon’s brother littered this site.

  52. BucBoy Says:

I don’t hate Joe at all. I just don’t buy into your opinions on quarterbacks when your historical batting average isn’t great and Bucs coaches appear to disagree with you. I’d like to see what the kid can do.

  53. Rand Says:

Same here, I just want to see what Trask has to offer with the #ones. I’m sorry I just don’t trust Joe’s assessment of him while practicing with mostly backups and practice squad players. That’s not a fair apples to apples comparison. He could be a diamond in the rough or a 2nd round bust so shouldn’t we at least find out before casting him out on his keester and wasting a 2nd round pick and 2 years on the bench learning from the G.O.A.T.?

  54. Joe in Michigan Says:

I HOPE Trask is good. It’d settle the Bucs biggest need. Sign someone (or 2), draft someone (if there’s a QB worthy of the pick) and let them battle it out.

  55. BucBoy Says:

Rand Says: “Shouldn’t we at least find out before casting him out on his keester and wasting a 2nd round pick and 2 years on the bench learning from the G.O.A.T.?”

No! The jury has spoken and Trask is no good!

Frankly, I’m convinced Trask’s detractors are so invested into trashing him that they’re terrified of him being given a shot and succeeding. They don’t want egg on their faces.

  56. Goatfarmer Says:

Joes – loved the takedown of Trask’s mom and sister. Saved me the trouble, much more eloquent and incisive.

I don’t care for Bowles very much (obviously) but if Trask has earned his chance, Todd will give it to him. The fangirls praying for him to be anointed are comical if a bit embarrassing.

  57. Goatfarmer Says:

Joe in Michigan – also kudos to you . The irrational hyper-love for the Trashk Can must create a mess around the Kyle poster.

  58. DungyDance Says:

It’s not really accurate to still be saying “let’s see what the kid can do,” “give it a chance,” etc. We saw a lot in preseason, and by that I mean a lot of INT’s. We also saw a handful of plays in a real game this past season, also bad. Has he had the chance to learn from mistakes, to grow, to develop his own rhythm with the team? Clearly not, so it is still too early for conclusions. But enough with this crap about unfounded bias against him. There is ample evidence now to justify a negative first impression. Just not a conclusion. Yet.

  59. RagingBrisket Says:

So if we are to believe that Trask is not the guy before not having watched him start a single game in the NFL is it not fair to hold the person who spent a 2nd round pick on him responsible?
Then you have to ask if you want Licht to be the one to draft yet another quarterback instead? I don’t trust this guy and cannot see how any of you do either. His success rate in the draft is quite low with only a handful of good players to show for it.

  60. unbelievable Says:

You could make the same exact argument for quarterbacks in general, with or without a trade up.

More are busts than home runs.

    Same as it ever was.
