Lavonte David Says Bucs Are Not Rebuilding

February 10th, 2023

Lavonte David is all in favor of the Bucs forging ahead with untested third-year quarterback Kyle Trask, but that doesn’t mean a rebuild is in the minds of management, he explained yesterday.

Buzzing around Radio Row at the Super Bowl, David stopped to chat with Ceraulo Sports Talk.

The iconic Bucs linebacker, a pending free agent, said he’s hungry to keep playing but also noted he’s old and wise enough to know teams and fans are scrutinizing his play to try and determine how much he has left.

David thinks he has at least a couple of strong seasons remaining, and he wants to spend them in Tampa. The Bucs’ leading tackler this season wants another ring and he was clear that Bucs officials believe they are close to contending for one.

“Knowing the guys down in Tampa, knowing the staff they have, they’re not looking for a rebuild. They’re just looking to regroup or rebound,” David said. “Plug and play. That’s how their mindset is down there.”

On WDAE radio, David said he has yet to have contract talks with the Bucs but is expecting them soon. So Joe isn’t sure whether David really knows the current thinking of Bucs management.

However, Joe knows David is tight with head coach Todd Bowles. And it’s certainly likely Bowles told David that he’s not signing up for a teardown and rebuild.

From where I’m standing it looks like the Bucs are dead in the water.

I hear rumors and voices in the wind, but nothing is moving that I can see; and the sharks of next season are already circling.

The management needs to make something happen. Find an OC,for one.

  2. Bosch Says:

Bowels is blowing smoke at Lavonte. That said, he is one of the few older vets the Bucs should keep. Glad he wants to stay.

  3. anderson Fa Gonzalez Says:

Todd bowles is in such a hot seat. their is no way he is rebuilding.

  4. BrianBucs Says:

They can call it a Rebuild, a Reload or a Regroup, but with the Bucs salary cap situation and their long list of free agents, the Bucs roster will look a whole lot different next season

  5. BucsfanFred Says:

Maybe the team is waiting for someone who is on the Chiefs or Eagles???

  6. SB~LV Says:

    HELLO!
The Bucs don’t have a quarterback

  7. FlBoy84 Says:

No interest in what Bowles’ thought process is, personally believe he’s the biggest obstacle to the Bucs having a legit shot next season and the main reason the team underperformed in ’22. The sooner he’s gone the better. Would love to see David re-signed for a couple of seasons to tutor White’s replacement.

  8. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Kind of looks like the Bucs are waiting for Kyle Trasks old coach at Florida who is on the Eagles ?
That will be an excellent move, IMHO, if we can get him!
Lavonte is needed here in Tampa to keep some kind of control on the wild man who plays linebacker next to him.

  9. Chris Stewart Says:

I’ve heard so much talk from there players/team last year I don’t believe a word any of them say. Until they win, it’s just talk

    Suckers!

  12. Letsbucinggo Says:

    Trade White keep Lavonte.

  13. Joe in Michigan Says:

    David: “The Bucs aren’t rebuilding”
Also David “The Bucs should roll with Trask”

The Bucs would’ve been lucky to win a game, ONE GAME, if Trask was the starter in 2022. If the Bucs start Trask, they’re rebuilding.

  14. SB~LV Says:

    Great business tactic

  16. Doug Says:

I still can’t believe bowles has a job.

  17. HC Grover Says:

They are regressing. Back to the same old Bucs. Let the Bowles Clown Show begin.

  18. Letsbucinggo Says:

Do a poll on firing Bowles immediately.

  19. Yucs2Bucs Says:

Lavonte isn’t even going to be on this team next season, so his comments in my mind are bizarre? Contend for what and no reason to think this team is reloading because of all the holes and FAs, but that they haven’t signed an OC is extremely telling and disappointing because no one wants to come here. To pay Dean CD money is ludacris and how did that pan out last season, but I guess they like to sign easily injured and brick for hands CBs. The rebuild needs to start ASAP and like I said the only one that I would not trade is Whirfs and I know fans want to see their favorite player retire as Bucs and not see that this team actually has some very tradable assets especially at the WR position along with a center. They missed on every FA signing last year and without money plan to reload 😳 That’s not only laughable, but criminal and stop blowing ample up each Bucs fan arses and do the right thing because the quicker they blow it up the quicker they will be competitive!! JL needs to walk over to Amalie and sit with that organization so they can show him how to run a successful and competitive franchise going on 10 years

wait until they tell Lavonte he is cut

  22. Nicholas Carlson Says:

I’d have killed for the Bucs current roster circa 2016. Everyone relax about some super master plan to get the next Peyton Manning or Patrick Mahomes – an incredible long shot – and let’s go for 11 wins now.

    ^^^^^^^^
Which game would’ve the Bucs won last year if Trask was the starter? Can you name one? Or do you think Trask, the backup to the backup, is better than Brady?
Chances are you’re a troll from some of your race-baiting comments, so I’ll leave it at that.

  24. Allbuccedup Says:

This team more and more looks like future cellar dwellers. With Bowles holding the keys. I still can’t believe he is still the head coach.

  25. Allbuccedup Says:

Doesn’t the Glazers have any friends that know anything about football or do they just sit around all day drinking liberal lattes talking about the stock market and Manchester United.

  26. SB~LV Says:

Do NOT tolerate anything but EXCELLENCE from the Glazerrrs
They have been getting away with a submissive fan base.
Time to reject anything but excellence and I have my doubts that they understand NFL excellence.
Kinds like a government or union worker
“It all pays the same “
Sorry for the stereotype if it doesn’t apply to you if you are a union or government worker, but I think you understand.
It’s TIME for the fans to stand up and lead the way!

  27. surferbuc Says:

    Joe in Michigan,

We averaged a measly 18.4 PPG and still won 8 games. Trask would have won at least 4 if not more games and had a season under his belt. For you to say that he would have won 1 game at most is just more irrational deep seated bias from an FSU homer that plays well here but nowhere else. You must be PITHED OFF at all the pro Trask articles this week, huh?

    🏄

  28. HA-HA-HA Says:

Free Agents are the last to know.

  29. HA-HA-HA Says:

At any other time, the last 3 years would have been a rebuilding effort.
Instead, TB12 shows up and the Team goes all in for “Win Now”.
Now the team is 3 years older and still needs to rebuild.
Time for everyone to go starting with the always injured, big name players. The Buccaneers could have had the same results by signing practice squad players. Who knows, one or two might have been a keeper.

  30. unbelievable Says:

Bring in Brian Johnson as OC, find a speedy WR in the draft and add an o-lineman. Offense could be okay.

Defense is more tricky but you keep LVD and Dean, find a pass rusher or 2 between FA and the draft, and let’s effin go!

  31. matthew veal Says:

    Great player.

Do I know the truth? Wish I did.

Arguably the Trask idea are his best chance of david getting paid by the bucs.

Wish it was all true, no idea

  32. SB~LV Says:

    Sell the team!
    Move On Dot Glazer’s

  33. Dooley Says:

It’s wild how, when it’s negative everybody is clairvoyant, but nobody can tell when or whom is going to return a kick for a TD or who we’ll walk away from the draft with. Listening to the average comment on here, it’s all doom & gloom before the ’23 league year even starts so why even bother? right?

  34. Beej Says:

LD is our best defensive player by any measure, has the right attitude also. Have to sign him for at least one more year

  35. DBS Says:

Son of Trask I must ask. Do you think you are fooling anyone with your new name here? As usual you can’t control yourself anytime his name is brought up. If the Team wants him to be the starter he will be. If not he may be the backup. Or he may be gone. But of course one way or the other you will cry he did not get a fair chance.

  36. Trask To The Future Says:

All the Trask Hate makes zero sense.

Give the guy a chance to play with the starters and see what he can do.

That first full year of starting at UF he went off for huge yardage and also had an amazing completion percentage. There’s a reason the Bucs scouts wanted him in the 2nd round *AND* there was even chatter if you recall that the Bucs did consider taking him at the end of the 1st round.

  37. 1sparkybuc Says:

I sure wish Steve Young could have had a fair chance with the Bucs.

  38. Buccos Says:

Trask is ready. He was awesome in college and got to watch the GOAT for 2 years. He could be the next Aaron Rodgers
