Steelers Secondary Decimated By Injuries

October 14th, 2022

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin.

If you think the Bucs are dealing with injuries in the secondary, get a load of the Steelers.

Per Brooke Pryor of BSPN, the Steelers will be without the services of corners Cam Sutton,
Ahkello Witherspoon and Levi Wallace. That’s Pittsburgh’s top three corners.

The icing on the cake? The Steelers will also be without one of the best safeties in the game,
Minkah Fitzpatrick.

All four were declared out today by Pittsburgh.

And Tom Brady is just starting to warm up.

With the Bucs dinged up in the secondary, and all these injuries to Pittsburgh’s secondary, should Joe bet the over?

Let me guess…..Byron will set the game plan for running the ball all game……pound that rock….

Byron “What we want to do is to put players in a position to win the football game.”

  2. CrackWise Says:

I would bet the over if it were not rigged.

I still enjoy football about as much as the average WWF fan!

    Go Bucs

  3. Defense Rules Says:

Steelers Secondary decimated by injuries? So is ours (Ryan & SMB out; Edwards iffy for Sunday; Davis limited).

  4. Goatfarmer Says:

Give the keys to the offense to Tom. Please. And put Leftwurst up in a skybox so we don’t have to look at him.

  5. Rod Munch Says:

Fun fact: Brady is on pace to throw for 4800 yards… and 3 INTs. That would be a career low for 16+ games if that happens.

But he’s also on pace for just 24 TDs, so he needs to pick up the pace there, dramatically. 24 TDs is what he threw his last year in NE as well.

  6. Rod Munch Says:

Tampabaybucfan – I’m normally 100% with you and I take a lot of joy in bashing Leftwich, but last week vs the Falcons, Brady was throwing bunch of balls into the ground and was bailing on plays early – he certainly looked injured to me. If they did come out running a ton, and Brady is just throwing quick stuff underneath and appears to be bailing on plays again, and what he is throwing is mostly ugly, wobbly balls, then it’s pretty clear he’s not anywhere near 100%.

Now, with that said, I didn’t hear anything all week about Brady not practicing or being limited, so maybe he just had a bad 2nd half (outside of the final drive) and all is well. I certainly hope that is the case.

Just something to look for, how Brady reacts after throwing the ball, are the balls themselves nice clean Brady balls, or wobbly ducks.

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Yes….we are a bit dinged up….but they have 3 starting corners & a S….out…..and we have good depth in the secondary…..our advantage…..

And, they have to go against Brady….we, the rookie.

    BURNS!

  9. sasquatch Says:

If Byron goes run heavy with that situation in front of him, he should be fired. This should be a big day for Brady and Evans, hopefully Godwin. Chuck the damn ball. If this team is going anywhere, this is the week we should start seeing some signs, hopefully a blowout.

@Rod. Lenny said the plan was to throw underneath based on film study of the Falcons. They play pretty soft coverage underneath. It’s called taking what the defense gives you, and Brady has made a living out of it. Leftwich also said that was the plan was taking the short stuff. If teams are playing a two high cover shell, no point in forcing it. Our offensive game plan should be based on the defense we’re facing. As you see across the league, a lot of teams are going with the quick game because defenses are taking away the deep stuff. When we did have a chance with one one one deep shot, you’re right Brady missed Miller. Rodgers has also missed on deep passes over 20 yards. Brady is current ranked third by PFF in 20+ passes.

I can’t stand when fans complain about the method in which we move the ball downfield. If we have to dink and dunk our way downfield, so be it. Mahomes had a field day with the short passes against us, and no one complains . Rodgers averaged 3 air yards against us and moved the ball with a ease, but when Tom does it, it’s a problem? Mahomes has also been stat padding in the red zone with shovel passes and quick throws to Kelce.

    I LIKE. VERY NICE.

Even with there secondary decimated they still can rush the passer. Even without T.J. Watt they have a good front seven. So, we still at least have to threaten the run and not get pass happy because we see a bunch of children in the secondary. Our offense still should roll with all those injuries if Evans and Godwin can play a full game.

  13. Rick Says:

this is a slump buster kind of week

  14. Jp09 Says:

Let it f’ng rip. It’s what we’re built to do, it’s the only time the offense moves. Muddle huddle, no huddle, up tempo, let Brady dictate the pace of the game. Albeit preseason, look at the one drive the first team Offense was out there and look at the successful drives during the season, it’s all on tape. This offense is meant to go

  15. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Rod,

From the looks of things, Brady was in better shape throwing than Lenny running…..
I’s going to hard to keep Brady from ripping up their second string secondary….

  16. Bob in valrico Says:

Mike Evans has 17 out of 20 receptions for first downs . Godwin has eight .If we aren’t going ‘ risk it, no biscuit ” at times in the game we made a huge mistake in our gameplan.

  17. Goatfarmer Says:

Our challenge will continue to be

    Bowelswich.

  18. Mike Johnson Says:

Man, 4-2 has a nice ring to it. Just win.

  19. Bucsfan13 Says:

I love Mike, but Godwin is the best skill player on this team. He can do so much more than Mike. He does the dirty stuff and he’s very adept at reading coverages. That’s why he and Brady are always on the same page. He’s also the YAC king. It’s no surprise that the offense stalled when Bowles inexplicably benched him for most of the second half.

  20. Goatfarmer Says:

Sasquatch – not a good idea to fire Bymron. Instead, promote him to Vice President of Offensive Play Calling Development.

  21. Goatfarmer Says:

    Mike Johnson – right on!

  22. D Says:

All of these injuries and Joe still predicted the Bucs to only win by 3 on Ira’s podcast. Smh. No confidence.

All of these injuries and Joe still predicted the Bucs to only win by 3 on Ira’s podcast. Smh. No confidence.

Joe wasn’t aware of all the injuries when the pod was recorded. Joe was partly estimating the score, in part, based on feedback he got from Bucs defenders. They were quick to point out to Joe that the Steelers have some players and were in the playoffs last year.

If it makes you feel better once Joe learned of the injuries, Joe put cash on the over-46. 🙂

  24. Goatfarmer Says:

I’ll be happy to win by 0.1 points. I can’t see the pillows being able to match Pittsburgh’s physicality. It’s all they have so you can bet they’ll be snarling wolves out of the gate, both trenches. They will be looking like a 1975 Steelers copy.

    Poor Tom.

  25. DoooshLaRue Says:

Hey Joe………. it’s never too early to start writing that premature victory thread for Sunday…..
