“This Team Is Old And Slow”

October 25th, 2022

Shot taken at GM Jason Licht’s roster.

One retired defensive wizard sees the Bucs offense as extremely plodding, and official NextGen Stats data backs him up.

Feet-loving former Jets and Bills head coach Rex Ryan, a defensive guru, is an analyst on the BSPN show Stay In Bed. Ryan knows what he’s watching when it comes to a Brady-led offense; no head coach has faced Brady more than Ryan.

So what’s the problem with the Tampa Bay offense, Rex?

“Old and slow,” Ryan replied.

“This team is old and slow. And you talk about unwatchable on offense, they are unwatchable on offense.”

Ryan went on to say his eyes told him the Bucs team speed is poor on offense, and soon after a BSPN producer sent him the NextGen Stats data that ranks the Bucs as 31st in the NFL when it comes to average top team speed on offense. It’s unclear what that exactly means, but NextGen tracks players with sensors in equipment, so they have movement miles-per-hour data down to the millisecond.

No team aspires to be slow, from pulling linemen to scrambling quarterbacks and to rumbling tight ends and skill position players.

Joe can’t say speed is why the Bucs are 3-4, but rest assured the Bucs will be looking for speed in next year’s NFL Draft.

What happened to his street cred?

  2. Anonymous Says:

    No game breakers on offense.

  3. David G Says:

They were one game away from the SB last year and now all of a sudden they’re old .BS…its a long season, let it play out. I still believe in the BUCS and TB12

  4. BucU Says:

Nobody can get open this year. Buc receiver’s look old and slow that’s for sure.

  5. SufferingSince76 Says:

It is imperative that the Bucs win this game on Thursday. If they have even a scintilla of self respect, they will play their butts off. If for no other reason, it is their job. People who know they will lose their jobs if they don’t produce work hard each and every day. Guaranteed contracts have turned some into strokers who do the bare minimum to get by.

  6. WillieG Says:

Old and slow? They sure a hell didn’t clock Darden running to the sideline. Dude is like lightning heading out of bounds.

  7. NashvilleBuc Says:

Unwatchable is right. I have reverted to recording the games and watching after they are over so I can fast-forward and limit my suffering.

  8. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Apparently, we are also young & slow…..

  9. Anonymous Says:

Need to go no-huddle hurry up, w/TB12 free to change to whatever play he wants

  10. Casual Observer Says:

Slow to adapt – to the opponent’s changing strategies.

  11. Panhandle Buc Says:

The biggest issue is players are not put into position to win! There is no creativity and certainly no adjustments. This team is very UNWATCHABLE! Looks like the Den of depression will be back open for business.

  12. August 1976 Buc Says:

The way this team looks and plays is just not good. Old and Slow = time to fix, and that is more than this season to fix.

Joe you know and we know that Bradys 3 year run is for the most part done.

Maybe they improve some, but brace yourself Joe for less traffic coming up for this next cycle of “How the Stomach Turns”, most likely you already have.

Going to take time to get younger and faster, and it is not just that, the players need to actually play well, not just younger and faster.

This takes a lot of time.

    Oh well Bucs forever!!!!!

  13. BucsFanSince76 Says:

Bucs are the 2nd oldest team in the NFL by average age. Team is simply overmatched on the Oline and Dline no matter who they play against. Situation screams for added help on both lines , yet GM Jason Licht sits on his thumb and does squat.

  14. Bucsfan13 Says:

Joe did you see the Dolphins on Sunday?! They were just so fast. You had Hill and Waddle and the RBs were hitting the holes and moving. That’s what we need. Brady could get the ball out quickly and let his receivers and backs get YAC. We don’t have that currently. Godwin still isn’t right and Evans isn’t that guy. Lenny is old and has no burst.

Joe did you listen to Brady’s latest podcast? He definitely was sending a message to the fans and media on this episode.

  15. Buc4evr Says:

Soft team top to bottom, poor execution, Brady looks like he is done for good. Other than Brady, I don’t think age has much to do with anything. Need to start Trask and rebuild as I am afraid this season is over…..

  16. beano Says:

2020 is in the rear view mirror. Trade Brady. Play Trask. If Trask were dark complected everyone here would be screaming for him to see action.

  17. Winny Testaverde Says:

Gage seemed like a slasher/fast on The Falcones…now he’s a rich man’s Freddie Martino. Grayson was and is a better fit. Anyone who paid any attention to film knew Rudolph was washed before last season even…what a severance!

  18. Winny Testaverde Says:

Every time I’m about to shart…I take Beano. Now every post beano trots out makes me want to shart. Oh the irony.

  19. Pewter Power Says:

I don’t think so. Gage is not slow Godwin is coming back from injury. Evans didn’t look slow when getting wide open on that dropped walk in touchdown. For sure their heads aren’t in the game

  20. Buc1987 Says:

I predict the Bucs don’t win another game the rest of the season.

  21. ClwJB Says:

When we are 3-7 heading for the airport in Germany, will the Glazers be waiting at the door to hand Todd and Byron their commercial tickets home?

That will be the best handoff of the 2022 season

And by God Tom looks like he aged a decade – can’t underestimate the stress a divorce brings on a person – stress is the worst aging mechanism of all

  22. Dooley Says:

    Rex Ryan wasn’t lyin

  23. unbelievable Says:

The only guys with speed are Jamel Dean and Darden.

One of them plays defense, and the other one is literally scared of contact.

  24. CChead Says:

To early to tell if this years draft will produce any long term quality players, but 2021 in my opinion was a bust. This is part of the problem.

  25. Faspro Says:

Eh, it’s the coaches’ jobs to instill fire within their players.
Let’s see what happens Thursday night…if there’s no fire, some heads gotta roll.

  26. Bojim Says:

Agreed. Stress is slowing everyone and sapping their energy.

  27. Adrnagy Says:

Our SB year team was old and slow. This team is not. But licht substitute leadership player with rookies. And new players are a step slow and it shows.
Heainsly , Goedeke vs. marpet , jensen
    Gronk vs otton
    A. Brown vs gage ( brady had a great bond passing to brown)
    Whitehead, adams vs edwards,Neal
    Suh, jpp vs hicks, hall.
    Desir vs Zion lol

  28. HC Grover Says:

Brady said he will play til 45. He is 45. He will do his best to make a good show of his last season.

  29. Hodad Says:

We have no one who can take the top off the defense at wide receiver, or in the backfield. Defenses can sit on the bucs offense never worrying about getting burned. Evans, and Godwin as good as they are don’t scare people with their speed, or open field running. I’ve been saying this team is overblown from a talent, and speed stand point for weeks. Seems Rex agrees.

  30. Miller5252 Says:

Watching the Bucs every week, the fans have a good idea of the plays that are coming. 1st and 10 98% chance it’s a run up the middle. 3rd and short yardage…. It’ll be a run or a quick slant that Brady throws at their shoes. In the 3 years that Brady has been here the playbook has really not expanded and if anything this year, it’s even more predictable. I get speed is a factor, but if you’re running the same plays over and over at the same down and distances as a defense all you have to do is play the route or where the receiver is going to be.

  31. Your Mom Says:

Much as I think the offense is a problem, speed of our linemen (half the offense personnel) isn’t the cause. You don’t need a lot of speed to run up the middle, just beef.

  32. PassingThru Says:

That’s a gross exaggeration. Hainsey and Goedeke move backward faster than just about any interior O Lineman in the NFL

  33. LakelandSteve Says:

Brady probably skews that data just a little bit. They time him in the 40 yard dash with a calendar.

  34. Defense Rules Says:

Not seeing any SOLUTIONS in here, just a bunch of whining. Actually a LOT more whining than I can remember in the darkest days from 2009 – 2019. MAYBE it’s because media & fans had such high expectations for this season, and now they feel jilted. MAYBE it’s because so many feel that this team has quit on us, and on each other. Lots of other MAYBEs come to mind.

Regardless, reading through JBF articles is getting about as depressing as watching the evening news. Wait, come to think of it, I rarely watch that anymore.

  35. OrlandoBucfan Says:

I know we are ranked as the oldest team in the league now, but that is skewed by a few players, notably Brady. Our core players are all young. Our DB’s (- Logan Ryan), our linebackers (-Lavonte David) and skill offense players are all under 30, as are our offensive linemen. From what I have witnessed the last few weeks, play calling is predictable, but the biggest issue is that Brady is rushing his passes, which is because the pass blocking has been bad. Whether that is a reality or not, Brady has not been comfortable in the pocket and he is getting rid of the ball before he is ready or the receivers are ready. This is one reason our third down conversion rate is so low. Our defense has been less than stellar, but if the offense could score some points and sustain drives, I believe all would be right on that side of the field. If we are in a win now mode, we need to swing a trade that will strengthen the offensive line.

  36. Ed Says:

I would agree with Ryan regarding the offense being slow. Very true that there are no burners running routes, Lenny has more strength than speed, Brady is immobile. The offensive line isn’t old, it certainly isn’t very athletic except for Wirfs and Mason.

Rashad White is faster than Lenny and K Vaughn is faster than White but neither are very speedy.

The Bucs offense can’t win with speed but Evans and Godwin are physical receivers, with a good offensive scheme, they can fight for the ball and win those one on one battles. Gage, not sure what we have, when I watched film of him as a Falcon he looked very quick. Not seeing that in this offense but you know what, its not a very good offense so its making everyone look slow.

  37. Darin Says:

Dear Rex. You’re older and slower.
Same guys as last season somehow they got it done then. Get lefty outey. Everyone looks slow when the defense knows what you’re doing and beats you to the spot.

  38. Redeemer Says:

I don’t necessarily think it’s a team speed issue, but they certainly aren’t playing fast. When you play tentatively, it looks slow.

  39. Uncle Urk Says:

Those stats are incorrect. The speed in which the LG and LT are beat has to be the fastest in the league. The C had a good game. He isn’t as bad as the other two.

  40. 2022 return of the goat Says:

    Fire BL

  41. Aleyz2020 Says:

Maybe the Grim Reaper could stand behind BL on the sidelines this week. That might open his eyes real wide!

  42. Hassani Says:

Rex is right! This team is playing in slow motion. I have watched them week after week. No urgency at all. Same ole predictable plays, run Lenny off tackle for 3 yards, full start, play action to Chris Godwin 5 yards across the middle or the quick bubble screen ( only play that works) 3 and outs all game…. nooooo creativity!! Man let White get some reps in the backfield now!!! He and Mike Evans are the only play makers on offense. I like Lenny but he can’t get 1 yard to keep the drive going!! Come on .. change this trash offense now!!! It’s gonna be a long season fellas

  43. Mike Johnson Says:

Nobody wants to talk about it. But Brady is under and overthrowing the ball bigtime. At times, he’s not even getting the ball to his outlets or utility valves. yet, fans wanna blame leftwhich for that? brady looks unsettled and worried. Worried about his lack of a strong O line and unsettled about them millions he is getting ready to shell out to his wife who will soon be up under another man..spending Bradys money.

  44. Arnold Says:

No huddle, is the key. Brady is a master at this. After two plays the defense will be winded and slower. Only change out the offense, after a 1st down.

  45. OLDE pfart Says:

CRISP is the missing word….there is no crispness to the execution this year……watch other teams play….fast off the snap….same on defense…..seems like there is a lack of energy displayed most of the time…..link this with what play will be next….ie: #7. Up the middle is so predictable……and no hole…..plus Brady underthrowing slants every game….or ends slowing their breakaway and being short of a catch downfield…..C’mon guys….get some damn energy back and execute ….by the way…..the enemy runs with their feet….not their shoulders….tackle the feet….that stops them from the extra 3 to 7 yards after contact. Just my 2 cents.

  46. Lenne Gilzow Says:

Too many players left and too many got injured. The O-line especially. Also extremely hampering the running game. Too many unoriginal play calls too.
