Kyle Trask Non-Rumblings And Todd Bowles’ Leash

February 1st, 2023

Todd Bowles

A former Buccaneer has been sniffing for a certain leak to come out of One Buc Palace over the past two years.

He didn’t smell it.

Joe is referring to retired quarterback Shaun King, one of four QBs to lead Tampa Bay to the NFC Championship game, and his recent take on the quiet surrounding Bucs backup quarterback Kyle Trask.

When talking about the Bucs’ uncertain future at quarterback, King told WDAE radio that he finds it telling there have been no rumblings out of One Buc Palace over the past two years claiming Trask is impressing enough in practice to make team officials think he’s a starting-caliber player.

King isn’t saying Trask is bad, only that it’s significant Trask didn’t generate any significant buzz.

Combine that with Trask not looking too good against Atlanta in the season finale, King said, and Todd Bowles likely would get a no-hot-seat 2023 season from Team Glazer if he’s given Trask as his top option at QB

Joe gets King’s message and it’s somewhat ironic on this Tom Brady retirement day, since Brady himself was a fourth-stringer in New England for a year and got almost no practice reps. His former offensive coordinator Charlie Weis talked about that today on SiriusXM NFL Radio.

Brady, however, was generating all kinds of buzz among the staff for his intensity and work ethic, per Weis. And Bowles went there in a big way with Trask in January.

Joe can’t agree with King when it comes to Bowles and Trask. There’s a lot more evaluating a head coach than looking at quarterback production.

King isn’t saying Trask is bad, only that it’s significant Trask didn’t generate any significant buzz.

    ———

Well if you watch Trask in that Atlanta game, in the preseason, when you see he was the 3rd string QB, I think it’s safe to say what the team thinks of him. Not much.

Which is why he’s the perfect starter for Bowles in 2023. You want to lose, and get that #1 pick in 2024. Trask and Bowles are a great combo to make that happen. Only shame is letting Bowles get rid of Leftwich, since having that trio would have ensured success in that goal.

  2. Tampabaybucfan Says:

How did you expect Trask to look vs Atlanta…..we were down considerably in the middle of the 4th Gtr with our 3rd string playing against their first……

Trask didn’t have the benefit of our classic “run up the middle” strategy….

  3. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Brady was a 3rd stringer before his big break.

For a young guy, it means nothing. We need at least 6 real games worth of experience in order to truly evaluate Trask and figure out if he deserves more time.

    That said? I want Carr.

  4. beano Says:

    Munchie,

You’re so predictable. Throwing out biased opinions not tethered in facts, but rather tethered in your admitted “hatred of all Gators”.

Trask went into the Atlanta game with 7 minutes left and had 2 whole series with third stringers. And, Trask actually got a first down – by throwing – whereas in the first 23 minutes of the second half Gabbert got ZERO first downs.

By the way, Munchie, why do you keep ignoring what NFL.Com says in its scouting report on Trask? This:

“TRASK CLEARLY HAS THE ARM STRENGTH … AND CAN DELIVER DEEP THROWS WITH OUTSTANDING TOUCH.”

  5. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Also, if a backup QB gets no time with starters, he can’t be properly evaluated.

  6. HC Grover Says:

This year is just a mess. Good thing they sold 2 year tix. No amount of right guard will stop the upcoming stink. Can’t wait for the draft hype. the hype for how great they will be etc. Bucs require a clean sweep and total rebuild. They will dink and dunk along to less than 5 wins.

  7. rsjcheapseats Says:

Everyone who wants to tank so we get the first pick should be sentenced to watching a video of EVERY INTERCEPTION Winston, the first player chosen in the draft, threw.

  8. Rod Munch Says:

Tampabaybucfan – I’m with you, give him every chance to play in 2023, and use the year to clean up the cap, then in 2024, with the #1 pick in the draft, and a new headcoach, the Bucs will have a real sense of optimisim.

That will not happen if the Bucs waste a draft pick getting some idiot loser like Derek Carr, because the Bucs then go 5-12 or 6-11, the cap is still a mess, no real coach wants to come here because of the cap and being stuck with Carr, etc.

No, use 2023 to clean up everything and prepare to clean house. And if Trask surprizes, then fantastic, you’re in great shape going forward. But he should get every shot.

  9. rsjcheapseats Says:

And no, Brady was not the third stringer before he Bledsoe went out. Brady forced his way up the depth chart primarily because of his play in practice.

Stop comparing Trask to Brady. It is absurd. Brady impressed BB immediately on arrival.

  10. Jack Clark Says:

Todd “Dead Man Walking” Bowels better man up and fix our offense or he can go back to being a defensive coordinator somewhere else!

  11. Rod Munch Says:

rsjcheapseats – You mean the Bucs all-time passing leader, in yards and TDs? Who played with the worst defense in football from 2015-2019, and the NFL’s worst special teams from 2015-2019, all while playing the NFL’s hardest schedule over that time?

That’ Winston, who got the Bucs to have a top 5 offense in 3 of his 5 years, when the team had NEVER had a top 5 offense before that? Meanwhile he had the #32 defense.

You morons who think Winston was the issue are truly clueless idiots who have no idea what they were watching.

  12. Oxycondoms Says:

A backup qb can be evaluated vs backup defenders.

  13. Letsbucinggo Says:

I am glad King thinks 2023 is a no hot seat year for Bowles then we can two too five picks in a row plus three consecutive losing seasons.

  14. rsjcheapseats Says:

Rod Munch – the dude couldn’t even get a starting job after TB.
The stupidity it takes to defend Winston is astounding.

Here is the fricken truth – no one else in the NFL thought he was a starter.
    NO ONE.
    Deal with it.

  15. Smooth Bay Rider Says:

For anybody who is relying on the Atlanta game and preseason to evaluate Kyle Trask, I ask you this. Have you ever seen him behind the Bucs starting offensive lineman, or throw to our All Pro WRs ? How does anybody outside of that building know how good he is (or any QB for that matter) until they actually take the field with Starting caliber players ? I’d say Brock Purdy is a perfect example. He looked pretty darn good under center when he took the field with the 1st team.

  16. Dooley Says:

We need Rita to come in here and sprinkle some logic on Rod Munchs’ comments because it’s like national enquirer levels of moron coming from that guys’ keypad. Tank talk is for people who’ve never played a team sport or put their individual effort into a collective effort or people who ask other people to sleep with their spouses on purpose. Plz make it stop, losing on purpose is in theory worse than not playing to win and antithetical to why players play any game.

  17. A Bucs Fan Says:

Regardless of who is QB I would like to see the bucs rebuild both trenches this year. In 2024 they can draft a QB, if needed, and a couple new weapons as Evans and Godwin deals end (I hope they are bucs for life).

  18. Architek Says:

I’m not taking time out from my family to watch Trask…

  19. The Beer Whisperer Says:

Everyone is a football expert, down here in the “peanut gallery”

I just hope, no-one quits their day job.

  20. Rod Munch Says:

beano – You’re literally the most boring Florida fanboi ever, and you got the hots for Trask because, as you said, you think he’s ‘hot’ and ‘dreamy’. Go play with your My Little Pony’s and work on your furry convention costume.

  21. 1#bucsfan Says:

Best way to evaluate trask his let him play with the starters. Throwing passes to ME13 n CG14 will make him a all pro

Rod Munch – the dude couldn’t even get a starting job after TB.
The stupidity it takes to defend Winston is astounding.

    ———

Stupid, he was literally the starting QB in New Orleans, got hurt, then was literally the starting QB in New Orleans again, and literally got hurt again, breaking his back in 3 spots.

You morons that don’t pay attention, who think the Saints willingly were starting Dalton, well, it’s what you expect from low-IQ, low-T dullards.

In any case, argue based on the merits, not fake news.

  23. Bosch Says:

A no hot seat 2023 season for Bowels could also be achieved by cutting him loose right now.

  24. 1BUC76 Says:

We have far more of a shell to build from on offense rather than defense

It’s going to be a collection of 1 year contracts and rookies on D next year

Have to believe we sign someone of a more known commodity along side Trask, like Brissette or Mayfield and let them compete all off season

  25. Smooth Bay Rider Says:

@#1, Throwing to ME13 and CG12 probably won’t make him an All Pro, but it will likely make him look better than the Trask haters have made him out to be.

  26. BucU Says:

If we thought the 2022 season was a train wreck I can’t to see how bad 2023 is gonna be. Let’s at least hope that Licht will do better drafting this year. Tryon and Logan Hall are busts as far as I’m concerned.

  27. Bucs56 Says:

No lose situation. Sign Mayfield. If Trask doesn’t take the job then either Mayfield is having a breakout year and you hit the jackpot or both guys are really bad and we get a better draft in 2024. But Mayfield costs you no draft picks and has to sign a prove it deal in the market.

  28. Dooley Says:

    @1BUC76

We’ve got a solid core of young vets on the payroll, the doom and gloom talk is from the knee-jerky types that are using their opinions to predict the future. They’re the Ms.Cleo of Buc fans and instead of seeing how this plays out, because when you have a thirst to “be right” you’ll say and support anything no matter how thin the argument or line of logic you used to reach some of these pessimistic conclusions.

  29. SB~LV Says:

Trade every name that can bring in draft picks
It’s not fair to our favorites to have to suffer along with a rebuild franchise

  30. Seattle Buc is back in TB Says:

Get a young mobile, dual threat qb, someone who can throw and run for a first if he has to. Bucs should draft a QB and sign a vet both.

  31. Seattle Buc is back in TB Says:

Pick up a.new tackle and gaurd.

  32. Leopold Stotch Says:

I’ve heard coaches say that they have loved what they have seen from Trask. The truth is, he hasn’t gotten any meaningful practice reps because of Brady and Gabbert. They can’t honestly evaluate him. He’s also never had any reps with the first team, that I’m aware of. This is sounding like the Cotton Bowl his senior year. He had nobody that he played with all year during that game. Looked like crap, honestly lowered his draft stock probably, and definitely hurt his Heisman bid. I imagine we’ll see a healthy dose of Trask this off-season. He’s had 2 years learning, I expect great things from him.

  33. NEfan Says:

Leopold, not true, Joe posted earlier when the moron beanblo was throwing Manzel in his face. Joe’s had seen him in practice take reps with the first and 2nd stringers, end result, not so good. beanblo fails to acknowledge this fact.

  34. Defense Rules Says:

With only Kyle Trask under contract right now, Bucs will certainly add at least 2 more QBs prior to training camp, plus probably add 1 in the draft. Right now there are 37 QB free agents not named Tom Brady (I guess that Spotrac did get the word yet on TB12). A total of 30 of those are Blaine Gabbert’s age (33 or younger, and the highest paid of those was only $8.2 mil (Baker Mayfield). Majority (like Gabbert) were only making less than $3 mil.

None of them are franchise QBs IMO, but we don’t have the $$$ to afford a franchise QB anyways. Personally I’d re-sign Gabbert (he knows the players & the organization) plus 1 other (someone like Bridgewater maybe?) then see what the draft holds (more than likely nothing but you have to buy a ticket to win the lottery).

  35. rsjcheapseats Says:

The D is still good (sign Dean). Fix the OL and bring in a veteran to compete with Task and see who wins the job.

  36. Tampabaybucfan Says:

So…….Mike Evans made Joe’s favorite QB….Johnny Football look like an all-pro……..You would think he would do at least something for Kyle Trask….

Expecting Trask to look good with the third string vs Atlanta 1st string is like expecting Succop to look good on a 55 yard FG.

  37. Oneilbuc Says:

We need to give Trask a chance if he suck than just Draft a quarterback next year it’s that simple. Give him a running game and I think he will be ok . The part I hate is how some of yall judge him playing with the scout team and practice squad. Even in the preseason y’all seem to forget about the Dolphins game this year and the Texans game in 2021 those were the games he actually started most of the game. But I guess those games don’t count!!

  38. The Beer Whisperer Says:

I was gonna retire when Brady did. But my desire to post useless information, is still too strong.

  39. Redeemer Says:

How many games has Trask dressed for? The league and everyone in it is based on competition. If its true Trask didn’t get a shot because of some stupid philosophy, then shame on the bucs. Why wouldn’t you want to find out who the better backup is. It makes absolutely no sense. I think it’s much more likely that Trask just wasn’t good enough. They swung and missed. It happens. We’ll find out soon enough. Licht has to justify the pick. I still can’t believe they drafted him 64th, when they had obvious holes to fill on defense. Go look at some of the guys drafted around him. I am excited to see the kid play. Hope I’m dead wrong..
    .

  40. sasquatch Says:

Brissett would be a decent bridge QB. I am not a Trask believer. Draft a guy.

  41. Oneilbuc Says:

And again as long as Brady was on the team ain’t no young quarterback was going to get first team reps regardless who the young quarterback was.

  42. Oneilbuc Says:

And one more thing can y’all please stop with narrative Joe !! It was clear that it never was a quarterback competition the day he was drafted even the coaches told y’all that. So I don’t get the whole he couldn’t beat out Gabbert when the coaches said he wasn’t going to get the chance to beat out Gabbert!!

  43. Dooley Says:

    @Oneilbuc

If you think Bowles is going into 2023 with just one serviceable Qb after what he’s been through with the Jets, Tannenbaum, Darnold, and Fitzmagic you’re going to be dissapointed. Also, I’m fully against gifting the starting QB job to anybody as we as Buc fans have watched that method crash and burn repeatedly between 2009 & 2019. Freeman, a microdose of Josh Johnson, Glennon, McCown, and Winston? thats a big hell nah from me fam

  44. NEfan Says:

Really oneilsuckyall why? Joe said he took reps with the 1st team in practice and didn’t do well. So what does Brady have to do with this again? Garapolo was Brady’s backup and Hoyer was 3rd string.

  45. The Beer Whisperer Says:

How many regular NFL season snaps, has Trask taken?
    I see 10 snaps, from Pro-Football-Reference.

That seems like a very small sample size, to rate a QB.

But the arm-chair-QB’s will make a final judgement, regardless.

  46. Pryda sec 147 Says:

If our defense suck monkey booty hole then Bowels better be fired mid season. I will only cut him slack if it’s a rookie

  47. OrlandoBucFan Says:

Rod Munch, the issue with Winston was the turnovers. He is clearly a very talented quarterback with a rocket for an arm. Unfortunately, he was a turnover machine. I remember taking my son to the Chicago game in 2018 and telling my son after the first half debacle that the Bucs would start Winston in the second half, which they did, and he promptly threw an interception. There is a reason Winton’s not starting in New Orleans.

  48. Bucsfanman Says:

    “You don’t know what you don’t know…”

They have to have drafted Trask for a reason.

  49. NEfan Says:

The Beer Whisper@ how many 3rd string QB’s get a chance at all??? Not many. Purdy was an anomaly, plus Shanahan built an offense to protect him from turnovers. Do you actually believe Bowles and BL could do that?

  50. Blokneel Says:

    It’s Joes website numbnuz

  51. 80forBrady Says:

Look at the scrap heap of Mayfield, Winston, Mariotta, Darnell, Kaepernick, whomever and sign one (or two) on prove it contracts to compete with Gabbert and Trask and see what can be crafted.

  52. The Beer Whisperer Says:

NEfan is the ultimate expert. If he says something, the subject is settled, lol

NEfan, would argue with a fence-post, I suspect.

  53. Darin Says:

We all saw who just got fired. No way this is a not so hot seat season for Bowles. He knows that. He still won’t be able to coach his was out of his pink slip. He be who he be

  54. The Beer Whisperer Says:

NEfan, should carry his A-$$ back up to Boston.

Bill B. could use the help.

  55. Mike C Says:

    NEfan you can leave now……

  56. rrsrq Says:

I still think giving the salary cap issue, you likely have to go with Trask or an inexpensive Baker Mayfield or dare I say bring back Jaboo if you thinking of Monken. Chemistry with receivers already, had to learn some lessons sitting in N.O., but Carr or any other QB worth their salt is not giving TB a discount following up a legend

  57. The Beer Whisperer Says:

Bucs gotta bring in Monken, and get his opinion of QB’s

If QB was easy, I’d be doing it, lol

  58. YucsBall Says:

Bro all the reps went to TB12 what do you expect

  59. stpetebucfan Says:

If you compare Derek Carr and Baker Mayfield on the Stathead comparison chart they are VERY close statistically.

Both have made the playoffs only once…Carr had more years to do it.
Carr is 0-1 in the Playoffs…Mayfield is 1-1 with a very impressive win over the hated Steelers.

Of the “talented QB’s” available these two top my list but I certainly defer to the Bucs braintrust. I’m sure $$$ will have a lot to do with whomever the Bucs court.

But hey Shane Buechele played for 850,000 last season. At least we could afford him. LOL

  60. chark Says:

From a broncos message board..I have come to the conclusion that getting a really good coach is above and beyond the most important thing a franchise can do and then a good qb. Draft picks are overrated without good coaching nothing happens. You guys won many a game with Schlereth 10th rd and T davis 6th round. Think about it all the other positions become better with the 2 key ingredients, even the defense and its playcalling gets better because of good coach/qb marriage. Without good coach you do nothing. Look at when steve young was with the bucs. Stud high draft picks have withered and failed due to being on poorly coached teams. with availability of video/technology teams are able to dig around and find good serviceable players with a capable scouting dept. Look no further than bowles/leftwich and the bucs.

  61. The Beer Whisperer Says:

NEfan is a legend……. in his own mind.

  62. beano Says:

“He finds it telling there have been no rumblings out of One Buc Palace claiming Trask is a starting-caliber player.”

Neither were there rumblings out of the Atlanta Falcons claiming Favre was a starting-caliber player. On the contrary, the Falcons head coach, Jerry Glanville, openly stated he did not want them to draft Favre, did not like Favre, and told Favre he would never make it in the NFL.

So Shaun King saying what he said is “telling” of nothing.

  63. Aceofaerospace Says:

Well Jimmy G is now available, not officially, but SF says they are not resigning him. I’d rather have him (healthy) than Carr.

  64. mark2001 Says:

Joe… as I said this morning, Rodgers brought alot of buzz in Green Bay before Favre was ever traded. They were pretty darn sure, from his performance, that he had what it took to be a franchise QB. Brady created buzz. Trask hasn’t. It is a pretty obvious difference, not to be discounted.

  65. Defense Rules Says:

Chark … Agree with you on the importance of having really good coaches (who wouldn’t?), but I still wonder what Sean Payton’s record would be WITHOUT Drew Brees. Having a top quality FIELD GENERAL is essential. Just look at how Tom Brady’s leadership rubbed off on everyone who played with him.

  66. mark2001 Says:

Trask had two full years to make himself the undisputed favorite to replace Brady when that day came. We all knew it would come sooner or later. Did he do it? I think that says it all.

  67. Bucsalltheway Says:

I would take janeis back on the cheap…Mayfield a no.. Carr a no…statistically jameis hasn’t played much football compared to those guys and I think he’s better than anything available right now I hate to say…we could fix so much grabbing him cheap and at least be decent

  68. ocala Says:

Expecting Trask to look good with the third string vs Atlanta 1st string is like expecting Succop to look good on a 55 yard FG.

This is a poor take. The Bucs did sit some starters in the Atlanta game, but with a 53-man roster there is no third string..

  69. NEfan Says:

Beerfarts@ are you debating my comment? I just rebutted yours by stating the facts, not many if any 3rd string QB’s ever get game day snaps. I am sorry if that hurt you. I will be more gentle when replying to your posts going forward. The last thing I want to do is bring you to tears.

  70. Beej Says:

They didn’t wait for Tim Tebow to stink it up in the regular season, the best coaching minds in the NFL concluded he couldn’t play, and never allowed him to

  71. Defense Rules Says:

Aceofaerospace … Yes Jimmy G is available (so is Baker Mayfield) but do they represent the future? Bucs have tons of NEEDS right now (crummy DEPTH really means that almost none of those depth players are moving up to starter or key rotational player positions).

Seems like I remember a movie that could’ve been about the Bucs (‘Field of Dreams’ with the classic line ‘If you build it, they will come’). Well, IF we build a solid TEAM, with some semblance of BALANCE between the offense & the defense, there are a number of QBs who could run it. That was my takeaway BTW from San Fran’s 49ers this season … 4QBs in all & they still made the playoffs. And none of those QBs were what most would call ‘franchise QBs’.

  72. NEfan Says:

    I got you Joe
Ocala@ Joe has been at practices where Trask has taken snaps with the 1st & 2nd string and the results were not good. Many of you choose to ignore this tid bit fact and insist he should have played in
some select games. I to wish he started and played the entire KC, Cincy, SF & Dallas PO game.

  73. Tampabaybucfan Says:

So….we have significant cap issues…….we couldn’t achieve a winning season with Brady…..got blown out in the playoffs…

So, the plan is to spend a bunch of money on a QB and try again?

That is lunacy…….let’s give Trask a shot…..even a cheap FA will cost a bunch more.

Now, if losing was a Brady problem and not a team problem….then bringing in Jimmy G or Carr may work……For me, it was a coaching problem at the very top….so Trask won’t work, neither will anyone else…..so let;s go the inexpensive route.

And…..FYI Jaboo is under contract with the Saints….for $15,6 mil…..he is their problem…..and won’t be ours.

  74. Defense Rules Says:

TBBF … ‘And…..FYI Jaboo is under contract with the Saints….for $15,6 mil…..he is their problem…..and won’t be ours.’

Nice catch. Maybe those wanting Jameis back would be open to a trade though? I’m sure that most of them would go for a Trask for Jameis swap. So would the Saints BTW.

  75. Shooter Says:

What would you give up for Tray Lance? 49ers gave 2 1st and a 3rd.

  76. BucsFan81 Says:

I need to see Trask with actual starters and a half way decent offensive coordinator then we can judge him.

  77. Buccos Says:

I’m officially on the Trask bandwagon. We can’t afford anyone else and he has sat behind the GOAT for 2 years. He has paid his dues and hopefully learned a lot and now is his time to shine. He did the same thing at Florida so here we go.

  78. SOEbuc Says:

Bijan in the first round and Hooker if available in the second. TRASK IS PRACTICE SQUAD QUALITY QB and the only QB under contract.

Bandwagon doesn’t keep the faith and tanking is for p#ssies.

  79. SED14 Says:

I have a great idea to avoid a No Hot Seat Season next year for Low Energy Bowles – fire him now and save us all from having to watch him fumble bumble his way through another season of getting out coached and out smarted on a weekly basis. The man is massively uninspiring and so far in over his head it’s actually not fair to him.

  80. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Bowles has not probed worthy of investing in a quality QB…..he had his chance in 22 & blew it……
I would say that the new OC should have significant impact on the QB….FA or draft or Trask….if he doesn’t he will likely be ineffective.

Again…..Joe has never pointed out that if Trask is a bust already….then he was missed by Licht, BA, BL, Brady, Christensen & Moore….

That is a wealth of experience to miss on a draft pick…..

  81. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    significant input…..sorry.

  82. infomeplease Says:

You might want to wait until you have a new OC or preferably a new HC & OC and let them determine what available QB would be the best fit for their schemes!! Trask, since he’s under contract, will have a chance to show what he can or cannot do!

  83. infomeplease Says:

If Todd Bowles is still HC, after a year or two the Bucs should be able to get another top college QB from the draft!!

  84. SB~LV Says:

    Fire Bowles !

  85. The Beer Whisperer Says:

Kyle Trask, after throwing 9 passes, is obviously a bust.

  86. mark2001 Says:

Bucsall… Jameis didn’t work out for us after 5 years. He couldn’t command the starting job in NO after 2. If you want a career back up, Trask may be your man. But Jameis is certainly no better than that. You can’t afford to shat the bed even once in the playoffs or the season is over. And you never knew when Jameis was going to almost singlehandedly, give up a game.

  87. mark2001 Says:

Ignore everything we have heard and seen in practice and games on Trask. He is going to magically turn in on, like a caterpillar turning into a butterfly, and set the league on fire. Nice in dreams. But in reality… highly unlikely.

You must realize by now that his isn’t going to happen, at least not this year.

  89. #99 the Big fella Says:

I see , If you don’t agree with Rod munch you are a idiot and a moron!
    Got it!

  90. sasquatch Says:

I’m not interested in seeing Trask start. He excites no one. The only thing you ever hear is that he’s a hard worker. He has to work so hard because he’s not a fast learner. A good QB needs to be able to process information quickly.

Nobody at OBP was banging the table to move him up the depth chart, most notably the QB coach. He’s the most dull and boring option I can imagine.

Draft a QB that has some movement ability.

  91. T REX Says:

Winston went out with the morning trash.

    Good riddance. Dude is broken

Now that he’s retired and doesn’t have to spout the Company line, I’m sure many of us JBF’ers (is that a dirty word? LOL) would love to know what Clyde Christensen has to say about one Kyle Trask.

We want to know what we got, or don’t got. What’s the word, Clyde?

  93. mark2001 Says:

Beej. I think almost everyone told Tim Tebow he wasn’t going to be able to play QB at a starting level in the NFL. He basically prayed about it, had faith they were all wrong, and ended up with a short career in the league because what they said was the way it was. He might have been an above average TE. But sometimes you have to figure that miracles won’t often happen, and accept what you have.

  94. adam from ny Says:

    and that’s not bad…for a bit…

it could be hard to go from the goat to trask…and nothing against trask…but come on, we had the goat and like 8 primetime games or national games a year…not including the playoffs…

it’s a bad look to go from the “new america’s team” to a head scratching viral meme…

the bucs have leveled up, but now you gotta ride that wave…or you sink

  97. mark2001 Says:

D-Rik. If you got Clyde full of Bromosa’s, you might get it out of him. But these guys usually don’t want to burn any possible bridges and won’t tell us. It would be something to know what anyone strongly connected to the Kyle Trask Experience thinks.

  98. mark2001 Says:

Adam. Don’t discount NO. They just got a couple more high draft picks for Payton. Along with their own. And they are in a position to be just as good or better than we are with a good QB. And NC, except for the D foul ups that let Evans burn them three times, is pretty good. ATL? I don’t know. But I think our division will be very competitive next year. Just not really good like the NFC East or maybe even the NFC Central.

  99. The Beer Whisperer Says:

from where we stand right now at this exact present moment, if we go 10-7 next year, that would be one hell of a season…

sheesh…bowles would be in the running for coach of the year too

  102. orlbucfan Says:

C’mon, DR, Bucs had a solid team talent wise on both sides of the ball when they won the SB. All they needed was a QB that didn’t turn the ball over 500 times. Winston was a bust. They didn’t need Brady and all his soap opera plus demanding Gronkowski and that nutcase Brown. What a load that was! We still don’t know about Trask and Bowles. Screw the cap. The YouTube deal will give the idiot owners more dough to play with.

  103. Tackleblockwin Says:

  113. beano Says:

D-Rok Says: “Would love to know what Clyde Christensen has to say about one Kyle Trask.”

Doesn’t matter what he says. Would be just words, with as much weight as Falcon coach Jerry Glanville’s words when he said Favre sucks and will never make it in the NFL.

Christensen and his colleagues were too stupid to play Trask with the first team at any time during the preseason or the regular season, so neither he nor anyone else really knows.

Look at all the backup QBs who this season got their chance with their first team when their quarterback #1 went down. They all shined. That terrifies the Trask haters. That’s why you never saw any of them say “Play Trask with the first team”.

  114. Buc4evr Says:

The Bucs have never developed a rookie QB , ever ! They are not going to start with Trask. If he starts next year look for 2 to 4 wins max. He wasn’t that good at UF and he didn’t show much against Atlanta. IMHO he was just another wasted draft pick. Bucs need to get another proven veteran if possible.

  115. chark Says:

That’s the only way Bowles stands a chance to win and keep his job. Suh is playing in another Superbowl. The proof’s in the pudding. The Bucs need quality line play….on both sides of the ball. Hopefully they can manage the cap well.

Brother D-Rok, I can tell you exactly what Clyde thinks. Trask sucks!! Oneilbuc you obviously don’t understand how the NFL works. If like you claim, Trask didn’t get a fair look, then it’s an epic failure by the organization and a slap in the face to THEIR SECOND ROUND PICK. Anyone drafted that high, especially a QB gets a chance to prove himself. What about the 11 days Brady missed in camp. Your telling me they didn’t take that opportunity to evaluate what they had? No sir. Their evaluation, not mine tells you all you need to know. I swear, some of you are happy to eat the company line and never think for yourselves.

  122. chark Says:

    Bucs + Dalton/ Bennett

  123. Goatfarmer Says:

Excellent post Redeemer. Sadly there is a disconnect between reality, what the Osqueeler sees, and then what his walnut sized brain can process.

I’m a Florida Gator fan as long as I’m a Bucs fan. There’s never been a Gator QB who has come into the NFL and been anything more than below average. Rex Grossman? LOL!!! Brissett and Driskell are both better than thei peers, but they weren’t really Gator starters. A guy named Cam Newton transferred to Auburn because the Gators had Tebow/ No denying Tebow was an ourstanding college player but not NFL material.

There are some things that are not meant to be.

Bucs drafting and developing a QB is one, Gators producing an NFL star QB is another, and Bucs successful engaging in a rebuild over 3-5 seasons is third.

All these truths make me wonder where my tranquilizers are?!

  124. Defense Rules Says:

orlbucfan … ‘Bucs had a solid team talent wise on both sides of the ball when they won the SB. All they needed was a QB that didn’t turn the ball over 500 times.’

So IF that’s the case, ANY NFL QB would’ve gotten us a SB just like Brady did in 2020 because none of them ‘turn the ball over 500 times’. Come to think of it, neither idd Jameis. Exaggerate much?

Coincident with Brady coming onboard in 2020, so did Wirfs, Winfield, Fournette, Gronk, AB (and several others). Wirfs & Winfield were both quality starters as rookies (at positions that had been weak). Fournette, Gronk & AB accounted for over 1700 yards & 17 TDs in 2020 (in only 37 games among the 3 of them).

So we replaced almost HALF of our offense … FIVE players … in 2020 (Brady, Wirfs, Fournette, Gronk & Brown) and you’re telling me that the 2019 team that went 7-9 was just as talented except for the QB? Got it.

  125. beano Says:

Buc4evr Says: “Trask wasn’t that good at UF.”

LMAO. What an ignoramus. Trask was lights out at UF in 2019 and 2020. He holds all the UF passing records and many SEC passing records. He’s the best quarterback to ever play at UF. Look it up and inform yourself, because you sure as hell are not informed now.

Trask in fact was on pace in 2020 to beat Burrow’s SEC season records set in 2019, but Trask in 2020 had a COVID-shortened 10 game season against all SEC teams (all 10 opponents were SEC teams). Burrow set his records in 2019 playing 12 games only 8 of which were SEC opponents (4 were against patsy teams that helped pad stats).

You Trask haters need to take off your FSU jerseys. LMAO.

Great collage QB when the widows are 5 yards and the talent gap is astronomical. Defense good point too. If anyone believes another QB could’ve come here and won that Superbowl, you’re dreaming. Brady set an example of excellence that permeated the entire team. While I’ll admit he had lots of help, he also was responsible for recruiting several key players. I don’t want to go back to lovable loser status.

Brady is a complete outlier, and should be exempt from any example involving other QBs, especially Trask. Why does everyone feel compelled to compare someone’s possible trajectory to Brady? There’s only one GOAT. Compare Trask’s situation to anyone but Brady.

Jordan Love and Trask are in the same draft class. Love has been backing up Rodgers, meanwhile Trask doesn’t dress most games. Love has improved so much that the team possibly move off the great Aaron Rodgers.

The Atlanta game just highlighted the issues with Trask. His velocity is lacking, he has a slow release, and was late on throws. Maybe he improve. Brady at his older age has more velocity on his passes than Trask. I say let Trask compete in training camp. He’s at least earned that right.

@sasquatch – you are likely correct, but perhaps there is a slim possibility that “the brass” will come to the realization that Bowels is the reason they cannot attract a quality OC and adjust the game plan accordingly.

We don’t know yet about attracting a quality OC. Monken is quality and he might be the guy. And a few of the younger, less experienced coordinator candidates are intriguing. I’m still confident they’ll hire someone good.

So, I think your assertion is false. If anything, the reason that our OC position may be less desirable is because of the unknown QB situation. If the candidates are afraid of a hotseat HC, well that’s the NFL… Ya know what though? Ownership that has a tendency to pull the plug prematurely (like after one year) give the organization an awful reputation for hiring ANYONE in the future… So we don’t really wanna go down that path.

The main things that sunk the Bucs season don’t have anything to do with Bowles:
    1) Brady personal struggles, apparent diminishment of focus, and physically not as prepared as he used to be.
    2) Leftwich was lost as an OC without Daddy Bruce.
    3) The offensive staff as a whole failing to adapt the offense to be more diverse, less predictable, and able to run the ball effectively.
    4) Unusual turnover of the O-line, injuries, shuffling, and rookie growing pains
    5) Injury to Gage
    6) Godwin not quite up to 100%
    7) Failure to maximize Mike Evans
    8) Loss of Gronkowski
    9) Failure of free agents like Julio and Rudolph to make an impact.

All those things taken into account, getting to 8-9 may have actually been an accomplishment. I think Bowles deserves another year with coaches he has a hand in picking.

Exactly how is something that hasn’t even happened yet FACT? We have no idea who our OC will be, who our QB will be, what FAs will be returning or signed from some other team, or what players we’ll be drafting. The UNKNOWNS outweigh the KNOWNS as of right now.

Whatever you (and many others) think of Todd Bowles, I’d personally rather have him rebuilding this defense than the UNKNOWN DC who’s behind Door #2. Go back and look at what he started with when he came in in 2019, then check 2020 (I believe it ended with a SB victory?). This season to me represents a ‘get right year’. Whether you believe it or not, our TEAM is a hot mess right now, but some parts are ‘workable’. Todd Bowles didn’t create this salary CAP mess or this personnel mess, but he’s the one who has to deal with it. None of us know for sure how that’ll play out at this point, but the ride could be fascinating. Have some patience.

  148. sasquatch Says:

  149. steele Says:

The tragedy of Todd Bowles’ head coaching fiasco, the gross team mismanagement that continues, is that it tarnished the legacy of the greatest QB. It was Brady’s own fault that he didn’t retire as he was hoisting the Lombardi two years ago. That would have been perfection. But he just had to play, because he loves a game that he is addicted to, and especially his addiction to the challenge. Hanging it up after nearly singlehandedly beating the Rams would have been a good exit as well, but still, he couldn’t stay away.

Leave it to Bowles and the host of problems left unaddressed for 2 seasons, and new ones that fielded a subpar team, for leaving Brady without the all-in that his final season deserved.

I still believe that Brady would still have had a shot, in the right situation. Going back to the San Francisco to mentor Brock Purdy, and be part of a legit Super Bowl contender again, would have been a nice bookend. Once again, it sounds like Shanahan didn’t want it,and they are banking on Purdy to heal miraculously.

If the Bucs were the only alternative to retirement, I’d have picked retirement and a nice Fox TV job too.

    Adios, GOAT.

  150. adam from ny Says:

monken is or was in play for only 2 reasons:

    – he told the bucs he will come here to coach brady, and it’s all off the table now that tom retired

    – he comes here because he knows bowles isn’t too good, is going into the season on an already hot seat, and is scheming on the HC job

  151. steele Says:

Dredging up our dossiers on Trask, what do we have? Look at all of the available film from every game he’s played. He is exactly what he is, a mixed bag, a mess. If he had shown more, he would have challenged for either the start, or at least taken Gabbert’s backup job definitively. Give him the starters, it wouldn’t make much of a difference. His mechanics, his processing, his throws. It doesn’t matter how much hot air this regime spews about him and guys like Hainsey. Top NFL starter? He hasn’t shown it.

But let’s see. It’s time right now. Put him out there.

I expect they will sign a veteran. Maybe draft.

  152. Capt.Tim Says:

We will have Bowles as a coach, so we will suck this year.
But we still have talent on the team. We should bring in the critical pieces we need to contend again. Draft well,?and let the rookies play in a lost year.
We need to draft a LT, Edge rusher, Cornerback.
Lose the guys we signed, just to support Brady.
Kick the tires on a few QBs like Garaffalo, Mayfield. Both can still win in this league. Lets see them with our new coordinator.
I said 3 years, Aaron Rodgers would follow Tom Brady to Tampa, once Brady retired. Still a decent possibility.

And enjoy those cheap tickets, until we can replace Bowles. Nice guy, great DC.
Just not a good head coach

  153. gp Says:

    SAS
All of the things you listed are things that all teams deal with year in and year out with the possible exceptions of two and three. Those are the purview of the head coach. It is his responsibility to keep the coordinators on the same page. It is his job to make sure that the team has a plan for each opponent.

What I saw last year was ONE singular game plan that he seemed to expect to work for all opponents. Both on offense and defense.
Maybe he will see the light and learn to study tape to game plan for each game, but he hasn’t shown that ability to me yet.

As long as we are predictable, we will lose more than we win, regardless of who is on the field.

  154. Matt Says:

The goal is to win the Super Bowl

It’s not to win a crappy division.

    It’s easy:

What gets us to a SB faster. Starting Trask, Carr, JG, or Baker?

It’s easily Trask. Those others are known commodities. They are known to be mediocre but not awful.

Trask has the chance, albeit very small to be good. That’s a greater chance than any of those other guys

Trask also has a greater chance at being awful. This is a good thing. It makes it easy to get away from.

If Carr is below average but not awful and we finish 7-10 then what?

  155. Whoolio? Says:

I think it’s pretty simple. Bucs have no cap room and must cut 30 mil in cap after bradys retirement. D Smith is gone. Brate is gone. Lenny is gone. Half the defense is gone to free agency. Evans is starting to slow down.. Regardless of the QB, we are not winning a SB, which is all that matters. That means give Trask a chance and see how he develops. If he surprises and wins some games we have a possible QB of the future. If he’s as bad as it seems from his extremely limited sample size and lack of support from the team, you let him lose and collapse for Caleb. This season is about being preparing to compete for a SB 3 or 4 years down the line with high draft picks and getting the salary cap right. Expecting anything more from next season is pure ignorance.

  156. Goatfarmer Says:

Hey beanblo, thanks for reinforcing the point – and your contrary argument is “until” (and names a bunch of Tier 4 girls colleges good at synchronized swimming). Florida’s “until” has never happened, and surely won’t with this fine Real Estate Agent who currently wears #2 for the Bucs. Beanblo, your fascination with Trashk is admirable, and proves you know more about beans than you do about football.

  157. steele Says:

The 2023 QB draft class is mediocre to poor. Full of “dual threat” Lamar Jackson wannabes. Will Levis has a huge arm, and whoever gets him probably gets the only bigtime prospect this year. Otherwise, unless you get lucky with some Purdy type unknown, it’s 2024 for QB.

Love him or hate him, Trask needs to be pushed out there as soon as possible, and evaluated. Do it, end the debate. If he is as bad as he’s looked in limited action so far, a bridge free agent will have to be brought in anyway. Now what would attract anyone of high caliber to this miserable Bowles team, besides Florida and sunshine? It would be hard to lure anyone to be the QB during a bottoming out period, still on the downside.

  158. David Says:

Give Trask chance to compete after two years of watching and not playing and bring on Derek Carr or Baker M. or draft any qb’s you want. He will beat them all. That’s what he has done all along his high school and college to come off the bench to become a star.
