“Mentally, We’re Fine”

October 24th, 2022

On a day when many Bucs fans have lost their minds and formally are burying the corpse of the greatest run in team history, the head coach let everyone know the team’s collective head is good.

“Mentally, we’re fine,” Todd Bowles said this morning at One Buc Palace, noting the Bucs can’t wait to get back on the field and get the taste of a Carolina crap sandwich out of their mouths.

That answer really twisted Joe up.

On one hand it’s great that Bowles thinks the team’s mindset is fine. But on the other hand, perhaps Bowles has lost touch with what a good mentality looks like? After all, the Bucs have looked soft the past two weeks against weak teams. (The Steelers scored 10 points yesterday.)

Joe would have preferred to hear a little fire from Bowles saying how the team is angry, ornery and downright embarrassed and they might need the full 24 hours to get over Sunday’s debacle.

Regardless, Joe will take Bowles at his word. The Bucs are in fine shape mentally less than 24 hours after a historic upset, and after Mike Evans “seen the light go out of us.”

Bowles is a joke. His lack of emotion is a huge part of the problem. An Arians dog cussing right now would go a long way. Yes…that corpse is dead and buried. Sad.

  2. BucsFanSince76 Says:

what Bowles is trying to say is Jason Licht go get me some horses for my Dline and Oline , because we cannot get it done with who we have, but mentally we are Ok.

  3. TOM EDRINGTON Says:

BULL-SPIT !!!!! (in honor of the late Steve Duemig)

  4. Just Leave Trask Alone Says:

Mentally we’re fine but we just got our asses kicked by the worst team in football.

Well they were the worst team in football. Now that distinction belongs to the Bucs.

We need to start talking about whether Tampa can bring in Sean Payton in 2023

  5. SufferingSince76 Says:

If they are mentally fine, then what’s the excuse for the lousy play and play calling? Like you alluded to, Mike Evans’ statement, as ludicrous as it was, says otherwise. All is well, all is well.

  6. tampabuscsbro Says:

So how is this going to look when we are being shut out through 2 quarters at home against anybody. At the same time Bruce Arians is put into the ring of honor in the middle of that game.

What will the reaction in the stands look like?

  7. BigPoppaBuc Says:

Man … Yesterday was a gut punch and now we’ve gotten turn around and play the ravens in three days. This our season right here imo. Thursday is a must win for this team. If they take a third L in less than 20 days there’s no way they’re mentally ok.

  8. SB~LV Says:

    Go away!!!
    Stop posting his picture Joes!

  9. Ultra ClodHopper Says:

I appreciate him trying but he’s full of it.

  10. Nicholas Carlson Says:

What does a 29-45 coach know about a good team’s mentality?

  11. Jmarkbuc Says:

If they’re fine after another shatting of the bed, that’s disturbing.

Almost as disturbing as a the team losing its heart after1 drop in the first drive…

  12. Mike Johnson Says:

brady is worried about all them millions he’s about to lose to his wife. And the fact that she is probably gonna have a younger man under her arms spending his money. Hell, my play would be off too.

  13. Ultra ClodHopper Says:

Mentally, this team does not look much different than any team during the lost decade.

  14. Redeemer Says:

His comments are a perfect example of the disconnect. They’re playing incredibly undisciplined on defense, and can’t score on offense, but they’re fine mentally? The only thing left is to start calling out players. Ole BA wouldn’t be afraid to do it. This is a broken team.

  15. ClwJB Says:

Logic says the Ravens run for 350+ and Score 30+ While we go 3/13 on third downs and score 6 pts

The OC will state emphatically post game that production doubled over the prior week

The HC will smirk meekly and start talking about how they are working on getting it turned around – all the while knowing he has ZERO idea what to do

We are very familiar with spotting the fakes, we have had way more of them than quality coaches for so many decades

    It’s a Bucs life, again

  16. steele Says:

“Mentally fine” goes with “we good” on everything, no matter how bad or disturbing things gets.

Mike Evans declaring “we saw the life go out of us” after an early dropped pass, clutching about, it unable to function is not “mentally fine”. The attitude of the team across the board, with the coaches at the top, is unacceptable, a far cry from a competitive team.

I will say again: Tom Brady said last season that “we have fighters”. Not anymore.

  17. Anonymous Says:

He is in a sinking ship and doesnt even realize it. Bowles is lovie like. Hey at least the texans score points

  18. SB~LV Says:

The only way that Bowles is not packing boxes is the short week.
Lose , they will, and he’ll be gone!

  19. Roc Says:

    WHAT????

No Way Bowles even knows football if he thinks the Bucs are fine mentally

Please Fire this So Called Coach

After yesterday No Way you can say this team is mentally ok
    GOAT
    EVANS
    GODWIN
    FOURNETTE

AND CANT SCORE ONE TD ON THE PANTHERS

    MENTALLY SOFT YES

  20. #99 Says:

Funny thing is he didn’t learn a thing from being fired in New York!

  21. Aceofaerospace Says:

His words don’t mean too much to me right now.

  22. Ash Says:

Mentally fine? They failed to score a single touchdown against a team in a fire sale with an interm head coach. Mike Evans said the life went out of the entire team on one dropped pass and the team is mentally fine? Words must mean different things to Todd wow just wow.

  23. BucBallin Says:

The Team has been taken over by a loser with the intellect of a shoe. We is be just fines.

  24. firethecannons Says:

players are not responding to Bowles sarcastic discipline approach Arians had a better handle on this obviously if Brady wants to stay on this team he needs to give up the wedsnday off

  25. BuckyDent Says:

Bring back BRUCE! The real GOAT

  26. adam from ny Says:

well if coach says everything is fine…

    then heck, everything is fine…

is everything dandy too coach?…is it all fuggin” dandelions

  27. jkholdingfirm Says:

HC & OC ….. Supposed to be geniuses in their respective roles…. Unreal

  28. Gofortheface30 Says:

That players only meeting sure worked out well!! Werent they supposed to be fired up and pissed off, wanting to get that Pittsburgh taste out of their mouth? It’s one thing to be bad with no talent, it’s an order of magnitude worse to have these pro bowlers, leaders and Super Bowl winners basically mailing it in. The culture here was supposed to be changed. I thought we were really building in to an organization that most other teams were going to look up to, and a winning culture of accountability blah blah. This is extremely disappointing. Still half the season to be played but if Tampa finishes like 5-12 then people will look at the 2020 team and this run in general in a different way. This could be a huge stain/black eye for a lot of people

  29. adam from ny Says:

this team coming in on thursday night is a hard nosed football team…

    tough af…

    i hope coach understands this…

and jpp alone, is quiet storming his way into tampa to rip this team a new azzhole in front of all the fans at ray jay on national tv…

this is jpp’s superbowl right here…

    beware

  30. BuckyDent Says:

ROC – I hear ya but with such a weak division , as long as we sit in 1st I just dont see the firings happening

  31. Gofortheface30 Says:

Additionally, here’s the cold hard truth: ya we kicked the chiefs ass in the Super Bowl but they’re still relevant. They’re still great. They could be going back to the Super Bowl again and again and again. They and their fans have the last laugh. Do our players really want to be just a blip on the radar? This needs to bother the players more, or I wish it would. Their coach, their gm and the culture of sustained succes is showing us how it’s done

  32. Yucs2Bucs Says:

This is a joke and just will continue to get worse

  33. theghost Says:

Bowels is not a leader of men

  34. Phx Bucs Fan Says:

I think any answer other than “we’re fine” would have been better. How about pissed? Embarrassed? Angry? Can’t he throw a cup of coffee or kick a trash can?

I’m assuming he has a guaranteed contract?

  35. Tony1775 Says:

Todd Bowles is low energy. Team is soft and has no marbles.

  36. captivajim Says:

If he really believes that — we are in for a pounding thurs nite .. So , overnite the team went from mentally soft to mentally fine–bowles guy is a loser. He can’t motivate his own defense -never mind the entire team ……

  37. Goatfarmer Says:

    Bwaaaahaaaaaahahahaaaahahahanaaaaabahahahaaaaa.

    Riiiiight, Toad.

You and Moronby need to be applying for jobs outside of football now. There’s a reason why no one else hired you. BA gifted you the job. Mistake, BA.

Even Brady has been affected by the mentally weak Bowelswich.

Too bad Tom ends his career 3-14.

  38. Craig Says:

For brain dead zombies, they are mentally fine

  39. Pelsbuc61 Says:

Colossal mistake to follow the BA succession plan. Bowles has no business being a HC and Leftwich should be history after Thursday night. BA is not coming back. The real question is do the Glazers have the stones to clean house after this year including the GM? Just like old times . Bucs fans plan for next year before the end of October. They can at least be sellers before the trade deadline.

  40. SB~LV Says:

    FAILURE

  41. LakelandSteve Says:

Jesus, Bowles sounds like every other losing coach we have had here. I thought that maybe this franchise could turn the corner and put a winner out there year after year. Wrong on that one. Oh no we suck again.

  42. Marc Coppola Says:

    …except for the coaches.

  43. Panhandle Buc Says:

This further proves that he is out of touch and the team is a joke! They should be pissed and EMBARASSED, because we are and we don’t lace up! Sucks to suck at your job…

  44. PSL Bob Says:

Thank God we won a Super Bowl when we did. If Bowles thinks this team’s mindset is fine, he’s delusional.

  45. RobSinger Says:

Bowles has been a losing proposition from the get-go. Why would ANYONE think a loser who coached the NEW YORK JETS! could handle this team? He’s the poster boy for what happens when the league “forces” teams to hire unqualified black coaches.

  46. macajubav Says:

Todd said he likes to use sarcasm to adjust players who are not playing well. What a terrible answer ! Sarcasm is a weak man’s tool ! Yes being direct is the way a healthy adult in any business adresses someone who is underperforming. Sarcasm is weak mentally and this dude is so unaware that he revealed that about himself in an interview !

  47. Tye Says:

Teams are a reflection of their coaches…

Depending on which decade you relate too:

This team has NO gumption; NO Spirit; NO guts or glory; NO heart; NO GRIT!

About as soft as they come, just like Bowles!

  48. Buczilla Says:

We’ll see how fine they are when there’s less than 40k in the stadium by the end of the year if this nonesense keeps up. Losing to a good team like kc is one thing, but losing to a putrid team like the panthers and looking like half the team doesn’t give a flying f while doing it is another. Blow it up!

  49. AbucAway Says:

He’s crapping sunshine. There isn’t a ‘fine mentality’ in any Buc or fan.

Everything is fine… Nothing to see here… move along

  50. Whoolio? Says:

Bowles has no idea how his team feels. I think he speaks for himself and no one else everytime he’s asked a question. We know you’re mentally fine Bowles. You’ve proven this season doesn’t matter to you and you’re OK with running a team into the ground. You would likely say this is your biggest accomplishment! Can’t wait to see you fired and have a young fresh coach brought in that has ideas on how to fire up his team and have some creative ideas on offense.

  51. Lg55 Says:

Receivers can’t create space, running backs don’t have that elusive speed, offensive line can’t man up and push open a hole, our defense can’t stop a hole from being opened up, Brady is off on some throws, our return game is only good for 5 yds. Looks like we’re going in slow motion compared to other teams. Forfeit Thursday night game so that will give us more time to heal for the last game of season. Maybe we could learn a few more plays by then.

  52. Goatfarmer Says:

No one is going to change the staff. Unless the Glazertards do it. They won’t. So we are stuck with the train wreck that will be paying the devil for Brady, just like we paid the devil for Gruden.

The Bucs — winners of two Super Bowls and owners of the most pathetic W/L record of any team in any sport.

    Great distinction.

  53. DungyDance Says:

If the team is mentally fine right now, then that in itself is a problem. Fine?? Really, with everything that has happened over the past few weeks? So what does someone say when they catch their spouse in bed with someone else. “Eh. I think I’m mentally fine.” What a joke.

  54. Defense Rules Says:

Why would anyone even ask a head coach about his team’s mental state? What exactly would you expect him to say? ‘Oh ya, my guys have their heads up their arse.’ Or ‘They were all so upset they peed the bed last night’.

Virtually all of our coaches, and quite a few of our starters, maybe even the majority, have not only coached or played in a Super Bowl but they’ve won a Super Bowl. They know what a winning TEAM looks like. They also now know what a losing team looks like.

WC Fields, when asked about his attitude towards money, responded … ‘I’ve been rich, and I’ve been poor. I’d rather be rich’.

And so would these players and these coaches. They want to win, that’s why they’re here. Nothing’s working right now, not even for The GOAT. HOPEFULLY they’ll get it figured out before the season goes down the tubes. MAYBE they won’t. MAYBE the coaching really isn’t ‘good enough’ to right the ship. MAYBE (and this is more likely IMO) this team has too many weaknesses in key position groups to win much of anything. But then again, MAYBE they’ll win enough to win the NFC South & get it together by the playoffs. None of us know right now.

  55. Cobraboy Says:

I’d much prefer a profanity-laced temper tantrum, than passive, clueless, nonsense.

  56. Cobraboy Says:

@DR: yes, I would expect the HC to say “We have our collective heads up our arse” if their collective heads are up their collective arses.

Denying the obvious is not a good look for a noob HC with dubious past HC success.

  57. JimmyfromNY Says:

What an absolutely embarrassing press conference and the lack of urgency in that human statue was par for the course . This team is on the SS Titanic and Todd Bowles is the glacier. If the Glaziers had any balls they would ask for Legywichs head at a minimum right now. You have the greatest football player of all time still throwing the ball into tight windows down the field. Surround him with competent people. Mike Evans comment after yesterday‘s drop is even worse. Give me a break Hall of Fame receiver he choked and packet it in the rest of the game

  58. HC Grover Says:

Cheap tix soon on gameday outside the empty stadium? 3rd qtr BBQ in the parking lot. Creative paper head bags. I remember that. If someone does not turn this pirate ship around it will be back.

  59. Arn platz Says:

Last year in two games against the panthers the Bucs scored a total of 73 points and only allowed 23. A year later they only score three and allow 21.
Yes we have loss a lot of quality starters through injury, retirement and free agency. The replacements for those starters were either not properly scouted, evaluated or not being properly coached. I blame Licht And the coaching staff.

  60. Cchead Says:

Kick in the Bowles is mentally soft. F this guy.

  61. Goatfarmer Says:

Here’s the truth — most of these players won a Super Bowl, went 13-4 last year, and watched Todd Bowels single-handedly blow their chance at a comeback against the Rams and a SB repeat, with a shockingly bad call combined with his squad being totally unprepared about what to do on the call. So it’s a great idea to give that guy the HC spot? He lost the confidence of his whole team in that one segment and now he is the lead dog, who takes a day off himself because, well, it was personal?

What an insult to the players, the fans and the league. Never has a team more underperformed than what this batch of softies is showing.

Welcome back, 2011. It looks like that.

Players don’t know what they are doing. Why? Because coaches don’t hold them accountable to know. Why? Because Genius Todd’s Bowel thinks he’s such a great teacher with great schemes that the players will know by osmosis. Or something. No defense busts more, Did anyone see the Steelers bust? The Panthers?

Some of that of course is due to Byemoron and his short bus offense.

    Whatever.

    Puking on myself. Right. Now.

  62. BucBeliever Says:

I say trade the GOAT to Miami that is where he lives. Maybe they can get a 3rd pic and assume his salary. That would make the Glazers some money. Fire the coaches. Get a top draft pick for a losing season and draft or trade for a quarterback.

  63. Rod Munch Says:

Evans is a very emo guy, he was mad at himself for f—ing up. I watched him after that play, he wasn’t quitting. I believe he caught everything after that, even when he was getting lit up. He knows he screwed up, he’s angry at himself as he feels like he cost the team, but any idea he gave up or didn’t play hard, is nonsense.

  64. Davenport Says:

Todd — just stop talking. The more you speak, the more you show people that you do not have what it takes to be a HC. Dude, you can’t read the room… your team has mentally checked out on you!

  65. Goatfarmer Says:

Any coach that would say that after losing to a terrible Packers team, a horrible Steelers team, and a grotesque Panthers team, is begging to be fired.

If it’s not mental weakness, then you are physically weak. Players in the NFL aren’t typically weaklings.

Todd – do you play golf? Cornhole? Probably you find Cornhole enjoyable. Some do, it’s even on ESPN.

  66. DungyDance Says:

Agree Rod. More guys need to feel the same way as Evans. Have some pride and personal standards, and feel like sh** when you f up bad. I respect Evans for his reaction.

  67. Bosch Says:

Raheem Morris all over again. Just doesn’t have what it takes to be a HC. Not even close.

  68. Biff Barker Says:

I managed a large and diverse group of professionals for Fortune 50 company.

The best policy is to stick with the truth when possible. Even people outside of your fan club recognize bull spit and appreciate

  69. Bosch Says:

Time for the confidence poll, Joe.

  70. Biff Barker Says:

So, Todd is full of bull spit. The players see right thru this.

Todd, we suck because you suck. Take BL on you way out.

  71. SlyPirate Says:

    WAIT WHAT???

What happened to, “We’re in a dark place.”

Now everyone is fine with losing?

  72. BucFanforLife Says:

Okay fine. I can confess I’m worried now about our season. So much for optimism at this point. “At least we’re still first in our division?”. Who am I kidding. We’re a easy beat right now unless we get better game plans put together. We can’t win by showing up, Bucs.

  73. Cchead Says:

Google Todd Bowles press conference Jets and listen to the same bs as he is spewing now. This guy has learned nothing. 11/19 he was asked about not being able to score in the first quarter and not being able to score in the red zone. It’s exactly the freaking same answers to the same problems. This guy is a loser. Period.

  74. ClwJB Says:

The players only meeting ended with a consensus that the coaching staff without their Daddy is a bunch of baboons

Brady plays scared in the pocket now for sure – he is one crunching hit from retirement and everyone knows it – his interior line is a joke and we are rotating

    It’s just embarrassing

The Ravens are licking their chops to feast and get a long weekend to boot

We, on the other hand will be looking up
Draft boards for OL in 23

  75. Cobraboy Says:

@ClwJB: the way this team is playing, the Bucs may have their pick of any top OL they want.

I gave them a little slack to get things together from early on.

But the wheels have fallen off.

    No. More. Slack.

  76. Biff Barker Says:

SlyPirate, losing is one think if your team shows up and loses to a tough team

Losing is another thing when you play as poorly as we did. That was bad.

BTW, FBA. You told everybody both guys should be be head coaches. The world knows now. Huge difference between mistakes and malaise.

  77. T REX Says:

    What a waste of a Brady season…

Jason Licht should be the 1st one to go.

    He is NOTHING without Brady…nothing.

Suh, Gronk AB only came because of Brady not Licht.

    He is total garbage

  78. Hodad Says:

Glad they’re mentally fine. I on the other hand am a basket case watching this team.

  79. Anonymous Says:

    Ohhhhh. Okkkkaayyy

  80. EEK Says:

When P Manning came back against Chucky’s defending SB champs on MNF in 2003, the life went out of that team too

The Brady run was amazing and a source of so much Bucs joy

  81. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

    I am with you @Goatfarmer.
Bowles stupid play call against the Rams cost us a trip to the Super Bowl, then we reward him by making him Head Coach ?
Our Team is not playing well for him, that is for sure!
What I want to know is Did Brady force Arians to retire, as a condition for him coming back ?
If so, then he did this to our Team.

  82. Bucco Bruce Says:

Wish BA was still the coach. Bowles is a great DC and thats it. He’s too chill and lax of a coach from what I have seen, he has no sense of urgency. Also we can tell BA had some kind of hand in the offense because BL looks lost and so does everyone else. Gage ended up avg at best. We have still no great Wes Welker type that Brady loves and are relegated to constantly hurt low performance wrs and only a rookie TE. They need to make a move, maybe grab that big TE from the Colts. Grab a great yac inside slot wr somewhere, and ffs run the ball a bit more.

  83. Tvan101 Says:

Some guys are great coordinators and terrible head coaches, Bowles is one of those guys. He can not go soon enough, where is the fire, because he has none.

  84. SB Says:

BIGGEST LIE i HAVE HEARD ALL YR!!!
And my son tells some doosies!

  85. Goatfarmer Says:

I’m not watching the mega-carnage the Ravens will inflict on Toad’s Bowels’ softest Yucs since 2011. I’ll be somewhere that doesn’t have a tv set, drinking. Heavily.

  86. Goatfarmer Says:

It might be time to start a serious and committed journey with psilocybin, peyote and cough medicine.

  87. Jerry Says:

That’s the problem, Todd. You think everything’s fine.

This team has no killer instinct. There is no hunger. There is no heart. And there is no sense of urgency. The team looks lethargic and anemic. And you think mentally, they are “fine.”

    That’s the problem right there.

  88. ChiBuc Says:

Why is everyone crying for Arians. He hand picked these coaches. Only a motivated focused Tommy and 2 exceptional free agents, Suh n JPP, made him look so great. Before them, he didn’t do all that much here except lead JW to “record” numbers. Btw, he’s still on the payroll and I ain’t seeing him add any value

    Payton! Payton!

Sh!t, I’d hire Flores interim, at least his teams showed heart. This gutless bunch need a leader, not a has been

  89. Vlad The Impaler Says:

Bowles is a good DC but he does not have the mindset for a HC.
He proved that in NY but Arains didn’t believe it.
Yes, he did a good job as DC for Arains. No he’s not a HC by any stretch.

Bowles must display the skewered bodies of his vanquished foes if wants respect

  90. steele Says:

In addition to being a so-so at best D coordinator (witness playoff loss vs. Rams, which is still painfully relevant and telling), Bowles is not a leader at all. Even saying things like “mentally we good” is just the kind of thing that insidiously breeds a losing attitude and the acceptance of declining standards.

Brady barking at guys doesn’t register, when the locker room is all “we good, I’m good, why you yelling at me? (I can’t wait to hit the showers and go back to playing video games)”

  91. brooks Says:

Why? The #1 pick didn’t help us any in 2015.

  93. MadMax Says:

    Everything is dumpster fire fine….lol.

    I get it now, we’re tanking for Brady’s eventual replacement….all good 🙂

    Bo Nix!

  94. Frank Pillow Says:

Pittsburgh ready. Carolina ready. I mean we’re a bogus roughing the passer penalty from being Atlanta ready too. Lovie would be very, very proud of Todd. This team needs an enema.

  95. T REX Says:

Other than that Mrs Lincoln…how was the play?

  96. Ugotrobbed Says:

What!!? So they weren’t ready to get that Pittsburgh taste out of their mouth against a pathetic Carolina team!! Get me a break!! What a terrible coach/coaches!!

  97. Manny Says:

Im gonna make this short and to the point. Mr bowles is an idiot! He isnt head coaching material. He would make a good little league coach im sure. The nfl only has enough for 32 football genius brains and bowles aint one. I know there are some amazing coaches out there whould would make a very good coach. Lots of young, incredibly smart guys out there like mike mcdaniel who have studied every angle of football possible. Bring some of these guys in and officially hire your new coach. Obviously i would love payton or arians back jf that was on the table. Ok, well that was def not short but owell. I got my point across
