Can Bucs Get Mike McCarthy Run?

January 16th, 2023

Would Jerry Jones pull the trigger?

There were very, very few things good or cool about the Bucs prior to the team’s 1979 season when they won the franchise’s first division crown and were 10 points away from a Super Bowl.

Two cool things came in back-to-back games to end 1977, the Bucs’ second season. The Bucs had gone 0-26 since they began playing but finished the 1977 season (14 games) with consecutive wins, the first two in franchise history.

And in both the Bucs got the opposing coaches run, Hank Stram and Don Coryell.

Could this history repeat itself tonight?

There is a whole lot of chatter out of Dallas that if the Bucs beat the Cowboys tonight Dallas coach Mike McCarthy is a goner. Last week Dallas owner Jerry Jones gave McCarthy a vote of confidence but that didn’t seem to faze Hall of Fame Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman.

Appearing on the “SI Media Podcast” hosted by Jimmy Traina, Traina asked Aikman, who will call tonight’s game with Joe Buck, about the reaction in Dallas if the Bucs win. Aikman just busted out laughing.

Later, Traina asked Aikman about Jones’ vote of confidence for McCarthy. Aikman said, “I’ve heard Jerry Jones say a lot of things over the years. And he’s changed his mind, sometimes within just a couple of minutes.”

The theory in North Texas is that Jones has long coveted former slimy Saints head coach Sean Payton, who was once a Cowboys offensive coordinator under Bill Parcells. Payton is currently toying with teams with head coach openings.

This may sound terrible, but how awesome would that be if the Bucs pull off the upset tonight, Jones will be so enraged he would run McCarthy out of Dallas and hire Payton? At least, that would keep Payton out of the NFC South.

And it almost seems like McCarthy is toying with fate. Asked last week how beneficial getting an extra day of rest prepping for the Bucs is, McCarthy said the Cowboys didn’t need the extra rest.

Nothing I watched in QB play Saturday and Sunday reminded me of Tom Brady
Bless his heart but he is athletically Over the Hill !

  2. NEfan Says:

SB~LV, what did you see from these QB’s except Jones that Brady can’t do? Throw for 200 yds and a few TD’s and 2 ints? Allen and Burrow sucked. He reads the field better than all of them. The suck part is they ALL can run the ball.

Make NO mistake the Killer B’s and the queen is BA, destroyed the Bucs. BA the Buc killer.

  3. Bobby Says:

I’m done fantasizing that the 2022 -2023 are a good team and could be a good team. There not!! Bucs will get handled by the Cowgirls tonight unfortunately. Brady will leave for Miami. And next season is going to be. Much different team. Maybe we will have Baker Mayfield or Derek Carr at Qb. Leftwich and maybe Bowles will be gone, as they should be. And this season will probably go down as one of the worst blunders in Bucs history. Bad and arrogant coaching is what destroyed what should have been a Super Bowl winning final Bucs and Brady season. I’ll be on the message board tonight after the horrible loss. Go Bucs!!!

  4. SB~LV Says:

    Brady can’t move!
    Brady can’t extend the play!
    Two massive disadvantages
No I am not advocating a running scrambling QB
I am talking about athleticism @ age 45

  5. SteveK Says:

Tonight is going to be absolutely lit. Our team
Has playoff experience, zero pressure, and the MFing Goat calling the shots. The old goat is going to have himself and this team prepared to survive and thrive tonight. Killer-competitive instinct, being at home, and outright coming with an attitude to bully Dallas back home and into their offseason will have us thrive.

It’s time to win or go home, and we have the goat. We have the edge and we will play with fire tonight.

  6. SteveK Says:

Brady is the master at presnap.

He will read, run motions, and have our guys in a position to strategically beat the cowboys all night.

He was never a scrambler, and look for good pass protection to allow the goat to deliver the goods.

He may be old, but old man can still effing ball. We are about to see.

And to all those upset that Brady may leave next year, who cares. Whether he’s back or not, this has been the best 3 yr stretch we’ve had. If you love something set it free, if he resigns and wants us then it was meant to be. But, if another franchise can extend his career and put him in the best pace to win, then so be it- I’ll root for you Tommy bc you are the one true baller to stick it to Belichick.

The “Great GOTSBE”- greatest of the super bowl era, Tom effing Brady.

I can’t wait to watch Vita and Hicks swallow up the Dallas line tonight.

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

If there is one thing I dislike more than the Brady speculation….it’s where Sean Fuc…..ing Payton will end up…….I frankly don’t give a rat’s a$$…..

  8. SteveK Says:

    Exactly, TBBF,

Enjoy this moment and watch our Bucs beat that cowboy ass tonight!

  9. NEfan Says:

This team needs the drive and passion they had in the 2020 playoffs. Don’t see it.

  10. Alanbucsfan Says:

Bengals had 3 starters on Oline out last night- they couldn’t run the ball and Burrow was sacked 4 times.
Bucs success tonight will depend on Oline and Bucs D stopping Pollard and Zeke and pressuring Dak to make mistakes.
Cowboys have a playoff curse because Jerry keeps Jimmy out of the Cowboys Ring of Honor

  11. Jp09 Says:

I can’t wait until the Bucs win tonight so we can hear all the idiots reasons why the Bucs will lose next week too.

We’re in the f@cking playoffs, LFG Bucs win 31-20

  12. SB~LV Says:

    Jp09
    Playoffs start next weekend

  13. SteveK Says:

    LFG Time!

The switch for the playoffs, and a home football game will be noticeable. We have no pressure, and a wealth of experience on our roster, and we host a team that has been good this year, but tends to fold like a tent.

Force turnovers, run the ball, come out with a damn edge. Hit them in the mouth and it will be a decisive Buccaneer win. We are the better team. I believe that.

  14. ModHairKen Says:

Why in the hell would Payton want to work for Jerry Jones?

  15. SteveK Says:

I hope Vita Vea smothers some dudes tonight, Killy hero running game and collapse the pocket big man! Allow the other Defenders to eat bc you consume blockers like pancakes.

  16. NEfan Says:

SB~LV, I get it, not defending Brady’s lack of mobility. Purdy, yes he was able to do that because of counter plays, play action, Burrows got squashed same with Allen, Huntley, yes their O is driven by the QB scrambling same as Bill’s, Lawrence had ALL day to throw, he didn’t have to extend drives and Hebert, maybe 2 times. Skylar??? Who knows he played well but spent most of the day running for his life. How is this different from 2020 and 2021? Mahomes is the best at it but he doesn’t read the field like Brady that’s why he has to rely on it. They ALL have a running game, balance is how you win.

  17. Infomeplease Says:

SB LV, Bottom line, the last 2 superbowls were won by a pocket qb!! All the others won’t last half as long as Brady because linebackers and safety will beat em up!

  18. NEfan Says:

No secret I back Brady. We saw TWO games one with 4 turnovers and one with 3 and BOTH teams won. When Bucs played Cincy, Brady turned the ball over 4 times and Bowels once, the problem is the Bucs D gave up 34 points, that’s the difference Bucs D falters in the second half.

  19. orlbucfan Says:

Please do not even think of that yahoo Payton coming here. Gag a maggot time.

  20. Joe Says:

Bengals had 3 starters on Oline out last night- they couldn’t run the ball and Burrow was sacked 4 times.

Yet they won. How? They adjusted.

Did you see the Bengals offensive line last year? Yet they were one play away from a Super Bowl win.

  21. SteveK Says:

We need to come out ready to rock and roll tonight. Defense needs to give us a stop or two early, and we can establish the run/play action/let TB12 dissect his matchups.

We need pass rush, sure tackling and a turnover in defense.

We need concentration, pass pro and good run blocking from the O.

  22. SteveK Says:

    Joe,

How do you feel about the Bucs coming out and playing hard from the start tonight? I feel damn good about it, and expect it. Hopefully the healthier defense brings the juice and ratchet ups the pressure.

  23. Kentucky Buc Says:

Still amazed at how many of you guys watched the whole season and have no idea what you were looking at. If the line slows down the rush Brady will hit the deep and intermediate shots. I just rewatched the Saints game. He was barely getting his feet set on his drop back before they were all over him. Same thing all year. Carolina and the first qtr of Atlanta the line held up. That’s all it comes down to on offense. Some run game would be nice also.

  24. SB~LV Says:

I thought the Bucs were going to win every game during the 0-26 streak.
I was there for the first home game win against the St Louis Cardinal’s.
I am just calling it as I see it as a detached observer.
Of course I hope the Bucs win , however there ain’t NO hope in football.
The Bucs have been inconsistent every game this year, that does not bode well and it will start and end will how well Brady plays in the passing game tonight.
He game plan should establish spreading the ball around to his receivers. The Bucs are not a OK you know what we are going to do, try and stop us team, the good ones are.

  25. Alanbucsfan Says:

Yet they won. How? They adjusted
lol, Huntley’s fumble and Hubbard’s 98 yard TD ramble had nothing to do with the Bengal’s Oline.

  26. Kentucky Buc Says:

Joe. They also played against a mediocre QB that couldn’t put up points yesterday. If Lamar plays the Bengals probably lose that game. While you highlight the Bengals bad O line last year, they also had a QB who holds the ball. A lot of those sacks are on him just like Brady’s lack of sacks are on him not holding the ball. That can work for Burrow while he’s young but if it continues he will have a short career. He’s already had 1 devastating knee injury.

  27. adam from ny Says:

i agree…if holdout lamar played last night, baltimore moves on…

was he even on the sidelines rooting on his guys?

  28. Fitz Says:

All the talk about we should get a running quarterback like Tua, Murray and Lamar none of whom could finish the season as they were hurt running the ball. Brady has proven that his type of play is by far the best choice but people keep dreaming of a running quarterback. Perhaps they should dream of an offensive line that can hold up for 3 seconds and block when running the ball.

  29. D-Rok Says:

    SBLV,

Brady has NEVER been athletic….like, NEVER! He’s a genius/master of little side-steps in the pocket, and that’s as athletic as he needs to be to be the GOAT.

    Kentucky,
Agree that this game, and these playoffs, will go according to how our O-line plays, or doesn’t play. The line CANNOT allow the pocket to be in Brady’s lap most of the game! Some people (Joe?) have been saying our line is fine evidenced by lack of sacks, to which I disagree: Low sack numbers this year is due to all the dirt-balls and quick, off-target throws. Brady is also the master of avoiding sacks/hits, and that requires mental athleticism.

Good comments, guys, and GO BUCS!!!

  30. SB~LV Says:

    DRok
Brady was more athletic before he was 45

  31. BucsFan81 Says:

Ryan Jensen activated for tonights game. Get that story going Joe. That is big news and a big lift to this team.

  32. SteveK Says:

    LFG Big Red!

  33. geno711 Says:

I hope that the Bucs have a better offensive line performance than Cincy. With Collins and Cappa out, that Cincy line was a piece of shi*et.

Interesting a comment on Allen. Allen was both wonderful and lousy all in the same game. He was exposed a few times by his offensive line as well. Sometimes make wonderful plays and sometimes not so much.

Brady can be the best of them, but if our O line plays like Cincy’s did, I think in the end, he will look like the worst quarterback in the playoffs.

Let’s hope we get there tonight, boys.

  34. Chris Stewart Says:

Breaking Bucs just announced Jensen is back!

  35. #8's Ghost Says:

Practices have been closed to media I believe–is that correct Joe?
I suspect Jensen has been getting plenty 1st team reps in preparation.
Also my desktop getting waitlisted (I think you set my cell phone free). Not that anyone cares to read my asinine comments.

  36. Kentucky Buc Says:

Brady is no more or less athletic than his been the last ten years.

  37. Teflon Don Says:

    Jensen back!!!!!! LFG!!!

  38. adam from ny Says:

    yes……….big red = big news !

    #LFG

  39. Kentucky Buc Says:

    Woot, Jensen

  40. Chop block Says:

All I know is that the best running QB in the NFL couldn’t come close to SV~LV ‘s mouth. All you do is run your suck. Ryan Jensen has been activated for tonights game and, our top 3 cornerbacks are playing, as well as our 3 best safeties for the first time since wk 4.
LFG & Get the W tonight.

  41. Joe Says:

Practices have been closed to media I believe–is that correct Joe?

Practices have been under the same schedule and format since the end of training camp/beginning of preseason. The Bucs have three practices each week where media is given a 20-30 minute window to observe. This window is pretty much worthless as it is when guys are warming up, special teams drills and individual position drills.

  42. #8's Ghost Says:

Thanks Joe–I feel pretty good Jensen has had plenty of reps vs. coming in totally fresh. This is big news.
Hopefully unrelated to Hainsey going down–this has been the plan.

  43. TampaBayRudy Says:

We don’t need a scrambling quarterback. We don’t need a better defense. We don’t need another receiver. We don’t need other running backs. We need coaches who do better with what they have. Starting with the head coach, who doesn’t even know how to manage a game clock, and is literally opposed to scoring too many points, we need new coaches across the board. Anyone who runs a team that scores proficiently in no huddle, and refuses to use it throughout a game when the defense begins to drown, is not head coaching material. Coaches who have 17 weeks worth of statistical information on the run game (lack of) efficiency and do not adjust all season, need to be fired. It is so frustrating to watch people in power hold your prize fighting team’s head underwater and watch it drown. Glazers, Licht, Arians, and especially Bowles can go suck an egg

  44. alton green Says:

    SBLV: you are correct BUT;
    Tom is slow
    can’t move
    can’t extend plays

For 23 f’n years and 10 SB appearences winning 7 rings. Kepp it going. The entire football worls know those facts. Keep it going Tommy Boy

  45. Bosch Says:

Joe, the Bengals May have adjusted, but that is not why they won. Without the 98 yard scoop and score, a 14 point swing, they lose the game. Please do not interpret this as defending Leftover. He is the reason for at least 4 Bucs losses.

  46. Cobraboy Says:

@SB: this Buc’s team has been remarkably consistent.

They have underperformed in 56 of 68 quarters this season, 82%.

There is a reason they are 8-9, a losing record.

Why should we expect anything different this evening?

  47. SB~LV Says:

    Alton
    He can’t NOW!
He can barely get off the ground, he moves like an old man, which he is for a football player.

  48. Joe Says:

Please do not interpret this as defending Leftover.

Leftwich (?) has to do something right to be defended.

  49. Anonymous Says:

Most of you doom and groomers are just wrong. You’re not seeing the forest because the trees are in your way. You seem to be living in games past and frankly the Bucs got you suckered just like this arsehole Shein. “The Bucs defense sucks” he just stated. Is that right? Ok, you keep believing that genius. And THAT’S just one of the reasons you’re an idiot. I’m just gonna have to agree to disagree with all of you. You just don’t see it. And I get it. In your heart of hearts you don’t think I see it…..
I’m telling you right now. We Win this game. Jenson WAS GONNA HAPPEN. “DUH!”
In fact not only is Tampa’s offense about to come alive “just like the test run in the last game” BUT YOU ARE ALSO ABOUT TO SEE SOMETHING BRAND NEW!
LEFTWICH IS ON MY SHART LIST…. BUT he’s about to shine BECAUSE he has help. I KNOW I’m going under the bus for my words BUT MARK THEM.
I’m telling you its going to be shock and awe! Do you REALLY THINK that Bruce Arian’s is going to let his failed experiment (Byron Leftwich) just flop with his name and legacy on the line? I SERIOUSLY DOUBT IT! He maybe in the back row (ARIANS) BUT HE’S STILL IN THE BUILDING AND STILL ON THE PAYROLL!

And the organization IS COUNTING ON the league and especially the Cowboys to go to sleep on the offense JUST LIKE THE USUAL GROUP OF NAY SAYERS that live right here on this web blog. YOU GUYS ARE EASY AND A BUNCH OF SET UP SUCKERS THAT ARE RIPE FOR THE TAKING!

Man, yall really think that there isn’t a plan in place? HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!A

I SURE HOPE YOU DIDN’T BET YOUR MORTGAGE ON THIS GAME! ESPECIALLY IF YOU BET AGAINST TAMPA AND THE HIDDEN BRUCE ARIANS! POOR NEFAN! Damn buddy (NEfan)…. Bruce Arians ALREADY LIVES RENT FREE IN YOUR HEAD! And if you bet your money against Tom, Bruce, and yes even Licht (IN THIS GAME) then you better go ahead and get infront of the competition and pick your best street corner to live at now. Better find the best roomy box to “IF” you put your money where your mouth is! Careful! Toothless Sam has already picked out that spot on the corner for himself!
You guys with blinders on better FIGURE IT OUT before you really look foolish!
    O wait a minute!
MAN YOU GUYS ARE EASY! JUST LIKE THAT JAG OFF ADAM SHRIEK! SUCKERS ALL! And that’s ok with me….. Suckers!

Yah, you keep saying it just can’t happen. BWahahahhahahha!

  50. NEfan Says:

Jensen said if this is going to be Brady’s last game in Tampa I want to be there, powder me up. I would love to see him at guard and Hainsley center. That’s the best oline you’re going to get folks.

  51. Jeff’s real dad Says:

Ya cuz being a Brady d rider makes you an expert then I guess

  52. Darin Says:

I would think any coach that loses to bowles and Leftwich could be fired. I’m assuming we all watched the horror show this season. I saw no reason to believe the Bucs will win tonight. And that’s coming from someone who used to think they’d win every week. Yes even when they were 0-26 and 2-14 every year. Disgusting display of coaching. And it’ll be on full display in mere hours! Get your popcorn ready

  53. SB~LV Says:

    Darin is a realist
    Great post

  54. NEfan Says:

Darin, why did you have to give us the reality check, the fan base was on a high with Jensen back?

  55. Alanbucsfan Says:

Some of y’all are really full of it

  56. firethecannons Says:

I like that the Bucs are the underdog

  57. Oxycondoms Says:

I come here for the pictures. I miss the jameis ones

  58. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

I remember reading that Jerry Jones said he will not fire Mike McCarthy, win or lose.
But, as we all know, Jerry Jones makes up his own rules, as he goes along.
A good butt whipping by the Bucs tonight might get Jerry Jones to go back on his word, and pull the plug on his coach.

  59. NEfan Says:

    Jeff, what’s on your mind???

  60. sasquatch Says:

I’m more concerned with making sure Leftwich is gone
