Chris Godwin Details His Rehab Process

February 8th, 2023

Chris Godwin explains.

In Joe’s eyes, two things killed the Bucs’ chances of repeating as Super Bowl champs during the 2021 season.

The first was when headcase Antonio Brown did his topless jumping jacks routine and jogged out the tunnel of MetLife Stadium. The second was when Chris Godwin blew out his knee in December against the slimy Saints.

So the next offseason was rough for Godwin when he attempted to return from a torn ACL and MCL in less nine months.

He succeeded but Godwin admitted one of the tough elements of the rehab was that he really wasn’t part of the Bucs’ team any longer. He no longer participated in team activities. He was off to the side working out solo. That bothered him, he said on “Super Bowl Live” seen on NFL Network yesterday.

“It’s a very lonely process,” Godwin said. “You spend the majority of the rehab doing things by yourself. And you really try to find out who you are as a person.

“What got me through [it] was attacking everything the same way I have with everything else in my life. One day at a time and focusing on the task at hand as opposed to [looking at] the whole duration of the recovery.

“Once I got through that process and got cleared to play, for me, it was focused on, what is next? How do I get back to doing the things I know I can do?”

Godwin praised the Bucs coaching staff for giving him the chances and opportunities he needed early in the season to allow him to get back to his previous self. Towards the end of the year, it was clear Godwin was damn close to his old self.

Godwin also added he thought he had a good year in 2023 when you consider the knee recovery.

“It wasn’t easy to get back but I am really grateful I was able to,” Godwin said.

Joe has to believe receivers like Godwin and Mike Evans would make the Bucs’ quarterback job very, very attractive to a veteran signal-caller. No egos with these guys.

Any type of injury rehab is a long and lonely process. I been there with ya Chris, it’s grueling. But when you hit certain points in your rehab, the confidence comes back. Now in year 2 of recovery from surgery, you will see a big gain.

    Keep grinding !

So attractive that Carr is looking at NO? He probably likes what he sees in that young stud Olave who’s a future star. Evans is one year older, and by his own admission last year, had some troubling separating. Godwin will still be a shell of himself. Godwin and Evans are still good pieces.

Bucsfan13 … ‘Godwin will still be a shell of himself.’

I don’t understand your statement I guess. Chris had 104 catches in 15 games for over 1,000 yards receiving. And that was starting the year in a tenuous position & on a team that had trouble getting the ball down the field.

He really came on strong in those last 3 games I thought gaining 260 yards. He’ll be fine.

Godwin bounced back pretty well, right around the same time he got injured in 2021 and should be “comeback player of the year” because he was on coming down the stretch. Yes, he lost a fumble or two, but the burden of being pretty much the only WR Brady relied on week to week comes with those risks. Totally agree with Joe, any QB available should be intrigued with having a player like Godwin to lean on, let alone Evans & Gage. Also, 2022 needs to be the last year we dedicate a roster spot to Perriman and we need a WR like Zay Flowers to pair with Gage

We didn’t have Wirfs against the Rams either did we? or do I remember it wrong. If my memory is correct that makes a big difference in that game.

  6. Frank Pillow Says:

Even with one good knee 14 is the best football player on this team. It isn’t even close. Huge heart. Maximizes effort. Never loafs, pouts or makes excuses.

  7. BucsfanFred Says:

Down the stretch Godwin was out best receiver.

  8. SKBucsFan Says:

How about the third thing?….Todd Bowles as defensive coordinator blitzing when EVeryone knew you don’t blitz Stafford? Well everyone except our now head coach. We are poised for greatness people!

  9. Winky Says:

Godwin is a heck of a Buc.

    GO BUCS!!!

Yet another great find. Godwin is going to excel next season. He’s a stud among studs. Great attitude, great football personality, great man. Can’t wait to see him next season whoever throws the pigskin to him.
