“He’s Playing Behind Tom Brady. What Are We Talking About?”

January 5th, 2023

“Your fans got to Coach, Kyle.”

The Buccaneers’ playcaller seems like he’s been reading wacky fan comments on this here website. Or maybe he’s been hearing too many drunks barking behind the Bucs’ bench.

Byron Leftwich stood before the media today and was asked about third-string quarterback Kyle Trask.

Head coach Todd Bowles big-time raved about Trask’s work ethic yesterday, so it was natural to follow up with Bowles today, considering Trask could get his first regular-season snaps in Sunday’s meaningless game at Atlanta.

Leftwich was a little stunned by all the Trask chatter — now and whatever he’s hearing from some fans and/or media.

“I remember early in the year, God, people mad at Kyle Trask for not playing in front of Tom Brady,” Leftwich said. “That blew my mind that that’s even a conversation. Tom’s here and people mad at Kyle for not playing. You only play one at a time. It’s not like other positions.”

Leftwich also raved about Trask’s work ethic and consistent approach. But Leftwich drew a line when asked if he is curious what Trask would show on the field.

“As of right now in 2023, I’ve got my mind on other things (laughs),” Leftwich said. “That’s not how you think as a coach. I mean, he’s playing behind Tom, what are we talking about? Let’s not even have that conversation, right? The kid’s working his tail off but he’s playing behind the greatest ever.”

Joe will nitpick Leftwich a bit to note that Trask is really playing behind Blaine Gabbert, not Brady.

Regardless, Joe is ecstatic to hear all the Trask love at One Buc Palace. And it sure would be fun if he got a couple of series on Sunday and made the most of them.

  1. Kentucky Buc Says:

First sensible thing Byron said all year.

  2. NEfan Says:

Joe, could you imagine the cat calls if Trask came in and went for a 5 min drive and threw a TD to Miller or Thompkins? The haters would have Trask starting the playoff game and Purdying the Bucs to a SB W. Stop the presses!

  3. A Says:

If they really believed in Trask he’d be the #2…

  4. Don Says:

I just picked him up in my fantasy football team.
We do auction and it’s a keeper league.
Who knows he might be the starter next year or do you want to be Colts part 2 and resign 35 year old QBs???

  5. Darin Says:

Even if I believed lefty and bowles and take the opposite and run with it. One half of good offense and we’re crowning them. These guys are in way over their heads. Hopefully just two more weeks of this S show

  6. SB~LV Says:

    Nothing burger
BL is in a position WAY WAY above his ability to execute. I am certain he can answer all the questions about OC tactics and strategies in a interview room or even while working side by side with BA. However when those answers are needed under the pressure of a game he crumbles.
If BA was no risk it no biscuit
    then
BL is no biscuit to risk it
Look how long it took BA to work his way up in the NFL

  7. Tim Says:

God, is it really that hard to speak correctly? You’re a coach, a leader. An example for others to follow, not some kid that barely made it out of middle school.

  8. James Says:

Bucs fans, somehow, will be disappointed when Leftwhich get’s his 2nd ring

  9. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

A lot of this is just talk designed to take our, and our opponent’s, attention away tactical and strategic questions. At least that is how I read all of this.

  10. Depressed 2022 Says:

Hey SB, … Leftwich is more like No basket and No Brain’s.

TEAM no risk it no biscuit!

  12. Winny Testaverde Says:

How did Lefty not nail the Jags interview?! He would have been worse than Urban Meyer.

And yes…so many of us are mad Trask didn’t beat out Brady…because that was a distinct possibility. Sounds like Bowles & Byron are getting a head start on next season by over promoting Trask’s work ethic and determination.

  13. Statguy Says:

Um because it’s a meaningless game, because we have been beat up all year and can rest, it doesn’t improve our seeding, because you spent a second rounder. Actually we are better off not exposing Trask to Lefty’s playcalling

  14. Craig Says:

Face it, folks, Trask will be in the running for the starting job next season. Brady showed too much frustration to be back again.

I don’t understand why a horrid QB (Gabbert) got picked at #2 this season, my understanding is because he has game experience. He also has a shoulder that if you look at it wrong will be in a sling.

Everybody needs to know what Trask can do. We have seen what Jordon Love looks like and why he is sitting. We need to know that Trask is viable before the draft, and maybe a mulligan.

  15. Razor Ramone Says:

Face it, you do not know that.

  16. Goatfarmer Says:

Seriously, the next time anyone from Joe or any of the other Buc-interested journalistic centers asks this bazoo a question, the question should be,

“Byron, what are your post-NFL plans after this season ends?”

  17. Alanbucsfan Says:

Bowles and Leftwich should get on the podium and do the Gator Chomp in unison.
Would that make you Trask fans happy?

  18. Bojim Says:

    Yes.

  19. Buccos Says:

Very good chance that Trask is our QB next year. I would make every attempt to resign Brady because he is still damn good if you can keep him upright but I am ok with Trask. He should have been able to learn a lot from Brady these last 2 years and he was a star in college who lit up the SEC including Alabama. Yes I am a Gator and I loved the pick. They said he would have been the 1st QB taken last year. He has been groomed to lead this team into the new era. If Brady wants to move on, let him. If he wants to play for us again, even better

  20. Goatfarmer Says:

You guys that want Trask — you think we punt a lot and don’t score many points now?!

    ROTFLMAO

  21. BA’s Red Pen Says:

A lot of dudes who comment here will be touching themselves if Trask gets in the game.

  22. mg Says:

    Indeed, Goatfarmer.

  23. Goatfarmer Says:

    And….again let’s repeat — I am a Gator, Even AR15, who fooled me for a minute, will be a bust. Every.Gator.QB.Sucks.In.The.NFL.

    I don’t know why, it’s like gravity. It’s a law of physics.

  24. SKBucsFan Says:

James…we won’t be disappointed if Leftwhich gets his 2nd ring (ad lo g as he is a Buc!) But let’s be honest it will be in spite of his “coaching” and all due to TB12 calling the plays/ running a hurry up offense.

  25. garroman Says:

Be interesting to me to know Who in the “media” asked the question about Trask, and what exactly the question was Joe’s.

Come on guys give us the whole story not just the bits that get you hits!

    Put down the Bong dude.

  27. Capt.Tim Says:

Yeah- most teams play their future franchise QB at 3rd string.
    Right, Ryan Griffin?
Our future QB is not on the roster- or their first name is Blaine.
IF Brady leaves, and after this screwed up year whi could blame,
Im ok with With Gabbert. He was in a no win situation.
    I think he has skills.
    Trask? I think he’d be Gabbert’s backup.
Time will tell. Id rather hang on to the Goat!
