Depressing Stats

#Fail

Man, this makes Joe want to guzzle Bromosas until he passes out.

Joe really thought the Bucs would be one of the better teams this season, returning the bulk of a team that won 29 games the past two seasons.

But man, oh man, has the offense sure missed Bucco Bruce Arians’ red pen. What follows shows both how good of a coach Arians was and what a pathetic, irresponsible, unacceptable job failing Bucs offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich has done.

The Bucs have the No. 5 passing offense. That’s good. They should have a good passing offense with Tom Brady, Mike Evans, Chris Godwin and Julio Jones.

But after that, this offense is a trainwreck.

The Bucs are dead last in the NFL in rushing offense. There is simply no excuse. Also, the Bucs are 28th in the NFL in scoring. Can you imagine being unable to score with Tom Brady?

It’s not just the offense. And Joe would have to research it but when is the last time a Todd Bowles-coached defense ranked 20th in run defense?

Leftwich has been exposed as a fraud, he’s just calling plays off a sheet hoping it will work. He doesn’t know how to use the personnel he has, sequence plays, for example calling runs on first downs the majority of the time and he doesn’t know how to attack the weaknesses of defenses. BA in my opinion is partly responsible for this embarrassment of a season.

  2. PSL Bob Says:

I have nothing to back it up, but I actually think the Bucs will win this week.

  3. Sal Says:

Bucs are getting embarrassed again 2 weeks in a row pathetic #!!

  4. Tony1775 Says:

This team is a dumpster 🔥. What a waste of a year.

  5. Rayjay1122 Says:

Dear Glazers, I will be your OC for half of whatever the lowest paid OC in the league is making and I guarantee you that the results will not be any worse. Yes, like BL, I would be getting paid for absolutely nothing, but at a cheaper price. Let me know…..

    Sincerely,

The guy holding the sign asking for beer money in front of Walmart

  6. Craig Says:

Don’t need stats to be depressed about this team. I’ve seen it with my own eyes.

I do need Arians to put on a Santa Claus suit and fly on down to rescue us from this mess; a total dumpster fire.

  7. SB~LV Says:

    WHY ?

  8. Tom in Mad City Says:

The game in San Francisco really showed how creativity and imagination are important in the modern era of professional football. When the Bucs had the ball, I could often accurately predict what the play was about to be based on formation and down and distance. And I am not a football genius. I’ve just watched the Bucs enough. If I can do that from my couch with no film study, what do you think opposing defenses and their coordinators know based on their extensive preparation.

Contrast that with the 49ers. Their personnel lined up in many different formations and used shifts and motion effectively so you didn’t know what was coming. Kettle lined up in the backfield and staying in to block with Run CMC split out wide left is just one example.

Great coaches and coordinators know how to move their personnel around to keep opposing defenses guessing. Unfortunately, the Bucs lack an offense coordinator without the ability or willingness to do so and a head coach who is too stubborn to get involved in the offense and demand better. If either Todd Bowles or Byron Leftwich are in their current roles in 2023, it will be the beginning of a dry spell.

  9. Tbbucs3 Says:

6th in pass defense….9th in points allowed….let’s not blame the defense unitll the offense can start scoring more than 7 points

  10. Jack Sparrow Says:

If it wasn’t a run in the middle,,, it will be a screen pass to Godwin with no blockers,,,,, oh boy,,, what a genius concept !!!

  11. Marine Buc Says:

I just keep checking the headlines – waiting for the one that says “B. Leftwich Has Been Fired”

    Any day now…

Todd Bowles will need a scapegoat in order to save his own hide.

  12. Tbbucs3 Says:

“when is the last time a Todd Bowles-coached defense was No. 20 in the NFL?”

Joe, that stat is for rush defense not total defense….misleading, the Bucs are 9th in points allowed which is what matters

  13. NEfan Says:

Here come the injury excuses. Yet Bucs were manhandled by a 3rd string QB. We know one thing, ALL the Bengals stats will improve after Sunday.

  14. NEfan Says:

I agree, get rid of Brady so the stats will be more balanced, put Gabbert or Trask in so the # 5 passing stat can drop to 28th.

  15. TDavis Says:

We have to remember who designed the offense Leftwich is calling and who trained Leftwich with that offense. The Arians offense requires absolutely elite OL and QB play or its just too predictable and easy to defend.

  16. Goatfarmer Says:

Some days you be. Most days you be don’t.

  17. Kenny Says:

Leftwich sucks!!!! period, let BRADY call the plays.

  18. TDavis Says:

Oh and elite WR play too.

  19. Bucfan Says:

How much of Bowles defense success was due to Suh? He was a ‘coach’ on the field!

Totally agree with your post. BA forced Lefttwich and Bowles on the Bucs franchise and it has been an utter disaster.

  21. Casual Observer Says:

The Bucs don’t seem to block or tackle very crisply or very well. Otherwise, not too bad.

  22. Arn platz Says:

There’s your justification for coaching job termination

  23. RustyRhinos Says:

Leftwich is the same guy he always has been in the NFL, I remember his time under center here in Tampa. He sucked then too. Joe acts like he is a different guy, no he still has no clue, under center or as OC. His record(s) speaks for themselves. Yeah, he got us to a Super Bowl and won it. Now, what has changed since then? Is it still “No Risk It No Biscuit” or something else? I would rather see a game plan created by our two Toms and Clyde for the rest of the season. We have seen enough of Leftwich.

  24. DEEEMO Says:

Can’t believe Leftwich is still the OC!!!! What is going on at One Buc?????

  25. Hammerhead Says:

What is Arians being paid a boatload of money to do anyways. His silence is deafening.

  26. Your Mom Says:

The 5th ranked passing offense is inflated because the rushing is so bad.

How effective is the passing offense when they are averaging fewer points than Josh “Butters” McCown, Mike Glennon or Trent Dilfer…

  27. Jmarkbuc Says:

Leftfoot was horrendous at AZ. So no one should be surprised.

    #FIREBYRON

  28. Tbbucs3 Says:

The passing offense (or lack thereof) is also inflated because the Bucs have the most pass attempts of any team by a mile….so the amount of passing yards is irrelevant

  29. NEfan Says:

Your Momwsgrate@ it means it gets you in the red zone where things tighten up and with NO rushing attack coverage is so much easier. No run game means you’re always in second & long and again passing is necessary and easy to defend causing 3 & outs. Uou would know that if you ever played the game at a higher level. Pin this on Brady all you want, the facts are leading NFC in passing, tied with Mahomes in completion % better than Allen, Cousins, Goff, Carr or 95% better than all Qb’s, with the worst rushing attack and oline in the league and wr’s that can’t get open. I will write it until it sinks in.

  30. sasquatch Says:

I just can’t wait for this to be over. It is so awful that a playoff spot, rather than being a reason for optimism, is just a reason for dread… dragging out the inevitable. We know Lefty needs to go. The morning after the last game I expect the announcement. It can’t come soon enough.

  31. Defense Rules Says:

NEfan … ‘Bucs were manhandled by a 3rd string QB.’

Bucs were manhandled by a better TEAM that happened to be using their 3rd string QB as a game manager against an out-classed Bucs team (I’m using that word loosely).

Purdy was 16-for-21 (76%) for 185 yards on the day (very good for a 1st start IMO). Only 2 of those passes were deep, yet they were BOTH completed (to very open receivers) for 57 yards total and BOTH were TDs. That’s more of an indictment of our Secondary than anything else. All the rest of his passes were short & relatively easy catches it looked like to me. We had no pass rush & our coverage was terrible IOW.

And look who he had to work with. McCaffrey gained over 150 yards on the day (119 yards rushing in only 14 carries plus another 34 yards receiving). Mason gained another 56 yards rushing in 11 tries, and Samuel added another 64 yards on 4 carries & 4 receptions. Bucs defense (particularly our DLine) was simply outclassed, especially without Vea, Shaq, Winfield, Edwards, SMB. Not excuses, but their replacements aren’t starter quality. Same exact problem (lack of DEPTH) has plagued our offense all season.

  32. SOEbuc Says:

I have come to believe that because BL hasn’t been jettisoned yet is because the entire coaching staff is gone unless they can get to the playoffs, and not get totally smashed round one. There are plenty of offensive position coaches like Clyde Cristensen that could have the ability to change the offensive scheme for the better.

  33. NEfan Says:

Ttsucs, thank you even more evidence for Brady, he passes more and many are short or intermediate so the stats I listed above are even stronger against ALL the other QB’s in the league. Speaking of stats the D is 9th in points allowed, other than KC, Dallas, Bucs have played some of the worst offenses in the league. 9ers are a good O but with a 3rd string QB??? I guess the verdict is out on that one.

  34. Since76 Says:

Arians failed to teach Leftwich how to game plan. Its as simple as that. Leftwich is lost because arians couldn’t teach him. Did Ariana know he wasn’t ready and endorse him anyways to the owners. Or does Leftwich think this current way is better.

  35. NEfan Says:

    Since76, affirmative!!!

  36. SPARKY Says:

Our QB has only thrown 5 interceptions. Yet we are -2 in turnovers. That’s almost impossible. Our last interception was on a hail Mary at the half about 5 weeks ago. We suck all around.

  37. sasquatch Says:

    @Since76,
I doubt it’s a matter of Arians not teaching him. If you’ve listened to Leftwich speak, it’s clear he’s dumber than a bag of hammers. Don’t put that on Arians — he put faith in him and Leftwich didn’t deliver… because he’s a moron.

  38. Capece is Kaput Says:

I love analyzing stats and I stopped looking at the Buc’s offense numbers after week 4.
I know the answers. It is awful. And that pass number is awful. Passing offenses that struggle to average at least 10 yards per completion and 7 yards per attempt are not efficient. Having to throw the ball 50 times to get your 265 yards is not a good thing. Some people say it compensates for the bad run game. No…No it doesn’t. In situational football it can. As a 100% game plan that anyone can see coming…which is our situation. It doesn’t.

  39. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

TDavis hit the nail on the head when he said that the Arians Offense demands both an Elite O Line and Elite QB Play.
Because we are not getting either, the offense has been reduced to a poorly conceived short passing offense.
How many screens have we seen to Chris Godwin with no blockers ?
Mike Evans is starting to give up on routes because he knows Brady will not have enough time to find him.

This team is not built for the dink and dunk offense we are currently running, and it shows.

Our Team is like an 800 horsepower racecar, running on street tires.
Yes, we have tons of firepower, if Brady had the time to find them.

I blame Licht for this. He should have spent much of the money he did on O Linemen instead of Gage, Rudolph, etc, etc.

  40. Sbucs Says:

    Jason ‘no team depth’. Licht

  41. NEfan Says:

Chris, how was the line at the end of 2021?

  42. NEfan Says:

Capease, another wannabe, Mahomes 7.1 yds Brady 6.4, Allen 6.8. Hebert, 6.1 Cousins 5.9 the highest is Tua with like 11 and Hurst 9.1. What’s your point again? The ONLY difference is they have a rushing game, better olines and wr’s that get better separation and score more points. I would throw in better OC’s. NEXT!!!

  43. ACG2x Says:

Remember when all the rumors came out last year that Tom retired partially because he and Leftwich would create a game plan and then BA would come in and change large parts of it? Is there anyone wishing he wouldn’t do that exact thing this season?

No creativity. No misdirection. Not even a gadget play here and there. The Bucs offense is as vanilla as it gets. It gets so old watching Lenny hit the pile and fall forward for 2 yards on the first play of every drive we have. I think we are realizing that BA hid a lot of Lefty’s deficiencies and Bowles simply isn’t an NFL HC. Some guys are better number 2’s. Leslie Frazier, Dom Capers, Wade Phillips, etc. Bowles goes in this category. Superb DC, but not good enough to run the whole show.

  44. Redeemer Says:

The offense they run is antiquated and predictable. They won the last two years by superior talent. Someone was always open. BL is calling plays like they still have Gronk, AB and a 100% Godwin. When you can’t run at all, it makes everything harder

  45. Allbuccedup Says:

One thing for sure Lefty is not going to be in demand for a head coaching gig in the near future.

  46. HC Grover Says:

5th Passing and Last rushing. Obviously Bowzo will want to run more. Bet the Ranch.

  47. Defense Rules Says:

Allbuccedup … Does that mean that we get to keep BL without fear of some other team stealing him away?

  48. sasquatch Says:

If this guy isn’t fired in the weee hours of the morning following the last game, I might have a heart attack. I’m so pissed about the job Leftwich has done that I wish I could be the one doing the firing.

  49. ClwJB Says:

Total implosion is less than a half season – it’s getting uglier by the week

    Embarrassing display by all involved

  50. ChrisBuc23 Says:

What a trash coordinator this offense has been pathetic to watch this year and there’s no valid excuse for us to be this crappy after seeing what we did the last couple of years before and I get the injuries but no adjustments no creativity no fire no nothing and just flat out looks lost out there smh

  51. adam from ny Says:

please understand when lefto smirks and talks down to the media or one word answers them – these are defensive responses developing for inadequate areas within his psyche…they are defensive responses because he feels inadequate while giving podium…he’s in a difficult spot and doesn’t know how to fix it…so go easy on him because the season is almost a wrap

  52. Oneilbuc Says:

NEfa is Skip Bayless Brady can do no wrong regardless how bad he plays 😂 !!
