Dave Canales Bringing A Coach With Him To Tampa Bay

February 16th, 2023

Bucs WR coach Brad Idzik.

It seems new Bucs offensive coordinator Dave Canales won’t be alone moving from Seattle to Tampa.

Per Brady Henderson of BSPN, it seems Seattle general manager John Schneider, speaking on a Seattle sports radio station earlier today, noted Canales will bring Seahawks wide receivers coach Brad Idzik with him to the Bucs.

If the last name of “Idzik” sounds familiar, it is for Joe as well. For good reason. His dad, John, was a long-time NFL suit with the Bucs during much of the Rick McKay regime from 1993-2004. John Idzik later became a shot-caller for the Jets.

Interestingly, Bucs coach Todd Bowles was hired as the Jets coach by Idzik’s successor there Mike Maccagnan.

The younger Idzik’s resume is thin. He joined Seattle in 2019 as a quality control coach/assistant quarterbacks coach. After a year, he moved to assistant wide receivers coach and two seasons ago took charge of the wide receivers room in Seattle.

Prior to joining Seattle in 2019, Idzik spent five seasons as a grad assistant at Stanford.

Idzik’s grandfather, John, Sr., spent three decades coaching in college, the CFL and NFL.

If Canales is smart he will spend as much time as he can with Arians and get Arians to help him in his OC development!

  2. Thisisouryear!! Says:

I think Arians could be an awesome mentor but i don’t think that’s the offense Bowles wants to run.

  3. Craig Says:

I don’t have a problem with coaches with a thin resume. All coaches had one at one time or another.

If they can think outside the box and make this team look better, maybe even good, it is great.

Too many coaches that are stuck in the mud have been recycled, so starting kind of fresh might be a good thing.

  4. DoooshLaRue Says:

2 new coaches, neither wearing a flat bill.

    Things are looking up.

Bank on it. BA is need a PR rehab fo sho, ya know cuz kid be like ya know, need some help on thing other than speach

  6. IE Buc Says:

Canales was hired to bring his own offense and ideas to the Bucs in implementing Bowles vision. He should have free reign to remake the Bucs offensive staff. Arians had his time. If Arians had something to say on offense they wouldn’t have gone in a new direction

  7. CrackWise Says:

    IE Buc

True BUT Leftnut was incapable of speaking and understanding the ENGLISH language. BA got hood winked by Leftnut FOR SURE.

BA will 100% help the new OC as that is his job at this point!!! He prolly hand picked Canales for Todd because Todd was in need of help.

UNLIKE Leftnut, Todd listens to the people that want to help him. Leftnut, well, I am sure BA signed off on FIREING his DUMBASRSE

  8. Tye Says:

With the cap the way it is, I wonder if he may lure Drew Locke To Tampa and have a qb competition with Trask…
Cheaper than the top free agents and Locke knows much of the plays Canales knows!

  9. sasquatch Says:

BA is an assistant to Licht. He doesn’t “sign off” on any coaching staff decisions.

It doesn’t mean he’s not a resource, for instance if Canales wanted input on best approaches for developing his own playbook (process, not plays).

  10. Kgh4life Says:

    @Tye
Why the hell would Canales ask BA for help? They come from completely different offensive systems, so BA wouldn’t know the ins and outs of a Canales offense. Finally, if your new OC needs help implementing an offense, then Licht and Bowles picked the wrong guy.

  11. Marine Buc Says:

I wonder if Canales will coach the QBs and handle the OC duties as well…

I’m glad to see this staff is finally getting erected.

    Go Bucs!

I don’t agree. I mean, it’s a matter of how much help we’re talking about. If there are some process things or advice here and there, I see no problem with using all the resources at his disposal. Everyone leans on the experience of others when stepping into a new role for the first time. It’s only a problem if the job isn’t being done.

Sounds like he at least comes with some pedigree, some legacy.

Bucs made an under-the-radar reserve/futures signing on Jan 25:
    Jake Verity K

Came into the league in 2021 out of E. Carolina – went to Baltimore in preseason and kicked well, but was behind Justin Tucker.

Spent last season on injured reserve in Jax.

    Known for big leg.

He has a chance, especially since they signed him so soon after the season. Seems they’re interested in him and Bowles has expressed a desire to get a bigger leg out there. We shall see.

    @Goatfu©ker,
Dumb is not knowing how to spell denier.

  27. MadMax Says:

  28. Goatfarmer Says:

    @Sastw@t –

Good for you, now the genius optimist. Who deny the inevitable, hence becoming part of the deniers cult. There, feel better?

How many wins in 2023? C’mon smart girl.

  29. MadMax Says:

Ok its settled, just looked him up, Verity is our guy….we have to save where we can

  30. sasquatch Says:

    @Goatfu©ker,

Objecting to default negativity doesn’t make me an optimist any more than being a mindless critic makes you smart.

I only say why not just be open minded to see what happens? What’s the point of sh!tting on everything before we even get to see it play out? So you can see the future? I mean it’s not like Canales isn’t qualified. He’s as qualified as plenty of the other trendier candidates were.

Does it make you feel smart to spew nothing but negativity?

  31. Bucfan94 Says:

Whatever happens happens. If we suck, then we likely have a good shot at Caleb Next year, with more cap space and a new staff. If things work out, then we can use the extra cap relief to further improve. I’m not too concerned. We know a rebuild was likely to happen without Brady and BA. All we can do is watch and see what happens. None of us can see the future. We never expected the Eagles to go 14-3 and go to the SB.

  32. BillyBucco Says:

    The guy was at Stanford
    I think Lefty chose Samford.

Sounds like it when he speaks.
This guy must have had tutors out the wazoo in order to just graduate.

  33. BillyBucco Says:

Prolly thought he was at Stanford the whole time.

  34. Goatfarmer Says:

    A$$quatch.

There are data. They indicate a few things.

    1. Toad’s Bowels is a losing head coich in 4 out of 5 seasons, and 4 in a row.

    2. He oversaw a team that had won 29 games in 2 seasons, including 5 playoff games, and reduced it to a laughing stock who couldn’t beat anyone good, a losing record, a humiliating defeat in a playoff game he did not deserve to be in, with Tom Brady, ME, CG12, Gage, Julio, Wirfs and Mason (and don’t start with “but injuries” — everyone had them. The Bengals thrived with their backups. Coaching matters.)

    3. The above includes the most precipitous (means “really big) season-to-season drop in point production in league history, despite a loaded roster, and oh yeah, Tom Brady at QB.

    4. His defense is the big talking 3rd grader who beats up on kids smaller than himself, but as soon as someone his own size comes along, gets his a$$quatch handed to him.

And now…….the A$$quatch solution is to run more despite no run game capability, and be happy with a neophyte who was demoted from passing game coordinator to QB coich following Russell Wilson’s departure, who has never played the position, and who has never called a play in an NFL game.

    OK, sunshine!

    Let’s go!!!

You’re right. There is every reason to be positive. If you’ve been inhaling glue in a closed space for the last months and lived to wake up from the coma.

  35. sasquatch Says:

@Goatfu©ker still apparently lacks basic language comprehension and logic. Being open minded and willing to see what happens without pre-judging and pretending to be a smart guy isn’t the same thing as being positive. It’s called not being a negative asshole and admitting I don’t know how things are going to turn out. Incidentally, neither do you.

    Assholes gonna asshole.

  36. sasquatch Says:

@Goatfu©ker just prefers to be a miserable prick and sh!t on everything. Your family must love you.

  37. MadMax Says:

Knock it off kiddos, get over it lol

Will Lovie, I mean bowles, actually allow him to call the plays!

We will see who is right, and who is wrong about our new OC. I think most of us hope for the best. Gf and SAS. I like both you posters. But don’t think anyone will be convinced to any extent that would really mean anything. Maybe I’m mellowing in my older age. LOL.

YES! It worked wonders for Leftwich.

Welcome to Tampa Bay, too our new coaches.

Wow, do I not long for those days of old here on JBF. When posters showed each others’ views a little respect. I too am also older now. But this is unfortunately the societal and national attitude most all people have for others’ “opinions”. As I heard it all my life “opinions are like arseholes everyone has one, some are just bigger and louder than others”.

This is like a daily spewage of bad romper room antics.

Let us all hope that our new OC and any people he brings on as assistants for “Our Team” does not read the constant drivel on these JBF posts.

    Go!!!!! Bucs!!!!!

How much coaching do Evans and Godwin need if the Bucs are going to hand the ball off 50 times a game? Prob should hire a dedicated punter coach.
