Todd Bowles Won’t Crucify Devin White

October 20th, 2022

Bucs coach Todd Bowles.

It was so dumb.

The Bucs had the Steelers off the field on Pittsburgh’s first possession of the game. But there was a yellow hanky. Devin White, who had to be at least three steps away from Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett when he released the ball, got blasted by White and out came the flag.

It was a no-brainer in more ways than one.

Given new life, the Steelers scored a touchdown. The Bucs lost 20-18. So White cost the Bucs the game, right? Bucs coach Todd Bowles wouldn’t go there.

Asked about the play yesterday, Bowles admitted White had two bad mistakes but Bowles couldn’t single him out. Too many Bucs had braindead mistakes in the game, Bowles said.

“Nobody played good enough last week against Pittsburgh,” Bowles said. “Any time you get a penalty and a blown assignment on the first drive, you don’t come back and play well.

“Overall, I think [White has] had a good season. It’s still early – we’re getting our kinks out. He’s not the only one [who had] a busted assignment or a [mental error] here and there.

“We don’t want to rough the passer – we had a chance to get off the field. But he’s been playing well for us – he’s active, he’s healthy, he’s running around fast, he’s making plays. We’re happy with him.”

The only thing Joe had a hard time swallowing in that comment was that it is still early in the season. Is it? We are a third of the way through. And right now the Bucs offense doesn’t look much better (maybe worse) than it did Week 1.

Of course, it doesn’t help when your offensive coordinator hatches a gameplan so bad that any two-bit high school coach would grab a PC and throw it in the street after viewing it.

When it is time to stop using the “it’s still early” line of thinking?

Yeah, White didn’t play smart. At the end of the day, the defense only allowed 20 points. That shouldn’t be an insurmountable mountain to climb with the Bucs’ weapons.

To early? This is the problem with the Bucs, no sense of urgency. Like not playing Julio Jones, we want him healthy in January, really? This team is in for a rude awakening come January if they don’t turn things around NOW!

  2. August 1976 Buc Says:

It is not off the wall to say that Devins boneheaded penalty on Picket was a key factor in scoring 7 points, which is more than the difference in the final score .
Just like Will Golston last year against the Saints, a stupid boneheaded hit on the QB cost the Bucs a drive stopping interception, that the Saints then scored a TD, played a big part in that loss.
Sorry Devin, but you are long passed knowing that is just plain stupid, simply a brain fart bro of a needless penalty. Come on D White you are suppose to be better than that.

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  3. Leopold Stotch Says:

I agree Hodad, we need turn this ship around now. Besides this whole “we need him for January” is crap. Really? You’re paying him 6 or 10 mil (I don’t remember) to not play until January? Horrible return on value. Not to mention, how much playoff xperience does Julio actually have? One super bowl year and then a few one and dones in the playoffs? Just seems really dumb at this point.

  4. SufferingSince76 Says:

But BA was so mean calling out players in the media, right? Bowles appears to be a ‘whatever’ type of coach. The team takes on the coach’s personality and the difference from last year is glaring.

  5. DG060 Says:

Bowles and Leftwich are just plain bad. this team looks like they’re sleepwalking thru the season. These games have been virtually unwatchable. There is going to be hell to pay because this team as it stands right now is TERRIBLE.
This entire coaching staff is on the clock. Either respond accordingly or get the F out.

  6. OBVIOUS Says:

Come on. Bowles isn’t going to call anybody out. He’s far to well mannered to be a successful head coach in a rough and tumble sport like football. Well mannered BUT also NOT TOUGH. And this coach makes the players and me sleepy. He isn’t capable of firing men up to go after it. If you’re not willing to call it out “like it is” with what equals children… Well the results are in. These players need a man’s man to get behind and rally to. The Best Bowles can do is tell you a bed time story. A SOFT AND SWEET BEDTIME STORY. Humans don’t rally to that. Humans look for a spot to hibernate when this man talks.. Even his scolding (for lack of a better word) will just tickle your tummy. Bowles is simply in the wrong profession.

  7. garro Says:

“But he’s been playing well for us – he’s active, he’s healthy, he’s running around fast, he’s making plays.”
He cant really believe that can he?!?… Active Healthy and running around fast? yeah I can buy that part, but playing well? NO flipin way!

  8. OBVIOUS Says:

Seriously, after writing the truth out about Bowles, I feel like I need my blanky and I’m going to cry since I miss my grandma SO MUCH! ! BUT I admit. I don’t want to hurt a fly. I just don’t have the energy or feel aggressive at all…

Heck, the best I can do right now is to say this… Stupid Todd Bowles. Sorry, not feeling aggressive enough to use an exclamation point.

  9. OBVIOUS Says:

Now if you hurt my grandma or try to steel my blanket, I’ll F@@KING KILL YOUR ARSE!

  10. PSL Bob Says:

Granted the game plan sucked, and that’s on BL. But all facets of the game were bad – ST, defense and offense. I’m now starting to lean toward Bowles not being the motivational leader we had hoped would replace BA. Lack of preparation and effort is on Bowles, not Leftwich.

  11. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Here’s the really good news……White’s play and comments will save the Bucs millions on his next contract.

  12. BA’s Red Pen Says:

White has been in the league too long to make such an idiotic decision. It doesn’t seem as if he’s maturing mentally as a player. Yes he goes a thousand miles an hour but he still makes too many rookie ME’s.

  13. Kgh4life Says:

At this point Devin White is who he is. He’s a great athlete but he doesn’t have great football instincts.

  14. ModHairKen Says:

    No one coached good either.

  15. Kentucky Buc Says:

Do you really want your coach crucifying players ?

  16. Pewter Power Says:

He’s officially been labeled the Winston of the defense. Plays great football but every few possessions he makes these head scratching plays

  17. Rea7777@qq.com Says:

Dam. Shaq Mason have ankle injury

  18. BA’s Red Pen Says:

Acknowledging that White is not playing smart, which we all can see, is not crucifying the player. I guess some people only want to hear Sunshine, Puppies and Rainbows analysis but fair criticism is off limits.

  19. Listnfrmafar Says:

That’s just poor coaching. White needs to sit and have a come to Jesus meeting with himself. He plays way out of control and it appears NO coach is helping him change that. The inmates are running the asylum. Can someone ask Vea if he is bored to? Sure looks like it.

  20. Your Mom Says:

“Any time you get a penalty and a blown assignment on the first drive, you don’t come back and play well.”

Wait what? If you have a bad first drive, that’s it?

Man I’m starting to see why this guy didn’t make it with the Jets.

  21. Caleb Says:

Devin white also blew the assignment leaving the rb wide open for the td on that drive. He is not a good football player right now. He makes rookie mistakes in year 4.

  22. Dlavid Says:

Casting Arians to the side was a huge mistake . This team is has no leadership !

  23. Craig Says:

Devin White doesn’t seem to know what an assignment is. Maybe it is how short his attention span is.

When a coach says the season is still young it means the season died young and is actually over.

  24. Lakeland Steve Says:

It’s like these guys are children. White is supposed to be a leader and week after week he’s blowing assignments making stupid plays. If we could only get him to play with as much heart and intensity as Lavonte maybe this defense could turn things around for the whole team.

  25. Browsing from DC Says:

And yet another dumb statement from an otherwise smart coach:

“Any time you get a penalty and a blown assignment on the first drive, you don’t come back and play well.” – Todd Bowles

You don’t come back and play well after a mistake? So you screw up early and you’re doomed? Wtf? This has to be either a misquote or taken out of context. Otherwise it’s a pretty defeatist attitude.

  26. captivajim Says:

white didn’t play smart in the 1st game against the aints–single handed ,drawing 3 personal fouls for 45 yrds. This yr he’s over running , tackling shoulders, & of course drawing flags . I use him as trade bait for some proven O-Line guys.
we don’t need him or his mouth…..

  27. captivajim Says:

just to clarify -the game against the aints was last season

  28. Vern Says:

Defense did not lose the game but when it count the most with over 4 minutes left in the game, the defense could not get off the field. They had three chances to stop Pittsburgh 3rd in 16, they failed; 3rd in 15, they failed and 3rd in 11, they failed again. The hold team from the coaches to the players need to look in the mirror and say what can I do to save this season. Time is running out.

  29. garro Says:

Every Team I played for you got benched for the kind of crap some of these guys are pulling. Disregarding coaching got me benched once (wrong technique on a pass block) Either Devon is being poorly coached (I doubt it) or he is disregarding the coaching and should be benched.

  30. garro Says:

Crucified… no but informed in a very loud and vociferous manner by teammates and coaches that he needs to shape up. hell yeah!!!
