Russell Gage May Have Saved The Season

December 26th, 2022

Critical catch.

So, what would you pick as the play of the game?

There were several to choose from. Ryan Succop’s game-winning 40-yard field goal in overtime is a good choice. Will Gholston’s late fumble recovery is another one. His play at midfield prevented the Cardinals from building on their three-point lead late in the game.

Joe might have to go with Russell Gage.

This Joe has been hard on Gage simply because he has barely been seen much less heard from this season. He injured his hamstring in OTA and aside from about two weeks at the start of training camp when he was lighting up the Bucs’ offense, Gage has been a no-show. The dude is always hurt. (Yes, Joe realizes Gage had 40 catches entering Sunday’s game.)

But after last night, Joe is giving Gage slack. On the Bucs’ game-winning drive, Gage sold out to make a catch and paid dearly for it.

Brady threw to the left side for Gage for a 13-yard catch and when Gage caught the ball he was lit up by Isaiah Simmons. Gage couldn’t get up and had to leave the game. The same thing had happened to Gage three plays earlier on a key 23-yard grab. But despite getting totally crushed, Gage somehow held on to the ball each time! First down Bucs on the Cardinals-19, well within Succop’s range for the game-winner three plays later.

If the Bucs somehow manage to win the division, that catch by Gage is going to be a monster play. He may have bailed out the Bucs’ season by selling out his body and hanging onto the ball.

Well done.

He’s a damn good player who has taken far too much abuse from a bunch of blowhard intolerant a-holes because of his injuries.

  2. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I honestly expect to lose him to injury after tonight…

  3. Winny Testaverde Says:

Hopefully that extra effort didn’t cost him his ACL. Brutal game/sport…

Russell is like the ‘22 version of Bert Emmanuel.

    Just try.

  6. Buccos Says:

Gage is a quality wideout. If he can stay on the field he will be productive. Not too many #4 db’s can stay with him

So clutch and tough in OT.

Hey HomerSimpsonRocks, I like your phrasing there about Gage (“So clutch and tough in OT”) It would go well with the track “So Ruff, So Tuff” by Roger Troutman🎵 😄👍

Gage is a very good WR…….been injured from the beginning but when he plays, he produces.

I have to agree. Gage was great last night.

Brady threw inside? I think you mean between the 1 & 7. He got the wind knocked out of him. I am more concerned about the twisted knee later in the game. No a bad recruit by BRADY!!!

Hopefully Gage will be OK to play next Sunday but he may have had his best game as a Buc, at least his most clutch game. Playoff Lenny came to play and ran hard. He had a couple of bruising runs where he looked like the Lenny we saw down the stretch in our Super Bowl run.

Imagine making headlines just for doing the bare minimum of your job. One that you’re paid tens of millions to do. You’ve set a low bar, Joe

    Russell played lights out.
