Shaq Barrett Hopes To Return For Regular Season

January 17th, 2023

Bucs OLB Shaq Barrett.

Bucs sacks king Shaq Barrett suffered an ugly season-ending injury against Baltimore for a guy turning 30. He has a target date to return.

Shaq blew out his Achilles. Those are nasty for younger players. Former Bucs tight end O.J. Howard never fully recovered.

Remember Earnest Graham? He was 30 when he blew out his Achilles. It killed his career.

Shaq was one of the very few Bucs hanging out in the locker room this morning, just hours after an embarrassing loss to the Cowboys in the wild card round on “Monday Night Football.”

Joe asked Shaq to share his target date. Shaq said getting back on the field by the start of the 2023 regular season is a reasonable goal. For now.

Shaq admitted his rehab is a long road so that date could change. He also said he plans to continue his rehab in Tampa. In the past, Shaq often returned to his home in Colorado.

I did not realize he was not playing…. in or out same thing….

  2. freddy Says:

Shaq is our best pass rusher so we need him back JTS has no impact and VV has an impact every other game we missed SUH and PP there was no leadership on the Dline.

another thing cowboys defense is aggressive and susceptible to double moves especially Travon diggs , ( out and ups, sluggo’s, stutter and go, hitch and go, whatever) so why weren’t any called against this defense? oh yea BL doesn’t know how to scheme a game plan

Depressing day just thinking of Bowls Leftwich returning. so bad it feels like have been to a funeral.

  4. gbobucsfan Says:

    why is Byron still employed?

  5. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Love Shaq…..but it’s hard for me to believe he will be nothing but a shadow of his former self with that injury…….I really hope I’m wrong……he’s eating up a bunch of cap and we need production from him.

  6. Goatfarmer Says:

    Yawn. Cap casualty.

  7. 97 bucBaby Says:

He can go with the rest of everyone else this team hopefully will be letting go. Achilles injury and he 30 let him go trade or release him. His time is over as a buccaneers

  8. Jack Sparrow Says:

Thank you Tom Brady for at least sending the Bucs to the playoffs considering the fact that you have 2 incompetent and inept coaches running this team. Whereever you go, wish you all the best hope you have another SB. But if you ever lobby for a new coach for the bucs and remains here, that woild be awesome.

  9. CoryC Says:

    @Jack Sparrow

He had his worst season as a pro and only limped into the playoffs by being the best team in a historically bad division. No 8/9 team should ever compete in the postseason.

  10. Locked In Says:

Interesting. I thought I heard he was not in Tampa since his injury? I must be misremembering that.

  11. TOM EDRINGTON Says:

    WHO?

  12. big_buc$ Says:

I stated this once and I will say it again. Its time for a youth movement. Get young across the board. The bucs were the oldest team in the league the last 2 years. Can keep signing all these old vets. Have to draft and go young. Can’t do nothing but look at the GM who has missed on a entire draft class. So as for Shaq 2019 was a outlier imo. He doesn’t set the edge well vs the run and he disappears vs elite tackles. So he may be back 1 more season but after that he may be released since his guaranteed money will be paid.

  13. David Says:

Jack Sparrow claims he can’t tell if Shaq is in the lineup or not… Wow, that is some serious football ignorance. Shaq gets pressures, hits, sacks, tackles for loss, and causes general disruption. It’s the main reason the defense struggles at times, lack of an edge rush.

  14. LVMYBUCS Says:

If u give Bowles another year and he sucks then u have a new coach come in and he will be in the same spot Bowles was in when Arians left. Why not fire them all and start fresh.

  15. unbelievable Says:

Bucs had zero pass rush last night after the first 2 series.

    ZERO.

I saw a few safety blitzes, but they never got there. If you’re going to blitz a safety, why not have him on the LOS instead of standing 5 yards back. The disguise doesn’t work, and the extra steps are the difference between hitting the quarterback and watching him throw a completion before you get there.

Just another example of bad coaching / preparation.

  16. unbelievable Says:

Also- is Antoine Winfield’s career over already?

He has NOT been the same player since his injuries this season. A shell of his former self. Such a shame for some one who had so much talent.

  17. ElioT Says:

I don’t see Shaq coming back to anywhere near 100% of his former ability with this injury, age and it’s not like he’s some athletic freak of nature either.

His cap number will be ~$21.6M (~$23M dead cap).

Tough situation that the Bucs can’t get out of.

We’re in for some ugly years boys, but hopefully not as painful as the 2022 debacle. – Every game was like punishment.

    Horrible Season.

    Fire Byron & Bowels!!!!!

  18. Goatfarmer Says:

    Get rid of Diva White.

  19. ElioT Says:

@Goatfarmer – 100% agreed, it’d be huge if they could find a trade partner to get him out of here.

  20. Bosch Says:

A Steelers site is speculating Lertwich’s presumed firing will make him available to be Steelers OC. I have to believe the Steelers Org is smarter than that.

  21. ViSyl Says:

I’m probably much more angry by the fact that the coaching staff is not fired yet, than by our loss.

  22. Jack Sparrow Says:

he played first half of the season and what do we get from the defense at that time, same results as if when he was out….. lol !!!

  23. SB~LV Says:

Off course he does because it means a ton of money to him.
However he will never be the player that he was.
    Move on Bucs

  24. Will Says:

It’s crazy that I believe there’s talent on this team just that coaching is that horrible. Devin hasn’t gotten any better in coverage (put him on the edge and use him like Parsons to just get after the QB) Antoine Winfield has regressed. Carlton Davis isa press corner that always lines up 10yds off his man and still gets beat. Wait maybe the team isn’t talented. Lol

  25. Allbuccedup Says:

Shaq is overpaid damaged goods release him june 1st save 15 plus mil. Trade Diva White save 11 mil, trade or release Donovan Smith save 10 mil.

  26. Dooley Says:

Keep Shaq, but restructure his deal to free up more cap for 2023

  27. R.O. Says:

Shaq has always had a sloppy, lazy look to his Physique. Hopefully he will take this as an opportunity to add some Muscle and get leaner.

  28. Pewter Power Says:

We’ll need to draft another outside linebacker, after jts progressing does anyone see Jason Licht hitting a home run at edge rusher? I think Logan hall should be training at Gholston position not behind hicks and vea

  29. Bucsfanman Says:

Shaq was/is our best pass-rusher, and while he may not have the sack stats, he constantly pressured opposing QBs. So, don’t be so fast to discount him.

In what capacity will he return? That’s the question. Can he overcome the injury?

  30. YucsBall Says:

Thanks for everything Shaq, that being said, cut or trade him.

  31. mark2001 Says:

Hope to return by regular season? You mean 9 months from now…you hope? Wow. Sounds like we better go to plan c.

  32. Davenport Says:

    Over 30 on a go-nowhere team in 2023.
Trade or cut – no emotion – we have a bad cap situation. Keeping a hobbled edge rusher, with a high price tag, makes zero sense

  33. Brandon Says:

I think we save something like $14m if we cut him. That being said, I had my Achilles sliced in December 2019 and my goal to be cleared to return to sports was six months. I made it in exactly five months. Shaq SHOULD be able to do the same considering he has access the best therapists and trainers in the world… as well as stem cell and all the other new healing techniques. All I had was an obsession to get cleared as soon as possible and an unparalleled work ethic. No reason he shouldn’t be 100% by camp.

  34. Luka Says:

Shaq barret and ryan Jenson both are gone. 23 mil and 19 mil (5.6 cap hit) would save 38 mil

  35. Goatfarmer Says:

Fire Toad’s Bowels, Byemron’s Leftwurst, Keith’s Weakarm, and anyone else that followed orders when the maroon running the team can’t run a practice without players all dumbfounded as to their assignments .

Fire them so hard it shows up as an earthquake in Tasmania.
