Quit Blaming Tom Brady

November 29th, 2022

Playing taps for Tom Brady.

Man, how desperate do Bucs fans have to be to blame Tom Brady for the offensive woes?

Brady is still one of the better quarterbacks in the league. At 45!

Joe saw comments yesterday from fans who fed up with Brady (boy, wait till you get a load of Kyle Trask next year if you think Brady is washed). Joe just cannot believe folks are that myopic.

Now one guy Joe has tons of respect for is popular national radio and network television personality Adam Schein. He too seems to have fallen into the trap that Brady is dragging down the Bucs, so he typed for NFL.com.

The Bucs are still the odds-on favorite to win the moribund NFC South — a division with all four teams under .500 — but don’t mistake that for Tampa actually being a good team capable of doing damage in January. It ain’t happening. At age 45, Tom Brady can’t spin this miracle — not when his offense ranks 27th in scoring, not when he just lost prime protector Tristan Wirfs to injury. TB12 stiff-armed Father Time for an extraordinary number of years, but he’s here now and he’s set to deliver his wrath. It might not come until January, given the ghastly state of the NFC South, but it’ll come.

If Brady was really the problem with the offense, wouldn’t he have more than two picks through 11 games?

Besides, in a hurry-up offense (which is tougher to direct than a normal offense), the Bucs are top-five in the NFL in completions, yards and touchdowns. Take a wild guess who threw each one of those passes? That would be Brady.

Does that sound like an over-the-hill quarterback to you?

Yeah, the Bucs ought to be running a hurry-up offense a lot more than they do since it works so well. Anyone with common sense knows this.

Then you look at who the Bucs offensive coordinator is and you see Byron Leftwich.

Nevermind.

    This team needs coaches.

  2. FrontFour Says:

So Joe, when the offense kicked into gear in 2020 after the bye week everyone was crediting Brady for imposing his will on the scheme and play calling. Now everything is BL’s fault. Don’t misunderstand, not a Leftwich fan. But TB has enormous influence. He game plans. He picks players. And he makes the final play call every down. There’s a lot wrong with this offense, three new lineman, (now four), losing a first ballot HOF TE, having only one healthy WR (Evans) until the last couple weeks, no impact WR3 and no running game (see notes on O line above). So, lots wrong with this offense, but if TB takes credit when things go right he has to stand up and take responsibility when things go wrong.

  3. DungyDance Says:

The thing is, there’s 2 Tom Brady’s influencing the team. There’s the QB on the field, which is just as Joe described above. Still a top shelf player. But then there’s a guy with unwavering loyalty. And in BL, TB is backing the wrong horse. Tell me TB’s demands about offensive coordinator are not relevant. He defends BL and that’s a big part of why BL is still employed. Joe you’ve been writing about Bowles condoning BL, but so is Mr. TB12.

  4. Anonymous Says:

The hurry up goes against everything Bowles is trying to do. He’s in the slow down and let the Bucs defense rest mode. He’s trying to win with defense. That could work if your a master at game management like Belichek. Instead it’s a debacle.

  5. OBVIOUS Says:

I made a comment yesterday about Tom’s performance at what should have been the “end of the game”. And to be clear. It wasn’t his talent and capabilities that I questioned AT ALL! It WAS his HEART. He played “so strangely”… He was playing as if he was defeated or indebted to the mafia or something. IT DIDN’T MAKE SENSE! HE COULD HAVE WRAPPED THE GAME! But what happened was some otherworldly, defeatist attitude looks on his face and body language. He was playing timid and the opportunity to wrap the game was THERE FOR THE TAKING! I mentioned a crisis really. I also mentioned that when he’s NOT IN HIS HEAD that he’s better than at least 90 of ANY other product out there!
I also mentioned how it IS 100% on the coaching staff and CERTAINLY the GM plays his part in this ULTIMATE LOSER ATTITUDE AND PERFORMANCE of MY TEAM.
And I stand by every single syllable I wrote.

It AIN’T his talent or capabilities! YES! HE CAN STILL HANDLE BUSINESS “Physically”It looked like MORE than that to my eyes! Something happened in the second half of that game. Why does the heart and soul seem to be ripped from my players at every second half? It’s like fed ex delivers bad news or something during every freaking second half.

I wish he would take this team by the short hairs and RUN WITH IT! I wish he would “HIMSELF” to stop doubting and Start DOING! I don’t see another way for this to work “at this time”.
    But somebody PLEASE, do Something!

  6. Lamarcus Says:

Last couple of years….. Brady tds were highlighted as why he should be MVP. Now, we nevermind the tds, Brady has only 2 picks so he playing well. It’s everyone else fault. Reality is, there’s a huge drop off on 2 positions – QB and Rb. Questioable MLB. Every other position is fine

  7. Fansince76 Says:

With all the talent on this team to go 5-6 is mind-blowing!
    Coaches need to all go!

  8. Jeff Says:

Clueless Todd is the problem. Refuses change. Dungy Stubborn and Schiano stupid.

  9. Kentucky Buc Says:

Bucs are playing with 2 downs on a lot of possessions . Add in incompetent play calls, dropped passes, O line penalties and it’s really tough to keep a drive alive. Sadly this is by design as far as the scheme and play calling goes. This is Bowles ball. Belichek can pull this off because his teams are disciplined . This team is undisciplined just like they were before Brady came. Only hope is to take the chains off and open up the offense.

  10. BuddhaBuc Says:

With what’s happened this year, I start with the GM. We knew the O-Line would be an issue, but he ignored it, outside of getting Mason at guard. So many fails at bringing in new players. Signing Gage for 3 yrs is starting to look like a mistake. Rudolph is def a mistake and so many more. Not signing Suh was a miss. They could have easily resigned Suh instead of a couple of the others and rotated him and Hicks. That would have been a more than solid D-Line with that rotation. Then the blame is shared with the coaching staff. I’m almost at the point of looking forward to what happens after this coaching staff is gone and who our next QB will be. This has been more depressing than most because of the buildup of expectations. At this point, there is no way we make it to the playoffs.

  11. ChiBuc Says:

“in a hurry-up offense (which is tougher to direct than a normal offense), the Bucs are top-five in the NFL in completions, yards and touchdowns”

Great. Where are they in the standing? Now, apply Parcells’ quote that has been swirling on this site the last 2 days…

  12. Mike C Says:

How would it be worse if the Bucs fired the head coach today? It can’t be worse, do it.

  13. ChiBuc Says:

There is a lot of blame to go around:

    Licht’s complacency
    BA’s ego driven legacy motivations
Bowles’ absolute lack of executive skills
Byron’s (bullseye of blame) utter incompetence
Armstrong’s neglect to consistently prepare ST
Brady’s lack of focus on the season from jump
And it continues to trickle down from there

There may be only one goat, but there are many scapegoats in that locker room

  14. Vijay Says:

Brady is lucky DB’s have dropped so many easy INT’s, it would be way higher than 2. He’s missing a lot of open throws because he doesn’t want to stand in the pocket and get hit, but Joe is too much of a homer to admit it so he blames Leftwich instead.

  15. Reggie Jax Says:

The coaches need to wake up or go. Playing not to lose only guarantees losing. Bowles is the problem, he’s afraid to lose therefore he can’t win games with that approach.

  16. JimmyfromNY Says:

Brady trolls put Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen behind this off line with no running game. The worst play caller in football in second/ third and long every series and see how many turnovers you guys have. Every quarterback every game misses throws, mix in WR with no speed either injured , dropping balls or can’t get open And yes, there’s been some drop interceptions. There’s also been some drop touchdown passes as well that stuff even itself out. The only rational conclusion, this team is a 2 win without Brady.

  17. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Ranked 27th in offense with great QB play?

Bowles, BL & Brady are all playing too conservatively……that is why Brady has only 2 picks…..but that play is coming at a big price…..touchdowns.

Sure, Brady’s completion rate is fine….but it’s padded because there are so many passes to backs. 31% of his passes went to White at an average of 5 yards per carry….all 9 targets were completions…
Evans, on the other hand was targeted 9 times with only 2 completions.

I’m not saying Brady is bad….just saying he could do better….and just a bit better might make the difference in close games.

  18. Reggie Jax Says:

Bowles needs to go. Can’t win games playing not to lose. Imagine punting on the other teams 37 yard line on a fourth and two.

  19. Richard Dickson Says:

Yeah, Tom Brady is 4th in the league in passing yards — but he’s averaging 42 attempts per game to get there, and his yards per completion is 6.5, good enough for 29th behind such luminaries as Zach Wilson and Davis Mills. He’s consistently missing on his long passes (which he still tries for too often on short yardage downs) and regularly throwing short when more yards are needed. He clearly doesn’t trust his line, and trusts some receivers more than others.

Not saying he’s THE problem, but it’s also crazy to say he’s not A problem.

  20. Reggie Jax Says:

Bowles needs to go. Can’t win games playing not to lose.

  21. Oneilbuc Says:

How many points did the defense held teams in the first 3 quarters?? They held the Panthers 7 points for 3 and half quarters and offense couldn’t score points. They held the Steelers to 20 points offense couldn’t score. They held the Packers to 16 points offense couldn’t score. Go back and look at all the games going in to the 4th quarter and you will find out who’s the reason why we are 5 and 6 . Brady is the problem with the offense and yall know it this is the same plays from last year and 2020 when they changed the play book to a Brady New England type of offense wich they should. But Brady is done and it’s ok it don’t take away what he done in the pass he’s still one of the greatest quarterback of all time. But y’all need to stop being a bunch of yes man’s to Tom Brady and stop trying to make Byron Leftwich a scapegoat.

  22. Anonymous Says:

Brady has cemented his legacy as the GOAT, and is still better than most QB’s in the NFL. But that being said, as the clear cut leader of the team, if you give him all the credit when they win, it’s unfair to completely excuse him for losses. The Coaches have not earned the right to be retained given their poor performance. Injuries and key retirements have decimated the team. But you can’t be the inspirational leader of an underachieving team and accept no responsibility for their underperformance.

  23. alton green Says:

Folks i’m going to try my best to make you realize just how freak’n obvious the Bucs problems are. What makes me qualified to opine? I’ve been an NFL fan since before it was the NFL. Also a career Brady fan. I would challenge any QB in the league to be successful with the decisions that Todd and Byron make. All you naive people are too scared to blame the real doofus. I’ve been complaining about Bowles since he was the last one picked on the playground. Not convinced? The Goat has to stand there and watch the clock tick when Bowles has 3 timeouts. Punts the ball TWICE instead of going for it which would have won the game TWICE. Trust me my friends it’s very difficult to watch Tom lose, but to lose when the decisions are made by a doofus. BTW, My son went to college with Byron at Marshall U. average at best.

  24. Destinjohnny Says:

    It’s simple
Our center and guards can’t run block
    Which means we can’t win
    This falls on the gm

  25. Oneilbuc Says:

JimmyfromNY. Our offensive line is ranked second on giving up sacks.Brady is the least sacked quarterback in the league this year. So you can’t blame the offensive line he’s had time to throw. I would love to see this many excuses for the next quarterback the bucs have starting. If this any other quarterback these losses will be all on him .

  26. alton green Says:

I really don’t know anything about the Jets when “weekend at Bernies” was the loser, woops i mean coach. But I do know Tom Brady and all that talent. And Joe Biden got 80 million votes

  27. Defense Rules Says:

Destin Johnny … Thank you. Tired of everyone giving Licht a pass when he’s the one who set the table for this mess.

Lack of any real DEPTH is at the heart of our problems IMO, but dual-hatting Bowles as both the DC AND HC also falls under the responsibility of the GM. So does keeping BL as our OC when he’s obviously not getting it done.

  28. JD Says:

Brady has simply looked deflated by the forth quarter because he knows how bad the coaching is from the top. He blatantly said it a couple of weeks ago by stating on his podcast that Bellichick always has his players well prepared. I personally think that was a shot across the bow of this team’s coaches!

  29. Duane Says:

There is plenty of blame to go around, and TB12 deserves his fair share. Once again, back to stats for losers. Brady throwing 2 picks is more about how he got rid of the ball too early to let the play develop. Oh boy, we have the greatest 45 yo to ever play quarterback, on a 5-6 team. Just because we lay part of the blame on Brady doesnt mean any of us want to see Trask, so slow down highspeed. This also is not an endorsement of Bowles or Lefty, because ultimately, THE WHOLE TEAM will suffer the consequences of such a poor performance this season. This team took another flier on TB12, likely had to change coaches due to health issues, and settled on Bowles, who just isnt the right fit for the current situation the team is in. Bellicheat likely anticipated this play from Brady and realized he wasnt going to bend over backwards to surround him with enough talent to succeed.

  30. alton green Says:

OK I see there are still some Earnest T. Bass fans out there that complain about the goat. So here is another attempt to make you look “not stupid’ Tom comes to Tampa. year 1 with BA. wins superbowl year 2 w/o BA loses NFC champ game with Todd because of a horrible decision by Todd. year 3 with Todd………………………………………….!!!!! Just a reminder to those with an i.q. higher than their age. Through 12 games Tom has averaged 67% of his passes. He has 2 ints. Now here’s where i raise the curtain. we have a losing season. As a long time Brady fan i would normally say the Bucs will get it together. BUT not with Todd and Byran

  31. NEfan Says:

Obvious@, LaMarcus & oneilsuckyall, funny how you place no blame on the receivers. I give Godwin a pass due to his prior injury and now seems to be coming into his own. But other than a handful of plays the two supposedly HOF’ers do nothing. The whole dynamic of the Carolina game changes if Evan’s doesn’t drop that ball. To say Brady didn’t have the will to win late in the game Sunday is a joke, the shuffle pass, the bullet to Jones. He was ready to do his thing but low and behold and we’ve seen it over and over again Smith’s penalties kill a drive and his HC literally shat himself. How.do you NOT see this. He leads the league in tight throws, why? His receivers are worst in the league is separation yards. He has 2 downs to work with 85% of the time. Mahomes and Allen do face these problems. Do you really believe Reid would take the ball out of Mahomes hands or McDermott Allen’s with the game on the line?

He has had worst lines but NEVER a abomination of a running game. 8 in the box on first down, rush 4 drop 7 on 2nd & 3rd, good luck with that, that’s Brady’s world on 2022.

It ain’t Lenny or White, it’s Bowels and Leftnut. Thanks Again BA you dk.

  32. Duane Says:

6th ranked defense, 27th ranked offense, but its all Bowles and Lefty’s fault, and nothing to do with Brady.

  33. NEfan Says:

Duane, if Belichick holds on the Brady he has another SB and possibly another or at least deep in the playoffs. Bad analogy. Go back to your Pokémon game. FYI, if Belichick had this Bucs team since 2020, White would be the best LB in the league and know how to use his shoulders to tackle Smith would be benched multiple times and he’d have 3 more rings. His problem is he thinks he can win with any top 15 QB and that’s not working out too good for him.

  34. LVMYBUCS Says:

I would take Tom Brady for as long as he would play for us. Those who think he is washed up as Joe said “wait until you see he replacement”.

  35. NEfan Says:

By the way, I don’t think this article is about Brady being washed up but more about him as good as he is not being able to overcome today’s Bucs challenges.

  36. Goatfarmer Says:

    Brian Flores or Eric Bienemy.

  37. JD Says:

Tom GOAT Brady has definitely missed some reads of open receivers he doesnt normally miss. BUT, that is not the reason for our 6 losses!

    Bad Coaching and clock management
    dropped passes
predictable play calling or wrong call for the down and distance
    undisciplined offensive line
failure of receivers to get seperation
players not coached on basic fundamentals of screen passes
players out of position for successful blocks or playing outside their base.
Incompetent coaches (oh wait I think I said that already)
Finally – Brady missing some passes or reads.

  38. Goatfarmer Says:

It’s Tuesday morning. A shakeup at One Buc Place should have happened by now. Glazers, like Toad’s Bowels, playing it safe and accepting the losing.

  39. Duane Says:

NEfan- thanks for the chowderhead insight. Enjoy living in the past. Brady plays in Tampa now. Please continue to regale us with tales of how the cheating hoodie would have approached the game with a team of players he did not assemble. Many of us would love to hear about it. Please tell us about your life size standees of TB12 and the Hoodie that you hug every night before you say your prayers and go to sleep.

  40. tbbucs3 Says:

“Tom Brady is 4th in the league in passing yards — but he’s averaging 42 attempts per game to get there, and his yards per completion is 6.5, good enough for 29th behind such luminaries as Zach Wilson and Davis Mills”

Spot on, but might be too triggering for Brady fan boys

  41. tbbucs3 Says:

Hilarious how so many on here will still claim that Brady has been playing at an elite level while the offense has only scored over 22 points one time…..is that even possible??

  42. NEfan Says:

He leads all categories when running the hurry up offense. That’s #1 ttbuc, do teams play to their players strengths or not? Apparently not Bowels.

    Goatfarmer why not Reich?

  43. NEfan Says:

FYI, Bill Obrien would be a great coach. He went to the playoffs 1st four years at Houston until the premadona Watson and Hopkins sabotaged him because they didn’t like to be told what to do.

  44. Duane Says:

Its not really a strength when you are 27th in offense on a 5-6 team. Stats are for losers.

  45. Darin Says:

Quit blaming any players. If they’re not getting benched then they’re doing the job the HC is asking. He is in charge of this mess

  46. Craig Says:

Brady misses a couple of passes per game, he isn’t great at making adjustments to a pressed receiver this year, but he is better than most.

When you continue playing a player who ends up 2 of 9 with an offensive interference call on one of those catches, you know it is the coach. Scooter or Breshard could have blown the top off of the defense a few times and kept them honest, but they didn’t get off the bench.

Cade Otton was also left behind in this one. So many people who could have made an impact, but our OC can’t remember their names to put them in.

    Brain dead.

  47. Darin Says:

    Tbbucs
It’s possible you’ve been watching it. He runs what’s called. Leftwich continues to do the same thing and expect different results. We all know what that means. This is the insane clown posse coaching this team!

  48. Infomeplease Says:

No winning coach plays “not to loose”!! In this league you have to
“play to win”!! Bowles’ prevent defense lost this game! His lack of confidence in this team needs to go!!!! Bring in a winner!!

  49. Tap-Out Says:

Tom is not playing well, end of story ….let me be clear the reason he is not playing well is because of FOURNETT gives Tom comfortably in the pocket that the rookie White or any other running back on this team can, that’s it that’s all! In our last loss Big Mike was a no show, that can’t happen because it reduces our chance of winning …get Big Mike involved, put him in motion, move him inside! Now with T Wirfs down and D Smith regressing in his play, the quick passing game is all we have for the next four weeks ! At this point making the playoffs would be like winning the Super Bowl! DRAFT Sheduer Sanders alis SS396!

  50. beano Says:

JOE SAYS: “boy, wait till you get a load of Kyle Trask next year”

Based on what facts? No, hate isn’t a fact.

  51. NEfan Says:

Tapout, how many games did you miss? Lenny has played in all but 1, he changes nothing. Duane and Tapout, I need to know what QB in this league succeeds with this basic offense? Watch Andy Reid, do you ever know where the ball is going next? Same with Shanahan. Duane 27th in the league is a stat dipshat. My point was you want to win on offense play to the offenses strength not their weaknesses. You sound like Bowles, we don’t pay attention to stats but every other HC in the league relies on them. This guy is a moron and incompetent. You clearly have never played or coached football at a high level.

  52. D-Rok Says:

    NEfan,

I commented days ago the possibility of Reich or O’Brien.

    Goat,

    Flores maybe, Bienemy yes.

My expanded list to replace either OC or HC, or both:

O’Brien (most experience), Bienemy, Reich, Flores.
I think all 4 of these guys would kick-start this offense.
    Wonder if I’m missing anyone?

Keep Todd as DC – he’s good to very-good at defense.

  53. beano Says:

“If Brady was really the problem with the offense, wouldn’t he have more than two picks through 11 games?”

He’d certainly have more than 17 points per game.

  54. tbbucs3 Says:

Brady’s 2 Ints mean absolutely nothing if your not putting the ball in the end zone consistently.

Teddy Bridgewater can do what Brady’s currently doing with this offense

  55. OBVIOUS Says:

    @NEfan
Well thanks for a little back and forth but I myself don’t feel like Tom is washed physically. I’m quite sure it’s something else. He’s not been perfect either and he deserves some blame. BUT have No Doubt, this is on the coaches and GM. It’s to the point of true insanity at this point. Honestly NE, I feel your plight for Tim but it’s unnecessary. You Don have to fight so had on his behalf because most aren’t attacking Tom in the fashion you’ve been defending in. The man can only do so much. I mean come on. So, to wrap it up from my vantage….

Tom’s in his own head. BUT HE’S NOT ALONE… Most of the offense feels like abused children. I’m kinda like the parent whom can’t standcto sit back and watch the abuse! I start feeling like most I suppose and I’d like to take my belt off and start beating the crap out of the abuser! He (in this case they) deserves a taste of their own medicine. That would be the head coach, the offensive head, and to a large degree the GM for not stopping this insanity LONG AGO when I and a few others were banging drums and bouncing off walls begging for Licht to step up LONG BEFORE it got to this miserable example of VASTLY WASTED opportunities and talent. I mean dude… This IS a Pro Bowl roster headed by THE BEST QB to EVER PLAY THIS GAME!
I wish I could be a fly on the wall in Advent Center to figure out the TRUE when’s, where’s, what’s, and why’s. I will NEVER understand why the ownership doesn’t force change. Is Tom cutting his own throat by supporting Leftcreep to the point of ride or die? Has Leftworst really sold Brady on that? What I saw was…. well to keep it simple, at the end of the game, I saw losing. I saw a defeatist attitude throughout. MY REAL QUESTION IS WHETE DID IT COME FROM? At this point, I’m not going to have the answers other than the “obvious”. And that’s that Bowles is not the man for the job. It feels like he has pussified the ENTIRE TEAM! AND HE HAS! What’s passing me off is that I’m pretty sure the GM nor the owners are going to do a thing about it. When we all know they can. I myself have never seen this much waste of talent in a fairly long lifetime. And being a Buc fan, believe me THAT’S SAYING A LOT!

  56. John Olmstead Says:

In NE, Brady had the authority to check out of plays based upon the defensive alignment and personnel. In Tampa, Brady seems to be stuck with with the play call of BL. Going up tempo would solve a lot of problems, but they don’t do it. Bowles is turning out to be a horrendous hire.

  57. LastDance Says:

tbbucs3 is back sucking on his hate binky again… waaaaa waaaa baby. You and Oralbuc need to be dropped off at daycare

  58. Rand Says:

Brady shouldn’t be immune from criticism either. Everyone kept saying Brady was running the show and had the autonomy to run the offense but now that they are losing it’s only Leftwich’s or Bowles’s fault? I’m sorry but Brady hasn’t been sharp and when he is, it comes in spurts. His accuracy is waning and he is so gun-shy that he doesn’t let plays develop and has become a check down QB.

  59. Mike Johnson Says:

In order for us to be successful, Brady needs a close to, perfect O line. Did anybody else notice the huge openings for him to run against the Browns? They leave them there because they know he cannot run 5 yrds. brady is not innocent and must shoulder some of the offensive lack of..Blame. And Just-tus..for all.

  60. Gamblers Anonymous Says:

Alton, you realize the QB and team captain can call a TO too right. For such a long time fan you seem to not understand how timeouts work.

  61. Ryan b Says:

The bucs have lots of problems this year and Tom Brady and his 45 year old body and divorce distractions are clearly affecting his play. The announcers were trying to blame Evans for only catching 2 of 7 targets at one point in the game but 3 of the 5 misses were so badly thrown balls that you would have thought I threw them. We should have kept Winston. Winston had his issues but being 45 and divorced are not two of them, he is still in his prime but just needed proper development like he got under Sean Payton when he looked good. Had the bucs kept him within a system and didn’t let him bomb balls they could have a future at the qb position instead of Kyle Trask who gives us no confidence since Blaine Gabbert (the career backup) keeps being above him on the depth chart and nothing great is coming out from behind the scenes.

I’ll just throw it out there….go scoop winston from the saints for 14 million a year next year which will help some money issues and allow you to sign some younger skill, he already has chemistry with some of the recievers and a winning mindset…it will also allow me to wear the Winston jerseys I have in my closet again and save me money next year.
