Leaving Tom Brady In To Get Beat Up

December 14th, 2022

Columnist questions Todd Bowles.

With the Bucs being 6-7 in such a horrible division despite so much talent on both sides of the ball, Todd Bowles can be called out for a bunch of mistakes.

Allowing and/or approving one of the worst offensive gameplans Joe has ever seen in a loss to the Steelers, pulling the ball out of Tom Brady’s hands in Cleveland and various times not going for it on fourth down in enemy territory are some of the big ones.

So this is why Joe isn’t freaking out that Bowles kept Brady, 45, on the field in a blowout by the 49ers last Sunday.

Jeff Kerr of CBS Sports was unnerved by Bowles’ decision.

Todd Bowles makes head-scratching decision to keep Tom Brady in: The Buccaneers were down 28 points early in the fourth quarter to the 49ers with Brady getting pulverized on a wet field. Bowles decided to send his quarterback out there for what purpose?

Brady does decide when he wants to leave the game, but the Buccaneers have to think long-term for 2022. Tampa Bay plays Cincinnati this week and has no shot to beat the Bengals without Brady.

Bowles should be questioned for this decision, especially for a quarterback that was pressured 19 times and hit seven. Didn’t make sense to keep Brady in a game where his team wasn’t scoring 35 points — let alone 10.

Brady should have been pulled. Kerr isn’t wrong. Bowles said the Bucs were working on plays they needed to polish so why not work on them in a game.

Joe gets that but talk about eliminating the element of surprise? Now the entire NFL has seen you run those plays.

As Joe stated, there are other decisions Bowles has made that are far worse. But Kerr is still right: Leaving an immobile 45-year old quarterback in the game against a bruising defense isn’t the wisest move if you are still trying to make the playoffs.

After recent reports fans are confused, nobody know who the real HC is and how much power coaches ha e over Brady anymore.

  2. Hodad Says:

Stupid is as stupid does. Sorry Gump was on the other day, and I watched some.

  3. JeffreyLane77 Says:

I agree. Brady should have been pulled in the 3rd quarter. 49er’s went into prevent defense and started running the ball. Tampa couldn’t stop the run and couldn’t dink dunk pass into a prevent defense. It was obvious Brady probably injured his hand. It wasn’t a division game so if they lost it wouldn’t knock the team out of playoff contention. Another example of Bowles not taking charge of his own team.

  4. AbucAway Says:

I mean, yeah, it’s Bowles team and decisions need to be made for the team, not just an individual. But it would have been even more of a shat show if coaches had tried to sit Tom. In his hometown. With all the narrative surrounding the game (think about Toms five minute briefing on what it means to go back and play in San Fran. It wouldn’t have been pretty. With that said, Tom should have taken himself out. He knows when it’s time and it’s ridiculous he didn’t think past his own interests to that if the team.
With that said, Todd should have pulled him and all the other fragile bodies and given the second stringers some game time.

  5. adam from ny Says:

joe i’m starting to think my take is correct…

brady is a man on an island in tampa – after BA was moved upstairs…

    upstairs to where?…nobody knows…

    it’s BA’s guys vs brady…just everyone is wearing smiles…

they aren’t going to let brady go out in style…

they’re flopping him out with a .500 season for BA…

am i crazy or am i cray

  6. Onetrickpony Says:

I’m beginning to think Bowels is not fond of Brady one bit and may even be jealous, if that’s possible. Bowels and Leftwich both better be gone next year or after 40 + yes Im gone. This dog and pony show is ridiculous

  7. Four Tuddy Says:

Yeah because Brady is everything! I can’t wait until he leaves. Hate to say it, but “Bucs” fans are forgetting how much of a team game football is. We did not win the Super Bowl because of just Brady. No, it was the teams connection and focus. Great players, all playing together. We all forget everything Godwin does all of a sudden. We forget about everyone else, because everyone is so quick to put blame on everyone but Brady. This is getting out of hand and when he’s gone I’ll be glad. For 1 all these fake Bucs fans can scram. I have been through Josh Freeman years. This here is called being spoiled. Guy above me saying he’s leaving when Brady gone or the coaches. Whatever it is that sounds crazy. I’m tired of going to games and seeing people wearing a half patriots and Bucs jersey! That’s a no no.

  8. SufferingSince76 Says:

Four Tuddy, Brady is one of 11. The other 10 on his team are letting him down, yet you say he’s letting the other 10 down. I thought it was a team game. We’re spoiled by 2 seasons with the GOAT, a Super Bowl and NFC championship game? Damn right we’re “spoiled”. Anyone who accepts constant losing is a glutton for punishment and needs psychiatric treatment, not the label of a “real fan”.

  9. HC Grover Says:

That whole game was a Bowzo Blunder of the First Magnitude.

  10. ClwJB Says:

This is a pretty easy call for anyone with common sense

Look around the league and tell us who Todd Bowles is better than in the HC slot

    The Texans maybe?

Dan Campbell and Steve Wirfs have done wayyyyyyy more with less talent

Doug Pederson has the Jags playing their hearts out completely overmatched talent wise

    What we call crap
Teams are beating our arse week in week out

The definition of poor coaching is what we are watching every week

Bowles proved it in NY and reiterated here in Tampa- his max is DC

Don’t get me started on Left nut – is there a Jr high program needing a get back coach? Byron would be a perfect fit

  11. Oneilbuc Says:

Tuddy. It’s a lot of fake Patriots fans on this site now and agree with you bro. They call everyone a Brady hater if you do give the rest of the team credit for winning the super bowl. They call you a Brady hater if you tell the truth how Brady been playing. I can’t wait until Brady is gone and the rest of the fake Patriots fans and fake bucs fans is gone.

  12. Richard Dickson Says:

“Bowles should be questioned for this decision”

This could be said pretty much every week.

  13. JimmyfromNY Says:

Ha!! Here come the Brady trolls!! Like clockwork. Don’t worry years of being the sucs are right around the corner!!

  14. WillieG Says:

Bowles is old school so he probably hates having a star QB who he perceives as a threat to his control. Think about it. He thinks he has all the answers “this time” and he wants to do things his way but he has the GOAT on “his” team. Maybe he wants Brady off his team so he can succeed his way with a hand off specialist instead of a passer? I’m not saying he’s trying to get Brady hurt, I’m saying he just might not be as protective of him as he should be.

  15. alton green Says:

As a 60 year fan I have a theory. All the hooplah about Brady coming to Tampa put a thumbtack in Todd’s underwear. after his disaster in NY why in the Hell did the Bucs hire that Weekend at Bernie’s man? That’s a rhetorical question. If memory serves correctly, BA was praised for putting minorities in coaching positions. For you younger people, Bowles record with the Jets was 29-45!!!!! I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that BA thought the Goat could be Todd’s crutch. 29-45 DAMN let’s hire this guy before some other woke owner snatches him up, As a career Brady fan, it’s torture to watch Tom being brought down by the woke society

  16. alton green Says:

    WillyG” Brother you nailed it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  17. DmanTX Says:

Just had an epiphany: the saints destroyed the Bucs in Brady’s first season in the regular season in their second game of the year. Long shot maybe just maybe if we make it to playoffs and we win game 1, maybe we play 49ers again and we find a win. That would definitely be an amazing story if this is the goats last season. Not banking on it but very likely we still win the division. If we are in, maybe Tom can make them believe again.

  18. VATom Says:

Tell me your team doesnt think Brady is coming back on the property next yr without telling me you dont think Brady will be on your property next yr.

  19. Tucker Says:

I don’t think it’s as complicated as a conspiracy theory pretty sure it’s he is a bad coach who is over his head he has been making bad decisions all year and the team doesn’t believe in themselves or him sad to see.

  20. NEfan Says:

Bowels is a Parcells quy, same as Belichick. WilleG is 100% correct, Parcells and Belichick never believed you need a elite QB to win SB just a top 15 guy. Yes Mahomes, Allen, Burrows & Hebert are ALL elite QB’s. How is that working out for BB now that Brady is gone.

19 pressures and 7 hits? That’s crazy for any QB. Oneilsuckyall, I believe the buzz after the 2020 SB was how well the D did to stop Mahomes, not about the 31 points the O scored.

I do believe there is dissention between Brady & Bowles, that’s clear, it appears they don’t even look at each other on the sidelines.EVERY other HC during a TO discussses things with their QB, when has this happened this season. It could be the team senses this and is sick of it. I don’t see Bowles discussing anything with the team just scolding them when the screw up.

  21. beano Says:

Joe Says: “Brady should have been pulled.”

Wait a second. I said that yesterday and you accused me of “wanting the GOAT benched”. Two-faced-Joe much?

  22. Jay Says:

They were down 24-0 at halftime. the bucs have never in their history come back from a deficit that big. A good coach would have put in blane to get some reps or the new QB who has never played in a game before. Find out who is going to be the QB next year. However, if Brady had been taken out, it would have been a good thing. They could finally move on from him and maybe make the playoffs.

  23. Beej Says:

” pressured 19 times and hit seven” (not the first game this has happened) People look at the overall stats, and assume the line is fine because he only got sacked twice on 50 attempts. The bigger picture is he gets pressured on nearly one drop-back in three, and it completely throws him off his game

  24. Jeff Says:

Clueless Todd strikes again! This is worse than Greg Schiano. Schiano’s teams had no talent. Bowles team is dripping with talent.

  25. rrsrq Says:

I am no Brady hater, by no stretch of the imagination, but to say the Bucs do not have a shot without him is ludcrous. We keep seeing these QBs come in and perform decent for a game or two. who is Brock Purdy, Mike White, even Geno Smith. as Blainne Gabbert had this much “so-called” talent. I really hoped that TB12 would have went out of the game when he hurt his hand, let’s at least see what we have in Gabbert, if we know it is sad to bad, then why is he on the team. He does at least give the QB position some mobility.

  26. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Bowels and Lefwich are similar to the President’s new press spokesperson how they are given a position that they are not qualified for and its a complete mess. The Glazers are pretty smart business people and believed BA too much on his recommendation of Bowles. The guy is ABSOLUTELY not a HC. Hope the bucs cut bait and start over in 2023.

  27. NEfan Says:

I don’t think they should have taken him out at the half, he is known for his comebacks but at the end of the 3rd quarter absolutely. He’s not going to take himself out he believes if you can scire two td’s in 5 min why not 4 in 10? so that was Bowles call. I agree Bowles should have given Gabbert a chance how much worse could it get.

  28. beano Says:

“Jay Says: They were down 24-0 at halftime. A good coach would have put in Blane to get some reps or the new QB who has never played in a game before. Find out who is going to be the QB next year.”

Bingo! What I’ve been saying for months. Put in Trask with the first team and see what he can do – he’s never been given a shot with the first team. Several other 2nd, 3rd, and even 4th string quarterbacks around the NFL have stepped in and played well this year, but nooooo, not the Bucs. Too many UF-haters and white-quarterback-haters in its fan base.

  29. beano Says:

Joe and the Trask Haters are terrified of Trask playing with the first team and making them look like know-nothings.

  30. NEfan Says:

Ya beano that’s it or maybe they don’t want to be embarrassed more than they have been this season. Trask gets in and all of a sudden the #1 D in the league lays down, Bucs wr’s are now open by 10yds, the oline stuffs Boza and Co, Smith never fouls again, Lenny and White go for 100 yds each and BL is the next coming of Don Shula. Stupid is what stupid writes!

  31. ChiBuc Says:

What’s wrong guys, you don’t get enough drama in retirement watching your daily soaps? You need to fish up conspiracy theories to justify your true love of football, Tom Brady? Forget team when your dream man is in view. Have you ever considered that the TEAM is quitting on Tom? That they’re sick of the circus he brought this year, how he easily bails on them, and his mopey depressed leadership? You think ME13 is a quitter, or he’s tired of Tommy? I know, out of your box…zztzx…cannot compute…zctxzz…malfunction…. Tommy love challenged….footballllll…brady…bwzzxtxzx

It’s right before your eye… an old goat being ridden by a couple of jacka$$es.

  32. Crickett Baker Says:

This site has gotten too depressing, for me. The same things are being said over and over. I was mostly concerned about what Joe said Sherman said. What exactly does that mean? And if true, it should be an easy fix.

  33. ChrisBuc23 Says:

Crazy thing is you dont have to be a coach to notice all of this I mean all of us fans notice it. Todd Bowles is really lost out there smh
