Chris Godwin Doesn’t Seem Too Worried About New-Look Bucs

February 10th, 2023

Roster change chatter.

It was an interview largely devoid of any substance but Joe got something out of nothing.

Bucs receiver Chris Godwin appeared on NFL Network earlier this week and he was asked a couple of questions that were softer than hits in a powderpuff flag football game.

Of course, Godwin was lobbed a softball about Tom Brady and how different things will be for Godwin and the Bucs.

Godwin brushed off the change and noted each year a roster changes by some 30 percent (former Bucs coach Dirk Koetter often referenced this stat). Godwin said while the roster will change, his responsibilities won’t.

What are those responsibilities? Busting his tail catching the ball and doing what he is asked to the best of his ability.

“I don’t feel like there is much concern, not from me,” Godwin said. “You expect that your roster is going to change every year. I feel like the number of guys we have been able to retain the last couple of years has been [an outlier].

“We’re expecting new guys to be in. But just like everything else, you have to approach it every single day — you have to go to work. You don’t win games on paper.

“Regardless of what guys you have on the roster, you have to figure out a way to make your team gel.”

One could argue that did not happen last year. At least not on offense. If you want to blame coaches, fine. If you want to blame an aging, distracted quarterback, fine. If you want to blame that on perhaps players mentally and emotionally checking out, fine.

In retrospect, Joe found it interesting the best game the Bucs played all last season came when the team was on foreign soil on the other side of the Atlantic. Joe’s not a shrink but was that a signal of sorts that escaping the country where so much was expected of the Bucs, where there was so much pressure from outside influences to repeat the success of the past two seasons, actually allowed the team to breathe and relax and ball out?

Armchair psychologists might have a field day with that concept.

Yup. And if you want to blame ALL THREE like most of us probably do, fine.

Brady wont miss Godwin. My memories of Godwin are o him dropping balls and at least one fumble every game. As soon as Bucs get a new qb than Brady will feel finally free. Brady I think really loves Bucs organization and really appreciates the fans. Bucs fans and organization treated him great. Brady for saw what was going to happen if he stayed with Bucs. He wanted to leave he tried but in the end he came back to tampa. Gisele wanted Brady to play for miami or retire. Once he said he was coming back to tampa it was inevitable Gisele was going to leave him. Season was ruined Brady checked out ala 2019 patriots

Godwin is one of my favorite Buc. The guy is such a hard worker and shows maximum on every play. My biggest issue with Evans is that he would sometimes give poor effort on routes. This issues predates Brady. He would leave his QBs out to dry with poor route running and effort. Winston would have picks where it wasn’t his fault. It was because Evans left him out to dry. No one really cared when it happened to him, but when Brady experienced it, there was spotlight on the issues because Brady is a detailed perfectionist. He has the cache to call guys out, and wouldn’t hesitate to do it. Godwin also had a better football IQ than Evans.

Brady had a better connection on the field and off with Godwin. You wanna know how much Brady loves Godwin? He gave him his game worn jersey from the game against the Saints when he broke Manning’s record for 4th quarter comebacks. That jersey is very special and valuable, and he gave it to Godwin so he can auction it off for his foundation. That’s why Brady has had so much goodwill with his teammates over the years. He really cares about them.

Brady built this team now its the shell of the former superbowl team. Now is when the coaches leadership should come to the forefront but we have none. Backstabbing Bowles!,

great player. he is the #1 WR on this team whether anyone wants to admit it or not. He is the safety net/money man.

KC seems to be able to consistently handle expectations placed on them. The Bucs can’t?

  13. Dooley Says:

Brady officially filed his retirement letter today, meaning the Glazers are eating that $24M in cap space so our off-season is going to be like renovating a house with a Dave & Busters arcade card lol

  14. Zwak Says:

Maybe because it’s what these guys do for a living, it’s a job. They get paid either way win or lose. Somehow we all seem to forget this..

  15. Simeon97 Says:

joe, can you please fill us in on the cap implications with brady filing his retirement letter? Can bucs spread over 2 years?

So much wrong in one post, I don’t even know where to begin, but clearly your memory is very, very short.

    1. Godwin had a few fumbles / drops late this past season as he came back from injury, yes. But that was not the norm from him during the Brady years. Not at all. In fact Godwin was his most dependable target and I’m pretty sure had the highest catch % of any of our WRs during those 3 years.

    2. Gisele “left him” b/c she started banging her jujitsu instructor… Ya know, the guy she’s now dating? Had nothing to do with Brady playing in Miami or not. And her antics started long before he retired and un-retired.

  17. Texasbicsfan Says:

I am getting tired of the words “PRESSURE” and NERVES. One has to realize that it is not the issue that you have to deal with, it is how you handle the issue that is important. If you took these two words out of reporters and announcers vocabulary, they would not be able to operate. Go Bucs.

    Goodwin
    2020: 3.6 drop percentage
    2021: 3.9 drop percentage.
    2022: 2.1 drop percentage.

Over 115 passer rating in the 3 years Brady threw to him.
Fumbles lost in last three seasons. 1.

In football terms though it’s called being a fan.

I doubt it’s expectations that changed in Germany. It was the fact that a Brady-led team did not want to be a part of the Geno Smith comeback story.
