Status Woe

“Jason, I believe in Russell Gage.”

Joe already detailed that in likely the final year of having the greatest quarterback who ever walked the face of the earth, the Bucs are on pace to have a top-10 draft pick in the April 2023 draft.

That is almost unthinkable. With a roster full of good players alongside a healthy Brady, it almost seems like a team has to try to lose in order to have a top-10 pick.

On Tuesday, the NFL trade deadline came and went. The Bucs decided, with a 3-5 record and the season about to teeter out of control, they are good with their hand.

Ken Patra of NFL.com was shocked the Bucs didn’t get someone to fortify one of the worst rushing attacks in NFL history or to shore up the defense, especially after Bucs sacks king Shaq Barrett was lost with a blown Achilles.

When a 45-year-old Tom Brady is under center, by default, you’re all-in. But GM Jason Licht stayed silent at the deadline despite a roster littered with holes. The offensive interior continues to struggle, but there were likely no trade upgrades to be seen. The Bucs could have chased a pass rusher to help smooth over the loss of Shaq Barrett. Even after overtly struggling this season, Tampa could still win the moribund NFC South as currently constructed. However, after making zero upgrades at the deadline, they’re counting on Brady recapturing his magic for any sort of postseason run to materialize.

Well, it’s not like Brady is playing terrible football. He is second in the NFL in passing and has thrown just one pick through eight games. At 45!

Back in the depths of the Lost Decade when the Bucs trotted out the likes of Mike Glennon and Steward McClown, Bucs fans would have sliced off a gonad to have a top-five quarterback. So let’s not pin this recent malaise on Brady.

Joe explained on yesterday’s edition of the “Ira Kaufman Podcast” what likely are the Bucs’ goals with a 3-5 team.

It seems the Bucs concluded getting Julio Jones, Logan Ryan, Russell Gage and Akiem Hicks (who?) healthy for a run at the division title will equate to nine wins and wrapping up the awful NFC South. That gives the Bucs a home playoff game, where all bets are off with Tom Brady and a bunch of talented players.

Nobody would be shocked if Brady made a run in the playoffs.

Joe is not one to bet against Brady, even though the look and demeanor and feel of this team don’t fit that a winner.

Actually, I’d be shocked if the Bucs made a run in the playoffs Joe. Only way I see that happening is if our depth gets deeper, our very expensive super-stars finally start playing like, oh ya, super-stars and our coaches start, oh ya, coaching. Not holding my breath.

  2. Hodad Says:

The Bucs IF they make the playoffs won’t be making a run, more like they will be run out of the playoffs.

  3. SufferingSince76 Says:

They’re relying on players who can’t stay healthy to get healthy in time to make a playoff run? Sheer lunacy.

  4. BucsFanSince1976 Says:

Jason licht has FAILED MISERABLY by not signing SUH and TRETTER. Bucs are not improving until roster improves.

They all stay one year too many.

  7. BuddhaBuc Says:

I’m going to be shocked if we win another game this year. The only good that can come from that is that Bowles and Leftwich will be gone. The worst case is if we win a few more but barely miss the playoffs and the coaches stay. Bottom line is we need new coaches.

  8. ChiBuc Says:

I’m guessing the team didn’t want to throw any more good money at bad coaching. Put a rose in a vase full of crap, it all stinks of crap

  9. Arn platz Says:

surprised no moves made to fill the holes. Bucs need help

Gotta say I AM encouraged by how good Leverage(?) looks in place of Gedeke(?). Absolute huge improvement

    It’s better than the alternative!

I just don’t know how you can “write off” Tom Brady. I’ve said it before. This team is too talented to be 3-5. My expectations remain playoff bound.

Need to beat the Rams sunday to turn this thing around. If this team can’t get up for the Rams we are done.

I feel like I’m waiting for a Hollywood style comeback of epic proportions. We are halfway through the movie, and it’s time for the heroes of this horror movie (the Bucs) to pick themselves up off the curb, wipe away the arse whippings off their brow, look in the mirror and say, “no more”. And then commence the golden run remembered for generations.

Yeah, I like that script. Write it in, Bowles.

  15. John Sinclear Says:

One game out. Buccaneers Cove is visible from the crow’s nest. Lose to the Rams and the helmsman can see it from the bridge.

  16. Captain Oblivious Says:

I think the comments on this site about the Bucs demise this season are all correct to varying degrees. For example; Poor blocking up front, no run game, no pass rush, but mostly incompetent coaching.

I’m still waiting for Brady and the offense to tell Leftwich to sit down and shut up while they run the show. It looked like that is what happened the second half of the 2020 season. Brady seems like an obedient company man but at some point he is going to boil over. Hopefully he is getting used to the idea of being divorced and maybe has gone out on a few dates.

  17. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Licht is a dunderbox of a GM…hope he wasnt behind Goedtke having to play to start the season.

  18. Bucamania Says:

Licht and the Bucs are clearly ALL-OUT for 2022.

  19. captivajim Says:

bowles,BA, & Licht are just too stubborn to admit mistakes going back to last spring when we lost Marpet & Cappa—who were not replaced with proven players.. They compounded the mistakes when they made the same decision to replane Jensen with a Rookie ….

Maybe when ticket sales fall off enough,, the Glazers will clean house—starting with Licht

  20. unbelievable Says:

Been telling y’all since the first month of the season – this team simply isn’t all-in this season. Not the players, not the coaches, and not the front office.

The lack of a move is just the latest item that illustrates that.

One and done, if they even make the playoffs. Our defense officially has zero pass rushers now. Chit is about to get even uglier.

  21. beano Says:

Our defense is allowing 18.9 points per game. Our offense is scoring 18.3 points per game. The offense sucks. And Brady is the biggest part of the offense.

  22. SlyPirate Says:

YOU SAID IT YOURSELF … “The locker room went south in a hurry.”

The coaching staff is inept. The players know it and they’re done with the BS. Licht needed to make a change and he missed his window.

  23. Beej Says:

Apparently Aaron Rodgers’ skills ALSO fell off a cliff this year

  24. Hunter's Crack Pipe Says:

For the price of Jones and Hicks, we could have had Suh and Tretter. Probably with money left over. Think about that. Signed two obvious gambles instead of two consistent solid contributors.

I might have to bring back my Lichtweight moniker.

  26. My Momma Says:

My Momma say’s they didn’t want to waste any draft capital because they see it’s not going to do any good. Momma wanted Licht Beer to make a move during training camp, but now it’s way too late.

I’m not scared to say…If the Bucs can come off the mini-bye and beat the Rams convincingly we can go into the bye week at .500, cause the momentum should help us in Germany. THEN we get even healthier on the bye week and make a run and finish the season 11-6. Get Jensen back, Logan Ryan back and we make the playoff run. Only team that concerns me is the Eagles right now. No other NFC team scares a fully loaded and healthy Bucs team.
