Bill Parcells: Bucs May Want To Rebuild

January 27th, 2023

Hall of Fame coach on Bucs.

Todd Bowles may not want to hear this advice from his old coach.

Hall of Fame coach Bill Parcells is a Todd Bowles guy. Parcells hired Bowles to be his defensive backs coach when he took over the Cowboys and still calls Bowles one of his homeboys.

And when Parcells moved to South Florida to be the shot-caller for the Dolphins, he made sure Bowles came along for the ride

So when asked by The33rdTeam.com to break down each postseason team, Parcells admitted it seems the future of the Bucs is based on what Tom Brady wants to do. And if Brady leaves or retires, Parcells said it ought to be time for the Bucs to pull the pin, blow the place up and rebuild.

I think they’re probably the worst off of all the playoff teams, and they could lose their quarterback, Tom Brady. They’re an older team, too. I think they’re in rebuild mode. They’ve got a lot to do to stay competitive next season.

Of course, this won’t go over well with Bowles.

When Bowles held his season-ending press conference, Bowles was asked if the Bucs were rebuilding or reloading. Bowles was clear.

“You never want to rebuild – you’re always reloading,” Bowles said.

His old boss, it seems, disagrees. At least if Brady waves goodbye.

This is a copy cat league, and only the greats look around and recognizes what it takes to be successful in this league. We had a win now formula and it worked! But the NOW is over, i believe someone like carr can make us competitive for a few years or heck draft AR15 from gators but it’s time to move on from Brady. I’m more than appreciative for what he’s done but it’s over. I won’t to be relevant for the next 5,6 years like bills, kc etc.

  2. BucfaninMi Says:

Yeah draft another crap QB from Florida.

  3. Leopold Stotch Says:

Trask hasn’t even gotten a fair shot. Yeah I’m a bit biased, but I’ve seen the kid play. I think he can be the guy. AR 15? Good lord absolutely not. He’s this years Malik Willis.

  4. BucU Says:

I’d prefer to move on from Brady and the older veterans. With Todd Bowles running the show why bother holding on to these expensive way past their prime vets? Bowles destroyed any chance of winning it all again the last 2 yrs. His track record sucks as far as I’m concerned.

  5. JA Says:

    AR15? You gotta be kidding.
This past year completed only 53% of his passes with 17 TD’s and 9 picks. And that’s in college where one needs a search party to find a decent DB.
Meanwhile, we have a guy on the sideline who had:
43 TD’s and 8 picks, who completed 70% of his final year college passes.
And this guy can’t sniff the field.
Yeah, let’s get AR15, a subpar college QB who would guarantee us another decade in the cellar.
People who think this kid is ready for the NFL are delusional at best. Seems somewhere along the line Richardson is listening to bad advice. He should have played another year of college football.

  6. beano Says:

AR15? Are you kidding? He had a terrible 2021 season, followed by a terrible 2022 season. He’s just another “athletic” running-back-posing-as-a-quarterback who can’t pass, lacks the mental acumen to play quarterback, but is overhyped nonetheless by the powers that be to advance the “woke” agenda.

And this comes from someone who has two degrees from the University of Florida and has seen many UF “athletic”, bazooka-armed, AR15s before: Doug Johnson, Feleipe Franks, Emory Jones, and now AR15. I’m sure I’m missing others.

  7. Hodad Says:

This teams S.B. window hasn’t just closed, it’s been boarded shut! The only smart thing to do is to blow it up. The only reason the Glazers would want Tom back now is for cash flow. They know we’re not a SB team with him, but he’ll put cash in the bank still. Best thing could happen now is Tom leaving, and the wrecking ball pulling up to 1 Buc.

  8. BucsBeBack (Artist formally known as: BringBucsBack) Says:

Parcells is a legend but, I think “they’re old” is a lazy take. We are old at QB & that changes when TB12 moves on. Everywhere else there are older veterans mixed with mostly younger veterans. I think the more accurate statement would be that we need to get FASTER, SMARTER & BETTER!

I (like others) simply am not sure that Bowles is the HC to lead the reload/ rebuild or whatever you want to call it, however. I am one that also believes that Licht’s success has been most fortuitous, as well. The organization needs to get smarter!!

  9. Allbuccedup Says:

Bowles is an organizational idiot. Hes a good defensive coach but thats where it ends. Sometimes I think Licht is telling him what to say. Because remember Bowles said the team will look different next year because of free agency and cap space. If thats not a rebuid I don’t what is.

  10. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Call it what you want, but it is obvious we need some better players.

  11. YucsBall Says:

    NO TO ANTHONY RICH

  12. Dubcity Says:

If the Bucs have a bad season they’ll fire the HC.. regardless of a rebuild… because that’s what fans are already screaming for.. he will literally be a spot filler.. which is extremely disrespectful to him.. and every fans wet dream.. to fire another coach.. thats all fans know how to do

  13. SB~LV Says:

“You never want to rebuild “
Of course teams have to rebuild from time to time!
It’s actually easier to accept that you are rebuilding, it takes the pressure off of unrealistic expectations.
Watch the 4 teams this weekend especially the QB and skill positions and come back on Monday and defend what reminds you of this year’s 18 ( flatline games)
Sick to my stomach that the Glazer’s think that Bowles is a champion, that Bowles can motivate and inspire and lead a roster to play at levels they never experienced
It’s gonna be a wasted REBUILDING year in 2023 because when the new coach comes in 2024 he won’t have his players for his scheme and the veteran talent that got drug through the miserable 2023 will be one year older.
If Bowles is the head coach for the coming season it will be a setback and we will be starting from scratch after a wasted season.

  14. SB~LV Says:

    Oh ! I forgot
Hire Kellen Moore as 2023 HC

  15. Gofortheface30 Says:

Bill I know you’re a top 4-5 coach of all time and mentored the likes of Bill Belichek, but the commenters here on Joe Bucs fan have forgotten more football than you will ever know sir. Beware, as a lot of commenters here will get some serious menstrual cramps. Don’t you dare say rebuild. We couldn’t rebuild with jameis so they have their little PTSD over it, and think the team is haunted. Stay in your lane bill you know nothing

  16. stpetebucfan Says:

The cupboard is not bare!! It DOES need restocking. Get the right players and a QB like Mayfield can win with this team!

2 ProBowl receivers, one HOF and perhaps the other as well, too soon to anoint CG but he’s well on his way.

One of the best right sides of an OL in the NFL with Mason and Wirfs and add Kieft and there is blocking talent. Two good, sometimes great RB’s in Lennie and White both of whom are also excellent targets out of the backfield.

The Bucs have plenty of draft picks to replace Dean and others on the D who are probably too expensive to keep. The biggest question for me on D centers entirely around ONE player. DW showed DB55 potential in that SB run. He’s played well but is not nearly as effective as he was. IF DW returns to the player who can single handedly take over a game with his speed from the middle of the D that will truly enable the Bucs to play dominant D once again.

  17. Frank Pillow Says:

Look at the list of OCs they’re reportedly talking to—that, plus keeping Todd around tells me 23 is (and absolutely needs to be) all about purging the roster. Getting under the cap, drafting well and preparing to make a leap in 2024 (with a new HC).

  18. darengibo Says:

If history has taught us anything….When it comes to Parcells and his takes on Tampa Bay Bucs, it is usually a lie.

  19. SlyPirate Says:

THE MOST INTERESTING UNDER-THE-RADAR TAKE …

    Goedeke.
Dude was a BUST at LG and he sounds like a complete d-bag … BUT at the end of the year he spelled Wirfs at RT. His natural position. He did well. Could he take over at RT after an offseason of strength training?

    Smith.
Most penalties. Lost Bucs 2 games. Poor me attitude. Huge price tag. He needs to go.

    Wirfs.
Plug in Wirfs anywhere on the OL and he’s a Pro Bowler. Would he play LT? If so, the Bucs only need a new LG. This draft has some good ones available in R2-3.

  20. CM Says:

Parcells is right and they should start with replacing Bowles. Why anyone thought a coach whose record was 24-40 with the Jets would suddenly morph into a winning coach is beyond me.

  21. AlwaysBucs Says:

Do any of these analyst look at our roster past the QB?

Are you rebuilding if you have guys like Jensen, Wirfs, Shaq Mason, Mike Evans, Godwin, Vita Vea, Devin White, Antoine Winfield and a few young players with promise like Rachaad White and Otton?

Lot of pieces here for a competent coaching staff

  22. Brandon Says:

People keep saying that the Bucs are an older team…. who? Brady and David? That’s it. Nobody else is in their 30’s. The secondary is very young, DWhite, Vea, Logan Hall, JTS, are extremely young. Offensively, Wirfs, Evans, Godwin, Gage, Rachaad White, and even Fournette are young. The only “old guys” on the team are Brady and David and they aren’t even under contract… or Gholston or Hicks.

  23. D-Rok Says:

As for Richardson, heard an interesting nugget on Movin’ The Chains a few days ago. Kirwan called it the “12% Rule” – a general rule/observation about college QB’s starting as rookies in NFL. Whatever their completion % is in college, expect a 12% drop as a rookie.

Kirwan said if Richardson had 53% last year, if he starts this year, expect him to have roughly a 41% completion as a rookie, and Miller agreed.

Do the Bucs REALLY want to have a 41% QB? Sounds like a nitemare…

  24. Show Me the TDs Says:

If Brady stays, reload. If Brady goes, pull the pin. Simple as that!

  25. Allbuccedup Says:

Hopefully the new offensive coordinator will have a qb in mind to pair with Trask and lets hope its not 3 teams in 2 years Mayfield or int machine Donald.

  26. Show Me the TDs Says:

Joe, why are my comments constantly being monitored, even the completely vanilla comments? Then some just disappear.

  27. Goatfarmer Says:

Parcells misses one fine point. To rid the Bucs of the Bowels of Toad, JL and the Glazers need to do exactly what the Bloweszo says in 2023. That way when they finish 3-14 it can’t be due to some “rebuild”. No no no.

Give him his year of reload or blown loads or whatever he wants to call it. Then send him off to pursue his fishing charter captaincy or whatever he’ll do after football.

Then rebuild or whatever. I’ll be too old to see the playoffs again but whatever.

  28. Craig Says:

We already have the gators QB that all after will be compared to, the one that caused questions about if the gators had life after him (it took a few years).

There is no maybe in the need to rebuild. Something drastic has to happen for several reasons. Bowles cleaner may not call it a rebuild, but it will be. Too many over the hill plays and too many too young players.

The Bucs need a new base to build from, the old one crumbled under that 8-10 record.

  29. Fartman Says:

f parcels… he had the chance to rebuild the Bucs… twice

  30. NEfan Says:

Now I know where Bowles got his checked out attitude. Back in the 90’s Parcels took the Patriots to the SB against GB. Parcells was set to take over the Jets GM role the next season. He was out going into the SB, so much that he didn’t fly home with the team after the game. D bag.

  31. Infomeplease Says:

Bowles did well under good head coaches like Parcells and Ariens!!! Bowles did horrible without them, when he was “the man” even when he had the goat as his qb!!! I don’t expect him to change his losing ways! This is a “what have you done for me lately league”!! Bowles brings nothing to the table when he serves as Head Coach!! Nothing!!! He will be fired!! Hopefully before the end of the next season!! The rebuild should start with a new head coach!!!!

  32. Bucamania Says:

Never throw good money after bad. Cut your losses and start the rebuild.

  33. Jesse james Says:

Hilarious listening to UF v FSU fans on here, they don’t even realize they’re the exact same people, just opposite ends of the spectrum. As a UF alum, AR15 is ABSOLUTELY not the answer, but stop w the fake righteousness of your hatred. UF v FSU is like listening to Boston v NYY fans, you’re literally the same, just root for the opposite side. Anyway, if Brady leaves, and w our current cap hell, next year is not going to be good, no? So am I the only one who thinks taking a chance on cheaper options like Mike White or Huntley at QB could make sense? Huntley didn’t play too great this season when given a chance, but had NO help at WR, and White looks like a gamer in an offense in NY that was an atrocity. Time to start thinking out of the box if we want any chance at being relevant next year. And if not, F it, start Trask and hope for the best, or accept a lost season. If you can’t get passed where a player played in college, your Bucs Fandom is in question, and your opinions should be revoked lol. Trask was garbage for years at UF and took massive strides before getting his shot at UF, and was really good when he got his shot, so who’s to say he can’t do that now? (Though I will admit, I don’t have high hopes, but none of us really no, right?). At the end of the day, go bucs!!!! And leave your college football love to a college football website.
