Shaun King: Tom Brady Is “Deteriorating”

Tom Brady threw 43 touchdown passes last season and has just 12 this year, so to say he’s “deteriorating” seems ridiculously obvious.

But this take runs deeper.

Former Bucs quarterback Shaun King (1999-2003), one of four men to lead the Bucs to the NFC Championship game, says Brady is “deteriorating” thanks to Father Time, so he explained this week on CBS Sports Radio.

King is a lifelong Bucs fan and is not one of those annoying analysts who doesn’t pay attention.

King was asked if Brady’s struggles are tied to “old age.”

“I think it is,” King replied. “You know the thing about Father Time, he don’t really give you like a two-week notice. … Father Time just shows up and, you know, you go to make a cut you used to make and you can’t make it; you got to throw a pass that you used to make and now, its ahhhh. … [Brady and Matt Ryan] are trying to adjust on the fly as they’re deteriorating because of age.”

No, there was no Brady bashing going on. King expressed his admiration of The Goat and even said the success ratio in New England for the Brady-Bill Belicheat dynasty was 65 percent thanks to Brady.

Simply put, King said, Brady “got old. It happens.”

Joe can’t yet agree with King’s assessment. Through Joe’s eyes, Brady looks darn good, certainly not bad enough to be the primary reason why the Bucs offense has gone from great last year to having just one more touchdown this year than Lovie Smith’s Texans.

    It’s one of the many factors sinking this season. More of the blame should be on the coaching. Bowles has picked up as HC right where he left off with the Jets. That’s not a good thing. If he can’t run the table against our division foes, and win the division he needs to be fired.

    Has Brady declined to the point of being a liability to the offense? I don’t believe he has. See: Rams game a few weeks ago. If he has deteriorated as King implies, it’s very subtle from my standpoint.

    Bradys deterioration is obvious only because of aging. He still not why the team is struggling. His deterioration is still a lot better than Trask or Gabbert combined.

    As much as I hate to agree Shaun is right. Brady skill set is deteriorating. it is pretty obvious if you watch the game he has brilliant throws and some miscues.
    I still take him over 25 other qbs in this league but you are blind if you cannot see it. Now…………His skill set is still good enough for us to win, but not good enough to overcome poor coaching and team miscues……..With that being said our best chance to win in 2022 and 2023 is with brady and I will take him over 75% of the starting qbs out there…………but he has had some head scratching throws this season that are very un characteristic.

    This team would be better off with a mobile quarterback moving forward. Watch how Mahomes and Josh Allen play, Brady is getting much easier to defend as a statue in the pocket as he ages

    I think what’s most likely is those shoulder and finger injuries are lingering. Age is definitely a factor in injury recovery rate.

    Ofc he will be deteriorating little by little with age. He used to be the best in the league by far, now he is just one of the best qbs in the league. Still, the offense being this bad is not his fault, the thing is that he is not able to cover for a bad offense anymore, he needs the whole package to keep a great offense.

    i think brady goes back to join the pats next year…

    i’m pretty sure after this year in tampa for tom, and the past few years in new england for belichik, the 2 parties have a new appreciation for each other…

    and a one year swan song with the pats is fitting…

    starting a whole new thing in a whole new place is a big challenge…

    especially if he also wants to start a whole new thing with a whole new woman…

    too much newness at once for an old goat…

    back to the pats he goes for a proper exit before he totally deteriorates…

    this year we are at least getting 88% to 92% of him…yes a slight deterioration has happened…

    most of the issues are surrounding him and not him tho…imho

    Maybe, but watching highlights from last year, his protection was much better, the running game was much better, and most importantly, the play calling was much better. There may be a bit of deterioration on the margins for Brady, but nothing that explains the huge drop off in productivity and efficiency of this offense. Cowardly, stupid play calling is far and away the primary cause…

    Just look at all the throws to Mike Evans and i’m pretty sure you’ll find at least 2 poor throws, maybe up to 4.

    I disagree with King’s assessment. Brady could have thrown another 43 TD’s this season just as he did last year. What changed is the O-line, not Brady!

    Being distracted due to going through a divorce, which isn’t easy for anyone, may have been a factor as well, but there’s no evidence of any significant physical deterioration. But losing Marpet and Jensen and the continuity on the O-line they had is the biggest factor as to why Brady has 12 TD’s so far.

    You can look at “only two interceptions” or passing yardage or completion percent…..it’s third down and red zone failures that have doomed the Bucs….

    Tom looks hurried….uncomfortable and has missed crucial throws that he usually doesn’t miss.

    And…..our receivers aren’t getting open quick enough for him……looks like he’s going to his first read….and that’s Rachaad White for 5 yards.

    I think his hand is hurt and has been since the beginning of the season. His pride won’t let him sit out or miss time. I think his shoulder took a bad hit several games back making it worse. So he’s possibly his 2 injuries which severely affects his throwing ability and his accuracy. No one just deteriorates this quickly and his passing proficiency has been cut by 50% or more. This isn’t mental or from distractions. He just misses passes by margins he’s never done in his career. He was shaking his hand on the field again last week. It’s a physical ailment IMO. I believe if we would have started Trask by the 5’th game they would easily have 7-8 wins by now. TB12 has cost this team 3 or 4 wins

    For one , he has 14 tds and not 12. My take is that no, he hasnt been slowed down due to old age. I highly doubt someone would drop that much in one season. Its multiple factors like a worse oline, terrible coaching, and the man just lost his wife/mother of his children due to divorce. Thats def going to mess with you mentally. You can also see he has been pretty drained due to his personal life. He lost weight and missed 11 days of training camp. Rest assured when he feels 100% mentally like himself again and jensen comes back next year, licht picks up a grade a left guard were good. Last but not least demote bowles and fire leftwich. Plenty better head coach material out there, cough cough (payton).

    He is making amazing throws to covered receivers. He isn’t throwing to anyone that can get open quickly, thats his game.

    Bowles and Leftwich don’t know how to work with a quarterback like Brady. He gets the ball out quickly so that means his receivers have to get open quickly. Godwin seems like the only one who does. Not having Gage healthy is a huge issue because he was supposed to be the #3 that could get open faster than Evans or Godwin. Not happening due to his health. Jones is a great vertical threat but not a get open fast guy. And Brate, please get him off the field, he is never open any more.

    Bowles and Leftwich don’t know how to call plays for the GOAT. He should be running hurryup all game. Coaching has slowed down a quick strike offense.

    On a positive note the Bucs have the most diverse coaching staff in the league which I applaud BA for his innovative thinking but unfortunately by putting the wrong individuals in place he may have set his initiative back 10 years. Thanks Again BA alias the invisible man.

    Congrats Redeemer on looking past the surface of this whole situation. First 3 sentences were spot on … Facts are facts. Have to disagree about Bowles being a ‘moron’ as a HC though. The way that the powers that be set this hierarchy up, Bucs don’t really have a HC at all IMO. Dual-hatting a coordinator to also be the HC rarely works (look at the job Dennis Allen is doing in New Orleans).

    And I’m not sure whether anyone can say Tom Brady is ‘deteriorating’ but his immobility is definitely hurting him right now. Watch him in the pocket. He used to move very instinctively within the pocket, and his OLinemen knew how to shift the pocket to protect him.

    I’m not seeing that at all right now, and that’s one of the key reasons I believe that he’s throwing so many ‘dump-offs’ to his RBs. Fournette (50 targets) & White (34) together have been targeted as much Evans (85) & Godwin (86). That wasn’t the case last year or in 2020 (probably because Brady also had Gronk & AB to throw to).

    I watch some of these younger QBs slide around or shift to one side or the other, to avoid sacks. They make it look effortless. I think to myself, “Brady can no longer do that”. Either a play is timed to perfection or he throws it away or in the dirt. We have too many wasted plays. Brady is still and will probably always be the GOAT, but his (T)ime is up.

    The swagger is totally gone from the Bucs. IMHO that loss of swagger may be the biggest loss of all in BA’s retirement!

    Pull the freaking plug and risk the hell out of it. What has been tried is not working. Going deep has worked before and it can work again but Bowles has to be restrained and BA given total control of the offense.

    Defense, I have noticed Brady having trouble resetting. Of course his footwork isn’t as good as it once was. But it’s still good enough IMO.     I’ve said this many times defense, Brady can’t carry a team by himself anymore. Those days are long gone. He needs a competent running game, which would allow for more play action. They’re putting too much on him. Under the circumstances, I’d say he’s preformed admirably.

    Bucs had 61 TDs last year (3.6 per game). Of those, Evans had 14, Fournette had 10 and Gronk had 6 for a total of 30 (almost half). So far this year (through almost 2/3 of our games), we have 18 TDs (1.6 per game). Of those, Evans has 3 TDs, Fournette has 6 TDs and Gronk’s replacements (Otton, Kieft, Brate & Rudolph) TOGETHER have only 2 TDs.

    IOW Evans is WAY BEHIND his 2021 production, Fournette is actually pretty much on-track for the same production, and our TE production has albeit vanished.

    Is it them or is it the OLine or is it BL (the same OC we’ve had for 4 years now whose bag of tricks remains pretty much unchanged it looks like to me)?

It was 4th-and-2 and they were going for it, then Brady got a 5-yard delay-of-game penalty, making it 4th-and-7 from Cleveland’s 42 yard line. I believe that’s where the Bucs punted from. But that’s just according to the official stats, so they could be wrong.

    The BIG PLAY on that series (besides the 5-yard delay-of-game penalty on 4th down) was Donovan Smith’s 5-yard false start penalty on 3rd-and-6 (made it 3rd-and-11). Bucs picked up 9 yards on that 3rd down which would’ve made it 1st down if not for Smith’s penalty.

Brady led TEAMS to Super Bowls and won a great number because on will, determination and clutch play. Those TEAMS were not generally super talented, only the 2007 was. The players were intelligent and coachable… and here’s the KEY… They were coached by a man who would do anything to win. Not a man who was afraid to do anything that would win. Brady is 90+% the same guy who threw for 500+ yards in the 20017 Super Bowl. The Bucs are a top 5 when running no huddle, but when the head coach wants a passing team to run up the guards a$$ all day long you won’t see results. Mike Evans is a good go get it receiver but he doesn’t have super high football intelligence. He is several levels below AB and a mile below Edelman Gronk and Amendola. Godwin may get there… he has the potential. The bad block win rate, the worst rushing attack in the history of the NFL (post merger) would do in LITERALLY ANY QB YOU HAVE EVER KNOWN OR LOVED.

    But above all… the coaches are actively undermining the will, emotions, and particular skills of these players and it shows. They will lose to the 49ers by at least 21 points because Bowels and Leftwurst will still be trying to ground and pound when they are down by 14 all game. Biggest d!psh!t coaches I can ever remember following in the NFL.

    I an 100% certain that if TB12 plays next year (elsewhere obviously), everyone will be shocked and amazed that he is back from the dead. Just like after 2019. Then he didn’t have any weapons besides and injured Edelman. He can still compete with any other QB in the league with a competent coaching staff who values winning more than they fear losing

    As for physical deterioration, sure. He’s 45, he’s probably partially injured as usual, but still making championship caliber throws. It was just a few weeks ago that the noise was about how he was NOT washed, and how good he still plays.

    2022 Tom Brady can easily take a GOOD team to a Super Bowl. If this team is well coached. If the playbook is creative. If he has a system geared specifically to him. If his teammates are all-in. But Bucs are not a good team, they are not well coached, and the teammates are ambivalent at best.

Brady, Gronk and Edelman built on it further with tags on the end of plays, dictated by leverage. They tortured defenses, because as long as they executed, it was impossible to defend. They loved the hook route in particular. They’d often run mirror routes, that made it all look the same at the beginning of the play. The Patriots ran 4 basic passing concepts, with formation variation, and sub packages. I could go on for hours.

    I know Joe blames Leftwhich a lot but I think he is a passenger on Brady’s offense. Arian’s offense is long gone. Quite honestly if he is not going to be the head coach he should be a paid consultant from his lake house. Having him in the building to run interference for his guys who are struggling is not helpful.

    The problem is losing three starters on the O line from last year. Brady doesn’t trust the new line and is dumping the ball off short constantly. He does not wait for things to develop down the field because he may not have the time. Here is where we would benefit from a more modern, mobile quarterback.

    He has missed throws and receivers have dropped balls. Evans, Godwin, Jones, Fournette, Brady are not getting younger and are on the back sides of their careers. The problem is much of the team is on the back sides of their careers.

    Joe loves to predict Brady’s return next year. I don’t see it happening chief. This team will not be better next year than it is this year. Jensen will be back but everyone else will be a year older. Coaching isn’t going to improve. This has to be leaving an ugly taste in Brady’s mouth. If they get into the playoffs do you really see them getting anywhere they way they are playing?

    Next year we will not have Brady but will still have a coach that sucks, no quarterback (I am not forgetting Trask), and be in salary cap hell with an old team that just got a year older.

    It will be time to blow it up. Fire the coach and trade the older players like Evans that have value but will age out in 3 years for draft picks to restock the roster with inexpensive youth. If we do it right and find a quarterback we should be back in the playoffs in 3 years.

    I feel Brady is still playing at a high enough level to compete in the NFL. I do think there have been games where he was “off”. Whether Brady was the issue or the Oline was is what we were all discussing early on in the season. Its become clearer as the season has progressed. The offensive game planning has been atrocious this season. Can’t seem to scheme anybody open. It seems the offensive coordinators overall strategy is telling the players beat your man. Instead of exploiting a defenses weakness. We call plays the defense is prepared for and expect our players to overcome an insurmountable situation. That’s why we always seem to be playing at a disadvantage. The coaches are calling run up the middle on first down even though the opposing defense is looking for it. These coaches are putting our players in nearly impossible situations. That’s why we can’t sustain drives.

Yes, Brady has missed him a few times, but it’s not like he’s running free all game. I never thought Brady truly trusted Evans. At least not like he trusts Godwin.     Agreed with you that ME13 is not finishing routes.

    I also think that it is short sighted to say that he’s doing that on every play.

    ME13 made two amazing catches that didn’t count because the defender pushed him out of bounds before he could get two feet down.

    On 3rd and 8 with 3:40 to go in the 3rd quarter from the 13 yard line, ME13’s man left him wide open on the fade up the seam and jumped Godwin on the out. Unfortunately TB12 didn’t throw the fade to ME13. TB12 threw the out to Godwin who only gained 2 yards as ME13’s defender tackled him easily.

    The No Risk It No Biscuit offense that TB12 ran for the past two years no longer exists.

He missed/didnt throw to Gronk in the end zone for the 2 pt conversion in the 2015 championship game. Did that mean he was declining then? He’s in a hurry to get rid of it most of the time for the stated reasons and because he isn’t sure ME will actually be where he is supposed to be (except deep sideline balls which have relatively little risk). Again… none of this matters if the coaching is in place. The OL issues can be resolved with creative play calling. But the coaches are afraid so the team is afraid… Sounds like you literally want TB12 to pick everyone up and carry them . He’s just a dude. 90% Brady is still as good as Mahomes and better than everyone else. Period. I don’t debate absolutes.

    Horrible/unimaginative offensive play calling.
    Offensive line is horrible and Licht didn’t fix it.
    TB12 makes safe throws and doesn’t risk it anymore.
    TB12 is unwilling to hang in the pocket and take a hit anymore in order to make a play.
    Injuries.
    Licht’s draft picks like Hall and JTS have not worked out.
    No explosive/dynamic receiver.
    Gronk is gone and Licht failed to replace him with a good TE for TB12.
    Our front 4 is horrible.
    Vea is great, but only half of the time.
    No leadership.
    JPP, Suh and Gronk’s leadership have not been replaced which is another Licht failure.
    TB12 was greatly distracted for much of the preseason and season with marital issues, causing him not to be all in. Anyone who tells you that TB12 was not affected by the loss of his marriage and everyday family structure is not dealing in reality. Divorce is mentally draining on your emotional well being.

    I am a kid from Belle Glade who played all the way from Pop Warner to playing in college on a full ride scholarship. I now coach it to pass on the gift of ball to the next generation that the game gave me. Paying it forward.

    TB12 needs an amazing line at his age.

    Patrick Mahomes would play much better for the Bucs behind this atrocious line than what TB12 is currently playing.

    Mahomes is mobile. TB12 is not.

    The Chiefs offensive line was decimated with injuries in the Super Bowl and Mahomes played a game that showed how great he is, how much heart he has and how talented he is. Mahomes ran for his life and hit his WR’s on once in a lifetime throws only to have them dropped instead of caught for TD’s thankfully for my Bucs.

    TB12 would have played much worse than what Mahomes did if he was the QB behind that Chiefs OLINE in that Super Bowl.

    With Marpet’s retirement and then Jensen’s injury I pleaded on this site for Licht to go and get replacements. I said TB12 can’t win without a great line. He’s to old I said to play with a bad line. He’ll play scarred I said to play
    with a bad line. I said that they won’t be able to run with a bad line, and an old/immobile QB whose Offense can’t run is a recipe for disaster. I said Julio would be a waste because he would miss many games. OLine is what the Bucs and TB12 needed. Unfortunately Licht did not address it.

    The Bucs horrible OLINE is a big reason for TB12’s decline this year.

    I think the conversation about mobile QBs is moot. TB12 isn’t mobile and that’s that. Its never been a problem in getting to 10 Super Bowls and winning 7. His strength is in timing and precision… which this team does not currently have either of. I agree that the Line is a significant part of that. I genuinely believe that it is mostly on the coaches. Its OK that they have a terrible rushing attack… if they were a pass focused team that only runs occasionally (as proven by their ranking when running no huddle). But they beat a dead horse with predictable, poorly designed play calling. Some well placed and unexpected runs with some more Andy Reid-like play calling and the run game doesn’t bog the team down. Creative coaches can mask OL issues, especially against lesser opponents. The Bucs have only lost to 1 team that should be equal or better, the Chiefs. Otherwise there is no reason for more than a couple of losses… because football. So yes I agree. But also, TB12 being 45 has not that much to do with it. He was never going to take a hit in the last 10 years.

    You look at the film and tell me Evans was going full speed. I think he was trying to get the defensive back to run in to him for an interference call because he knew he couldn’t get there, because of injury. Both passes were right where a healthy Evans would have been. Any one who thinks Brady isn’t a top tier QB yet is an idiot.

I played and ran track against Joe & Jamie Morris, Doug Flutie, and others that made practice squads and my daughter went to high school with a first string TE still playing the game. Just because we drank out of the same bubbler doesn’t mean I am a NFL RB. I played LB for a well know zvery competitive D1 collegiate team, so I to know something about the game, I also coached for over 10yrs. So recognizing poor coaching and play is not that difficult. The reason Evan’s and Brady don’t connect is because Evan’s relies on his height and physicality, he is not a smart receiver, he turns one way Brady throws another, that’s on him and this has been a problem since day 1. Go back and watch the AB TAPE as you call it, he and Brady read the defender the same. As much of a moron AB is, the man is one if the smartest WR’s to play the game. Diggs, Hopkins, Kupp, Godwin, Cooper, Jefferson, Chase, Thielan etc. They get it, Evan’s almost gets it.
