“They Have Completely Fallen Apart”

October 25th, 2022

Unfair to rip defense?

Somebody at One Buc Palace must have hacked off NFL Network analyst Brian Baldinger.

Joe doesn’t profess to know Baldinger well. The former Colts offensive lineman has made a nice living as a football analyst for FOX and for NFL Network.

Joe has met Baldinger four or five times. Comes off as a really, really cool dude and he does his homework. Joe always enjoys Baldinger’s takes.

Baldinger does great film breakdowns on Twitter, almost always highlighting where players are doing well.

Not the past two or three weeks.

Baldinger has been killing the Bucs defense. Baldinger claims Bucs defenders are almost always out of position, seem often confused on where to line up at the snap, have sloppy sets where they leave holes wide open, and he is generally disgusted by their play.

(In the video below, there’s yet another example of Devin White trying to tackle high, with a predictable missed tackle.)

Hey, Joe’s right there with Baldinger when it comes to tackling. But Joe doesn’t know what has gotten into Baldinger when it comes to the Bucs defense. He’s been really teeing off on them.

Now Joe is not going to sit here and claim the Bucs defense is anything like the 2002 Bucs defense, no way. No, it’s not as good as 2020 either. But it’s not like the Bucs are getting clobbered because of the defense.

Look, the Bucs defense gave up 20 points against Pittsburgh and 21 against Carolina. That’s not awful. And 20 and 21 points should not be insurmountable point totals to overcome when you look at how badly the Steelers and Stinking Panthers are playing.

And when you have Tom Brady, Mike Evans and Chris Godwin all healthy on offense, scoring 21 points against bad teams should be a given.

Joe’s keeping eyes on the ball. Yeah, the defense could play better. But it is the offense, or lack thereof, which is killing the Bucs.

Oh come on Joe, if he’s hacked off about anything, it’s the abysmal play of our team.

No heart. No passion. Sloppy mistakes left and right on both sides of the ball.

Lol @ him being mad at someone at OBP

  2. Tye Says:

    BAD coaching!

  3. Jerry R Jones Says:

I believe he knows how good we can be and is disappointed, as we all are. They’re not getting a 40 burger thrown on them, but they perform like they are.

  4. Adrnagy Says:

It’s one player each play. Look at Zion he got burn nasty on the edge. Vea took a bad angle on the 70yd run.
Thursday it will be whomever is replacing Winfield. Imo it’s not coaching at this point , it’s players either bad instinct or mentally.

  5. Tbbucs3 Says:

Even with all the flaws on the defense……the Bucs defense is still playing at a much higher level than the offense.

  6. Tbbucs3 Says:

But how poposterous to suggest that a 45 year old QB who has had 1 foot out the door since training camp and is coming off a 3 point performance against the Panthers might be washed….

  7. captivajim Says:

white should be traded for a proven O-Line player ,. but bowles has said ” no help is coming “.. so we’re stuck withe the FA’s and rookies signed and drafted by one guy -Licht

  8. Dave in Winter Park, Fla Says:

See folks, Here’s the bottom line. Bruce Arians knew for a fact that the 2022 Buccaneers would become Old and Slow, a total team collapse. That’s the reason Ole Bucco Bruce “Retired” and moved up to the front office. Bruce didn’t want this joke of a team on his record. Now in 2023, Bucco Bruce can go sign with a new NFL team that’s have a “Young Franchise QB” like the Arizona Cardinals or the Cleveland Browns for example. In short Bruce Arians got out while the going’s good. I knew for a fact that Toilet Bowles was a real work with the JETS as Head Coach, but remember, Arians would have never allowed Toilet Bowles to became the Head Coach of the YUCKS if the YUCKS were any good. 9. LONG JOHN Says:

Bowls is trying to be too cute on defense just line up and BUST some @ss!!!!

  10. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

It’s insane to me that in 3 years in the NFL NOBODY has taught Devin White how to tackle, nor held him to any consequences for his crappy play.

  11. Nicky666 Says:

Everybody on defense needs to watch that video on repeat

  12. sasquatch Says:

Trade Devin White before we have to pay him more than he’s worth.

  13. Brad Says:

Devin White has been terrible. All bark no bite. He galks too much for someone who is always in the middle of a huge play the wrong way. Going to wind up as a horrible contract once they pay him.

  14. adam from ny Says:

i watched that video on repeat numerous times and by golly they must not give a fugg…

they used to be like a freakin’ wall against the run…

i really hope they can pull it together and this was just a long speed bump of 5 games…

because these players and coaches won us a superbowl and you don’t want to see them go out like this…

bowles and lefty won us a superbowl – hopefully they can pull things together because these guys all are part of a championship here, and you can never take away or replace that glory…

i will say a prayer on thursday afternoon for the whole gang…top to bottom

  15. sasquatch Says:

Prayers aren’t saving anybody. Leftwich is lost without BA. He’s toast.

  16. D Says:

Devin White probably still thinks he is the best LB in the league as he always has. He’s got fast wheels and a big mouth, that’s about it. Watch him go free agent diving when his contracts up because the Bucs aren’t going to offer him what he thinks he deserves, and nor should they.

  17. steele Says:

Out of position, confused, sloppy, sloppy tackling. These problems are not new to the Bucs defense under Bowles. Increasingly last season (the very things that helped lose vs. the Rams), and especially bad this season. Same guys—veterans—not disciplined, not improved, far short of their hyped reputations. Add to this horrific run defense, no pass rush. It doesn’t matter that the defense is better than the offense right now. Both below average.

Todd Bowles. All of it. Not a great HC and not that great a coordinator. Why hasn’t he gotten this defense to shape up? Even with major losses like Suh and JPP, missing Logan Ryan, this D should still not be this sub par.

  18. Tiny Dungy Says:

But BA is still employed by the team.

So can’t he help Lefty or does Brady’s new role for BA prohibit BA from helping out with the offense. Tom Moore?, Clyde Christianson? Let one of those guys call plays if Brady’s new role for BA prevents him from interfering with the offense.

Though you would think as bad as it’s gotten that any help would be welcome.

Also let’s see more of Ko Kieft. He is a beast.

  19. LeftwichgottagoAndBowles too Says:

TB Bucs 3 doesn’t know how to do anything but beat a dead horse. Find something new to say or quit talking. Brady hasnt been his best. He’s the least of their problems. And they have many. Find a new groove bub… ya basic

  20. August 1976 Buc Says:

Baldy is showing us how undisciplined this Buc defense has become.

That is a direct reflection of the coaching and lack of leadership on the defense.
To hear Baldy disgusted tells you just how bad this is to see a veteran defense play.
What would you say to Bowles if you are Glazer bro?
It is not good behind the walls at 1 Buc dungeon right now.

Well a full blown dumpster fire has begun.
Somebody get some water to put it out.

At least the Bucs got a Lombardi trophy out of Bradys time as a Buc.
Some teams still do not have 1, and the Bucs have 2.

    GO BUCS!!!!

  21. Davenport Says:

Coaching. I was a High School HC for 27 years and this looks worse than bad high school defense. If you’re watching tape on this team, the run fits, overruns, position discipline is enough to make you laugh.

Not saying the defense is terrible but its prone to self-inflicted wounds. It is screaming “i dont care what coach says, this is the way I am going to play it”

If, as a coach, you can’t inspire a little bit of genuine fear in your team, they will ignore you. Players are like dogs, if you show them who’s boss, they will gladly follow.and not break discipline.

Its obvious that Bowles isn’t the boss.

  22. Panhandle Buc Says:

Man I hope they see this video! Shameful and it starts and ends with coaching!

  23. Defense Rules Says:

That was an awesome breakdown by Baldy. And sorry Joe, but he’s spot on; film doesn’t lie. That was an extremely undisciplined defense that put that performance on tape.

I kept seeing certain numbers show up time & time again. McCollum (#27) and Delaney (#30) clearly had no idea what they were doing out there. JTS (#9) needs to go back to the drawing board & relearn DE/OLB responsibilities. Vea (#50) was double-teamed in just about every play … and didn’t win any. Shameful day at work.

  24. Cobraboy Says:

I said weeks ago the wheels were coming off.

And warned if this team lays an egg against the Kitties, the Buc chassis would be on the ground, wheel-less.

    And here we are.

The Boo Birds will be out in massive numbers Thursday night as the Crows pick apart what’s left of the Bucs auto salvage.

I will watch because that’s what I always do, but my expectations are Scviano/Radio Morris low. Maybe even lower.

    So sad. So disappointing.

Heartless, headless and leaderless is no way to win in the NFL.

I blame BA for giving us these incompetent morons.

  25. Hodad Says:

Co DC’s, and Bowles calls the defense on Sundays. That’s a complete cluster f#ck. Pick a DC, and let him do his job. This set up isn’t working. White is a bust where he was picked. He should be benched for those missed assignments, as should Goedeke for his. Darden should be benched for his puss returns. No one pays the price with their jobs for failure. That’s a big part of the problem. Some heads need to roll.

  26. BucsFanSince76 Says:

The Bucs Defense of Sapp , Rice , Brooks , Barber , and Lynch would say after a poor performance by the offense with minimal scoring– ” As a defense we should have scored some points or held them to less points , we have to be accountable for not playing our best also”. That is what a truly GREAT DEFENSE says after a loss. What a pleasure it was to watch that D for so many years , if you are not old enough to remember watching those games , do go back and look at the highlight videos of the above mentioned players.

  27. HC Grover Says:

Confused where to line up…I have noticed on most plays the offense seems confused where to set up too. Pretty ragged formations.

  28. HC Grover Says:

Look at Plan 9 here. Pathetic.

  29. BlindManSee Says:

I will continue to watch the games. To save myself pain I think I will root for the other team.

  30. Alanbucsfan Says:

No Gronk, no Jensen, no Marpet, no Cappa, no R Jones, no Suh, no JPP, no Whitehead, no Arians- their replacements aren’t cutting it…

  31. Eckwood Says:

And Ya thought I was Nuts when I suggested several times to get rid of D White , I believe he truly is the cancer of this team . When your biggest mouths and supposed talents are undisciplined in every aspect of their game it bleeds through the whole team ……. No Accountability for his terrible play and never has been !!! NEVER !!! He won’t be in the NFL in 3 or four years !! He is not good at all !!!

  32. Bucobill99 Says:

Bad uninspired team right now but i believe

  33. Leopold Stotch Says:

    Sheesh 😬😬😬

  34. Pewter Power Says:

Devin white is out of position more often than not because he is trying to make splash plays instead of just doing his job

  35. Bucsfanman Says:

Sorry but, if the OFFENSE is producing, most of this is just window dressing and minor.
Should we be concerned about the defense, absolutely. Lets be fair though. It’s the offense that is costing this team games. It’s COMPLEMENTARY football. Points and possessions on offense effect the defense.
For example, if we score a TD on that first drive, Carolina is chasing. If the offense moves the ball and puts up points, Carolina has to match it. Most likely they don’t run as much.

All that said, Devin White needs to get control and stop over-pursuing and missing tackles. 2nd, this DL needs to get stout and soon.

    “Paging Akiem Hicks”

  36. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

D White is quickly becoming the next Kwon and that is not a good thing to be

  37. PSL Bob Says:

It’s sad to listen to, but Baldinger is absolutely right. The Bucs defense, particularly against the run used to be great. Now they suck. Same defensive play caller they had before. The only difference is Suh and JPP are missing. I know they’re unemployed but you have to come to one of two conclusions. Either the replacements for Suh and JPP aren’t getting it done or Bowles has completely gone off the tracks with his coaching and alignments. I don’t have the answer.

  38. Ken Says:

Hes making some super good points…..
Carolina is a team who has given up, backup running backs, 3rd string QB, and they pretty much did whatever they wanted on offense all day.

  39. Craig Says:

How many times will the D-line keep fighting when they funnel an RB into the arms of White and he whiffs?

On top of that he gets the sideline interviews where no one asks why he can’t tackle.

  40. JimmyfromNY Says:

Tbucs- Don’t worry you guys will get Blaine Gabbert or Kyle Trask next year which will lead you in the top 10 draft status for the next 25 years. Brady will go to San Francisco or Miami and make it to a Super Bowl. You guys don’t deserve them you never have. Winning a Super Bowl with you guys is just icing on the cake for his legacy he should’ve left last year and never came back. Anyone blaming him for this year don’t know anything about football. Leads the NFC and yardage , leads nfl in fewest interceptions while tops in the league in tight window throws and turnover worthy play, Funny that a guy leads the league in yardage and still has the fewest turnover where the plays in tight window throws is washed? Good observation!! Throwing to the biggest choke artist of all time Mike Evans overrated Chris Godwin the worst of line in football and potentially the worst running game of all time. Oh and let’s not forget the office of coordinator who couldnt run a d3 HS team in Montana !!

  41. Jerseybuc Says:

Spot on by Baldy! Glad to hear this because while I don’t have his obvious knowledge of the game it is almost verbatim
Of what I have been saying each week as I yell at
My TV. Devin White is to me at the heart of this. Ridiculously out of position and seems more interested in making a spectacular play than a tackle. The D backs look like a damn fire drill is happening half the time. I was lucky enough to be at one Buc years ago after a particularly bad loss and Raheem was a new coach that Monday. He went off so loudly on the D I could Hear
It in the hallways. Somehow I don’t think this is happening with this coaching staff. D day is Thursday. We go one way or the other. I think this is a tipping point for the season.

  42. Mlittman@mail.com Says:

Bowles is a coordinator not a head coach. He has no bravado, no leadership skills, no accountability. Way too laid back.

  43. SlyPirate Says:

    JOE JOE JOE – REQUEST

Ask Bowles if he’s seen the clip and what his thoughts are on the analysis. I’d love to hear his response.

Baldinger is right. That defense design is garbage.

Licht is a former OL, DT, and LB. I’d love to hear his thoughts, too?

  44. Destinjohnny Says:

    Bad drafting
    Older players
    Bad coaching
To many free agents due to bad drafting
