Four Starters Will Miss Sunday’s Game Against Los Angeles

November 4th, 2022

Antoine Winfield, Russell Gage, Luke Goedeke and Cameron Brate will not play against the Rams on Sunday, head coach Todd Bowles announced today.

The Winfield loss is painful. He’s the Bucs’ best tackler and he’s not ready following a concussion suffered against the Panthers two Sundays ago.

With Julio Jones back, Joe isn’t missing Gage and Nick Leverett at left guard was at least as good as Goedeke eight days ago against the Ravens.

Look at the bright side regarding Winfield: at least he won’t be on the field to give up a big play to Cooper Kupp

    Injury Report:

    Winfield – OUT
    Brate – OUT
    Gage – OUT
    Goedeke – OUT (thank god)

To be honest Winfiled is the only name here that really bothers me… Brate and Gage when healthy don’t contribute much and Goedeke is the worst LG in the NFL.

I guess DT Akiem Hicks and WR Julio Jones are playing. Then they will both be on IR for another 6-8 games.

What a waste of salary cap dollars. To make the sting worse – we will still owe both dead cap money next season.

I hope GM Jason Licht has learned a lesson. Over 30 and often injured free agents are not good investments.

  3. Derek Says:

Russell Gage was a horrible signing, I hope we can cut him after this year.

  4. Uncle Urk Says:

Does this mean Jensen is playing to?

  5. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Derek

We will still owe Gage @ $10M of guaranteed money after this season…

We could possibly trade him to another team but it’s doubtful given the contract and his current production.

GM Jason Licht deserves some heat for this season’s struggles.

  6. Manny Says:

I really could careless about godecke and brate. I still think gage is a good receiver, who hasnt shown his full potential due to constant injury and not being on the same page with tom yet. Luke shouldnt start another game in his life anyway. Im sure there are plenty practice squad players or yet to be signed undrafted free age ts who could sleep walk a game better then him. Its a damn shame winfield is gone though. That man is a beast. I love his playing. Hes old school.

  7. CChead Says:

Winfield was the best player on the Bucs defense all year. He will be missed for sure.
The rest ehh, not so much.

    Winfield is a HUGE loss…

    3 – 6 here we come

  10. unbelievable Says:

I’m worried about Winfield’s career long term… didn’t he already have concussion issues last season?

  11. Joe Says:

I’m worried about Winfield’s career long term… didn’t he already have concussion issues last season?

Yes. He had a concussion last year as well.

  12. BucU Says:

Gage you haven’t made too many fans here in Tampa since u arrived I can guarantee you that.
MASSIVE disappointment. We knew what we were getting with Julio and Hicks but Gage has done absolutely nothing for this team since day 1.

  13. DBS Says:

So if you want to burn someone now who do you target? Not hard to answer that question.

  14. Panhandle Buc Says:

Winfield is by far the biggest loss! I hope these multiple concussions of his derails his career or mental health for that matter. Kupp is going to rip us apart 200+ yard game, we all know it and won’t be able to stop it. #lostseason

  15. Panhandle Buc Says:

    *Doesn’t derail

  16. Redeemer Says:

Sucks about Winfield. Concussions are tricky. I sincerely hope he’s ok. I still have headaches and memory problems from highschool, and two years of D2. Gage has been the biggest disappointment, and has been hurt from day one.

Joe, heard anything on Hicks? I know he returned to practice.

  17. EEK Says:

Brate seemed done for the year/forever based how it all went down

  18. Pewter Warrior 813 Says:

The injuries over the last two years have been insane. Team just can’t catch a break against the injury bug.

  19. Rod Munch Says:

How is Antoine Winfield not back yet?

    Jesus Christ, toughen up people.

He’s by FAR the best defensive player we have. God, that hurts.

He had better have some real issues and not just being a pansy playing it safe. John Lynch, Ronde Barber, Derek Brooks, Warren Sapp, they’re not letting a headache keep them out of the game for 2 weeks.

  20. Joe Says:

How is Antoine Winfield not back yet?

Hard to rush a concussion or “just wrap it up.”

  21. Roc Says:

Sooo let’s work on the excuses for Sunday

“ I feel the team is playing together better we aren’t there yet”

“We we’re still down some key players next week we should be health”

    Hahaha

    Nothing Changes with this Coach

  22. ModHairKen Says:

Sunday is the start of a big run. A lot of crap holding the Offense back has nothing to do with play calling. This was a funk. It has ended.

    Bucs by 21.

    LOL

I do believe that Goedeke will be very good, just not until 2023 or so.

As far as Gage, we heard during the preseason that no one could cover him. So I just think we’ve not seen him really healthy as yet in the regular season.
Personally, I’d rather see him sit out as long as it takes to get healthy and go with Tyler Johnson or Perriman in the meantime to replace him. We need him healthy in case the Bucs somehow manage to get into the playoffs.

IF Gage, Jones, Godwin, and Evans were all healthy and Ryan Jenson came back then our offense would look better.

  24. WeSuk.com Says:

Like it matters. We lost with them, we can just as easily lose without ‘em.

  25. Marine Buc Says:

    @ BFSince96

I agree. Both Marpet and Cappa struggled in their initial seasons…

I am not calling Goedeke a bust yet. He needs to put on about 20-25 pounds of muscle next off-season and that will help because he is getting manhandled on a regular basis.

  26. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

We grossly overpaid for Gage, and for Brate.
And like Marine Buc says “GM Jason Licht deserves some heat for this seasons struggles”!
Remember everyone, it was Licht who allowed us to be coached by Bowles.
Licht could have said “No” but he did not!
Gage will still be owed 10 million next year in guaranteed money, because of Licht’s stupid deal.
I will never forgive Licht for that stupid excessive contract he gave to Brate,
It is time to rebuild our team, with a new coach and a new general manager.

  27. George Says:

Berate should retire with whatever health he can retain at this point.

  28. BucsFanSince1996 Says:

@Marine Buc, yeah, Goedeke needs an off-season to work on a number of things. I’m sure that the Bucs had no intention of starting him this year, I doubt they would have done that even after Marpet retired and Stinnie got put on IR. Had Jensen not gotten injured they could have moved Hainsey over to LG but that was no longer an option. Goedeke played on the right side at Central Michigan at tackle and moving over to RG in this situation made it even more challenging for him.

Licht has had an excellent track record in recent years when it comes to drafting o-linemen, and I believe Goedeke will eventually be ok. He just got put into a bad situation he wasn’t ready for.

  29. BucsFanSince1996 Says:

@Chris, JL has gotten more things right than wrong and has been REALLY good with the draft in recent years. He built the team that won the Super Bowl just two years ago. Isn’t it premature to throw him under the bus?

We don’t even know whether or not HE decided that Bowles would be HC. The Glazers get involved in those types of decisions and I would bet big money they did this time as well.

  30. FortMyersDave Says:

The Rams will exploit the loss of Winfield, likely they will only need to score more than 13 or 16 to win anyhow if Leftwich is still calling the plays; when it rains it pours. Take the Rams on the moneyline and the under.

  31. Goatfarmer Says:

Without Antoine and Logan Ryan, there is no one smart enough to understand their assignments when Toad’s Bowel sends the coverage in.

Toad wants to be the genius.
