Chucky, Derek Carr And The Bucs

February 14th, 2023

“Brad, do you believe what they did to me? I gave this team everything I had for seven years.”

Three-time Pro Bowl quarterback Derek Carr is about two hours from getting cut by the Raiders and hitting the free agent market.

There’s definitely a sect of Bucs fans that would be elated to sign Carr. The Bucs could do a lot worse than a durable and solid starter about to turn 32 years old.

One intriguing thing about Carr is his close friendship with Jon Gruden, who was canceled by the NFL and by Team Glazer during the 2021 season. Carr was happy to vocalize his closeness to Chucky even after the league turned Chucky into the NFL’s version of a convicted felon.

So Joe wonders, if Carr is interested in Tampa Bay, and general manager Jason Licht wants to talk, what would Chucky advise Carr about playing in Tampa?

Would Chucky tell Carr to stay away because he’s bitter at Team Glazer for yanking him out of the Ring of Honor while the Bucs simultaneously sold Antonio Brown jerseys?

Adding intrigue to the whole situation is Chucky and Licht sharing the same agent, to the best of Joe’s knowledge, and Chucky still living in Tampa. There’s certainly a realistic shot that Chucky already is selling the virtues of Carr to Licht and wanting his quarterback friend in town.

It’s easy to say the Bucs have no salary cap room to afford Carr, but that’s a weak take without knowing what Carr actually wants. So Joe is not writing Carr off, who would probably drool knowing he could play with Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, and three beasts on his offensive line.

Joe is not lobbying for Carr, but Joe does expect the Bucs to explore the opportunity thoroughly.

Not happening. Per several reports around the web, (I literally just googled this) the Bucs are not even on this dudes radar.

  2. NEfan Says:

AB self destructed, he didn’t attack anyone else, except BA who provoked him and help crush the 2021 season.

  3. BrianBucs Says:

    Joe
Which 3 beasts on the offensive line? I only know of 2.
Regardless, Carr would demand a good amount of money and several teams may get into a bidding war for his services.
Bucs should bring in a couple of cheaper free agents to compete with Trask .
If that blows up then draft your future franchise QB in 2024 because that draft will be loaded with QB talent and hopefully Bowles will be gone by then.

  4. NEfan Says:

Mayfield, get his for $10 mil & incentives.

  5. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Saw the headline and thought we solved two problems at the same time……Carr at QB and Chucky replacing Bowles at HC……

Put Gruden back in the Ring……..Buc SB winning coach should trump all….

  6. Tye Says:

The NFL gave Mike Vick a ‘reprieve’….
Deshaun Watson is still in the league, Jameis Winston, and I’m sure there are others who have done despicable things and still employed…

Carr as QB and Gruden as OC…. Nobody else seems to want it and Gruden might so he can resurrect his career!…

  7. Mike C Says:

    Johnw1c5, thanks…

  8. Mike C Says:

NE fan…… THANKS……. the door is that way.

  9. DoooshLaRue Says:

If you do advise Carr, Chuckie, please do it in person or by phone.

For the love of Go(o)d-ell ……. don’t email him.

  10. YucsBall Says:

    I’d like Mayfield over Carr.

  11. SB~LV Says:

    Sell the team!

  12. Marine Buc Says:

I see John Gruden and Mark Davis have the same barber… lol

  13. BuxfaninTX Says:

    Gruden for new OC…..

  14. D-Rok Says:

    @Tye,

My wife and I rescue dogs so we found what Vick did to be reprehensible. Inexcusable, and obviously criminal. We detested him for years. Then we watched a documentary on him, and we’ve since changed our minds.

He did his time, and became an advocate for several animal rights groups. When he came back in the league, I felt he had been rehabilitated, he did his sentence, and worked hard to change his image, so I’ve learned to forgive him.

I can’t say the same for the Watsons and Rices of the league, however. Completely different, and so is the case of Gruden. How does that old saying go – “Sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me?” My point is what Gruden did, although in poor taste and wrong, just isn’t the same as actually hurting someone. Gruden may get another chance, but it probably will take a few years – – but probably not in Tampa due to the Glazers.

  15. Zippy Foonman Says:

Chucky won a Super Bowl, with a team Tony Dungy and Rich McKay built. After the Super Bowl win,. the Bucs quickly went downhill. They couldn’t draft during Chucky’s reign, and he was willing to overpay old vets who should have retired. There’s a lot of talent on this team, even if several free agents go. Don’t know the answer re: quarterback, but I’d like a veteran in the mix – maybe Mayfield or Brissett. Lack of knowing who the QB will be is very likely the reason it’s taken so long to find an Offensive Coordinator.

  16. Jimmy Deliono Says:

geez. For the millionirh time, trask is the started next year. That was always the plan with pushing back Brady’s salary. Enough already.

  17. SlyPirate Says:

HOW DID THE BUCS WIN THE SUPER BOWL in 2002 and 2020?

    1. Establish a solid OL and DL
    2. Fill in defensive skill positions
    3. Load up on WR

    Then …
    4. Get a veteran QB

The Bucs have a lot of work before getting a QB

  18. Alanbucsfan Says:

Is it becoming obvious that the whole “Bowles never got a chance to build his own coaching staff” narrative was BS?-
He either didn’t have anyone lined up or he’s having a hard time making up his mind or having a hard time convincing candidates to work with this team.

  19. Capece is Kaput Says:

The 3 beasts. Joe would have to confirm. We know 2. That would be Jensen and Wirfs. #3 – Donovan?? or Mason?? Joe seems to have a thing for Mason.
    I say it is Mason.

  20. Dooley Says:

    @AlanBucsfan

He got hired as HC in March, that’s late af to get an HC gig and even later to start piecing together an entirely new staff. It’s reality, and sometimes reality can be BS.

  21. NEfan Says:

Mike C. This team is like a car accident, you don’t want to look but you can’t help it. Gotta see how this dumpster show turns out.

  22. HC Grover Says:

Nooo…Oh Nooooo…we do not need a QB we need a Head Coach. Are they that stupid?

  23. BUC CHEEKS Says:

    Carr Has been Released

  24. Beeej Says:

Shaq had 1200 snaps, two penalties and one sack, pff 59 (which was higher than Suh in 21)

  25. Eric Says:

get Carr and then Jacobs from the raiders.

    Bring Chucky back as OC.

    NFC South champs.

  26. Warren Says:

wlhb93@gmail.com John gruden is one of the greatest coaches to ever coach in the NFL people were just jealous of his contract with the raiders people always turn things around that someone says because there jealous sorry it happen to such a great coach but there’s a lot of players and coaches alike know he is not what he was made out to be but folks will always make a mountan out of a mole hill

  27. HC Grover Says:

Carr will go to Atlanta or Carolina.

  28. Redeemer Says:

Brother D-Rok, couldn’t have said it better myself. I have two rescue golden retrievers from a puppy mill. The best dogs in the world. It took a while, but they love people. It’s the person, not the dog who is bad.
What happened to gruden was nothing more than a hit job. They tried to twist his words to fit a narrative. When he said certain things, it was how he described many people. Don’t wanna get in trouble here, so I’ll leave it at that bless you and Mrs. D for doing what you did. Love u for that my brother.

  29. covertwo22 Says:

We gotta try out Trask. Good way to get through cap hell. Trade D. Smith, cut Barrett, Gage, Brate and Fournette. Re-sign David, Gholston, Dean. let everyone else walk.
It’ll hurt but it’ll still be a solid team. Stong draft and solid play from Trask and this team can still compete for the playoffs.

  30. NYbucsfan Says:

How many playoff wins does he have?

  31. Kenny Says:

Bucs are not going anywhere with Bowles as Headcoach. They wont win more than 4 games next season. We need a SPARK and Bowles is a dud. New Headcoach, Bucs make playoffs.

  32. D-Rok Says:

    Redeemer,

Thank you for rescuing those goldens. You see, animals, like children, are innocent, and I applaud you, sir.

If only more people would tune in to their inner humanity and realize it’s critical to a society to protect the innocents – the children, the animals, the elders. Those groups need advocates to speak on their behalf, and dare I say, ACT on their behalf, because they are incapable of defending themselves.

Good stuff, brother. Much love back to you.

  33. Adamant Says:

I say hire Chucky as OC and bring in Carr. Dump all other high priced older players. Go young as much as possible.

  34. Duane Says:

Carr would be the best qb in the division, and likely a playoff appearance. Bowles is the defensive genius, let him work with the draft picks on that side of the ball. You pay for game changers on the defensive side of the ball. LVD at a good price is money well spent, but Dean does not change the game, and who knows what we get from injured gamechanger that we do pay. Not too sexy, but we still get to put it to the Saints, Panthers, and Dirty Birds.

  35. Jack Clark Says:

Amazing how quickly the Eagles OC and DC got hired as head coaches when Eric Bieniemy is still stuck being a two time winning Super Bowl OC

  36. Esteban85 Says:

Did this dude seriously just say AB didn’t attack anyone?! Get outta here NEfan

  37. Jack Clark Says:

If Antonio Brown didn’t sabotage his NFL career and Tristan Wirfs didn’t get injured then we would have won TWO Super Bowls with Tom Brady

  38. catcard202 Says:

The FO wants to be publicly linked to several FA / trade QB’s but likely do not get in on anyone of substance…That way it looks like they trying but really aren’t in that top tier market.

Could totally see Bucs ending up with Drew Lock / Jacoby Brissett combo to compete with Trask for QB1 & have <$10M invested in 2023 cap space on whole room.

  39. Esteban85 Says:

We don’t need Carr. Would rather build this team and spend that money elsewhere

  40. geno711 Says:

DRok. Well said on Gruden and Vick.

My thoughts on dogs. Dogs just like people have a nature.

    Just like people nurturing matters.

Which is more important in the end, nature or nurture? They are equally important.

My 57 pound mix (Alabama rescue that was scared of gun shots) and I did a 1 and 1/2 hour walk today on the Upper Tampa Bay trail. Many people approach him because he looks happy/content. He loves it and leans into the people as they pet him.

But he can also sometimes be either protective and/or anxious. I am always alert but he certainly could (and has a few times in our lives) act in manners that I am not happy with. He can be surprised (and react) by someone moving too quickly to pet him because he does have a little more of that protective/anxious personality compared to some of the other dogs I have owned.

By the way, I am so jealous of my dog. At 1 and 1/2, he weighed 57 pounds and at 10 and 1/2, he weighs 57 pounds. Plus, his blood work is perfect.

  41. Joe Says:

I say hire Chucky as OC and bring in Carr.

There is just no way the Glazerz would allow Todd Bowles to bring in Chucky. Just NO WAY.

And Joe seriously doubts Chucky would ever want to work for the Bucs again unless the team is sold.

  42. BA’s Red Pen Says:

Chucky is eternally butt hurt because he got fired F him and the rest of the keyboard tuff guys.

  43. mark2001 Says:

Don’t be shocked if Carr goes to NO. His entire move might be to stick LV with no draft compensation. He may already have some backroom plan on a contract… or he figures he can do quite well negotiating with multiple teams in the league.

  44. mark2001 Says:

BTW…this is what Derek Carr said. Ask yourself…does this sound like us?

I want to play for) a team that’s all in on winning the Super Bowl. I think that, to me, I just want to win. I’ve thrown for the numbers. Been to the Pro Bowls. … For me, I’m just looking for a team that has the pieces, and if I was to add to anything that I could add, hopefully we could be one of those teams to try and go do that.”

  45. TankforCaleb Says:

Canceled LOL! Pretty sure if I called the owner of my company a c&$@!%#cker I wouldn’t be nominated for employee of the month award, let alone be in the company’s ROH.

  46. Winny Testaverde Says:

I’m all for Used Carr going to Sewer City N.O. He’s gone to the Pro Bowl as a 4th alternate when the big boys bowed out or were Super Bowl bound. He’s unclutch and awfully geeky. Just say no Bucs. Stick to The Trask at hand.

  47. D-Rok Says:

    geno,

I have a similar dog right now, a rescue named Daisy. At one point, Mrs. D-Rok and I had 6 rescues in the house! That was a lot of work given by us, and a LOT of love given back by those 6. Now, years later, those 6 have been whittled down to 1 – we lost 5 dogs in our pack the last 3-4 years.

Daisy is a pittie rescue, she’s only 40 pounds ( a mini-Pitt, they call the breed) and she chose ME in the pound. She’d been there for over a year and nobody wanted her, but she jumped right in my lap that first day at the pound, and really, she’s been in my lap ever since for the last 5 years. She’s very reactive to people and sounds and things, but we just hug and love her. She’s become one of my best friends I’ve ever had in life, and I’m 55. She’s exceptionally loyal to me and Mrs. D-Rok, but will defend us in a heartbeat. We’ve been working with her for years, and she’s PERFECT for us, but for strangers greeting her, sometimes she just isn’t happy with some strangers. I always listen to how she responds to strangers, and if she doesn’t approve, neither do I – I move away and move along.

Dogs give me something in my heart, my soul, that I can’t find anywhere else. God spelled backwards is Dog, and I find that to be true, at least for my life.

  48. D-Rok Says:

PS: Sorry, guys for my diatribes on dogs. I tend to get carried away with something I’m passionate about.

  49. Chris Says:

Having Gruden as HC would be nice

  50. Winky Says:

Daisy for OC. Yeah, I said it

    Go Bucs!!!

  51. mark2001 Says:

Dogs are great. Miss the last Corgi I had…except when it is time to take him out for a walk at ten below. LOL.

  52. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    No to…Mayfield. Get real, people.

I would take Carr, because I think he’ll be a success with the right team.

But financially, I don’t see it.

  53. Curse of Gruden Says:

Easy, Red Pen. Put down that glass of orange juice and take a deep breath. Gru’s not coming back to Tampa until he wins his lawsuit against the NFL and then buys the team.

  54. AnonymousBuc76 Says:

    Carr is fool’s gold…

He just had the best WR in the game & The leagues leading rusher and still managed to suck enough to get benched….

He’s not clutch, he’s not an accurate passer, has no pocket presence, he withers under pressure…And what irks me the most is as athletic as he is he never uses his legs to keep the chains moving…

Take 2 Offensive lineman in this draft; preferably high…Let them compete for starting spots, and roll with Trask…Not the popular option but Imho why waste money on guys like Carr and Mayfield who really haven’t proven much of anything in this league.

  55. steele Says:

    Carr is a loser.

    No problem man.
Rod Munch is the same way when it comes to JayMiss’s pee-nis!

  57. Rod Munch Says:

DoooshLaRue – I have to copy and paste your name to remember you, but you remember me. It’s true love on Valentines day.

  58. Rod Munch Says:

Of course Jon Gruden would tell Carr to play here, after all he hates Derek Carr — and no, Carr beating out Mike Glennon for Gruden doesn’t mean Gruden was happy with Carr.

Jon Gruden will laugh his rear off if the Bucs give huge money to Carr, only to watch the team go 6-11 every year, which is the likely outcome.

  59. Goatfarmer Says:

Carr will say “ Fire Bloweszo, hire Gruden, and I’m yours.”

  60. darengibo Says:

Just glad to have 7 dogs to provide me cuddles and therapy during the upcoming season!!!

  61. Oneilbuc Says:

No forget Carr we ain’t winning nothing with Carr . And especially no to Gruen his racist behind we don’t need on this team. And I don’t think Bowles is a good Head Coach but he’s a good DC and that’s what he should have stayed in my opinion.

  62. unbelievable Says:

“John gruden is one of the greatest coaches to ever coach in the NFL”

Uhhhhh? His career winning percentage as head coach is .511, barely over 500. I would hardly call that “one of the greatest of all time”. I don’t personally have any ill feeling towards chucky, and I think he got screwed by the NFL and Dan Snyder, but let’s put things in perspective. He was a good coach, not great.
