Gameday Tampa Bay

January 16th, 2023

Wild Card Round Edition

Cowboys (12-5) at Bucs (8-9)

Kickoff: 8:15 p.m.

TV: ABC (WFTS-TV Channel 28, locally).

Streaming: ESPN+ and Buccaneers.com (Geographic restrictions apply).

Radio: Buccaneers Radio Network WXTB-FM 97.9 in the Tampa-St. Petersburg region (Transmisiones de radio en español en WTMP-FM 96.1 y WMGG-AM 1470 en Tampa). Additional stations throughout Florida on the Buccaneers Radio Network can be found here. The game also will be broadcast on SiriusXM Channel 225 (Buccaneers Radio Network broadcast), SiriusXM NFL Radio Channel 88 (Westwood One national broadcast).

Weather: Per AccuWeather.com, clear and chilly. Tailgaters will enjoy temperatures in the mid- to lower-60s which will drop pretty quickly when the sun sets. By kickoff look for the temperature to be 56 with virtually no wind. The temperature will only drop slightly as the game is played. By the end of the game, look for it to be 51. In other words, nice football weather.

Odds: Per BetMGM, as of midnight, Dallas -2.5; over/under 45.5.

Referees: Craig Wrolstad is tonight’s referee. Per Sharp Football Analysis, better not bet on the Bucs. That’s not to say the Bucs will lose because home teams are just a hair under .500 in games where Wrolstad’s outfit works. But home teams are turrible against the spread in games where Wrolstad’s gang is assigned. Home underdogs are 13-29 against the spread with Wrolstad’s crew works. Wrolstad’s gang doesn’t like to throw flags which is a good thing.

Injuries: Cowboys — Out: CB Trayvon Mullen (illness). Bucs — Doubtful: LG Nick Leverett (knee/shoulder), TE Kyle Rudolph (knee). Questionable: CB Carlton Davis (shoulder), S Mike Edwards (hip), C Robert Hainsey (hamstring), OL John Molchon (ankle), OLB Carl Nassib (pectoral), S Keanu Neal (hip), S Logan Ryan (knee), LT Donovan Smith (foot), DT Vita Vea (calf).

Outlook: The best news the Bucs have had since Tom Brady announced he would return for the 2022 season came this morning when the Bucs announced Pro Bowl center Ryan Jensen would be activated for tonight. Jensen blew out his knee in the team’s second practice of training camp. This could be a major psychological boost for Brady only because at times this year, Brady has appeared really jumpy in the pocket, which has resulted in bad passes if not turnovers. The loss to Cincinnati springs to mind. If Brady can throw deep more often because Jensen helps give Brady more time to throw, perhaps the Bucs will return to more of their no-risk-it; no-biscuit ways when they had an elite offense. This season, the Bucs have had one of the worst offenses in the NFL, which is an utter disgrace and should have led to the firing of failing Bucs offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich after the loss at Carolina. (Yes, the worst team in the NFL, Da Bears!, score more than the Bucs with Tom Brady. Shameful!). Of course, the Bucs throwing deep and using more play-action would mean Leftwich might suddenly have an epiphany. Joe isn’t banking on that. Having Jensen back may also help spring Playoff Lenny, who dominates postseason games. But again, that would mean Leftwich knows how to scheme a run game. The Bucs are the worst in the NFL at running the ball. So Joe believes the fate of the Bucs rests in the hope that Leftwich sees the light. As a result, Joe fears the Bucs are in trouble.

Fun fact: With a win tonight, Tom Brady will have more playoff wins than the Cowboys have in their storied history. Both Brady and the Cowboys currently have 35 playoff wins.

I’m sorry to say if the W is based off cheerleaders, Bucs don’t stand a chance.

  2. Yacksareback Says:

First play up the gut? Byron, please, please exercise common sense and prove me wrong.

  3. unbelievable Says:

On defense: stay in your effin gaps and careful of Dak scrambing.

On offense: Play action! Pre snap motion! Mix in tempo / no huddle through out! And of course, FEED MIKE EVANS!

  4. D-Rok Says:

    GO BUCS!!!

  5. Jmarkbuc Says:

Don’t put Winfield in the slot.

  7. Redeemer Says:

The Redeemer hasn’t been this excited for a game in a while. Day drinking has begun. Brother D-Rok remember, you still listed as emergency contact in case of catatonia. Mrs. Redeemer is out of town. Go Bucs!!!!!!!!

  8. NEfan Says:

Redeemer if that’s the case stop staring at the caption picture or your new name will be sticky fingers.

  9. Derek Says:

The podcasts haven’t been showing up on Apple podcasts

  10. Ed Says:

I just wanna see effort and execution like the Giants did vs Vikings.

That Giant coach has done miracles in New York. Other than Barkley there are hardly any playmakers like Bucs have but they played their asses off.

We need all out effort instead of the wussy punting and field goal attempts on 4th and 1’s.

All weekend teams were going for it on 4th and 1 and most of them kept their drives alive. Our coaches need to watch some games like the fans do and see that it is in their favor to gamble on 4th and short.

  11. Tye Says:

I hate that its the last game of the weekend…
All the other games were at least good games that proved they all were worthy of being in the playoffs…
The Bucs haven’t had a scoring offense in hardly any of their games…
Nervous that Bowles incompetence is going to show up and cost the Bucs this game!

  12. LVMYBUCS Says:

COME ON BUCS IF U BEAT ANY TEAM IN THE PLAYOFF PLEASE BEAT THESE AS HATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GO BUC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  13. NEfan Says:

What really blows is if they win they play the 9ers who played Saturday, short week.

  14. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

I think we beat the Cowboys tonight, and the look on Jerry Jones face will be priceless! Brady has never lost to Dallas, in his entire career, and I can’t see us losing tonight.
Yes, San Francisco might beat us next week, but IMHO they are a MUCH better team than Dallas.
WE are well stocked up on Bromosa, good Pizza, and plenty Chicken Wings.
    Go Bucs!

  15. Jeff Says:

Boys 31 Yucs 19. Brady is sacked 7 times.

  16. #8's Ghost Says:

Chris…Jerry’s face is frozen. His look is the same no matter.

  17. NEfan Says:

Jeff the optimist. Gotta love aholes like him.

  18. HC Grover Says:

In a few hours we will see the results of ‘The Bowzo’ season. Only Dallas can save us. If they can outblunder Bowzo it will be a miracle on The Bay at Ray Jay.

  19. Redeemer Says:

NE, blahhahhhahh. If they lose, my new name will be The Drooler.

  20. Buc1987 Says:

  21. Jeff’s real dad Says:

Now now son give mom her tablet back you’ve been wrong to many times it’s just embarrassing now son

  22. TheBucsAnthem Says:

All I want is for the Bucs to beat the Cowgurls…..cause we know the Bucs will not advance any further in the playoffs

  23. Infomeplease Says:

You have root for the underdogs!!! Of course last night I thought the Ravens were in control until they snatched a loss from a win on the one yard line late in the game(I hope Byron removed that play from his short yardage list). On any given day!!! On any given day!!!

  24. mark2001 Says:

NE… you mean if the Bucs lose tonight, they will have the same chance to advance in the playoffs that NE has?

  25. mark2001 Says:

And really… when are NFL cheerleaders any more than eye candy? Not saying there might not be a future scientist, engineer or doctor in the mix. But I don’t think that is what they are promoting.

  26. NEfan Says:

Well Mr. Anthem, let me tell you a little story about a team in 2017 there name was the NE Patriots. They were underdogs to the Chargers, Boza and Ingram were going to beat Brady into submission. Results blow out NE. Moving on to the AFC Championship against KC and their superstar new Goat on the block Patrick Mahomes. Back and forth they battled in the house of Mahomes until they reached overtime. This is when the real GOAT took over went 7 for 7 and Burnheart scampered in for 3 yds which turned out to be the winning td, securing the trip to the SB where they were to take on the highest scoring offense and most tenacious D that season. The D did play tenacious but to no avail and the Pat’s D holding the highest score O to only 3 points was enough to win SB#6. Pat’s 13 Rams 3

The moral of the story is, ya just.never know!

  27. mark2001 Says:

Anthem. The 49er’s are a fine team. But not unbeatable. As they say, if you want to be the best you have to beat the best… in fact, you have to beat everyone put before you. Take one game at a time. Enjoy. And don’t worry about the next game.

  28. NEfan Says:

Mark, cheerleaders are the ultimate support vehicle. Put aside their voluptuous pom poms, silky muscular thighs, buttox you can bounce quarters off and flowing hair. Shoot, I better stop Redeemers going to hurt himself. They are the backbone of any team. Almost forgot in the Bucs case buldging crotch and hairy backs.

  29. fwfan Says:

For those that say anybody is beatable in the NFC, which I agree. Would you include the 8-9 Bucs in that conversation?

  30. MadMax Says:

I had to take a half day vacation for tomorrow so I wouldnt miss any of this and go to work off 2 hrs of sleep lol….245am rolls around quick. Now i can sleep till 745am 😀

  31. mark2001 Says:

NE Fan… Backbone? More like they cause a front “bone”.

  32. D-Rok Says:

Redeemer, I got your back bro. But, stupid you! Havin your gal outta town on this pivotal night? I know you gonna be ragin’ when it go bad, and hoopin’ n hollerin’ when it go right, just like me, right? You and me NEED the misses to keep us in line, ammiright?

Pace yourself, my brother, please. Advice I SHOULD take – I’m already half in the bag, as Mrs. D-Rok likes to say, a full hour or so before the game. She’s so pissed at me a full hour before the game. I’m a sad, sad fan. But, I just reached out and got permission from the owner to show up at noon tomorrow as I told him, “IT’S THE PLAYOFFS, BABYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!” Lol I’m so getting fired.

    LOLz.

  33. Redeemer Says:

D-Rok, at this point, I may need help getting to my chair for the game. Don’t worry though. Mrs. Redeemer is in close contact. Her baby sister just went into labor. I’ll be celebrating a new member of the fam and a bucs win!!! Blessed day. Love you my brother. LFG!!!!!!!!!

  34. D-Rok Says:

Much love to you too, Redeemer. “The greatest commandment is to love.” And I believe that. Except when discussing our illustrious OC, LOL.

I’m gonna enjoy this game, cuz my team is in the playoffs, whether we win, lose, or draw. Hoping they are competitive!

    GO BUCS!!!

  35. Phx Bucs Fan Says:

From chilly Maryland – LFG! I need a few more weeks of football!
