“You Hate To See A Fall From Grace”

January 25th, 2023

Former Brady teammate weighs in.

It’s not outlandish to think Tom Brady is no longer a top-10 quarterback.

Joe could argue Brady is top-10, but it does require an argument when it didn’t in previous years.

A former Brady teammate in Tampa, retired Pro Bowl cornerback Richard Sherman, sees the decline in Brady. Sherman sounded a little melancholy about it on the podcast that bears his name.

He said Brady’s performance in the playoffs last week makes him think it might be time for Brady to hang it up or move on.

“A lot of passes where he wasn’t touched, nobody was front of him, he stepped in the rhythm and was just off,” Sherman said. “And you hate to see it. You know, you hate to see a fall from grace, especially the greatest of all-time but it happens to everybody. There’s not many 45-year-olds playing the game. …

“That might be it, at least for him in Tampa.”

Joe is always interested in Sherman’s take because he is thoughtful and has relationships in the Buccaneers locker room after playing for the team last season. Joe has no doubt Sherman texted a player or two after the Bucs were blown out by Dallas. So Joe wonders if any players share Sherman’s thoughts about Brady’s dropoff in play.

Sherman was asked about next stops for Brady and suggested the Raiders are the only good fit.

The other team he mentioned was the Jets, but he said Brady and Jets head coach Robert Saleh are a bad fit and the Jets likely want more of a long-term option at QB.

We had a wonderful ride in the carriage in 2020

Nobody in Buccaneers fandom, the ones that bled Buccaneers, want Bowles as head coach
    This very minute!!!
Flush the stink hanging over the room!
Geesh G’Boyz you are showing just how much you are out of touch!
They are like a five year old watching a balloon slip out of their hand and never to return!
    Move on Dot G’Boyz !
Lead or get trampled by the other 31 teams!

  3. Buc4evr Says:

Brady’s play this year was pretty bad at times because he can no longer extend plays. He needs an electric mobility scooter to move around and will no longer run for a first down. He would rather just throw the ball away.
Coupled with a bad O line , no running game, and an overall slow team, I don’t see him coming back. The coaching situation just aggravates the teams problems. I think he would retire before signing with the Bucs.

  4. Mike C Says:

    SB….. the G boys can’t just fire the head coach….. for reasons…….

  5. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Yes, he is not the QB he once was, but he is still better then just about any other option.
He probably won’t, but it would be great if he came back to Tampa next year.

Only ones that don’t see any dropoff are the brady fanboys. The man is 45. Its over hes not top 10 anymore and thats ok happens to everyone. He one us a super bowl and accomplished what he came here to do. It’s time for both the team and brady to move on.

  9. Dooley Says:

Tom Brady, is no longer a fulltime difference maker and for a lot of 2022 he looked like Pedro Cerrano from Major League 2 before Kamikazi told him he had “No Mawbles” and idk if Giselle or the BJJ coach will ever give them back.

  10. TAMPA BAY DEMON™ Says:

Am i the only one just TIRED of hearing about Tom Brady?
I appreciate HUGELY what he did here. It was INCREDIBLE. All 3 years.

There is a BIG part of me….
that just wants go back to being a NORMAL NFL team…
a team NOT with Tom Brady at QB….
a team…. that is just… a team, and the team we love.
    for better or worse.

  11. Jack Clark Says:

The Bucs were #2 in passing because Tom Brady is a Top 10 quarterback. The choice of objective metrics used to judge who are the best quarterbacks is subjective. We need Brady to win the Super Bowl next year.

  12. SB~LV Says:

    Has Bowles been fired yet?!?!!!!

  13. TAMPA BAY DEMON™ Says:

Jack Clark,,,, you need to focus on going back to hitting home runs for the Giants & Cardinals.

    😉

  14. Alanbucsfan Says:

Brady was terrific in 2nd half vs Cowboys.
Sherman was projected his own “fall from grace” in Tampa.

  15. Capece is Kaput Says:

I love what Brady did for this team but will not be crying if he does not come back. Overall, even if you take this past year into consideration, it was 3 years of success and winning that most younger or more talented QB’s never see, and certainly this franchise has never seen. 3 straight years of playoffs, 2 division titles, 1 Super Bowl. He needs to retire or move on. If you think this year Brady did not look good, just wait till next year. This is just reality at this point. Overall the past 3 years were still technically a success. We have not really seen that fall from grace yet. I don’t want to see it and I certainly don’t want to see it happen here. Does anyone really want to suffer through a 5-12 season with Brady as the QB and Bowles as the coach because that is the direction they are going in. Everybody needs to amicably part ways while the vibes are still relatively good, that includes saying bye to Bowles. Time to start over. Hold on to your key guys which in my opinion are: Godwin, Evens, Wirfs, Jensen, Vea, David, Winfield, Dean and the Punter, and rebuild, don’t reload. Reload for Bowles means a double digit loss season. No doubt about it.

  17. David Says:

So far I have seen reports they are interviewing a Texans coach & a Denver coach for OC.
You’d think they would go after teams with offenses that actually did something

  18. KC Buc Says:

If internal scouting and coaching feel like Brady’s play significantly declined, it may be time to move on like Sherman says. If Brady comes back with preferential treatment combined with mediocre performance, I can see the locker room eroding quickly and I don’t live in a world where Bowles has the chutzpah to ever bench Brady. Best to let another team do that sin.

But if internal scouting and coaching think he’s still a baller, bring him back. I think he’s going to find that TB is his best option over the alternatives.

  19. Kentucky Buc Says:

I will sit here and laugh my azz off again at the idiots who think Brady’s washed when he lights the league up next year. People never learn. It does keep me entertained though.

  20. SB~LV Says:

    Is that Jim Carey ?
    😏🙈😂

  21. KC Buc Says:

Also that call from Collinsworth (who I wish would retire) comparing Brady missing a wide open receiver to Lebron missing a layup sits there in the back of my mind….those bad misses didn’t happen the first 2 years. If we are being honest, Tom made a handful of Zach Wilson bad throws this year, like that across the field Favre throw in the cowboys game…what was that garbage Tom?

  22. Dooley Says:

    @Kentucky Buc

I laughed when you called BAs’ playbook a run n shoot offense in another comment thread lol

  23. Kentucky Buc Says:

    Suck duck Dooley

  24. Dooley Says:

    @Kentucky Buc

It’s public knowledge Arians idolized Don Coryell, and built his philosophy/playbook around Coryell’s vertical passing philosophy, as opposed to a run & shoot offense being a personnel based compliment to the Air Coryell style of offense using mostly 4 WRs and a TE/RB. Similar like an apple is to a pear, but not the same lol

  25. sasquatch Says:

I wonder what Rita Moreno thinks about this.

  26. SufferingSince76 Says:

I’m not willing to go down that road just yet. I want to see Brady behind a solid o-line before I go there. I think he still has the juice. Last season was an aberration.

  27. SufferingSince76 Says:

And I mean the team as a whole, not just Brady.

  28. Davenport Says:

Time to move on from Tom — they can’t win with him and the distraction he creates will not help the team move forward.

Awesome QB. Willed the team to a SB. Can’t thank him enough.

  29. Buccos Says:

There were definitely times this year when Brady seemed washed. But then you had those amazing 4th quarter comebacks. And then you had the 2nd Carolina game where he was dropping dimes from 60 yards away. I don’t know how you can say hat he can’t play anymore after seeing those things. There was a decline but not having Gronk, AB, Marpet and Jensen could have more to do with it. I’m sure that if Brady doesn’t believe that he can still compete at a high level, he will hang it up. It’s not as though he needs the money or the records

  30. Randy Bowers Says:

Need to be building a team around a younger QB to be able to compete with other top tier teams.Time to move on from all the Brady worshipers and all the drama surrounding him. There are 51 other men that make up this team.

  31. Kentucky Buc Says:

I said variation moron. Where do you think all those option routes come from. BA like a lot of coaches uses parts of several offenses. Hell Payton uses everything in the book . BA has used run and shoot concepts going back many years and yeah I’m sure he runs some Coreyell stuff too. He also ran some Erhardt Perkins in 2020-21.

  32. Yucs2Bucs Says:

It’s called reality and needs to happen asap !! No more with TB12 and bringing him back for another year and fattening the G boys and lady’s pockets !! The Bolts have won multiple Stan’s and have been relevant and competitive for 10 years in a row and the quicker the rebuild starts the quicker they will be relevant again

  33. SB~LV Says:

Watch the QB’s play this weekend and see what it anything reminds you of Tom Brady

  34. Michael Denney Says:

If you’re 30 it’s just a slump. If you’re 45 you’ve lost it. Some people don’t understand the things they utter with such certainty.

  35. Dooley Says:

Kentrigged Buc, it was still wrong and funny at the same time lol

  36. Duane Says:

I dont think Brady is washed, but he is VERY close. He did have 4th quarter comebacks this year, but reaching 20 pts at the end of a game to win is the telling factor. He wasnt all in this season either. He played very solid on the field between the 20s, but couldnt convert the TDs. He was Captain Check Down this season to the extreme. He isnt shot like Manning or Brees, and I think he has value, but that is only because I have seen him play recently. Please show me where there are other fan bases screaming for his services. He is a sideshow that only the media finds relevant, and I think that is mainly so they can quickly pivot and do him dirty when he fails to get another gig, or does have to retire. The story of a long in the tooth veteran that may have stuck around for too long has already written itself. Icarus flew to close to the sun for too long.

  37. Kentucky Buc Says:

What’s funny is you think you know it all. Your just a young dumb azz . It’s obvious. You may grow out of it some day like the rest of us had to.

  38. Your Mom Says:

It may be because Brady might be nursing an injury that we don’t know about.

  39. J Says:

Sherman didn’t watch the game I watched then. Brady had hardly anytime to throw the ball. Just because Sherman is washed up, doesn’t mean Btady is.

  40. Kenny Says:

JUST WAIT!!!!! everyone hating on TB12, is going to be sorry, if he doesn’t come back and retires or heads to another team, the BUCS are going to be the laughing stock of the NFL for many years to come, then all you sorry ass SO CALLED fans, are going to like well we should have kept that TB12 guy for 2 more years, but no all we have is a QB that throws 30 TD’S and 40 Interceptions…LOL

  41. AbucAway Says:

If anyone knows what washed up looks like, it’s someone that’s washed up.

I’m a Brady fan and the last thing I want to see is him actually fall off the cliff. I’ve enjoyed watching him being a master of his craft every year he has played, expect this year. I cringed way to much to really enjoy the show. It’s not watchable for me only because I hate to see it.

  42. rsjcheapseats Says:

In 2019 Brady was 17th in QBR. He was 9th in 2020 and 2nd in 2021.

This season Brady looked more like he did in 2019, and he was 19th in QBR.

The 2019 Pats were thin offensively, and the ’22 Bucs had incredible problems on the OL.

In between the Bucs gave Brady an almost perfect situation, and he performed at a high level.

Brady is very dependent on the team around him, more than most QB’s.

  43. Infomeplease Says:

Fire Bowles first!!! TB12 still can play!!! Maybe not top 5 qb but definitely top 10!!! Top 10 is good enough for a superbowl run!! The offense was screwed up by Bowles and the Bowles philosophy of how football should be played!!!! The end result is another losing season for a team coached by Todd Bowles!!! He imposed his will over BL and turned BL into a total loser too!! Very poor coaching!! Bowles did not hold his coaching staff accountable for results!!! Poor coaching makes for a losing season even with talented players!! Bowles is getting very good at bad head coaching!! He should stick with DC. That he is good at!! Even though he did a horrible job of it for that Dallas game!!!

  44. Infomeplease Says:

Any body who saw TB12 mic ed up for the Dallas game saw a fired up TB12 with teammates that did not want to play for their coaches or their teammates!!!!! This is the result of bad coaching!!! Bowles and his staff should have had this team eager to be on the field, prime time, nationwide!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ready to play!! Dominating!! But no!!!!!!!!!
Practices should have been intense all week!! Bowles should have been pumping them up all week!! Getting them focused and eager for game day. Ready for that Monday Night Playoff Game!!! BUT NO!!!!!! Surprise Surprise Bucs Lose!!!! FIRE BOWLES!!!!

  45. stpetebucfan Says:

AGAIN!!! Blame our OL for the horrid running but Brady had decent protection.

25QB’s were sacked more frequently than he was. Or put another way Brady was sacked among the top ten of least sacked QBs this year.

You could perhaps make a case he threw the ball away and that kept the numbers down, but as Sherman points out and as we all SAW he made far too many horrible passes this year even when he had the time and a clear lane.

There were several times this season when we desperately needed just ONE yard or less for a first down. Historically Brady was one of the best at that but he only dared attempt it once or twice this year opting instead to let Lennie or White run into a defense that had time to react.

Do we suspect in light of those choices there may have been other play calls designed as much to protect a 45 year old’s health as succeeding?

You can tell you have not watched Brady much or do not understand what you’re seeing. Brady was getting the ball out in 2 seconds and still getting hit or severely pressured. He got the ball out faster than any quarterback. Brady has not often taken sacks at any point in his career because he is a child of Belichek. Brady will throw the ball at the feet or over the head of receivers to avoid sacks, as was drilled into him by Belichek. Negative plays, sacks and turnovers, get you behind the chains, and create the potential for a more predictable offense that leads to more negative plays or turnovers. Belichek is a military historian and drills into his players that its better to live to fight another day instead of sacrificing life needlessly. So in football terms its better to take the incompletion than a sack. If Brady had held the ball longer on many plays the offense would have looked a whole lot worse. Our blocking, both passing and run, were terrible. Play calling was highly suspect with no adjustments. Ask yourself this, if Brady was so washed, why did he move the ball almost at will when in the two and four minute offense? Its because he was calling the plays at the line and could adjust to his feel for the defense. Our wide receivers are bigger and take time to get open also. Gone was AB and Gronk, who could get open quickly. Gage is that person Brady sorely missed but he was injured all year. Some food for thought.
