A Look At Kellen Moore’s Résumé

January 30th, 2023

Former Dallas OC Kellen Moore.

[UPDATE: 12:06 p.m.:] So Kellen Moore, who until last night was the Cowboys’ offensive coordinator since 2019, has only coached in Dallas.

Moore, per NFL Network, is very much on the Bucs’ radar as a candidate to be offensive coordinator. Previously, he spent one season as Dallas’ quarterbacks coach and was a backup QB for the Lions and Cowboys over seven seasons.

So the only starting quarterback 34-year-old Moore has ever coached is Dak Prescott, along with developing undrafted backup Cooper Rush to the point he was 4-1 as a fill-in starter this season. Andy Dalton also revived his career as a Dallas backup in 2020, going 4-5 a starter while completing 65 percent of his passes.

Moore’s offenses have been pretty good. Joe tries not to watch Cowboys games so Joe cannot type with authority on Moore.

Joe listens regularly is the “GM Shuffle” podcast co-hosted by long-time NFL suit Michael Lombardi. On this podcast, Lombardi says he hates Moore and rags on him often.

But as Joe has learned, Lombardi destroys every coach who has never spent time in the Bill Parcells/Bill Belicheat tree (Lombardi loves Todd Bowles). So Joe take Lombardi’s critiques with a grain of salt.

The numbers suggest Moore is doing something right. Here’s a look at how Moore’s offenses have produced.

2019
Points per game: fifth
Rushing yards per game: fifth
Passing yards per game: second (behind the Bucs and Jameis Winston)

2020
Points per game: 17th
Rushing yards per game: 17th
Passing yards per game: 25th

2021
Points per game: first
Rushing yards per game: ninth
Passing yards per game: second (to Bucs)

2022
Points per game: fourth
Rushing yards per game: ninth
Passing yards per game: 14th

What impresses Joe most about Moore is how the Cowboys barely missed a beat when Prescott was knocked out of their Week 1 game.

Moore was able to craft gameplans for Rush to go 4-1 in those five starts. That’s impressive adjusting on the fly.

Did Moore have talent at running back? He sure did. And in only one season did he have a rushing attack that was not ranked in the top-10.

So yeah, Joe believes Moore is an upgrade over Leftwich. How good is he at developing quarterbacks? Joe isn’t sure, but based on what he did with Rush, Moore may be fine developing a quarterback if Tom Brady doesn’t return and the Bucs #CollapseFor Caleb.

[UPDATE: 12:06 p.m.:] The Chargers hired Moore this morning

  1. Hodad Says:

Moore is being made scapegoat for Dak’s poor play. That said, not impressed with Moore.

  2. Hodad Says:

If the Bucs are smart, they’ll pluck an offensive coach from Philly for OC. Two good coaches on that staff that will get OC jobs somewhere soon.

  3. Captain Dan Lawrence Says:

I’ve been following Moore since his days at Boise State, and have yet to hear a team mate or coach who didn’t say he’s the smartest guy in the room.

  4. Todd Says:

Gimme Monkman & Stetson Bennett and let’s get to work!

  5. Ed Kerber Says:

I’d like to see Monke. As OC, Moore as qb coach

  6. Rawspine Says:

I too go out of my way to avoid Cowboy games. No matter who the Bucs bring in though, the natives won’t be happy with anything when the next season begins.

  7. SufferingSince76 Says:

I just hope the Bucs don’t fool around until all the decent OC candidates are gone.

  8. DoooshLaRue Says:

Moore has the most punchable face in the NFL.
Vapid mouth breather……. but still better than BL.

  9. GMC hater Says:

If cowboys were smart they would’ve fired McCarthy instead of Moore.

  10. Da Bucs Guy Says:

Hire Moore if Dallas O-line comes with him.

  11. OrlandoBucFan Says:

Maybe we can get Moore and Pollard. That would be great! Dreaming out loud.

  12. Jack Clark Says:

Ewww 🤢 no Cowboys coaches and no New England coaches please!!!

  13. Letsbucinggo Says:

    No Moore

  14. SB~LV Says:

I’ve been pimping him as our HC !

  15. YucsBall Says:

    yuck

  16. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Im sorry if the bucs have a shot at this dude and do not go get it, then they are dumb; Moore took a pedestrian offense with an average QB and led them to a shot at the NFC title game. He turned Tony Pollar, Schultz and scrubs at WRs plus a top 32 QB into that offense, imagine him here in Tampa with teh weapons here

  17. Bucsfanman Says:

I can’t believe that people are still pining for “has-been/re-tread” coaches!
Moore has done a good job with Dallas given the turnover machine’s (Dak) penchant for gifting teams possessions.
As much as I HATE Dallas, this dude led a successful offense.

Predictability has been a major problem for this franchise over the years.

  18. HC Grover Says:

Get Cooper Rush he was released by Dallas.

  19. SB~LV Says:

Who makes the call on who comes to interview, JL ?

  20. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Moore will be great if Brady comes back. If not, rather see us draft an Offensive Coordinator who knows the RPO Type of attack the Eagles run.
But of course we will need an RPO type QB.

  21. Paratrooper Buc Says:

As others have said, Moore was the scapegoat for Dak/McCarthy. I don’t know who would be an upgrade over him who isn’t employed. Bucs would be foolish to overlook a guy who actually “adjusts and schemes” with who has to work with as opposed to “Mr. Hey diddle diddle run the ball up the middle on 1st and 10.”

  22. DFW Buc Says:

My faith in the Bucs being able to make good fast decisions before they end up with a whatever pick is not good. Too many question marks with our head coach, quarterback, offensive line, etc for a indecisive organization. C’mon man!

  23. NEfan Says:

I haven’t seem anything special in Moore’s O schemes. Sure they beat up on the Bucs because the D stinks and on O leftnut couldn’t figure out how to keep Parsons out of Brady’s face. His solution was one on one with Smith and once in a while Lenny would dive and miss his block. I saw that happen twice. I also believe there are much better options out there for Moore than the Bucs.

  24. Rich S Says:

He would be great on telling Bowles what’s wrong with our D….he should know, he destroyed our defence.

  25. SB~LV Says:

    Say !
Did any of the HC body language yesterday remind you of Bowles ?

  26. Buc50 Says:

Monken would be my first choice but if either of these guys have chance to go to San Deigo and coach Justin Herbert, they should run not walk.

  27. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

The Cowboys have always had good Offensive Lines and Great Running Backs.
That said, Moore did a great job when Prescott went down.
He will probably go to San Diego

  28. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

The Cowboys have always had good Offensive Lines and Great Running Backs.
That said, Moore did a great job when Prescott went down.
He will probably go to San Diego

I keep getting hit with that duplicate content filter, for some reason

  29. Conte Piscatelli Says:

I’m shocked he was made a scape goat. I see Moore as one of the better offensive coordinators in the league and guy who will likely be a very good head coach in this league.

  30. Your Mom Says:

I feel like these days quarterbacks develop mostly in college anyway.

  31. SB~LV Says:

    Hey!

Did any of the HC body language yesterday remind you of Bowles

  32. NEfan Says:

Dallas keeps hanging on to Dak & Elliot like they’re God’s. Both are average.

  33. Bosch Says:

I don’t understand why the cowboys would have fired Moore, but then again, we’re talking Jerry Jones, here.

  34. mark2001 Says:

Upgrade to Lefty? Yes. The answer to our biggest problems? Not sure.

  35. sasquatch Says:

It would be reasonable to wonder, if he’s so great why would Dallas let him go?

He’s only coached with one organization where he knows everyone. He’s never had to go into a new organization, establish respect of his players immediately while at the same time implementing a new offense. What I’m pointing out is the OC hire needs to be more than an X’s and O’s guy. He’s got to have great rapport with players and good leadership skills to be the right guy. Of course, that’s true with all the coaches they’re interviewing… but a less experienced playcaller who is a real leader could end up being a better choice. The choice has to be a guy who is revered by his players.

Monken is a better candidate then Kellen Moore, IMO… mainly because he’s had more experience overall.

One of the other young coaches may have an edge on Moore as a leader and a teacher, and most have had experience in several stops with different organizations. That matters.

Moore has had success in Dallas, but I’m just a little wary. Tread lightly. I’m not saying he’s not they guy, I just hope the interview process involves plenty of questions and background on his relationships with players and how he views a transition to another organization (for the first time).

  36. TampaBayBucsFanSince1976 Says:

Until you upgrade your Oline-none of it will matter.

  37. Conte Piscatelli Says:

So I read that the team and Moore mutually agreed he would not return. I wonder if he either wants to get out before McCarthy is fired next year, or if he has an opportunity to perhaps be a college head coach available.

  38. SB~LV Says:

Watching those games yesterday, we are lacking in big play offensive talent, we have some excellent players that can keep the chains moving but like Dungy’s defensive philosophy they will need to punt sooner or later.
All one needs to do is step back and take a long view of how football is moving and has been moving for decades. Faster and faster and faster with QB’s that can move when the situation requires

  39. mark2001 Says:

Nothing against Moore. But in Dallas, you know who is really driving the Offense, don’t you? It is Mike McCarthy. He drove it in Green Bay, in coordination and friction at times with Rodgers. So the question is, how much was McCarthy, and how much was Moore. I don’t know. Anyone with a Dallas pipeline?

  40. ClwJB Says:

He or Monken are major upgrades from Lefty – would be happy with either

  41. TombsEN Says:

It seems like Moore wore out his welcome in Dallas and fans were rejoicing with this move, not too many people on the Cowboys boards were upset that he was let go. I think that most of the candidates interviewed are really good and I feel that this team will be a better team next year.

  42. Joe in Michigan Says:

Did Dallas let him go because he was going to interview for the LA Chargers OC position?

  43. SB~LV Says:

Anyone see anything that reminds you of Bowles in the head coaching yesterday.
We got a zombie bot as HC
    Prune the stunted coach

  44. Zoocomics Says:

Nothing will make anyone happy on these boards, I’m amazed how many people would say no to Kellen Moore because he is what? The Dallas OC? The stats do not lie everyone, take a look. This guy brings a great pre-snap motion offense, and they score points, a lot of them. He is exactly what we need here in Tampa.

I’m actually shocked that we’d even have a chance to interview and/or land him as an OC, ALL THE WAY up to the loss to San Francisco in the playoffs, hell during the freaking broadcast either vs Tampa or San Fran, they were saying he’d be getting a head coaching gig possibly as soon as next season. And now they send him packing? Makes no sense. At least leftwich was sent packing after the offense collapsed historically in one of the worst divisions of all time, and with Tom Brady starting every game… yet Moore’s offense lost 5 games in arguably the toughest division in the NFC? and Kellen Moore’s offense ran with Cooper Rush winning 4/5 starts, and the one loss for that stretch was against Phili!?

He is a nice offensive mind that I think has incredible upside, and potential. We land Moore, it will be a huge offensive swing. Tampa needs to make this happen. I don’t care if it’s with Tom Brady or not. This would be an awesome signing.

  45. Marine Buc Says:

    K. Moore > B. Lefty
    JB Cooter > B. Lefty
    T. Monken > B. Lefty

I’m OK with anyone over the flat billed mouth breather…

  46. mark2001 Says:

Zoo. You always interview with multiple teams, just to drive the price up and show you have multiple opportunities. It is no measure of just how strong your chances are to hire a guy or not. Doubt Monken comes back… how many people go back to a company that already fired them. Moore? Sounds like the Chargers most likely. Still. You want to talk to these guys, even if you are primarily being used as a negotiating tool. Remember how Gruden played it?

  47. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Zoo

    I agree.

    K. Moore led a pretty solid offense for a first rate organization for 4 seasons regardless of being stuck with Dak Prescott as his QB…

I would be interested to see what he could accomplish in Tampa.

  48. richbucsfan Says:

Todd, it’s a No re: Stetson Bennett. It is obvious he has a serious drinking problem. Rehab first, then maybe football.

  49. BuxfaninTX Says:

Please no! Us here in Dallas are happy that he’s gone

  50. Marine Buc Says:

    @ rich

    Oh come on!

If you haven’t been blackout drunk at 6 am then you ain’t livin…

    LOL.

  51. NYC Buc Says:

Moore hired by LAC per Rapport

  52. Craig Says:

Moore is a great consolation prize if Monken isn’t the guy.

I only say that because I think Monken will make a better HC within the year and a half the Bowles cleaner has enough slack for.

Moore might end up being a better HC, but that is five or six years away.

  53. Marine Buc Says:

    @ BuxfaninTX

What are your opinions on QB Dak Prescott?

  54. Joshua porter Says:

Cowboys were the only team tonrun the ball on 1st down more than the bucs.. please god no

  55. A Bucs Fan Says:

He went to the Chargers already! Herbert > Bucs.

  56. SB~LV Says:

    Rich / Stetson
It remains to be seen if he has a “serious “ drinking problem.
If there is a history… sure
Otherwise something similar that many youngsters go through in those years.
Certainly will be investigated a little closer than other draft candidates.
In the big picture it is not a red flag yet, more like boneheaded young man event

  57. Ben Harvey Says:

Moore off the market. It appears no one wants to join Bowles in Tampa. This should be a hint that Bowles needs to go as well.

  58. Marine Buc Says:

    @ SB

    I agree.

However – Stetson is 25 years old… lol

I would still give him a shot – especially if he is available in the 2nd round.

He reminds me of a more mobile Drew Brees.

  59. Bosch Says:

Agree with Ben. Bucs Are seeking an OC when they should be seeking a HC. What do Glazers – Lite expect to accomplish with Bowels as HC?

  60. Joe Swanson Says:

Maybe with Moore leaving and Quinn staying means Jones is getting rid of McCarthy and signing Sean Payton I noticed Payton wasn’t at the game Sunday with the rest of the guys.

  61. Simeon97 Says:

    going going gone

  62. The Anomaly Says:

we never had a chance LOL

I would like a little more reality in here

Sounds like teh fanbase still thinks it is 2020

We are on a one way elevator down

  63. KC Buc Says:

Dude didn’t even blink to evaluate other opportunities…would have loved to be a fly on the wall as Kellen would have explained to Bowles how he carved up his defense like a Thanksgiving turkey

  64. Jonny Says:

Moore’s offensive scheme focusing on balancing run with pass is exactly what was lacking in Tampa. He will be a good philosophical fit with Bowles. But the talent on Bucs offense may not be enough to entice him even if we are interested in him. I still prefer Clint Kubiak.

  65. unbelievable Says:

    LOL that didn’t take long…

  66. Aceofaerospace Says:

    The chargers signed Moore.

  67. Conte Piscatelli Says:

Still believe Moore to chargers was a done deal and yesterday they made the decision to part ways public

  68. Elita Vita Says:

    @Conte Piscatelli

Agreed. Sure seemed like he was picked up quickly. Perhaps already arranged. Still I’m disappointed we didn’t land him. Monken?

  69. bucs4life Says:

I said this one month ago here and I will say it again: Moore and Bieniemy should be head coaches in the NFL. If only we could hire one of them to go at it alongside Brady, we would smash any competition in the NFC. That’s pretty clear. We need an offensive chessmaster, Brady to execute, a good offensive line and defensive playmakers. Do our Bucs want to win? This is it.

  70. richbucsfan Says:

Word across the NFL…Stay away from Tampa Bay. Why do you suppose Moore signed so quickly? He wanted no part of the Tampa Bay train wreck.
The HC detests offense and will be fired after the ‘23 season. The best thing the Bucs can do is clean house now and hire a new coach and staff.

Word across the NFL…Stay away from Tampa Bay. Why do you suppose Moore signed so quickly?

Um, that answer is pretty easy. JUSTIN HERBERT. of course the jobs with elite QBs get snatched up quickly. That doesn’t mean coaches are going to “stay away from Tampa”

  72. mark2001 Says:

What I’ve been saying Rich. But the fount of endless hope springs forever.

  73. Wut The Buc Says:

    He’s gone, just like TB12

  74. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I can see getting an OC from the Chiefs…but the Eagles are lucky they even made it so far. Getting the OC from them is likely going to backfire.

If we are recruiting from another team, make it a team that has consistently produced at the QB position, especially with young QBs.

And if we go with a veteran…well, Carr is one option.

  75. mark2001 Says:

Wouldn’t be too worried about losing him . I think McCarthy was basically running it, anyway. And he didn’t get what he/Jones wanted out of him, so they cut him loose. McCarthy will be calling the plays next year, right?

  76. Oxycondoms Says:

    I say hire a gruden

  77. mark2001 Says:

Oxy… they would take the interview, and take a job elsewhere. Once you burn a Gruden, you are on the list.
