Chris Godwin Says He Expects To Be 100 Percent Next Season

November 30th, 2022

Chris Godwin

Sobering but understandable chatter from Chris Godwin.

The second-leading receiver in Tampa Bay history is not 100 percent and doesn’t expect to be until next season.

Godwin referenced blocks that he’s not getting to — Joe found a couple on the Browns-Bucs film — in addition to plays Godwin can’t make yet and occasional chemistry challenges with Tom Brady tied to blowing his ACL in December of 2021.

“I think it’s underrated how difficult it is to be playing at the highest level of football when you’re behind the 8-ball,” Godwin told the Buccaneers Radio Network. “Because now everyone else kind of has already a step up on you and you have to do so much more to like make it work. … I feel like ACL recoveries are like, until you’re like back-back, I feel like it’s like a year, year-and-a-half, two-year process before everything is like completely ready — to where you don’t feel like any residual soreness or stiffness or anything like that.

“So understanding that, I realize it’s going to take time for me to be back to what I’m used to doing. To making the plays that I usually do and to having the types of transitions in and out of my breaks, getting to the spots I need to get to. What I’ve realized throughout the whole [recovery] is, man, football’s hard. It’s really, really hard, and it’s hard to play at an elite level. So [the ACL injury] gave me a greater appreciation for the level I was playing at prior.”

Great candid stuff from Godwin that really speaks for itself.

If you’re looking for the old Godwin, then you’ll find him next season.

Makes sense. I remember when we got Revis from the Jets coming off a ACL. He didnt look like himself most of the year

  3. Anonymous Says:

Bad News is that Bucs will not be able to sign him next year as y they will be 40 million over the cap

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

He seems to be our only receiver who can get open…

  5. Marine Buc Says:

I hope so. The Bucs are dumping a lot of salary cap onto this guy…

If the Bucs continue imploding and TB12 retires again – which contracts should the Bucs unload in order to help kick start the rebuild?

We will owe over $50M in dead cap space – $35M of which is TB12s.

I wonder what kind of draft capital we could get for a healthy Godwin or Mike Evans?

    Trask is excited.

  7. Dave in Winter Park, Fla Says:

But didn’t the Bucs Medical team tell everyone during training camp that Godwin would be could close to 100% at the start of November, 2022 from his ACL. That’s what I read in Joe Bucs Fan during Bucs training camp in late July.

THIS!! This is a grown man admitting his limitations and mistakes. Love to hear these comments from CG. It speaks to his maturity and intelligence.

Is it possible CG is being so candid and honest because he’s trying to set an example for his head coach?

I hope he can make it back to the elite level required in the NFL. He thinks it’s just a matter of time. I hope he’s right

  11. Craig Says:

It amazes me that he can be so calm and collected while the team falls apart around him.

He better start working with Trask soon, the Bowles flush isn’t over yet.

  12. BucU Says:

Chris Godwin is the very last thing I’m worrying about this team. He’s a great man, great player and great teammate. I’m glad he got payed.
He might be the only player on this teamwho got paid that doesn’t look like he’s taken his foot off the gas pedal. Tireless worker.
